A Software Application For The Selection Of Temperature Measuring Sensors Using The Analytic Hierarchy Process (Ahp), Shadi Mohammad Al-B'Ool

Systems Science and Industrial Engineering Student Scholarship

This study presents a computer program that applies analytic hierarchy process (AHP) method to objectively select the best temperature sensors for various applications from multiple nominated alternatives. The underlying decision method based on AHP methodology, ranks temperature sensors with different features with a score resulting from the synthesis of relative preferences of each alternative to the others at different levels considering independent evaluation criteria. At each level, relative preferences of each candidate alternative with respect to the upper immediate level are calculated from pair-wise comparisons among the candidate alternative sensors based on the specifications of sensors with respect to a …

While many ExpertFinder applications succeed in finding experts, their techniques are not always designed to capture the various levels at which expertise can be expressed. Indeed, expertise can be inferred from relationships between topics and subtopics in a taxonomy. The conventional wisdom is that expertise in subtopics is also indicative of expertise in higher level topics as well. The enrichment of Expertise Profiles for finding experts can therefore be facilitated by taking domain hierarchies into account. We present a novel semantics-based model for finding experts, expertise levels and collaboration levels in a peer review context, such as composing a Program …

Against The Odds: Influences On The Post-School Success Of 'Low Performers', Sue Thomson, Kylie Hillman Sep 2010

Against The Odds: Influences On The Post-School Success Of 'Low Performers', Sue Thomson, Kylie Hillman

Vocational, adult and professional education research

The link between academic achievement and labour market outcomes is well established. But how well does a student's achievement in a test predict their later success in life? This study examines this question, with 'success' considered to encompass satisfaction with life together with the extent to which young people are fully occupied with education, employment or a combination of these. Low performers in mathematics in the 2003 Programme for International Student Assessment were the focus. The study found that 'low performing' status has little impact on future success. Further, students who saw the value of mathematics for their future success …

Probing The Evolving Massive Star Population In Orion With Kinematic And Radioactive Tracers, R. Voss, R. Diehl, J. S. Vink, Dieter H. Hartmann

Publications

Context. Orion is the nearest star-forming region to host a significant number of young and massive stars. The energy injected by these OB stars is thought to have created the Eridanus superbubble. Because of its proximity, Orion is a prime target for a detailed investigation of the interaction between massive stars and their environment. Aims. We study the massive star population of Orion and its feedback in terms of energy and mass, in order to compare the current knowledge of massive stars with kinematic and radioactive tracers in the surrounding interstellar medium (ISM). Methods. We assembled a census of the …

Correlation Analysis Of Intracellular And Secreted Cytokines Via The Generalized Integrated Mean Fluorescence Intensity, Parisa Shooshtari, Edgardo S. Fortuno, Darren Blimkie, Miao Yu, Arvind Gupta, Tobias R. Kollmann, Ryan R. Brinkman

Paediatrics Publications

The immune response in humans is usually assessed using immunogenicity assays to provide biomarkers as correlates of protection (CoP). Flow cytometry is the assay of choice to measure intracellular cytokine staining (ICS) of cell-mediated immune (CMI) biomarkers. For CMI analysis, the integrated mean fluorescence intensity (iMFI) was introduced as a metric to represent the total functional CMI response as a CoP. iMFI is computed by multiplying the relative frequency (percent positive) of cells expressing a particular cytokine with the MFI of that population, and correlates better with protection in challenge models than either the percentage or the MFI of the …

Schrödinger Dispersive Dstimates For A Dcaling-Critical Class Of Potentials, Marius Beceanu, Michael Goldberg

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Scholarship

Consider the focussing cubic nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation in R 3 :

iψ t +Δψ=−|ψ| 2 ψ.

It admits special solutions of the form e itα ϕ , whereϕ is a Schwartz function and a positive (ϕ>0 ) solution of

−Δϕ+αϕ=ϕ 3 .

The space of all such solutions, together with those obtained from them by rescaling and applying phase and Galilean coordinate changes, called standing waves, is the eight-dimensional manifold that consists of functions of the form e i(v⋅+Γ) ϕ(⋅−y,α) . We prove that any solution starting sufficiently close to a standing wave in the Σ=W 1,2 (R 3 …

Insert Student Here: Why Content Area Constructions Of Literacy Matter For Pre-Service Teachers, Kristine Gritter

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

This article explores content area pre-service teacher beliefs about disciplinary knowledge, perceptions of effective content area teaching, and existing beliefs about how to integrate literacy into the content areas. Ten pre-service teachers across ten secondary content areas were asked to describe three important variables in secondary teaching: 1) the knowledge of their content area, 2) characteristics of a successful content area teacher, and 3) literacy activities that would optimally convey disciplinary knowledge to students. Content area responses to the first two prompts yielded comparatively static, teacher-centered notions of knowledge and teaching. However, responses to the third prompt indicated at least …

Chemical Changes In Soil And Soil Solution After Calcium Silicate Addition To A Northern Hardwood Forest, Youngil Cho, Charles T. Driscoll, Chris E. Johnson, Thomas G. Siccama

Civil and Environmental Engineering - All Scholarship

Liming has been used to mitigate effects of acidic deposition in forest ecosystems. This study was designed to examine the effects of calcium (Ca) supply on the spatial patterns and the relations between soil and soil solution chemistry in a base-poor forest watershed. Watershed 1 at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest in New Hampshire, USA was experimentally treated with wollastonite (CaSiO3) in October, 1999. Exchangeable Ca (Ex-Ca), soil pHs (in 0.01 M CaCl2), effective cation exchange capacity (CECe), and effective base saturation (BSe) increased, while exchangeable acidity (Ex-Acid) decreased …

Molecular Dynamics Simulations Suggest That Rna Three-Way Junctions Can Act As Flexible Rna Structural Elements In The Ribosome, Neocles B. Leontis, Ivana Beššová, Kamila Réblová, Jiří Šponer

Chemistry Faculty Publications

We present extensive explicit solvent molecular dynamics analysis of three RNA three-way junctions (3WJs) from the large ribosomal subunit: the 3WJ formed by Helices 90-92 (H90-H92) of 23S rRNA; the 3WJ formed by H42-H44 organizing the GTPase associated center (GAC) of 23S rRNA; and the 3WJ of 5S rRNA. H92 near the peptidyl transferase center binds the 3'-CCA end of amino-acylated tRNA. The GAC binds protein factors and stimulates GTP hydrolysis driving protein synthesis. The 5S rRNA binds the central protuberance and A-site finger (ASF) involved in bridges with the 30S subunit. The simulations reveal that all three 3WJs possess …

Kummer's conjecture predicts the rate of growth of the relative class numbers of cyclotomic fields of prime conductor. We extend Kummer's conjecture to cyclotomic fields of conductor n, where n is any natural number. We show that the Elliott-Halberstam conjecture implies that this generalised Kummer's conjecture is true for almost all n but is false for infinitely many n. Effects Of Bubbles And Sea Spray On Air–Sea Exchange In Hurricane Conditions, Alexander Soloviev, Roger Lukas Sep 2010

Effects Of Bubbles And Sea Spray On Air–Sea Exchange In Hurricane Conditions, Alexander Soloviev, Roger Lukas

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

The lower limit on the drag coefficient under hurricane force winds is determined by the break-up of the air–sea interface due to Kelvin–Helmholtz instability and formation of the two-phase transition layer consisting of sea spray and air bubbles. As a consequence, a regime of marginal stability develops. In this regime, the air–sea drag coefficient is determined by the turbulence characteristics of the two-phase transition layer. The upper limit on the drag coefficient is determined by the Charnock-type wave resistance. Most of the observational estimates of the drag coefficient obtained in hurricane conditions and in laboratory experiments appear to lie between …

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Research Publications

A number of neutron star low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) have recently been discovered to show broad, asymmetric Fe K emission lines in their X-ray spectra. These lines are generally thought to be the most prominent part of a reflection spectrum, originating in the inner part of the accretion disk where strong relativistic effects can broaden emission lines. We present a comprehensive, systematic analysis of Suzaku and XMM-Newton spectra of 10 neutron star LMXBs, all of which display broad Fe K emission lines. Of the 10 sources, 4 are Z sources, 4 are atolls, and 2 are accreting millisecond X-ray pulsars …
