Female Mate Choice Based Upon Male Motor Performance, John Byers, Eileen Hebets, Jeffrey Podos Apr 2010

Female Mate Choice Based Upon Male Motor Performance, John Byers, Eileen Hebets, Jeffrey Podos

Eileen Hebets Publications

Our goal in this essay is to review the hypothesis that females choose mates by the evaluation of male motor performance. We define motor performance as vigor, the ability to perform energetically expensive acts repeatedly, or as skill, the ability to perform difficult motor tasks well. Motor performance reflects most aspects of whole-organism performance that relate to survival, and thus should indicate, more reliably than ornaments do, individual male genetic quality and/or developmental history. Male sexual displays in many animal taxa contain elements of vigor and/or skill, and accumulating evidence suggests that females choose mates in nature based upon their …

U.S. Animal Agriculture Policy: Problems And Solutions, Steven Mischel Apr 2010

U.S. Animal Agriculture Policy: Problems And Solutions, Steven Mischel

Major Themes in Economics

The current structure of the American animal agriculture industry is fraught with problems. The externalities from it are disproportionately felt by a limited group of individuals who lack political and economic influence. Far from taxing or constraining animal agriculture, The U.S. Government subsidizes its worst practices through a variety of direct and indirect methods. This paper recommends four specific reforms in agriculture policy that will level the playing field for small farmers and push the industry toward greater economic efficiency.

Can The ‘Fat Tax’ Carry Its Weight?, Carl Bakker Apr 2010

Can The ‘Fat Tax’ Carry Its Weight?, Carl Bakker

Major Themes in Economics

Obesity is a rising problem in America and is blamed for externalities such as increasing health care costs. Some have proposed taxes on “unhealthy” foods so as to internalize the externalities and to generate revenue to subsidize “healthy” foods. I examine several such proposals and conclude that taxes based on perceived externalities from the obese are not the best options. Other solutions such as increasing awareness and nutritional programs would be better.

Internal Displacement: Recent History, Visions For The Action Ahead, Mayela Calderon

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This research project is meant entirely to highlight the suffering of millions of people around the world outside of their homes and inspire the addressing of this. Internally displaced people face human rights violations on all levels starting from political representation all the way to their basic needs and when their national government who has the primary responsibility, is either unable or unwilling to do something about this, it is up to the international community and civil society to ensure these rights are being fulfilled. The mainstreaming of this topic is essential to pressure influential actors to mobilize and achieve …

Painting The Town Green: Realities, Challenges, And Possibilities In Mexico City’S Budding Urban Agriculture Movement, Molly Alexandra Croog

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This paper explores the Urban Agriculture movement in Mexico City. It investigates who is practicing Urban Agriculture, how, and why. It looks the benefits of Urban Agriculture, and Urban Agriculture’s role in a potential future food system that does not rely on transnational corporations for supply. The paper begins by discussing the significance of food as nutrition, and how the individual’s right to food has been transformed into the corporation’s right to make a profit off of food. The concept of food security and food sovereignty and their place in the organic Urban Agriculture movement are then explained. Three Urban …

Lead-Phase And Red-Stripe Color Morphs Of Red-Backed Salamanders (Plethodon Cinereus) Differ In Hematological Stress Indices: A Consequence Of Differential Predation Pressure?, Andrew K. Davis, Joseph Milanovich Apr 2010

Lead-Phase And Red-Stripe Color Morphs Of Red-Backed Salamanders (Plethodon Cinereus) Differ In Hematological Stress Indices: A Consequence Of Differential Predation Pressure?, Andrew K. Davis, Joseph Milanovich

Biology: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Throughout the animal kingdom there are species that have two or more phenotypic forms or ‘morphs’, and many of these are amphibians. In North America, the red-backed salamander Plethodon cinereus can have either a red dorsal stripe or no dorsal stripe (lead-phase form), and evidence to date indicates the lead-phase form incurs a greater number of attacks from predators. In a recent collection of 51 P. cinereus, blood smears of both color morphs (35 red-stripe, 16 lead-phase) were examined to obtain numbers of circulating leukocytes (via light microscopy), which can be used to indirectly estimate levels of stress hormones …

The Effects Of Ornamentation On Wolf Spider Foraging, Mari Pesek Apr 2010

The Effects Of Ornamentation On Wolf Spider Foraging, Mari Pesek

Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses

ABSTRACT: As a secondary sexual trait that can increase reproductive success, ornamentation is believed to be costly for organisms to acquire and possess. This study investigates possible costs of ornamentation on wolf spider foraging by comparing foraging abilities of two male forms that differ in ornamentation upon maturation. The two male forms, found syntopically in a mixed population in Mississippi, USA, resemble two sibling species: Schizocosa ocreata, in which males develop large black brushes on their forelegs upon maturation, and Schizocosa rovneri, in which males lack ornamentation following maturation. Individuals of both forms participated in foraging trials as penultimates (juveniles) …

Developing An Educational Module For Advanced Practice Nurses: The Screening And Management Of Postpartum Depression In Primary Care, Lynne Weiler Apr 2010

Developing An Educational Module For Advanced Practice Nurses: The Screening And Management Of Postpartum Depression In Primary Care, Lynne Weiler

Nursing Masters

Postpartum depression (PPD) is thought to affect 13% of new mothers. Yet it is believed that up to 50% of cases escape detection, resulting in a host of adverse sequelae for mother, infant and family. The current state of the science is promising, as advances in pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy have demonstrated PPD's amenability to treatment. However, expertise among providers appears to be deficient, as seen in survey results which portray most physicians and nurse practitioners largely ill-equipped to detect and deal with PPD. A rich opportunity to intervene exists, particularly within primary care settings, where suffering women may be encountered. …

Urban School Counselors' Perceptions Of Low-Income Families, Rebekah F. Cole Apr 2010

Urban School Counselors' Perceptions Of Low-Income Families, Rebekah F. Cole

Counseling & Human Services Theses & Dissertations

There is a paucity of research on the topic of professional school counselors and their perceptions of families. The purpose of this phenomenological, qualitative study was to examine how urban professional school counselors perceive low-income families in their schools. To accomplish this investigation, ten school counselors in two urban school districts were interviewed twice and were then sent an email with follow-up questions. The data was analyzed for themes and patterns, which were subjected to verification procedures. Three categories emerged from the data: urban school counselors' perceptions of the low-income families in their schools, effects of school counselors' perceptions on …

Inter-Island Variability In Above And Belowground Plant Biomass In Interior Marshes On The Virginia Barrier Islands, Staci B. Blecha Apr 2010

Inter-Island Variability In Above And Belowground Plant Biomass In Interior Marshes On The Virginia Barrier Islands, Staci B. Blecha

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

The Virginia Coast Reserve's Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) site is of great interest because the barrier islands have been migrating, rapidly at times, and are exceptionally dynamic. The barrier islands have tidal saltwater marshes on the lagoon side and freshwater marshes on the island interiors. In these interior marshes on North Hog Island, South Smith Island, and North Parramore Island, salinity and depth to water table were measured to determine if these factors were influencing biomass and biomass allocation patterns in the marsh. Hog Island had the freshest interior marshes (0 and 0.7 ppm), and the most diverse (H'=0.84 …

Evaluation Of Phorbol Ester Toxicity Of Jatropha Curcas Using Tilapia (Oreochromis Niloticus L.) Bioassay., Rodessa Marasigan De Castro

Undergraduate Theses

The use of Jatropha curcas L. as a feedstock for the production of biodiesel is rapidly growing. The cake after oil extraction is rich in protein and is a potential source of animal feed. However, because of the high toxicity of the cake due to the presence of phorbol esters, the cake was subjected to alkali, ethanol and fermentation treatments to remove or reduce the amount of phorbol esters in the cake. Toxicity studies were conducted on tilapia fingerlings by feeding treated as well as untreated cake. The fish fed with raw Jatropha cake was observed to have reduced appetite …
