Proportionality In Middle-School Mathematics Textbooks, Gwendolyn Joy Johnson
Proportionality In Middle-School Mathematics Textbooks, Gwendolyn Joy Johnson
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Some scholars have criticized the treatment of proportionality in middle-school textbooks, but these criticisms seem to be based on informal knowledge of the content of textbooks rather than on a detailed curriculum analysis. Thus, a curriculum analysis related to proportionality was needed.
To investigate the treatment of proportionality in current middle-school textbooks, nine such books were analyzed. Sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-grade textbooks from three series were used: ConnectedMathematics2 (CMP), Glencoe's Math Connects, and the University of Chicago School Mathematics Project (UCSMP). Lessons with a focus on proportionality were selected from four content areas: algebra, data analysis/probability, geometry/measurement, and rational …
Natural Competence In Thermoanaerobacter And Thermoanaerobacterium Species, A Joe Shaw, David A. Hogsett, Lee R. Lynd
Natural Competence In Thermoanaerobacter And Thermoanaerobacterium Species, A Joe Shaw, David A. Hogsett, Lee R. Lynd
Dartmouth Scholarship
Low-G+C thermophilic obligate anaerobes in the class Clostridia are considered among the bacteria most resistant to genetic engineering due to the difficulty of introducing foreign DNA, thus limiting the ability to study and exploit their native hydrolytic and fermentative capabilities. Here, we report evidence of natural genetic competence in 13 Thermoanaerobacter and Thermoanaerobacterium strains previously believed to be difficult to transform or genetically recalcitrant.
In Thermoanaerobacterium saccharolyticum JW/SL-YS485, natural competence- mediated DNA incorporation occurs during the exponential growth phase with both replicating plasmid and homologous recombination-based integration, and circular or linear DNA. In T. saccharolyticum, disruptions of genes similar to …

Use Of Pedometers To Increase Physical Activity In African American Females, William-Robert Lance Penn
Use Of Pedometers To Increase Physical Activity In African American Females, William-Robert Lance Penn
Student Theses and Dissertations
African American females are a largely sedentary population, and because of this are an increased risk for heart disease, diabetes, and obesity. Healthcare providers have prescribed an increase in physical activity and modification of diet to decrease the risk of onset of these diseases. Pedometers are currently being used to encourage and track physical activity levels in an effort to increase physical activity and decrease risk of hypokenetic diseases. Pedometers have been proven to increase the physical activity of an individual and decrease weight and blood pressure. The purpose of this study was to determine if African American females showed …

The Development Of A Novel Multi-Dimensional Product For Wound Healing Applications, Necrisha Roach
The Development Of A Novel Multi-Dimensional Product For Wound Healing Applications, Necrisha Roach
Theses and Dissertations
A characteristic feature of chronic wounds is a prolonged inflammatory response as well as susceptibility to infection. Studies have shown that during the inflammatory response, there is a significant increase in the levels of neutrophil-derived enzymes. The purpose of this work was to determine whether the anionic macromolecule polystyrene sulfonate (PSS) and five of its salt forms, namely PSS-calcium, PSS-chlorhexidine, PSS-doxycycline, PSS-glutathione and PSS-silver are able to inhibit the activity of three of the enzymes whose levels are elevated in chronic wounds: elastase, cathepsin G and myeloperoxidase. In addition to the enzyme inhibition study, the various formulations’ antimicrobial properties were …

Medical-Legal Partnerships: Addressing The Unmet Legal Needs Of Health Center Patients, Peter Shin, Fraser Rothenberg Byrne, Emily Jones, Joel B. Teitelbaum, Lee Repasch, Sara J. Rosenbaum
Geiger Gibson/RCHN Community Health Foundation Research Collaborative
Medical-legal partnerships (MLPs), now available at over 180 hospitals and health centers across 38 states, are an important option for addressing the legal needs affecting low-income and vulnerable patients, and thereby improving their overall health. We estimate that each year, anywhere between 50 and 85 percent of health centers users - or between ten and 17 million people - experience unmet legal needs, many of which negatively impact their health. In a medical-legal partnership, health care staff at hospitals, clinics, and other sites are trained to screen for health-related legal issues, refer the patient to an affiliated lawyer or legal …
Maternal Attitudes Related To Infant Feeding And Breastfeeding Behaviors In Taiwan, Yen-Ju Ho
Maternal Attitudes Related To Infant Feeding And Breastfeeding Behaviors In Taiwan, Yen-Ju Ho
Theses and Dissertations
Background: The government in Taiwan has promoted breastfeeding in recent years yet, exclusive initiation rates and continuation of breastfeeding remain low. Maternal attitudes have been found to be better predictors of infant feeding method during the postpartum period than socio-demographic factors. Understanding maternal attitudes related to infant feeding in Taiwan will support the development of better targeted, more effective health promotion programs aimed at increasing breastfeeding rates. Objectives: To examine maternal attitudes toward breastfeeding and the relationship of these factors to breastfeeding duration at six weeks postpartum. The Iowa Infant Feeding Attitude Scale (IIFAS) was translated into Chinese for this …
Neutrophil Products Control The Expression Of Progesterone Receptors And Matrix Metalloproteinase-1 In The Decidual And Myometrium And Are Possible Regulators Of Premature Labor, Anna Solotskaya
Theses and Dissertations
Neutrophils infiltrate myometrium and decidual tissue prior to parturition. Activated neutrophils release reactive oxygen species (ROS) and tumor necrosis factor α (TNFα), which might increase expression of pro-labor genes such as matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1), progesterone receptor (PR) A/B ratio, and cause demethylation of DNA. These changes might cause labor. Decidual tissue was obtained from consented, healthy women at term (37+ weeks of gestation) not in labor (no contractions, without cervical effacement), term labor and preterm labor (under 37 weeks of pregnancy). Decidual and myometrial cells in culture were treated with (1) ROS, (2) TNFα, or (3) 5-aza-2’-deoxycytidine. Total RNA was …

At The Intersection Of Neoliberal Development, Scarce Resources, And Human Rights: Enforcing The Right To Water In South Africa, Elizabeth A. Larson
At The Intersection Of Neoliberal Development, Scarce Resources, And Human Rights: Enforcing The Right To Water In South Africa, Elizabeth A. Larson
International Studies Honors Projects
The competing ideals of international human rights and global economic neoliberalism come into conflict when developing countries try to enforce socio-economic rights. This paper explores the intersection of economic globalization and the enforcement of 2nd generation human rights. The focus of this exploration is the right to water in South Africa, specifically the recent Constitutional Court case Mazibuko v City of Johannesburg. While a right to water can be constructed at the international level, the right disappears in the face of neoliberal development measures such as those that are instituted by democratic governments in developing nations faced with limited resources.
Mutation Of The Vesicular Monoamine Transporter-1 Gene Alters Its Protein Product, Abena Watson-Siriboe
Mutation Of The Vesicular Monoamine Transporter-1 Gene Alters Its Protein Product, Abena Watson-Siriboe
Theses and Dissertations
The vesicular monoamine transporter 1 (VMAT1) is essential for storage of monoamines, such as epinephrine and serotonin, in secretory vesicles of neuroendocrine cells. Recently the VMAT1 protein was detected in human and mouse brain, and mutations of the VMAT1 gene at single DNA nucleotides (single nucleotide polymorphisms or SNPs) were associated with schizophrenia. In this study, Chinese hamster ovarian cells were stably transfected with either human VMAT1 DNA (GenBank: #NM_003053.1 or DNA with the Thr4Pro SNP, which results in a threonine to proline change in amino acid number 4 of the VMAT1 protein. Western blot analysis revealed that cells with …

The Education And Miseducation Of Boys In Cultural, Political, And Christian Perspective, Mark A. Lamport, Ph.D., Roseclaire Bulgin
Christian Perspectives in Education
The trend of higher male achievement at of all levels of education has reversed in the last twenty years, in almost every major country except Japan, sparking global political and social debate about this intriguing phenomenon. Several cultural trends may contribute to this swing, including, but not limited to, a recent vibrant call for equity education for girls; shifting social norms of traditionally held views of masculinity and male dominance in the job market, academia, and society; delayed maturation physically and cognitively of the average male; teacher competence in the science of educating boys; school structures that are antithetical to …

Growth Hormone Alters Lipid Composition And Increases The Abundance Of Casein And Lactalbumin Mrna In The Mac-T Cell Line, Tasha L. Johnson, Brent A. S. Fujimoto, Rafael Jiménez-Flores, Daniel G. Peterson
Dairy Science
The MAC-T cell line has been used extensively to investigate bovine mammary epithelial cell function. A lactogenic phenotype is generally induced in this cell line by a combination of dexamethasone, insulin and prolactin and has typically been assessed by milk protein production. Few studies have focused on identifying other factors that may affect milk protein synthesis in the MAC-T cell line, and none have considered the lipid class distribution of MAC-T cells as a component of the lactogenic phenotype. Growth hormone (GH) has been shown to increase milk protein synthesis both in vivo and in mammary cell models, and has …
Lipid Rafts In The Bovine Milk Fat Globule Membrane Revealed By The Lateral Segregation Of Phospholipids And Heterogeneous Distribution Of Glycoproteins, Christelle Lopez, Marie-Noëlle Madec, Rafael Jiménez-Flores
Dairy Science
This study reveals the lateral organisation of the milk fat globule membrane (MFGM). Using confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) and a lipid soluble molecule, an exogenous phospholipid and two lectins as fluorescent probes we located triacylglycerols in the core of fat globules and investigated the organisation of the polar lipids and glycoproteins of the MFGM, in situ in milk. Lipid rafts corresponding to the lateral segregation of sphingolipids in liquid-ordered phases surrounded by liquid-disordered domains composed by the glycerophospholipids were observed in the MFGM. These lipid rafts which correspond to rigid sphingolipid-rich domains have a circular shape at room temperature. …
Investigation Of High Salt Intake And Adipogenesis In Rats, May Yong
Investigation Of High Salt Intake And Adipogenesis In Rats, May Yong
Biological Sciences
Sodium chloride has been scrutinized of late, not only for its liberal use as a food preservative but for its contribution to disease states. The causal role of habitual high salt intake in increasing blood pressure and exacerbating hypertension has been established. A growing body of evidence strongly suggests that hypertension contributes to other conditions such as cardiovascular disease, obesity, stroke, and type II diabetes. Rates of hypertension are significantly higher in obese individuals. These comorbidities have been positively associated with the modern Western diet. Worldwide, many government and health organizations have called for public policy measures to mandate sodium …
Advocacy Group Activity In The New Media Environment, David Karpf
Advocacy Group Activity In The New Media Environment, David Karpf
2010
This paper presents an analysis of early data from the newly-launched Membership Communications Project (MCP). The MCP is a data-aggregation effort concerned with tracking the email practices of progressive advocacy organizations in American politics. Based on 2.5 months of data collection across 70 organizations (998 messages in total), the goal of the paper is twofold. First, the paper establishes the purpose behind and construction of the MCP dataset, offering an “annotated user’s manual” of sorts for interested members of the research community. Data collection will continue for at least six months, and the dataset is freely available to other researchers. …

Abstract
Development of a Proposal for a Program of Post-Rehabilitation Conditioning in a Privately-Owned Commercial Setting
Starlene Marshall
May, 2010
Chronic disease is a serious health problem that can be debilitating or even life threatening. Inactivity has been identified as a major contributor to the burden of disease. More than 50% of American adults are not regularly physically active. Moreover, physical activity is beneficial in the treatment of persons with chronic disease and disability (ACSM's Guidelines, 2010; NCCDPHP, 2004). Post-Rehabilitation Programs are a growing concept in the medical community and fitness industry. Post-rehab conditioning programs encompass: certification, collaboration with the …
