Low Endemism, Continued Deep-Shallow Interchanges, And Evidence For Cosmopolitan Distributions In Free-Living Marine Nematodes (Order Enoplida), Holly M. Bik, W. Kelley Thomas, David H. Lunt, P. John D. Lambshead

Hubbard Center for Genome Studies (HCGS)

Background: Nematodes represent the most abundant benthic metazoa in one of the largest habitats on earth, the deep sea. Characterizing major patterns of biodiversity within this dominant group is a critical step towards understanding evolutionary patterns across this vast ecosystem. The present study has aimed to place deep-sea nematode species into a phylogenetic framework, investigate relationships between shallow water and deep-sea taxa, and elucidate phylogeographic patterns amongst the deep-sea fauna. Results: Molecular data (18 S and 28 S rRNA) confirms a high diversity amongst deep-sea Enoplids. There is no evidence for endemic deep-sea lineages in Maximum Likelihood or Bayesian phylogenies, …

3000 Steps In 30 Minutes, Five Days Per Week Yields Metabolic Improvements Compared To 150 Weekly Minutes, Valerie Ann Lambert

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

The physical activity recommendation for U.S. adults is to engage in moderate-intensity exercise for at least 150 minutes per week. Pedometers have gained popularity as a tool for motivating and estimating daily physical activity. Recently it was suggested 3000 steps in 30 minutes may be equivalent to moderate-intensity walking. To date, this recommendation has yet to be examined over an extended period of time. PURPOSE: To evaluate changes in cardiorespiratory fitness, body composition, blood lipids, blood glucose, and CRP from 150 minutes of free living weekly exercise compared to pedometer measured 3000 steps in 30 minutes, five days per week. …

Neurochemical Levels Correlate With Population Level Differences In Social Structure And Individual Behavior In The Polyphenic Spider, Anelosimus Studiosus., Jennifer Bryson Price Dec 2010

Neurochemical Levels Correlate With Population Level Differences In Social Structure And Individual Behavior In The Polyphenic Spider, Anelosimus Studiosus., Jennifer Bryson Price

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Anelosimus studiosus is a socially polyphenic spider. Individuals can be classified as social/tolerant or solitary/aggressive. These behavioral differences are associated with considerable variation in social structure. Here, we begin to examine the physiological differences that may underlie the behavioral dimorphism in this species and possible implications for the evolution of sociality. Octopamine is a neurotransmitter that has been found to elevate aggression in invertebrates. Serotonin has been shown, in some cases, to interact antagonistically with octopamine. We used High Pressure Liquid Chromatography with Electrochemical Detection to quantify levels of these neurochemicals among adult females from social (multi-female) and solitary (single-female) …

Pinus Elliottii Var. Densa Seedling Performance Reflects Ectomycorrhizas, Soil Nutrient Availability And Root Competition, Tania Wyss Lozano Hoyos Dec 2010

Pinus Elliottii Var. Densa Seedling Performance Reflects Ectomycorrhizas, Soil Nutrient Availability And Root Competition, Tania Wyss Lozano Hoyos

Open Access Dissertations

Ectomycorrhizas generally improve seedling mineral nutrition and growth, so I hypothesized that decline of the Florida native pine variety Pinus elliottii var. densa Little & Dorman is related to deficiency of appropriate ectomycorrhizal (ECM) fungi in the pine's native flatwoods. At Archbold Biological Station I examined how quickly ECM fungi colonize P. elliottii var. densa seedlings and I compared the effect of local absence versus presence of adult pines on ECM colonization and pine seedling performance. Under controlled greenhouse conditions, I investigated how a wide range of ECM colonization and spread of extraradical mycelium throughout a large volume of relatively …

Mate Choice In A Sexually Dimorphic Marine Bird, The Great Frigatebird (Fregata Minor), Frans A. Juola Dec 2010

Mate Choice In A Sexually Dimorphic Marine Bird, The Great Frigatebird (Fregata Minor), Frans A. Juola

Open Access Dissertations

Darwin's theory of sexual selection explains the existence of sexual dimorphism, or within-species sex differences in shape, color, size, and behavior. In some cases, sexually dimorphic traits, especially extravagant male ornaments, seem maladaptive and thus in opposition to natural selection. The crux of Darwin's theory was that sexual selection arises from individual differences in reproductive success that result from competition for mates. In this dissertation, I investigated several aspects of sexual selection and the evolution of female mating preferences and male ornaments in the great frigatebird (Fregata minor). Frigatebirds as a group (family Fregatidae) are the most ornamented of any …

The Effect Of Passive Stretching And Isometric Contractions On Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness After A Typical Bout Of Exercise, John W. Gibson Dec 2010

The Effect Of Passive Stretching And Isometric Contractions On Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness After A Typical Bout Of Exercise, John W. Gibson

Theses and Dissertations

Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS) is a common response to activities involving lengthening contractions. Muscle inflammation is associated with DOMS and may play an integral role in protecting a muscle from damage and soreness in response to subsequent bouts of lengthening contractions. Research in animals has shown that prior exposure to passive stretching and isometric contractions of a muscle resulting in muscle inflammation attenuates the muscle inflammatory response following subsequent bouts of lengthening contractions. The purpose of this study was to determine whether passive stretching and isometric contractions in humans would reduce DOMS following a typical bout of resistance exercise. …

The Effects Of Chronic Ampk Activation On Hepatic Triglyceride Accumulation And Glycerol-3-Phosphate Acyltransferaseactivity With High Fat Feeding, Mary E. Curtis Dec 2010

The Effects Of Chronic Ampk Activation On Hepatic Triglyceride Accumulation And Glycerol-3-Phosphate Acyltransferaseactivity With High Fat Feeding, Mary E. Curtis

Theses and Dissertations

High fat feeding increases hepatic fat accumulation and is associated with hepatic insulin resistance. AMP Activated Protein Kinase (AMPK) is thought to inhibit lipid synthesis by the acute inhibition of glycerol-3-phosphate acyltransferase (GPAT) activity and transcriptional regulation via SREBP-1c. The purpose of this study was to determine if chronic activation of AMPK prevented an increase in GPAT1 activity in rats fed a high fat diet. Rats were fed a control (C), or a high fat (HF) diet (60% fat) for 6 weeks and injected with saline or a daily AICAR dose of 0.5 mg/g body weight. Chronic AMPK activation by …

With the Earth’s human population estimated to exceed 10 billion by 2050, the now globalised community has some serious discussions involving the upcoming, necessary transition to sustainable habitation and preventative healthcare. This paper examines the social and economic structures preventing this transition at individual, national and multinational levels and their responsibilities to public health. Greater responsibility for ones individual health and consumption is essential and should be supported and encouraged by national governance that in turn has a responsibility to provide the environment in which healthy sustainable lifestyles are achievable and affordable. Multi-national corporations must also accept their responsibilities to …

More Than One In Ten American Households Relies On Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Benefits, Jessica A. Bean, Marybeth J. Mattingly Dec 2010

More Than One In Ten American Households Relies On Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Benefits, Jessica A. Bean, Marybeth J. Mattingly

Carsey Publications

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is one of the most responsive federal programs to economic downturns, as evidence by the increases in SNAP use between 2007 and 2009. Nationally, more than one in ten households relies on SNAP benefits, and the rate is even higher in rural areas, with more than 13 percent of households reporting use. This brief examines the trends in SNAP use across the United States since the recession began in 2007 and considers the impact of legislation in the Congress on those who rely on SNAP to make ends meet.
