Prelude, James Smith Allen Nov 2010

Prelude, James Smith Allen

A Privileged Past

Yes, "A Privileged Past" is an autobiography – and something more. Structured like a comic opera to evoke the sensuous sources of personal recollection, this book explores the interrelations of public and private memory.

Its narrative is based on the author’s experiences, of course, but also on those of his forebears and their descendants, set in six historical contexts: immigration, social mobility, cultural capital, individual agency, national identity, and public education. These circumstances have driven all Americans’ faith in self, family, and better times, perhaps as early as the arrival of European settlers in the 1600s.

Drawing on documentation such …

Migration And Transculturation In The Digital Age: A Framework For Studying The “Space Between”, Padmini Banerjee Ph.D., Myna German Ph.D. Nov 2010

Migration And Transculturation In The Digital Age: A Framework For Studying The “Space Between”, Padmini Banerjee Ph.D., Myna German Ph.D.

Journal of International and Global Studies

Transnational immigrants today appear to live dual or even multiple lives across national borders, with help from a range of new technologies involving media and channels of communication such as Internet-based chat or telephony, mobile phones, and interactive online social networks. The authors explore the implications of accumulated findings on this aspect for researchers and scholars investigating the contemporary experience of global migration in relation to diasporas and their technology-enabled interconnections with home and host societies. Against the context of existing conceptual frameworks, the utility of the multi-dimensional construct of transculturalism (Ortiz, 1995 [1940]), involving the three processes of acculturation, …

On The Cusp Of Water War: A Diagnostic Account Of The Volatile Geopolitics Of The Middle East, Ahmed Abukhater Nov 2010

On The Cusp Of Water War: A Diagnostic Account Of The Volatile Geopolitics Of The Middle East, Ahmed Abukhater

Peace and Conflict Studies

This paper provides a diagnostic account of the nature and severity of the trans-boundary water resources conflict in the Middle East and how it is intertwined with issues of high politics. The concepts and analytical framework provided in this paper represent universal principles that, while applying to the Middle East water conflict, are also reflective of and applicable to many other disputes over natural resources around the world. This aspect about the research is particularly of great interest to the quest and scope of many other researches, considering the Palestinian-Israeli conflict is regarded as the sine qua non from which …

Re-Seeing The Mighty: Critically Examining One Film's Representations Of Disability In The English Classroom, Joellen Maples, Katrina Arndt, Julia M. White Nov 2010

Re-Seeing The Mighty: Critically Examining One Film's Representations Of Disability In The English Classroom, Joellen Maples, Katrina Arndt, Julia M. White

Education Faculty/Staff Publications

Films portraying characters with disabilities are often shown in the English classroom. Films such as "Of Mice and Men," "Simon Birch," "To Kill a Mockingbird," "The Hunchback of Notre Dame," "The Glass Menagerie," "Moby Dick," "Gattaca," and "A Beautiful Mind" often show simplistic and stereotypical representations of characters and their disabilities. Although students are frequently encouraged to think critically about a film's structure, themes, or symbolic elements, the authors argue that they should also learn to examine critically the representations of disability in these films. If stereotypical representations of characters with disabilities are not identified and challenged, another generation of …

The “Public” In “Public Peace Process” And In “Mini-Publics:” A Dialogue Between Democratic Theory And Peace Studies, Amit Ron Nov 2010

The “Public” In “Public Peace Process” And In “Mini-Publics:” A Dialogue Between Democratic Theory And Peace Studies, Amit Ron

Peace and Conflict Studies

The recent attention of peace studies scholars to the role of the "public" parallels an increased interest of democratic theorists in the legitimacy of "mini-publics:" initiatives that bring small groups of citizens together to discuss policy issues. In fact, democratic activists and peace activists who seek to engage the public face similar theoretical and practical challenges. The purpose of this article is to contribute to an emerging dialogue between the disciplines of democratic theory and peace studies. Such a dialogue can be beneficial in at least two ways: it allows an exploration of the role of legitimacy in public peace …

One New President, One New Patriarch And A Generous Disregard For The Constitution: A Recipe For The Continuing Decline Of Secular Russia, Robert C. Blitt Nov 2010

One New President, One New Patriarch And A Generous Disregard For The Constitution: A Recipe For The Continuing Decline Of Secular Russia, Robert C. Blitt

Scholarly Works

The government of Russia and the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC) - the country’s predominant religious group - recently underwent back-to-back changes in each institution’s respective leadership. This coincidence of timing affords a unique opportunity to reassess the status of constitutional secularism and church–state relations in the Russian Federation.

Following a discussion of the presidential and patriarchal elections that occurred between March 2008 and January 2009, the Article surveys recent developments in Russia as they relate to the nation’s constitutional obligations. In the face of this analysis, the Article argues that the government and the ROC alike continue to willfully undermine …

Our Health Matters: Promoting The Health Of Sexual Minority Women In The New Media Landscape, Brenda Kane Nov 2010

Our Health Matters: Promoting The Health Of Sexual Minority Women In The New Media Landscape, Brenda Kane

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The shifts occurring in the mediascape and the field of public health offer new opportunities for promoting the health and wellness of sexual minority women. As a population that has historically been underserved by the healthcare system, sexual minority women face multiple barriers to achieving positive health outcomes. They are often less likely to access preventive healthcare services and more likely to engage in risky behaviors that are detrimental to health than heterosexual women. Despite the significant health disparities among sexual minority women, studying this population has not been a priority in health research and there is little research-based evidence …

Letters Of Intent, Costly Signals, And Local Peacemaking In The Georgian-Abkhaz Conflict, Spencer B. Meredith Iii Nov 2010

Letters Of Intent, Costly Signals, And Local Peacemaking In The Georgian-Abkhaz Conflict, Spencer B. Meredith Iii

Peace and Conflict Studies

A state of near-war lasted for almost two decades between Georgia and the separatist region of Abkhazia. Localized violence plagued neighboring communities while United Nations agencies, humanitarian groups, and religious organizations worked with both sides to resolve the conflict’s underlying causes. Unfortunately, those diverse and long-standing efforts proved fruitless when the parties went to war in August 2008. This article examines the reasons for the conflict’s enduring nature and presents an example of grassroots peacemaking completed by university students focused on the plight of Georgia’s domestic refugees. An in-depth case study reveals the impact of their unilateral peacemaking efforts to …

Discovery And Analysis Of 4h-Pyridopyrimidines, A Class Of Selective Bacterial Protein Synthesis Inhibitors, Wendy Ribble, Walter E. Hill, Urs A. Ochsner, Thale C. Jarvis, Joseph W. Guiles, Nebojsa Janjic, James M. Bullard Nov 2010

Discovery And Analysis Of 4h-Pyridopyrimidines, A Class Of Selective Bacterial Protein Synthesis Inhibitors, Wendy Ribble, Walter E. Hill, Urs A. Ochsner, Thale C. Jarvis, Joseph W. Guiles, Nebojsa Janjic, James M. Bullard

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Bacterial protein synthesis is the target for numerous natural and synthetic antibacterial agents. We have developed a poly(U) mRNA-directed aminoacylation/translation protein synthesis system composed of phenyl-tRNA synthetases, ribosomes, and ribosomal factors from Escherichia coli. This system, utilizing purified components, has been used for high-throughput screening of a small-molecule chemical library. We have identified a series of compounds that inhibit protein synthesis with 50% inhibitory concentrations (IC(50)s) ranging from 3 to 14 mu M. This series of compounds all contained the same central scaffold composed of tetrahydropyrido[4,3-d] pyrimidin-4-ol (e.g., 4H-pyridopyrimidine). All analogs contained an ortho pyridine ring attached to the central …

Faculty Book Display Case

Reversing Field invites students, professionals, and enthusiasts of sport – whether law, management and marketing, or the game itself – to explore the legal issues and regulations surrounding collegiate and professional athletics in the United States. This theoretical and methodological interrogation of sports law openly addresses race, labor, gender, and the commercialization of sports, while offering solutions to the disruptions that threaten its very foundation during an era of increased media scrutiny and consumerism. In over thirty chapters, academics, practitioners, and critics vigorously confront and debate matters such as the Arms Race, gender bias, racism, the Rooney Rule, and steroid …

Tweeting The Dalai Lama, Are Cell Phones Becoming The New Vajras?, Ronald S. Green

Philosophy and Religious Studies

On February 22, 2010 the Office of the 14th Dalai Lama joined the online microblogging site Twitter. Twitter is an internet based community, ranked the world’s third most used online social network by Compete.com. Members post messages called “tweets” that are displayed on to their profile pages and delivered to their subscribers, known as followers. The Dalai Lama reportedly joined Twitter after meeting the site’s founder, Evan Williams, although Mr. Williams posted on his own Twitter page that the Dalai Lama had laughed when he suggested the idea to him.1 However, the account may have been set up one week …

Tremblings

Aspen (Populus tremuloides) and biodiversity

Robert L. Beschta

Many years ago, as an undergraduate, I took a range course in which the concept of “increaser” and “decreaser” plants was presented. That is, on sites where significant herbivory by large mammals occurs, either from livestock or high densities of wild ungulates, plants that are more palatable or less tolerant of herbivory tend to decrease over time. Whereas other plants may increase if, for example, they are relatively unpalatable, have features that allow a plant to resist herbivory (e.g., thorns), or are simply capable of establishing, growing, and reproducing in …

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

In this paper, a personal micronavigation system that uses high-resolution gait-corrected inertial measurement units is presented. The goal of this paper is to develop a navigation system that uses secondary inertial variables, such as velocity, to enable long-term precise navigation in the absence of Global Positioning System (GPS) and beacon signals. In this scheme, measured zerovelocity duration from the ground reaction sensors is used to reset the accumulated integration errors from accelerometers and gyroscopes in position calculation. With the described system, an average position error of 4 m is achieved at the end of half-hour walks.

Constitutional Interpretation Through A Global Lens, Rex D. Glensy Nov 2010

Constitutional Interpretation Through A Global Lens, Rex D. Glensy

Missouri Law Review

This Article seeks to clarify the current debate concerning the use of non-U.S. persuasive authority within the context of constitutional interpretation. It begins by noting that commentary on comparative constitutional law often fails to make any distinction between foreign domestic sources and international law used comparatively, and thus risks evoking parallels between different systems of law that lack context and plausibility. It then draws on various normative theories and underpinnings of both domestic and international legal regimes to show that a proper comparative enterprise must take this distinction into account. The Article concludes by explaining that only when those policy …

Autonomous Underwater Vehicles As Tools For Deep-Submergence Archaeology, Christopher N. Roman, Ian Roderick Mather Nov 2010

Autonomous Underwater Vehicles As Tools For Deep-Submergence Archaeology, Christopher N. Roman, Ian Roderick Mather

Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications

Marine archaeology beyond the capabilities of scuba divers is a technologically enabled field. The tool suite includes ship-based systems such as towed side-scan sonars and remotely operated vehicles, and more recently free-swimming autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). Each of these platforms has various imaging and mapping capabilities appropriate for specific scales and tasks. Broadly speaking, AUVs are becoming effective tools for locating, identifying, and surveying archaeological sites. This paper discusses the role of AUVs in this suite of tools, outlines some specific design criteria necessary to maximize their utility in the field, and presents directions for future developments. Results are presented …
