PNIPAM nanoparticles, with and without a covalentlylinked fluorescent label, were prepared by a free radical polymerisation technique. The cyto and genotoxicity of PNIPAM nanoparticles were analysed in two representative mammalian cell lines, SW480, a colon, and HaCaT, a dermal cell line. Physical characterisation in terms of particle size and zeta potential of the PNIPAM nanoparticles was carried out both in aqueous solution and in the appropriate cell culture media. Uptake and colocalisation of fluorescently labelled PNIPAM nanoparticles was monitored in both cell lines using confocal laser scanning microscopy. Genotoxicity analysis using the Comet assay was performed in both cell lines …

New Trends In Automatic Assessment: Ontology Matching, Maria Mitina, Patricia Magee, John Cardiff
Conference Papers
Instant individual feedback represents a result of assessment which allows for considerable improvements in both teaching and learning. In this paper we present the application of ontology matching techniques in automatic correction of students’ answers for SQL tests, which will provide teachers with instant feedback to facilitate manual correction and marking and which they can pass to the students. Students experience many problems learning SQL due to the necessity to memorise database schemas, unclear feedback from the database engine on the execution of the query, etc. The program environment utilising the described approach is designed to solve the abovementioned problems …

Anderson Localization As Position-Dependent Diffusion In Disordered Waveguides, Ben Payne, Alexey Yamilov, Sergey E. Skipetrov
Anderson Localization As Position-Dependent Diffusion In Disordered Waveguides, Ben Payne, Alexey Yamilov, Sergey E. Skipetrov
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
We show that the recently developed self-consistent theory of Anderson localization with a position-dependent diffusion coefficient is in quantitative agreement with the supersymmetry approach up to terms of the order of 1 / g20 (with g0 the dimensionless conductance in the absence of interference effects) and with large-scale ab initio simulations of the classical wave transport in disordered waveguides, at least for g0 ≥ 0.5. In the latter case, agreement is found even in the presence of absorption. Our numerical results confirm that in open disordered media, the onset of Anderson localization can be viewed as …

The Divine Exhaustion Of Myth And Parable In Cronenberg’S A History Of Violence, Rich Cooper
The Divine Exhaustion Of Myth And Parable In Cronenberg’S A History Of Violence, Rich Cooper
Journal of Religion & Film
Cronenberg’s A History of Violence is a film about dichotomies which are not really dichotomies. Wholesome Americana seemingly opposes seedy, urban America, religion seemingly opposes violence, and myth seemingly opposes parable. These oppositions are revealed to be two sides of the same coin. Using the Moebius strip to re-conceptualize the relation between myth and parable, both types of religious stories, this essay reveals the ways in which myth and parable exhaust each other in a cycle of powermaking violence. This exhaustion reveals myth and parable to be inadequate, necessitating divine intervention.
When The Pot Plays Potter: “Isaiah”, Toy Story And Religious Socialization, Paul Tremblay
When The Pot Plays Potter: “Isaiah”, Toy Story And Religious Socialization, Paul Tremblay
Journal of Religion & Film
Biblical verses mentioning the “pot and the potter” entail a God/creation relationship in which the creation is warned not to turn against, or even criticize, the Creator; humankind is advised humility for fear of Yahweh’s punishment. This is a comparative study of three films with a strong emphasis on a children’s film, Toy Story (1995); the movies to be examined are treated as allegories of the concept of potter/pot lesson with a twist as the humans are playing God/potter. The movies geared more to an adult or mature audience (The Matrix [1999] and Terminator [1986]) feature the creation (robots) …
The Admissibility Of Electronic Business Records, Ken Chasse
The Admissibility Of Electronic Business Records, Ken Chasse
Canadian Journal of Law and Technology
The business record provisions of the Evidence Acts determine a record’s admissibility by evidence of its history, which must be the product of “the usual and ordinary course of business” (or comparable “business activity” wording). The electronic record provisions determine a record’s admissibility by the, “integrity of the electronic records system in which it is recorded or stored.” The difference is, records management (RM) based on “paper records concepts” versus “electronic records systems concepts.” The former is subjective — each business determines its own “usual and ordinary course of business”; the latter, objective — in accor- dance with authoritative standards …
Interpreting Copyright Law And Internet Facts, Cameron Hutchison
Interpreting Copyright Law And Internet Facts, Cameron Hutchison
Canadian Journal of Law and Technology
This paper probes interpretation issues elicited by the impact of digital technologies and the Internet on copyright law. The purpose of the paper is to instill a coherent framework for analyzing copyright law when it encounters Internet or digital facts. In part one, I propose a methodology of statutory interpretation that helps suitably adapt statutory language to technological developments. In essence it is this: courts should examine the language of the operative provision in its statutory context and in light of its purpose. A contextual interpretation of a broadly conceived rule can reveal a legislative intention that certain kinds of …

Canada's Digital Economy Strategy: Toward An Openness Framework, Michael Geist
Canadian Journal of Law and Technology
This essay is an expanded version of my submission to the digital economy consultation. It opens with general issues such as digital policy leadership, cost issues, and emphasizes the need for a principle-based strategy that embraces the benefits associated with “open,” whether open access, open spectrum or open data. It then provides specific recommendations on a wide range of issues including tele- communications policy, privacy, and copyright.

Law And Mental Health: A Relationship In Crisis?, Sheila Wildeman
Law And Mental Health: A Relationship In Crisis?, Sheila Wildeman
Dalhousie Law Journal
What is the significance of the rule of law to the area of professional knowledge and practice that is "mental health"-or to the interaction of those two aspirational, one might say euphemistically-named social systems: the mental health and justice systems? This question centres upon the rule of law-specifically, I suggest (as I relate further in closing), a thick conception of the rule of law grounded in an ideal of state-subject reciprocity-and not, or not directly, upon the individual and social good ofhealth. It is this overarching question that I wish to pursue in setting the stage for the two lectures …

The literature of the U.S. South has found new life in the burgeoning field of inter-American literary studies. Both the U.S. South's literatures and its histories have played key roles in the academic attempt to connect the literatures and histories of the United States to those of Latin America and the Caribbean from the groundbreaking work of Bell Gale Chevigny and Gari Laguardia's 1986 collection, Reinventing the Americas: Comparative Studies of Literature of the United States and Spanish America, through Gustavo Pérez Firmat's "invitation or come-on" to study American literatures side by side in his 1990 edited volume, Do the …

Periodontitis, a chronic inflammatory disease of the tissues supporting the teeth, is characterized by an exaggerated host immune and inflammatory response to periopathogenic bacteria. Toll-like receptor activation, cytokine network induction, and accumulation of neutrophils at the site of inflammation are important in the host defense against infection. At the same time, induction of immune tolerance and the clearance of neutrophils from the site of infection are essential in the control of the immune response, resolution of inflammation, and prevention of tissue destruction. Using a human monocytic cell line, we demonstrate that Porphyromonas gingivalis lipopolysaccharide (LPS), which is a major etiological …

Growth Of Lactic Acid Bacteria: Influence Of Protocooperation, Bacteriophage Infection, And Prebiotic Carbohydrates, Caitlin D. Goin
School of Biological Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Lactic acid bacteria are a vital part of the fermented food industry and are the subject of much interest and research. Industry is especially interested in using modern molecular approaches to maintain and improve selected strains; several industrial uses could be improved by closer investigation, namely the protocooperation of S. thermophilus and L. bulgaricus, the role of CRISPRs in phage resistance, and the utilization of prebiotic carbohydrates. Questions such as what genes and pathways are shared during milk fermentation between S. thermophilus and L. bulgaricus, when and what genes are active during bacteriophage infection, and how and where …

The Waterfalls Of Kauai, Hawaii, Darryll T. Pederson
The Waterfalls Of Kauai, Hawaii, Darryll T. Pederson
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
Everyone enjoys the sounds and sights of a tropical waterfall. They are the setting for romantic and action packed movies. Fantasy Island used Wailua Falls on Kauai to open their weekly TV series. From a different viewpoint waterfall origin and evolution has been attributed to a wide range of geologic processes. The Hawaiian Island's waterfalls and amphitheater-headed valleys have been cited by many as equivalent to similar features seen on Mars. After a number of years of studying these features on Kauai, I offer the following thoughts and observations about Kauai's waterfalls and amphitheater-headed valleys.

The Integration Of Nearthreshold And Subthreshold Cmos Logic For Energy Minimization, John Hicks
The Integration Of Nearthreshold And Subthreshold Cmos Logic For Energy Minimization, John Hicks
Theses
With the rapid growth in the use of portable electronic devices, more emphasis has recently been placed on low-energy circuit design. Digital subthreshold complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) circuit design is one area of study that offers significant energy reduction by operating at a supply voltage substantially lower than the threshold voltage of the transistor. However, these energy savings come at a critical cost to performance, restricting its use to severely energy-constrained applications such as microsensor nodes. In an effort to mitigate this performance degradation in low-energy designs, nearthreshold circuit design has been proposed and implemented in digital circuits such as Intel's …
The Image – By Any Means, Richard Minard
The Image – By Any Means, Richard Minard
Theses
Art is inherently a reflection of the human condition. As I am working, my intention is to make images that, at the very least, capture the audience's attention. By adding layers and fracturing the images, I want the audience to see through various visual relationships. These visual relationships can be interpreted as a metaphor of the often hectic and unstable qualities of daily life. As the human figure is my connection to the work, it also serves as the viewer's connection. The blending of media and mixing up of figurative representation with abstraction is my attempt to challenge the viewer …
The Internal Expression Of The Phenomenon Of Human Aspiration, Eunsuh Choi
The Internal Expression Of The Phenomenon Of Human Aspiration, Eunsuh Choi
Theses
My thesis investigates the phenomenon of human aspiration in life and was conceived from the new perspective I have about myself and my pursuits in a foreign country. Originally from Korea, I relocated to the United States and during this time asked myself many questions to determine my goal. When I was young, adults would ask me about my future even though I was not yet old enough to think logically about such questions. "What do you want to be?" they would ask. "What is next?" These are common questions in my country. I assume there are many different reasons …
Development Of Sustainability Indicators For Products And Processes, Sundeep Bodapati
Development Of Sustainability Indicators For Products And Processes, Sundeep Bodapati
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Significant increase in industrialization is a leading cause for the depletion of global resources and changes in the earth's atmosphere due to global warming. There has been a major concern for the manufacturing industry to deal with the above problems and this had led the researchers to focus on the area of sustainability. Sustainable development aims for the future, which is characterized by the interaction of the economic, environment and society. To enable the manufacturing companies to measure sustainability performance, developing the metrics for sustainability is critical. The purpose of this thesis is to review the indicators published in the …
A Phenomenological Study Of Children's Experiences While Families Receive Services From A Homeless Agency, Sonya Lorelle
A Phenomenological Study Of Children's Experiences While Families Receive Services From A Homeless Agency, Sonya Lorelle
Counseling & Human Services Theses & Dissertations
Children who experience homelessness have an increased risk for negative outcomes in several developmental areas (Bucker, 2008). While there are numerous programs that hope to mediate these and other risks by offering services to families experiencing homelessness, there is a paucity of research that addresses how children's psychosocial needs are being addressed in existing programs (Gewirtz, Hart-Shegos, & Medhanie, 2008). In addition, there is also a lack of research which represents the children's and parents' perspectives and experiences in supportive housing programs, such as transitional and permanent supportive housing, or in-home case management programs. With this phenomenological qualitative study, I …

Electronic Image Stabilization Using Optical Flow With Inertial Fusion, Michael J. Smith, Alexander J. Boxerbaum, Gilbert L. Peterson, Roger D. Quinn
Faculty Publications
When a camera is affixed on a dynamic mobile robot, image stabilization is the first step towards more complex analysis on the video feed. This paper presents a novel electronic image stabilization (EIS) algorithm for highly dynamic mobile robotic platforms. The algorithm combines optical flow motion parameter estimation with angular rate data provided by a strapdown inertial measurement unit (IMU). A discrete Kalman filter in feedforward configuration is used for optimal fusion of the two data sources. Performance evaluations are conducted using a simulated video truth model (capturing the effects of image translation, rotation, blurring, and moving objects), and live …

Synthesis And Characterization Of An Europium-Porphyrin Complex, Alejandro Blinder
All Capstone Projects
Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a promising treatment that has continued to improve over the past thirty years when the first commercially approved photosensitizer (PS) was introduced. Although PDT has many successful applications, the terrifying number of new cancer cases reported each year makes scientists focus their efforts towards the development of new efficient PS for PDT. The biggest obstacle that prohibits PDT from becoming a more widely used therapy is the ineffective photosensitizers (PS) that are available on the market today. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the synthesized metal-porphyrin complex as a possible candidate as a PS. …
Model Citizen: Exploring The Portrayal Of Unconventional Models On Television Shows In Relation To Women's Self Image, Nicole Jenelle James
Model Citizen: Exploring The Portrayal Of Unconventional Models On Television Shows In Relation To Women's Self Image, Nicole Jenelle James
All Capstone Projects
According to the renowned Mayo Clinic, having a low self-image can lead people to suffer harmful: physical, emotional, and behavioral consequences. Much of women’s selfimage is reliant on comparing themselves to the media’s perception of beauty. In an effort to bolster American women’s self-esteem, a workshop is proposed to explore the relation between portrayal of unconventional models on television shows and women’s/viewer’s self-image.
