Investigating The Spectrum Of Biological Activity Of Ring-Substituted Salicylanilides And Carbamoylphenylcarbamates, Jiahui Guo, Aidan Coffey, Et. Al.
Department of Biological Sciences Publications
In this study, a series of twelve ring-substituted salicylanilides and carbamoylphenylcarbamates were prepared and characterized. The compounds were analyzed using RP-HPLC to determine lipophilicity. They were tested for their activity related to the inhibition of photosynthetic electron transport (PET) in spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.) chloroplasts. Moreover, their site of action in the photosynthetic apparatus was determined. Primary in vitro screening of the synthesized compounds was also performed against mycobacterial, bacterial and fungal strains. Several compounds showed biological activity comparable with or higher than the standards 3-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)-1,1-dimethylurea, isoniazid, penicillin G, ciprofloxacin or fluconazole. The most active compounds showed minimal anti-proliferative activity …

TITLE: Who wants yesterday's papers? The rise of independent online media
MAJOR PROFESSOR: William H. Freivogel
My research project focuses on the current financial and editorial health of the newspaper industry in the United States and the struggles newspapers are having in regards to profitability with their online operations. I have collected background information on independent and non-profit online journalism, the emergence of citizen journalism, and the redistribution of news via blogs …

BACKGROUND: Serum Amyloid A (SAA) is a major acute phase protein of unknown function. SAA is mostly expressed in the liver, but also in other tissues including the intestinal epithelium. SAA reportedly has anti-bacterial effects, and because inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) result from a breakdown in homeostatic interactions between intestinal epithelia and bacteria, we hypothesized that SAA is protective during experimental colitis.
METHODS: Intestinal SAA expression was measured in mouse and human samples. Dextran sodium sulfate (DSS) colitis was induced in SAA 1/2 double knockout (DKO) mice and in wildtype controls. Anti-bacterial effects of SAA1/2 were tested in intestinal epithelial …

Using Virtual Environments As Professional Development Tools For Pre-Service Teachers Seeking Esol Endorsement, Rebecca J. Blankenship
Using Virtual Environments As Professional Development Tools For Pre-Service Teachers Seeking Esol Endorsement, Rebecca J. Blankenship
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to investigate the potential use of Second Life (Linden Labs, 2004) and Skype (Skype Limited, 2009) as simulated virtual professional development tools for pre-service teachers seeking endorsement in teaching English as a Second Official Language (ESOL. Second Life is an avatar-based Internet program that allows end-users to interact, using audio and chat features, with a digital representation of themselves (an avatar). Skype is an Internet-based video conferencing program that allows users to see each other by way of a webcam. Of particular interest to this study was how a group of 12 pre-service teacher …
Evaluation Of Deep Geologic Units In Florida For Potential Use In Carbon Dioxide Sequestration, Tina Roberts-Ashby
Evaluation Of Deep Geologic Units In Florida For Potential Use In Carbon Dioxide Sequestration, Tina Roberts-Ashby
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Concerns about elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO
2
) and the effect on
global climate have created proposals for the reduction of carbon emissions from large
stationary sources, such as power plants. Carbon dioxide capture and sequestration
(CCS) in deep geologic units is being considered by Florida electric-utilities. Carbon
dioxide-enhanced oil recovery (CO
2
-EOR) is a form of CCS that could offset some of the
costs associated with geologic sequestration. Two potential reservoirs for geologic
sequestration were evaluated in south-central and southern Florida: the Paleocene
Cedar Keys Formation/Upper Cretaceous Lawson Formation (CKLIZ) and the Lower
Cretaceous Sunniland Formation along …
Utilization Of Simulation To Teach Pelvic Examination Skills To Medical Students: Implications For Medical Education, Brenda Seago
Utilization Of Simulation To Teach Pelvic Examination Skills To Medical Students: Implications For Medical Education, Brenda Seago
Theses and Dissertations
Medical education is changing. Physicians have less time for teaching clinical skills and for direct observation of medical students, due to sicker patients in the hospital, shorter hospital stays, competing demands of research and patient care, and implementation of the eighty hour work week for residents. The consumer movement increased awareness of medical errors, patient safety and quality of healthcare. Teaching the pelvic examination is ethically complex. Questions have arisen about medical students learning to conduct the pelvic examination on actual patients. This study utilizes the pelvic examination simulator and genital teaching associates (GTAs) to teach pelvic exam skills to …
