Corn Stalk Penetration Resistance As A Predictor Of Southwestern Corn Borer (Lepidoptera: Crambidae) Survival, B. K. Gibson, C. D. Parker, F. R. Musser

Midsouth Entomologist

Studies were conducted to determine if corn stalk strength had an effect on southwestern corn borer (Diatraea grandiosella Dyar) survival during different growth stages. In 2006 southwestern corn borer larvae were placed on corn plants during dough stage near the ear and base of the plant. Penetration resistance was lower and borer survival was higher near the ear than near the base of the plant. In 2007, five corn hybrids were planted at three locations in Mississippi. Plants were infested with five 3rd instars at the ear zone during tassel, dough, and dent stages. Survival decreased as the corn progressed …

Genome Sequence Of The Pea Aphid Acyrthosiphon Pisum, Jennifer A. Brisson, Stephen Richards, International Aphid Genomics Consortium

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Aphids are important agricultural pests and also biological models for studies of insect-plant interactions, symbiosis, virus vectoring, and the developmental causes of extreme phenotypic plasticity. Here we present the 464 Mb draft genome assembly of the pea aphid Acyrthosiphon pisum. This first published whole genome sequence of a basal hemimetabolous insect provides an outgroup to the multiple published genomes of holometabolous insects. Pea aphids are host-plant specialists, they can reproduce both sexually and asexually, and they have coevolved with an obligate bacterial symbiont. Here we highlight findings from whole genome analysis that may be related to these unusual biological …

Pregnancy: A "Teachable Moment" For Weight Control And Obesity Prevention, Suzanne Phelan Feb 2010

Pregnancy: A "Teachable Moment" For Weight Control And Obesity Prevention, Suzanne Phelan

Kinesiology and Public Health

Excessive gestational weight gain has been shown to relate to high-postpartum weight retention and the development of overweight and obesity later in life. Because many women are concerned about the health of their babies during pregnancy and are in frequent contact with their healthcare providers, pregnancy may be an especially powerful "teachable moment" for the promotion of healthy eating and physical activity behaviors among women. Initial research suggests that helping women gain the recommended amount during pregnancy through healthy eating and physical activity could make a major contribution to the prevention of postpartum weight retention. However, more randomized controlled trials …

Using Education, Exposure, And Environments To Increase Preschool Children's Knowledge About Fruit And Vegetables, Brandi S. Niemeier, Desiree L. Tande, Joyce Hwang, Sherri Stastny, Joel M. Hektner Feb 2010

Using Education, Exposure, And Environments To Increase Preschool Children's Knowledge About Fruit And Vegetables, Brandi S. Niemeier, Desiree L. Tande, Joyce Hwang, Sherri Stastny, Joel M. Hektner

Journal of Extension

Because children's eating habits predict their adult eating habits, educating children about healthy foods is essential (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2000). A Midwest Extension Service created and delivered an educational experience for preschool children to increase knowledge of fruits and vegetables. The knowledge assessment scores (range of 0 to 7) increased from 3.5 (± 1.8) to 5.9 (± 1.9) (p < 0.001, n = 19) following the program. Analysis concluded that the children learned about fruits and vegetables through this experience. Other educators can readily adapted the program for a range of age groups and settings.

Domestication Alone Does Not Lead To Inequality: Intergenerational Wealth Transmission Among Horticulturalists, Michael Gurven, Monique Borgerhoff Mulder, Paul L. Domestication Alone Does Not Lead To Inequality: Intergenerational Wealth Transmission Among Horticulturalists, Michael Gurven, Monique Borgerhoff Mulder, Paul L. Hooper, Hillard Kaplan, Robert Quinlan, Rebecca Sear, Eric Schniter, Christopher Von Rueden, Samuel Bowles, Tom Hertz, Adrian Bell

Jepson School of Leadership Studies articles, book chapters and other publications

We present empirical measures of wealth inequality and its intergenerational transmission among four horticulturalist populations. Wealth is construed broadly as embodied somatic and neural capital, including body size, fertility and cultural knowledge, material capital such as land and household wealth, and relational capital in the form of coalitional support and field labor. Wealth inequality is moderate for most forms of wealth, and intergenerational wealth transmission is low for material resources and moderate for embodied and relational wealth. Our analysis suggests that domestication alone does not transform social structure; rather, the presence of scarce, defensible resources may be required before inequality …

Community Strategic Visioning As A Method To Define And Address Poverty: An Analysis From Select Rural Montana Communities, Paul Lachapelle, Eric Austin, Daniel Clark Feb 2010

Community Strategic Visioning As A Method To Define And Address Poverty: An Analysis From Select Rural Montana Communities, Paul Lachapelle, Eric Austin, Daniel Clark

Journal of Extension

Community strategic visioning is a citizen-based planning process in which diverse sectors of a community collectively determine a future state and coordinate a plan of action. Twenty-one communities in rural Montana participated in a multi-phase poverty reduction program that culminated in a community strategic vision process. Research on this process was guided by alternative definitions of poverty and place attachment literature. Results from the qualitative survey data show many descriptions of poverty outside of traditional economic definitions and illustrations on the significance of place. Implications and recommendations on the use of visioning in other contexts in Extension are discussed.

Explaining Low Rates Of Autism Among Hispanic Schoolchildren In Texas, Raymond F. Palmer, Tatjana Walker, David Mandell, Bryan Bayles, Claudia S. Miller Feb 2010

Explaining Low Rates Of Autism Among Hispanic Schoolchildren In Texas, Raymond F. Palmer, Tatjana Walker, David Mandell, Bryan Bayles, Claudia S. Miller

Public Health (Archived)

In data from the Texas Educational Agency and the Health Resources and Services Administration, we found fewer autism diagnoses in school districts with higher percentages of Hispanic children. Our results are consistent with previous reports of autism rates 2 to 3 times as high among non-Hispanic Whites as among Hispanics. Socioeconomic factors failed to explain lower autism prevalence among Hispanic schoolchildren in Texas. These findings raise questions: Is autism underdiagnosed among Hispanics? Are there protective factors associated with Hispanic ethnicity?

Acute Necrotizing Encephalopathy Of Childhood: A Fatal Complication Of Swine Flu, Muhammad Rehan Khan, Prem Kumar Maheshwari, Syed Asad Ali, Anwarul Haque

Department of Paediatrics and Child Health

Acute necrotizing encephalopathy of childhood (ANEC) is a rare condition characterized by the presence of multifocal symmetrical brain lesions involving mainly thalami, brainstem, cerebellum and white matter. ANEC is a serious and life threatening complication of simple viral infections. We present a case of a young child who developed this condition with classical clinical and radiological findings consistent with ANEC, secondary to swine flu (H1N1). He needed ventilatory support and had profound motor and intellectual deficit on discharge. We report this case with aim of raising awareness about this fatal complication of swine flu which has become a global health …

Mashed, Adam Fisher Feb 2010

Mashed, Adam Fisher

Theses

My thesis film, "Mashed", was created with multiple purposes in mind. I wanted to use and build on everything I learned at RIT, entertain both young and old audiences, and support my belief that shooting mediums should be a choice tailored to fit the needs and purposes of a character in a film. Popular trends in animation and visual effects sometimes overshadow the fact that technological advancements benefit more than just computer-generated graphics. Convincing stop-motion characters (and characters of other mediums) can benefit from these same advancements, and even coexist with multiple other styles within the same frame. My film …

Do Oil Exports Fuel Defense Spending?, Clayton K. S. Chun Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

This monograph explores the impact that oil revenue had on the national defense spending of five oil-exporting countries. Despite periods of falling oil revenues, these countries typically did not lower defense spending. In some cases, defense spending increased sharply, or the rate of decrease was much lower than the drop in oil revenues. This condition creates challenges for national security professionals. If nations face falling oil revenues and still have the will and ability to expand their military or security capabilities, then they might do so through the sacrifice of domestic spending or regional stability. Economic sanctions, worldwide recession, or …

Breaking The Mould 4 : Condensation Risk Analysis – The Standards And The Issues, Joseph Little

Articles

The ‘Breaking the Mould’ series of articles was written to explore the range of issues associated with upgrading single leaf walls with a focus on occupant and building health as much as energy, just as the Home Energy Saving Scheme was launched. A year on from the first article the need for greater understanding and clear guidance for the Industry is greater than ever. This is because the Government’s ‘Energy Demand Reduction Target’ (EDRT), under the 2006 EU ‘Energy Services Directive’, is bringing energy utilities (e.g. ESB, Bord Gáis) into the refurbishment market.

Journal of Extension

Eat Smart, Move More, Weigh Less (ESMMWL) is a 19-week weight-management program that is delivered by local educators. Published research data were used to identify strategies that would lead to weight loss and/or weight maintenance. The program uses the Theory of Planned Behavior, informing, empowering, and motivating participants to live mindfully as they make choices about eating and physical activity. The program provides opportunities for participants to keep a journal of healthy eating and physical activity behaviors. ESMMWL is offered at worksites and at other sites for people interested in eating smart, moving more, and achieving a healthy weight.

Working Smart: Increasing The Reach Of Extension Programming Through Media Advertising, Marsha Lockard, Barbara Petty, Joey Peutz, Marnie Spencer, Rhea Lanting, Harriet Shaklee

Journal of Extension

A successful Extension program requires effective marketing strategies. Extension educators commit extensive time and resources to prepare an educational program, but who will attend the event? A well prepared program with poor attendance frustrates the presenter and wastes precious Extension resources. As county programs work within the financial constraints of lean economic times, ineffective program marketing is unaffordable. This article shares the results of a study conducted to compare the enrollment numbers for FCS education programs that were promoted using either free and then paid advertising methods. Paid advertizing resulted in sizeable increases in enrollment for FCS Extension programs.

A Powerful Teaching Tool: Self-Produced Videos, Patty Case, Jeff Hino

Journal of Extension

Video—once complex and expensive to create with high distribution costs—has become more affordable and highly accessible in addition to being a powerful teaching tool. Self-produced videos are one way educators can connect with a growing number of on-line learners. The authors describe a pilot project in which a series of video clips were produced on home gardening and cooking. Tips are offered on how educators can prepare themselves to produce their own videos.

Sperm Morphometrics In The Diamond-Backed Watersnake, Nerodia Rhombifer Hallowell, With Reference To Possible Implications On Sperm Competition, Jonathan Wade Stanley

Student Theses and Dissertations

A total of 46 male Diamond-backed Watersnakes, Nerodia rhombifer Hallowell were collected from Mallard Lake in Mississippi County, Arkansas and a catfish farm in Desha County, Arkansas to determine effects that the farm may have on sperm morphometrics in this species. Snout-vent lengths (SVL) were recorded and blood samples were collected for hematocrit (Hct) determination. Sperm were collected, viewed by scanning electron microscopy, and measured for overall length, head length, and tail length. Snakes from the fish farm had significantly longer SVL than did snakes from Mallard Lake. No correlation was found between Hct values and SVL, but differences were …
