Mig-6 And Its Role In Regulating Adult Lung Epithelium, Sandra Bennett Jan 2010

Mig-6 And Its Role In Regulating Adult Lung Epithelium, Sandra Bennett

Masters

Through the use of developmental and knock out studies Mig-6 has been shown to have a role in development. It has also been shown to be a tumour suppressor gene. Little work has been done as yet looking at its role in the adult. This study examined the role of Mig-6 in the lung with the ultimate goal being to determine if the pulmonary phenotype due to Mig-6 ablation is due to a developmental programming or loss of function in the adult. This was investigated in two ways. 1. To investigate if knocking out Mig-6 in adult lung has an …

To evaluate the effective components of couple relationship education, 59 newlywed couples were randomly assigned to one of two couple relationship programs (CRE): (1) RELATE, which involved receiving feedback mono their relationship based on the on-line RELATE assessment; or (2) RELATE + Couple CARE, which was RELATE plus completing the 6 unit Couple CARE relationship skill training program. Relative to RELATE, RELATE + Couple CARE produced more improvement in couple communication, and high relationship satisfaction across the next 12 months in women. Men sustained high and similar relationship satisfaction in either condition. Skill training CRE has additional benefits for couples …

The New Abridged Reporter's Privilege: Policies, Principles, And Pathological Perspectives, Erik Ugland Jan 2010

The New Abridged Reporter's Privilege: Policies, Principles, And Pathological Perspectives, Erik Ugland

College of Communication Faculty Research and Publications

This Article contends that contemporary arguments about the reporter's privilege are increasingly situated within a divided framework in which protections for confidential and nonconfidential information are treated as separate interests that lack a shared theoretical justification. This is both a cause and consequence of a broader tendency among judges, legislators, journalists, and lawyers to emphasize policy-based conceptions of the privilege that are focused on case-specific calculations of harms and benefits, rather than principle-based conceptions focused on journalistic autonomy and the need for a structural separation of press and government. Policy arguments present the privilege as a narrow, utilitarian device for …

Modeling Permanent Deformation Of Unbound Granular Materials Under Repeated Loads, Cheng Chen, Louis Ge, Jiansheng Zhang Jan 2010

Modeling Permanent Deformation Of Unbound Granular Materials Under Repeated Loads, Cheng Chen, Louis Ge, Jiansheng Zhang

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Finite-element analysis on a pavement structure under traffic loads has been a viable option for researchers and designers in highway pavement design and analysis. Most of the constitutive drivers used were nonlinear elastic models defined by empirical resilient modulus equations. Few isotropic/kinematic hardening elastoplastic models were used but applying thousands of repeated load cycles became computationally expensive. in this paper, a cyclic plasticity model based on fuzzy plasticity theory is presented to model the long-term behavior of unbound granular materials under repeated loads. the discussion focuses on the model parameters that control long-term behavior such as elastic shakedown. the performance …

Performing Ethnographic Inquiry Into America's Black Youth Culture: The Impact Of Hip Hop And Rap Music On Today's Youth Society, Rose Cummings Spikes

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This is an ethnographic inquiry into America's black youth culture. It is an exploration of how the "hip hop culture" influences black youth culture. Drawing on the works of Rose (1994a, 1994b), Dimitriadis (2001), and Kitwana (2002), I explored impact of the hip hop culture in the areas of fashion, language and identity through the lens of young black males. To provide relevant theories for promoting higher academic achievement in African American males, I studied the works of Gay (2000), Ladson-Billings (2006, 2003, 2001, 1999), Weaver & Daspit (2003) and Watkins (2001). Sixth grade male students in a PreK-8 school, …

Evaluation Of Alternative Methods For Surface Preparation And Deposition Of Cerium-Based Conversion Coatings On Aluminum Alloys, William J. Gammill Jan 2010

Evaluation Of Alternative Methods For Surface Preparation And Deposition Of Cerium-Based Conversion Coatings On Aluminum Alloys, William J. Gammill

Masters Theses

"This thesis investigates alternative surface preparation and deposition methods for cerium-based conversion coatings (CeCC) on high strength aluminum alloys. Cerium-based conversion coatings are being investigated as a more environmentally friendly replacement for chromium-based conversion coatings. Currently, the alloys are immersed in strong alkaline and acidic solutions to prepare the aluminum surfaces for conversion coating, in which immersion may not be suitable for all situations. Alternatives to this method were investigated, including wipe application of solution, ultrasonic processing in deionized water, and abrasive blasting with alumina. AI 7075-T6 test panels were prepared using each of these methods and compared to a …

Microalgal Bioremediation Of Nutrients In Wastewater And Carbon Dioxide In Flue Gas, Anand Murali Narasimhan Jan 2010

Microalgal Bioremediation Of Nutrients In Wastewater And Carbon Dioxide In Flue Gas, Anand Murali Narasimhan

Masters Theses

"Microalgae are potential biofuel feedstocks that can provide solutions to the twin challenges of energy security and environmental pollution. They have great potential for the removal of excess nitrogen and phosphorus from wastewater including the farm runoff. They can capture carbon dioxide in the flue gas from coal fired power plants thereby reducing greenhouse gas and also producing algal biomass, which can be converted into biofuel. In this study, the nutrient consumption of Scenedesmus algae was investigated in a batch culture and the biomass yield was determined. Algae were able to utilize carbon in the form of soluble carbonates which …

Application Of Life Cycle Assessment To Estimate Environmental Impacts Of Surface Coal Mining, Ofentse Ditsele

Masters Theses

"Coal plays an important role in meeting the energy needs of the World. Given its abundance and low cost, its use is bound to increase with the growing energy demand. Despite its importance, there are concerns over coal's environmental burdens. In order to extract and use coal in a sustainable manner, sustainability assessment has to be comprehensive. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) provides systematic and quantifiable measures for assessing environmental burdens of products and processes. Extensive LCA work has been done on coal use, particularly in electricity generation, but, the coal mining stage has been neglected, for the most part. This …
