Antioxidant And Immune-Stimulating Activities Of Hot-Water Extract From Seaweed Sargassum Hemiphyllum, Pai-An Hwang, Chwen-Herng Wu, Shu-Yun Gau, Shih-Yung Chien, Deng-Fwu Hwang
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
The hot-water extract of seaweed Sargassum hemiphyllum was evaluated antioxidant activity by using four different methods, including DPPH free radicals scavenging activity, Fe+2 chelating activity, superoxide anion radical scavenging activity and reducing power, and the immune-stimulating activity by using HB4C5 cells and J774.1 cells. It was found that the antioxidant activity was increasing in correlating with the concentration below 3.5 mg/ml. The HB4C5 cells showed the maximum relative activities of cell proliferation (174%) and IgM secretion (132%) at 120 µg/ml of hot-water extract. Overheating slightly reduced the immune-stimulating activity of hot-water extract. At 80 µg/ml, J774.1 cells showed the maximum …
The Sensitivity In Methods Of Measuring Conditioned Flavor Aversions And Conditioned Flavor Preferences, Jacinda T. Bunting-Dady
The Sensitivity In Methods Of Measuring Conditioned Flavor Aversions And Conditioned Flavor Preferences, Jacinda T. Bunting-Dady
McNair Scholars Research Journal
This project investigated a multiple measurement procedure to assess conditioned flavor aversions (CFA) and conditioned flavor preferences (CFP) in male albino rats. Volume consumed is currently the most common and often the sole method used. Most studies employ group designs, whereas this study used a single-subject design to compare behavior patters and responses between individual rats. Response measurements include: total licks, lick rate, lick patterns, volume (ml) consumed, volume (ml) per lick. Strong CFA showed consistent decreases in total licks, lick rate, total volume, ad volume per lick. CFP was evident, although not consistent, in total licks, lick rate, total …

Universal Features Of Post-Transcriptional Gene Regulation Are Critical For Plasmodium Zygote Development, Gr Mair, E Lasonder, Ls Garver, Bmd Franke-Fayard, Et Al
School of Biomedical Sciences
A universal feature of metazoan sexual development is the generation of oocyte P granules that withhold certain mRNA species from translation to provide coding potential for proteins during early post-fertilization development. Stabilisation of translationally quiescent mRNA pools in female Plasmodium gametocytes depends on the RNA helicase DOZI, but the molecular machinery involved in the silencing of transcripts in these protozoans is unknown. Using affinity purification coupled with mass-spectrometric analysis we identify a messenger ribonucleoprotein (mRNP) from Plasmodium berghei gametocytes defined by DOZI and the Sm-like factor CITH (homolog of worm CAR-I and fly Trailer Hitch). This mRNP includes 16 major …

An Analysis Of The Sexual Dimorphism Of Hands : Atractiveness, Symmetry And Person Perception, Laura Kristi Dane
An Analysis Of The Sexual Dimorphism Of Hands : Atractiveness, Symmetry And Person Perception, Laura Kristi Dane
Psychology ETDs
Like faces, hands and forearms may provide cues to quality and sex-typical hormone exposure used in mate choice. To date second-to-fourth digit ratio is the only measure that has been used to evaluate hand attractiveness. Two sexually dimorphic components were extracted from measurements taken on 62 male and 68 female hands and forearms. These components were combined to create an objective hand masculinity index. Sex-typical scores on this objective measure were associated with sexually dimorphic facial features, greater symmetry, sex typical 2D:4D (low for men and high for women) in Anglo participants and low finger ridge counts in both sexes. …
