Foraging Effort Of Juvenile Steller Sea Lions Eumetopias Jubatus With Respect To Heterogeneity Of Sea Surface Temperature, Michelle E. Lander, Thomas R. Loughlin, Miles G. Logsdon, Glenn R. Vanblaricom, Brian Fadely

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

Among many other factors, the decline of the western distinct population segment of Steller sea lions Eumetopias jubatus in Alaska (USA) has been attributed to changes in the distribution or abundance of prey due to the cumulative effects of fisheries and large-scale climate change. However, the depletion of localized prey resources due to small-scale environmental variability and perturbations may be impeding recovery, resulting in the need to understand how the environment currently affects this species on smaller spatial and temporal scales. The objective of this study, there-fore, was to assess how Steller sea lions respond to changes in localized environmental …

Dreissena And The Disappearance Of The Spring Phytoplankton Bloom In Lake Michigan, Henry A. Vanderploeg, James R. Liebig, Thomas F. Nalepa, Gary L. Fahnenstiel, Steven A. Pothoven

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

We determined the clearance rates of the profunda morph of the quagga mussel (Dreissena bugensis) using seston and Cryptomonas ozolini, a high-quality algal food, for the temperature range 1–7 °C,which is the full temperature range this morph is likely to experience during isothermal conditions or in the hypolimnion of deep lakes. Experiments at 3 °C with the shallow-water morph of the quagga and the zebra mussel provided very similar results. The clearance rates were combined with dreissenid abundance in 0–30 m, 30–50 m, 50–90 m, and >90m depth zones of the southern basin of Lake Michigan to …

Lake Michigan Lower Food Web: Long-Term Observations And Dreissena Impact, G. Fahnenstiel, T. Nalepa, S. Pothoven, H. Carrick, D. Scavia

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

Lake Michigan has a long history of non-indigenous introductions that have caused significant ecological change. Here we present a summary of eight papers that document recent changes and the current state of the lower food web of southern Lake Michigan after the establishment of large dreissenid populations. Results are based on long-term data sets collected by federal and academic research and monitoring programs that place recent changes into a historic context. Dramatic and significant changes in the lower food web, such as the loss of the spring diatom bloom, large declines in phytoplankton productivity, and a decline of Mysis populations, …

Gender Differences In Risk Behaviors Of Adolescents Enrolled In An Inner City Charter High School, Kimbra Dent

Master of Public Health Program Student Publications

Adolescents engage in health risk behaviors (Grunbaum, 2001). Persons engaging in high‐risk behaviors during adolescence have disproportionally poor health as adults (Grunbaum et al., 2003; Resnick et al., 1997). Adolescents comprise a target group for health promotion and education programs to establish healthy lifestyle choices that transcend into adulthood. The purpose of this descriptive research study was to identify, analyze, and compare the health interests and health risk behaviors between male and female inner city, adolescent, charter high school students. The study served as a needs assessment before a health promotion and education program was implemented into the high school. …

Barriers To Accessing Primary Dental Care For The Uninsured/ Underinsured Population In The City Of Cincinnati, Kiana R. Trabue

Master of Public Health Program Student Publications

Despite federal, state and local efforts to provide access to dental services to vulnerable populations such as the uninsured and underinsured, many people still do not receive adequate dental care. This study seeks to identify barriers to primary dental care in the City of Cincinnati. The Cincinnati Health Department (CHD) operates five safety net health centers which provide dental care for the citizens of the Cincinnati service area. Surveys conducted in these centers found that cost was the main reason individuals do not see the dentist regularly. Even in those with dental insurance cost was a major barrier, although most …

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

Night work and rotating shift work are found to be detrimental to the health of workers. A cross sectional analytical study was conducted among the employees of a public medical centre in Kuala Lumpur. A total of 380 employees participated in the health screening and questionnaire survey. The majority of the respondents were Malays, females, and with mean age of 49 years old. The shift workers persistently had higher but non-significant proportions of being overweight/obesity and unhealthy clinical indicators such as systolic and diastolic blood pressure, fasting blood glucose and lipid profile except waist circumferences and HDL-cholesterol. There were also …

Cloning And Expression Of Toxoplasma Gondii Dense Granular Protein 4 (Gra4) In Pichia Pastoris, Y.L. Lau, M.T. Hasan, G. Thiruvengadam, M.M. Idris, I. Init Jan 2010

Cloning And Expression Of Toxoplasma Gondii Dense Granular Protein 4 (Gra4) In Pichia Pastoris, Y.L. Lau, M.T. Hasan, G. Thiruvengadam, M.M. Idris, I. Init

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

GRA4 of Toxoplasma gondii has been shown to prompt IgG, IgM and IgA responses in previous studies and is thus considered one of the major immunogenic proteins from T. gondii that can be used for both diagnostics purposes and vaccine development. This study seeks to clone and express the GRA4 in Pichia pastoris, which has numerous advantages over other systems for expression of eukaryotic proteins. In order to achieve this, the gene was cloned into the pPICZ alpha A expression vector, which was then incorporated into the P. pastoris genome via insertional integration for expression of the recombinant protein, under …

Genotype-Phenotype Diversity Of Beta-Thalassemia In Malaysia: Treatment Options And Emerging Therapies, G. Elizabeth, T.J.A.M. Ann Jan 2010

Genotype-Phenotype Diversity Of Beta-Thalassemia In Malaysia: Treatment Options And Emerging Therapies, G. Elizabeth, T.J.A.M. Ann

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

The haemoglobinopathies and thalassemias represent the most common inherited monogenic disorders in the world. Beta-thalassaemia major is an ongoing public health problem in Malaysia. Prior to 2004, the country had no national policy for screening and registry for thalassemia. In the absence of a national audit, the true figure of the extent of thalassemia in the Malaysian population was largely presumptive from micro-mapping studies from various research workers in the country. The estimated carrier rate for beta-thalassemia in Malaysia is 3.5-4. There were 4768 transfusion dependent thalassemia major patients as of May 2010 (Data from National Thalassemia Registry).

Mad Subalgebras And Lie Subalgebras Of An Enveloping Algebra, Xin Tang Jan 2010

Mad Subalgebras And Lie Subalgebras Of An Enveloping Algebra, Xin Tang

College of Health, Science, and Technology

Let µ(?(1)) denote the enveloping algebra of the two-dimensional nonabelian Lie algebra ?(1) over a base field K. We study the maximal abelian ad-nilpotent (mad) associative subalgebras and finite-dimensional Lie subalgebras of µ(?(1)). We first prove that the set of noncentral elements of µ(?(1)) admits the Dixmier partition, µ(?(1))?K=? 5i=1 ?i, and establish characterization theorems for elements in ?i, i=1,3,4. Then we determine the elements in ?i, i=1,3, and describe the eigenvalues for the inner derivation ad Bx,x??i, i=3,4. We also derive other useful results for elements in ?i, i=2,3,4,5. As an application, we find all framed mad subalgebras of …

Shifting The Burden: Proving Infringement And Damages In Patent Cases Involving Inconsistent Manufacturing Techniques, Julie E. Zink Jan 2010

Shifting The Burden: Proving Infringement And Damages In Patent Cases Involving Inconsistent Manufacturing Techniques, Julie E. Zink

UC Law Science and Technology Journal

The law is clear that it is the plaintiff-patentee's burden to prove both infringement and damages. It is unclear, however, in cases involving inconsistent manufacturing techniques, what level of evidence is required to meet this burden and when, if at all, such burden should pass to the defendant-infringer to provide rebuttal evidence. One consideration in this analysis is when findings of infringement can extend to the entire product line. Another matter considered in this paper is how the court deals with the confusion of goods and the commingling of records. This Article examines the various patent doctrines that may have …

First Report Of Field Populations Of Two Potential Aphid Pests Of The Bioenergy Crop Miscanthus × Giganteus, Jeffrey Bradshaw, Jarrad R. Prasifka, Kevin L. Steffey, Michael E. Gray Jan 2010

First Report Of Field Populations Of Two Potential Aphid Pests Of The Bioenergy Crop Miscanthus × Giganteus, Jeffrey Bradshaw, Jarrad R. Prasifka, Kevin L. Steffey, Michael E. Gray

Panhandle Research and Extension Center

Sipha flava (Forbes) (yellow sugarcane aphid) and Rhopalosiphum maidis (Fitch) (corn leaf aphid) (Hemiptera: Homoptera: Aphididae) are common aphids occurring throughout North America on many host plants, most of which are grasses (Blackman & Eastop 2006). Both aphids are pests of several important food crops, e.g., Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench (sorghum), Saccharum officinarum L. (sugarcane), Triticum spp. (wheat), and Zea mays L. (corn) (Blackman & Eastop 2000). Additionally, both aphids are vectors of potyviruses and R. maidis is a vector of luteoviruses in these crops. Until now, to our knowledge, no natural infestations of these aphids have been reported on …

Effects Of Maternal Nutrition On Conceptus Growth And Offspring Performance: Implications For Beef Cattle Production, Richard N. Funston, David M. Larson, K. A. Vonnahme Jan 2010

Effects Of Maternal Nutrition On Conceptus Growth And Offspring Performance: Implications For Beef Cattle Production, Richard N. Funston, David M. Larson, K. A. Vonnahme

West Central Research and Extension Center, North Platte

Developmental programming is the concept that a maternal stimulus or insult at a critical period in fetal development has long-term effects on the offspring. Historically, considerable effort has been made to understand how nutrition influences health and productivity during the postnatal period. Whereas maternal nutrition during pregnancy plays an essential role in proper fetal and placental development, less is known about how maternal nutrition affects the health and productivity of the offspring. Conceptus growth is sensitive to direct and indirect effects of maternal dietary intake. Even from the earliest stages of embryonic life, when nutrient requirements for conceptus growth are …
