Non-Contrast Mri May Predict Safety Of Gadolinium-Enhanced Mri In Patients With Cirrhosis, Jonathan M. Fenkel, Md, Colin L. Smith, Md, Leela Nayak, Md, Steven K. Herrine, Md, Donald G. Mitchell, Md

Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology Faculty Papers

Background:

Hepatorenal syndrome (HRS) is a relative contraindication to receiving gadolinium-based contrast media secondary to risk of nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (NSF)

Patients with cirrhosis frequently undergo magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for hepatocellular cancer screening and liver transplant evaluation.

Most centers require documented serum creatinine levels within 10-14 days of performing MRIs on patients with cirrhosis.

Ascites can be readily detected on MRI without contrast enhancement.

Objective:

To determine whether the presence of ascites on MRI can be used to recommend against a diagnosis of HRS without knowledge of a serum creatinine level.

Social and Cultural Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

This article examines how frames and moral panics are used to attract attention to public health issues. This research posits that once a health social movement organization frames their contested issue as a social problem, a moral panic is created to initiate a reaction on the part of the movement's target audience. A case study of the development of The Balm in Gilead, an AIDS awareness program that targets the Black Church, is used to illustrate how frames and moral panics are employed. Data consists of interviews with Black Church leaders, AIDS activists, and employees at The Balm in Gilead …

Faculty Publications

The web is a potentially powerful tool for communicating information to diverse audiences. Unfortunately, all groups are not equally represented on the web, and this may have implications for online information seeking. This study investigated the role of class- and ethnic-based identity in self-perceived web-based information seeking/finding and self-efficacy. A questionnaire is administered, asking African Americans about their class and ethnic identities and web use to test a conceptual model predicting that these identities are positively related to web-based information seeking and web self-efficacy, which are then positively related to web-based information finding. Gender and previous web experience are expected …

Private Contractors In Conflict Zones: The Good, The Bad, And The Strategic Impact, T.X. Hammes

In Iraq and Afghanistan, the use of contractors reached a level unprecedented in U.S. military operations. As of March 31, 2010, the United States deployed 175,000 troops and 207,000 contractors in the war zones. Contractors represented 50 percent of the Department of Defense (DOD) workforce in Iraq and 59 percent in Afghanistan. These numbers include both armed and unarmed contractors. Thus, for the purposes of this paper, the term contractor includes both armed and unarmed personnel unless otherwise specified. The presence of contractors on the battlefield is obviously not a new phenomenon but has dramatically increased from the ratio of …
