"A Repeating World": Redeeming The Past And Future In The Utopian Dystopia Of Jeanette Winterson's The Stone Gods, Hope Jennings
English Language and Literatures Faculty Publications
The article examines how Jeanette Winterson's book The Stone Gods follows a spatio-temporal alternative to the pattern of dystopian apocalypse and the utopian breach from history. It notes that such alternative showed Winterson's objective to tear down repressive ideologies through articulated narratives that no longer enact similar self-destructive cycles. It also points that the book is a pertinent illustration of a feminist critical dystopia.

Technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPCK or TPACK) – the highly practical professional educational knowledge that enables and supports technology integration – is comprised of teachers’ concurrent and interdependent knowledge of curriculum content, general pedagogy, and technological understanding. Teachers’ planning – which expresses teachers’ professional knowledge (including TPACK) in pragmatic ways -- is situated, contextually sensitive, routinized, and activity-based. To assist with technology integration, therefore, we suggest using what is understood from research about teachers’ knowledge and instructional planning to form an approach to curriculum-based technology integration that is predicated upon teachers combining technologically supported learning activity types selected from content-keyed …

Final Report: Anchorage Disproportionate Minority Contact Study, André B. Rosay, Ronald S. Everett, William Hurr
Reports
This project examined disproportionate minority contact in Anchorage, Alaska. It was designed to provide a more nuanced understanding of disproportionate minority contact at the referral stage (when law enforcement officers refer youth to the Alaska Division of Juvenile Justice). To do so, we relied on community involvement and utilized different statistical techniques to examine the geography and development of disproportionate minority contact. Researchers partnered with practitioners from the Anchorage Disproportionate Minority Contact Initiative to structure the research process and to interpret and disseminate results. Geographic analyses were conducted to examine where the highest levels of disproportionate minority contact were occurring …

Brave New Eugenics: Regulating Assisted Reproductive Technologies In The Name Of Better Babies, Kerry L. Macintosh
Brave New Eugenics: Regulating Assisted Reproductive Technologies In The Name Of Better Babies, Kerry L. Macintosh
Faculty Publications
Infertile men and women have been using assisted reproductive technologies (ART) to conceive children since the first "test-tube baby" was born in 1978. During the past decade, however, the federal government has begun to clamp down on ART, asserting safety concerns as grounds forbanning novel technologies such as cloning, nuclear transfer, and ooplasm transfer.
Some scholars and policymakers now want to extend governmental regulation to include conventional ART such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). They claim children conceived through ART face an increased risk of birth defects and other health problems.
This Article examines the …

Community Leaders' Knowledge And Perceptions About Obesity: Implications For Outreach Educators In Designing Interventions, Norma L. Dawkins, Tryan Mcmickens, Henry J. Findlay, Ralphenia D. Pace
Journal of Extension
The study reported here examined the knowledge and perceptions of community leaders on overweight and obesity in two racially different counties. Data were collected from 126 individuals, including clergy, physicians, grocery store managers, school administrators, nurses, nutritionists, and university faculty and staff. Statistically significant differences were observed when community leaders were grouped according to race. Additionally, over 90% of community leaders were knowledgeable about obesity. Leaders associated obesity with high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart disease. This article provides insights that can be useful for planning and implementing programs on obesity prevention and reduction.

"The purpose of this research was to examine syllabi collected from four-year, University Aviation Association (UAA) member schools that offer Title 14 of the CFR Part 141 approved instrument pilot instruction through content analysis. These documents were examined for elements deemed essential by the research literature. This investigation sought to identify the inclusion of course descriptions, learning objectives, the coverage of topics required by regulation, the textbooks and other materials used, course assignments, evaluative tools (e.g. tests, quizzes, papers), instructional methods utilized, statements concerning class policies, and statements of academic integrity. Also, this study sought to determine if instrument pilot …

Human mobility has existed in countless forms for many centuries. Yet in our modern world of sovereign territorially defined nation-states, both policy makers and national publics increasingly see human mobility across national boundaries as alarming. The rising movement of people, culture and capital across borders is suggested to pose a direct challenge to the nation-state as the organizing unit around which many areas of human activity revolve. In the age of globalization, academics and politicans are investigating how to understand the question of individuals and entire communities, intent on maintaining strong economic, cultural and social ties across state borders. This …

The Migrant Homemaker: Historicizing Gender Between Nations In Yamina Benguigui’S Inch’Allah Dimanche, Olivia Donaldson
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
This article examines Yamina Benguigui’s film Inch’Allah dimanche (2001) to probe questions of gender and nation in the context of transnational migration. An analysis of the historical drama, which recounts an Algerian family’s reunion in France during the 1970s, reveals how the migrant homemaker must negotiate her symbolic role as “bearer of the nation” in relationship to not one but two nations: the homeland left behind and the new homeland. This filmic study of “gender between nations” proposes the benefits of transnational studies that literally “move beyond the borders of the nation” to consider the frontiers of the body. A …

Irresolute Intermediaries: Television, Memory, And Weird Frontiers, David Lewkowich
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
The task of narrating our memories is a difficult and virtually impossible undertaking, especially since it is often those moments we cannot recall that, in the end, may prove be the most formative. In this paper, I look at what it means to narrativize reminiscences of the televisual viewing experience, as banal encounters that nevertheless shed light on the fragmented nature of our relations in the social world. Despite the ubiquitous presence of television in our everyday lives, its worth is rarely interrogated at the level of the writer/researcher’s subject and of memory. This piece looks not at the substance …
Evolution, Popular Culture, And The Nature Of Scientific Knowledge, James Clinton
Evolution, Popular Culture, And The Nature Of Scientific Knowledge, James Clinton
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
This article presents a view of science that counters the teleological and authoritative way in which it is presented in arenas of popular discourse ranging from public schools, science magazines (such as Wired), community meetings, and popular books written by scientists. Noting the strange conflation of “evolution” (a branch of science) and “science” (as a way of thinking), the essay presents psychoanalytic and scientific arguments that suggest that evolution is equated with science in the public because evolution represents the return of the repressed element that founds any discourse which seeks to remain self contained. In science, this repressed …

Whose America Is This, Anyway?: Class, Identity, And The Critical Voice In Cultural Texts, Mike S. Dubose
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
This article, by exploring an interesting and noteworthy event (a 1989 clash over identity and accusations of racism between Living Colour and Guns N’ Roses) which spanned multiple venues (from radio to magazines to the concert stage, when both bands opened up for the Rolling Stones), challenges the way scholars read and use cultural artifacts as texts, thereby creating an artificial hierarchy between "the interpreted" and those who possess "the right to interpret.

[First paragraph]
While war and conflict have always been present to some extent throughout history, since the September 11, 2001 attacks in America there has been a rise in overseas conflict and troop deployments under the banner of ‘The Global War on Terror’. For the Australian public, these conflicts take place overseas in the far reaches of the Middle East, a place to which few have first hand contact, leaving them reliant on the media establishment to inform them of events (Taylor 63). Questions however have been raised about the current forms of wartime journalism, with many in the industry …

Will Individuals Aboard The Cultural Pirate Ship Be Struck By The Acta's Cannon Ball?, Shalom Andrews
Joint PIJIP/TLS Research Paper Series
Combating internet piracy is a global challenge. Fundamentally, piracy lingers because it has become a culturally acceptable behaviour that is under-enforced. The Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) is the latest enforcement measure aimed at sinking the pirate ship.
The first part of this paper will explore piracy as a cultural phenomenon and how it interacts with Australian civil and criminal law. Pirates, who have awareness that their plundering is wrong, convince themselves that: there are moral grounds for their escapades; there is a government conspiracy to reduce internet freedom; they are fighting globalisation by attacking the corporations who reap disproportionate booty, …

Me And Betty Crocker, Or, From Waspy White To Mestiza: 75 Years Of General Mills, Linda Heidenreich
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
[First paragraph]
In the late twentieth-century, General Mills, one of the largest producers of baking products in the U.S., changed the image of one of its marketing icons; that icon was Betty Crocker. For almost a century, the company had used the image to promote their baking products and cookbooks. The image, from its inception had been of a white woman, sometimes older, sometimes younger, but always WASPy white. In 1995 this image changed, and General Mills proposed a new Betty, a multi-cultural Betty, to appeal to an increasingly multi-cultural U.S. market (“General Mills Inc. to Create” E3; “General Mills …
