The Terrorist Informant, Wadie E. Said
The Terrorist Informant, Wadie E. Said
Washington Law Review
A man sets himself on fire in front of the White House in a dispute with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). He has been working as an informant for the FBI in a high-profile terrorism prosecution and is unhappy with the $100,000 he has been paid so far. He has also been recently convicted of bank fraud. As a result, the government declines to call him as a witness, given the damage his actions have on his credibility and trustworthiness. This incident underscores the difficulty inherent in relying on paid informants to drive a prosecution, where material considerations such …

Act 6: A Sixth Sense?, James Smith Allen
Act 6: A Sixth Sense?, James Smith Allen
A Privileged Past
The last act of "A Privileged Past" is devoted to the author’s life and work in higher education at Southern Illinois University Carbondale and its ecological niche on the northern-most edge of the Shawnee National Forest. The faculty member’s teaching, research, and service are described and set within the context of an evolving academic community and its relationship to a larger environment. Given the limitations of empirical knowledge, the chapter’s chief metaphor is a sixth sense of what is right and of use to others, students especially, who are intent upon a better life for themselves.
Design And Implementation Of User Level Socket Application Programming Interface With Socket Splitting And Mediation, Scott Walter Holzer
Design And Implementation Of User Level Socket Application Programming Interface With Socket Splitting And Mediation, Scott Walter Holzer
Master's Theses
Over the past few decades, the size and scope of the Internet has grown exponentially. In order to maintain support for legacy clients, new applications and services have been limited by dependence on traditional sockets and TCP, which provide no support for modifying endpoints after connection setup. This forces applications to implement their own logic to reroute communications to take advantage of composable services or handle failover. Some solutions have added socket operations that allow for endpoints to be redirected on the fly, but these have been limited in scope to handling failover and load balancing.
We present two new …

A Competency Model For Video Relay Service Interpreters, Norma Oldfield
A Competency Model For Video Relay Service Interpreters, Norma Oldfield
International Journal of Interpreter Education
The development of Video Relay Services (VRS) has resulted in a new specialization in the field of sign language interpreting. However, the supply of highly skilled practitioners falls short of the increasing demand. Though interpreters are being placed in VRS call centers, there is no standardized model by which to measure VRS interpreter performance. This study uses a classic competency model design to guide the development of a competency model that identifies and describes sign language video interpreter competencies related to VRS work. A VRS competency dictionary and rating tool were created and used to measure current practitioners, and both …

International Development Of Interpreter Specialization: Assumptions And Principles For Interpreter Educators, Anna Witter- Merithew, Brenda S. Nicodemus
International Journal of Interpreter Education
Specialization of interpreting practice exists in the field of interpreting and interpreter education through de facto and de jure processes. Interpreters are de facto specialists when they self-designate as having specialized competence for working in a particular setting, with certain populations, or within unique functions. Conversely, interpreters may be designated as specialists through external (de jure) processes such as adhering to national standards, completing advanced educational programming in specialty areas, and achieving specialty certification. There are a variety of factors that have shaped the evolution of specialization in the United States—several of which have application to the specialization of practice …
Struggling Between Aspirations To Innovate And The Tyranny Of Reality, Yong Zhong
Struggling Between Aspirations To Innovate And The Tyranny Of Reality, Yong Zhong
International Journal of Interpreter Education
In this paper, I reflect on over twenty years of teaching interpreting, evolving from a “listen and interpret” teacher to an aspirant for innovation. There are discussions of how I broke out of the comfort zone of notions of “accuracy” and “correct interpretation,” but the focus of the paper is on how a broadened vision enabled me to formulate my own teaching philosophies and on how I am teaching interpreting in an evolved regime. I will also discuss the outcomes of the innovations. As will be shown, there are positive outcomes for the students, the innovator, and the university. But …
Introducing Transliteracy: What Does It Mean To Academic Libraries?, Thomas A. Ipri
Introducing Transliteracy: What Does It Mean To Academic Libraries?, Thomas A. Ipri
Library Faculty Research
Transliteracy is recent terminology gaining currency in the library world. It is a broad term encompassing and transcending many existing concepts. Because transliteracy is not a library-centric concept, many in the profession are unsure what the term means and how it relates to libraries’ instructional mission and to other existing ideas about various literacies. Transliteracy is such a new concept that its working definition is still evolving and many of its tenets can easily be misinterpreted. Although this term is in flux, academic librarians should watch developments in this new field to continually assess and understand what impact it may …

Jefferson Institute of Molecular Medicine Papers and Presentations
OBJECTIVE: Nephrogenic systemic fibrosis (NSF) is a generalised fibrotic disorder occurring in certain individuals with renal insufficiency exposed to gadolinium-based contrast agents (GdBCA) for MRI. Histopathological examination of affected tissues shows increased numbers of activated macrophages. To elucidate the mechanisms responsible for macrophage activation, the effects of the GdBCA Omniscan on normal human macrophage global gene expression, chemokine production and nuclear factor κB (NFκB) activation was examined.
METHODS: Normal human monocyte-derived macrophages were incubated with Omniscan (50 mM) and their gene expression analysed by microarrays and real-time PCR. Macrophage chemokine production was assayed by multiplex ELISA. NFκB activation was assessed …

Extending The Rit-Dupont Suprathreshold Data Set: Weighted Individual Discrimination Pair Data And New Chroma Dependency Visual Data, Bingxin Hou
Theses
Since the 1980's, the RIT-DuPont dataset has been used extensively for color-difference formula development and testing. In the past, the dataset was published as 156 color median tolerances along specific vector directions about 19 color centers. The median tolerance, referred to as T50, is the estimated absolute magnitude of the color difference at which 50% of the population will accept or reject a pair relative to an anchor pair. 1D Probit analysis, a univariate statistical technique that locates a median threshold from a binary response data, was used to transform judgments of 958 color-difference pairs by 50 observers to 156 …

A Pragmatic Assessment Of Government Support For Organic Agriculture In Ireland, Leslie Duram
A Pragmatic Assessment Of Government Support For Organic Agriculture In Ireland, Leslie Duram
Publications
Drawing on a pragmatic approach, this paper provides an analysis of governmental support for organic farming in Ireland. There are varying levels of encouragement and programmes provided to farmers in their conversion from conventional to organic production, and in their maintenance of organic production. Support policies vary across regions and are linked to European Union legislation, thus it is challenging to document the many types of support in place. This research investigates relevant technical, financial, and policy support available to organic farmers in Ireland. This exploratory study develops an assessment of Ireland within eight key categories of organic agricultural support: …

Octomom And Multi-Fetal Pregnancies: Why Federal Legislation Should Require Insurers To Cover In Vitro Fertilization, Camille M. Davidson
William & Mary Journal of Race, Gender, and Social Justice
This article examines the public health, legal, and policy implications of multi-fetal pregnancies resulting from in vitro fertilization (IVF), using the 2009 “Octomom” case as a catalyst for discussion. Camille M. Davidson argues that the high rate of multi-fetal pregnancies in the United States is a direct consequence of the unregulated fertility industry, the financial burden of IVF on patients, and the incentive structures created by the Fertility Clinic Success Rate and Certification Act. She contends that lack of mandated insurance coverage compels patients and physicians to transfer multiple embryos per cycle to maximize pregnancy chances, increasing the risks of …
