Suitability Review Of Common Synchronous, Live Online-Classroom Tools, Arnold Hensman Oct 2010

Suitability Review Of Common Synchronous, Live Online-Classroom Tools, Arnold Hensman

Conference Papers

While virtual learning environments (VLEs) such as Moodle and WebCT are now ubiquitous in most higher education institutes, live synchronous virtual classroom software is merely gaining in popularity. The first online meeting tools were tailored towards business requirements for remotely held meetings rather than educational purposes. The recent expansion of virtual classroom tools specific to education has changed this. Such software offers the standard features of streamed voice and video, yet purposely provides an array of additional features specifically designed to conduct classes online. While VLEs work optimally as a compliment to standard courses, Virtual-classrooms such as Adobe Connect Pro …

Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

Phosphorylation of the C-terminal domain of RNA polymerase II controls the co-transcriptional assembly of RNA processing and transcription factors. Recruitment relies on conserved CTDinteracting domains that recognize different CTD phosphoisoforms during the transcription cycle, but the molecular basis for their specificity remains unclear. We show that the CTD-interacting domains of two transcription termination factors, Rtt103 and Pcf11, achieve high affinity and specificity both by specifically recognizing the phosphorylated CTD and by cooperatively binding to neighboring CTD repeats. Single amino acid mutations at the protein-protein interface abolish cooperativity and affect recruitment at the 3′-end processing site in vivo. We suggest that …

Teacher Perceptions Of Disproportionality Of Minorities In Special Education, Kristy Henry Park Oct 2010

Teacher Perceptions Of Disproportionality Of Minorities In Special Education, Kristy Henry Park

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The intent of this study was to determine if special education teachers had certain perceptions regarding the disproportionate amount of minorities in special education classes. I examined special education teachers' awareness of the disproportionality, their causal theories, and the effectiveness of Response to Intervention (RTI) to regulate disproportionality. I implemented three different data collection methods to measure the teachers' perceptions: an initial face-to-face interview session, a written survey, and additional interview questioning. Participants in the study included 11 special education teachers from three middle schools in Northern Georgia. Ten of the 11 teachers admitted awareness of the problem of disproportionality, …

Vlt Observations Of Ngc 1097'S “Dog-Leg” Tidal Stream: Dwarf Spheroidals And Tidal Streams, P. Galianni, F. Patat, James L. Higdon, S. Mieske, P. Kroupa

Physics & Astronomy: Faculty Publications

Aims. We investigate the structure and stellar population of two large stellar condensations (knots A & B) along one of the faint optical “jet-like” tidal streams associated with the spiral NGC 1097, with the goal of establishing their physical association with the galaxy and their origin.

Methods. We use the VLT/FORS2 to get deep V-band imaging and low-resolution optical spectra of two knots along NGC 1097's northeast “dog-leg” tidal stream. With this data, we explore their morphology and stellar populations.

Results. Spectra were obtained for eleven sources in the field surrounding the tidal stream. The great …

Extracting Physical And Environmental Information Of Irish Roads Using Airborne And Mobile Sensors, Salman Mumtaz Oct 2010

Extracting Physical And Environmental Information Of Irish Roads Using Airborne And Mobile Sensors, Salman Mumtaz

Doctoral

Airborne sensors including LiDAR and digital cameras are now used extensively for capturing topographical information as these are often more economical and efficient as compared to the traditional photogrammetric and land surveying techniques. Data captured using airborne sensors can be used to extract 3D information important for, inter alia, city modelling, land use classification and urban planning. According to the EU noise directive (2002/49/EC), the National Road Authority (NRA) in Ireland is responsible for generating noise models for all roads which are used by more than 8,000 vehicles per day. Accordingly, the NRA has to cover approximately 4,000 km of …

Anderson Localization As Position-Dependent Diffusion In Disordered Waveguides, Ben Payne, Alexey Yamilov, Sergey E. Skipetrov Oct 2010

Anderson Localization As Position-Dependent Diffusion In Disordered Waveguides, Ben Payne, Alexey Yamilov, Sergey E. Skipetrov

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We show that the recently developed self-consistent theory of Anderson localization with a position-dependent diffusion coefficient is in quantitative agreement with the supersymmetry approach up to terms of the order of 1 / g20 (with g0 the dimensionless conductance in the absence of interference effects) and with large-scale ab initio simulations of the classical wave transport in disordered waveguides, at least for g0 ≥ 0.5. In the latter case, agreement is found even in the presence of absorption. Our numerical results confirm that in open disordered media, the onset of Anderson localization can be viewed as …

Dynamical Conductivity At The Dirty Superconductor-Metal Quantum Phase Transition, Adrian Del Maestro, Bernd Rosenow, Jose A. Hoyos, Thomas Vojta Oct 2010

Dynamical Conductivity At The Dirty Superconductor-Metal Quantum Phase Transition, Adrian Del Maestro, Bernd Rosenow, Jose A. Hoyos, Thomas Vojta

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We study the transport properties of ultrathin disordered nanowires in the neighborhood of the superconductor-metal quantum phase transition. To this end we combine numerical calculations with analytical strong-disorder renormalization group results. The quantum critical conductivity at zero temperature diverges logarithmically as a function of frequency. In the metallic phase, it obeys activated scaling associated with an infinite-randomness quantum critical point. We extend the scaling theory to higher dimensions and discuss implications for experiments.

Evaluation Of Computational Techniques For Solving The Boltzmann Transport Equation For Lattice Thermal Conductivity Calculations, Aleksandr V. Chernatynskiy, Simon R. Phillpot Oct 2010

Evaluation Of Computational Techniques For Solving The Boltzmann Transport Equation For Lattice Thermal Conductivity Calculations, Aleksandr V. Chernatynskiy, Simon R. Phillpot

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

Three methods for computing thermal conductivity from lattice dynamics (the iterative method, the variational method, and the relaxation-time approximation) are compared for the prototypical case of solid argon. The iterative method is found to produce results in close agreement with Green-Kubo molecular-dynamics simulations, a formally correct method for computing thermal conductivity. The variational method and relaxation-time approximation are found to underestimate the thermal conductivity. The relationship among the methods is established; a combination of the iterative and variational methods is found to have a fastest convergence. Formal convergence of the iterative method is demonstrated and a simple mixing rule is …

The Stories They’D Tell: Pre-Service Elementary Teachers Writing Stories To Demonstrate Physical Science Concepts, Jennifer Kreps Frisch

Faculty Articles

Preservice teachers enrolled in a science content-based course wrote stories that could help their future students understand a science concept. First, participants chose their topic and wrote the story with few guidelines to establish a baseline. In the next part, a different set of students were given a choice of three topics (based on force, electricity, and heat misconceptions), and collaborated to write stories with guidance from the instructor. Stories were analyzed for narrative and science units, and test scores examined. Without guidance, many students struggled to find ways to integrate science within a story. With guidance, participants wrote stories …

Detecting Photographic Composites Of Famous People, Eric Kee, Hany Farid Oct 2010

Detecting Photographic Composites Of Famous People, Eric Kee, Hany Farid

Computer Science Technical Reports

Photos are commonly falsified by compositing two or more people into a single image. We describe how such composites can be detected by estimating a camera's intrinsic parameters. Differences in these parameters across the image are then used as evidence of tampering. Expanding on earlier work, this approach is more applicable to low-resolution images, but requires a reference image of each person in the photo as they are directly facing the camera. When considering composites of famous people, such a reference photo is easily obtained from an on-line image search.

Electroencephalogram Artifact Removal Using A Wavelet Neural Network, Hoang-Anh T. Nguyen Oct 2010

Electroencephalogram Artifact Removal Using A Wavelet Neural Network, Hoang-Anh T. Nguyen

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A wavelet neural network (WNN) technique rs developed for electroencephalogram (EEG) artifact removal without electrooculographic (EOG) recordings. The algorithm combines the universal approximation characteristics of neural networks and the time/frequency property of wavelet, where the neural network was trained on a simulated dataset with known ground truths. The contribution of this thesis is two-fold. First, many EEG artifact removal algorithms, including regression based methods, require reference EOG signals, which are not always available. To remove EEG ai1ifacts, a WNN tries to learn the characteristics of the artifacts first and does not need reference EOG signals once trained. Second, WNNs are …

Facile Pyrolytic Synthesis Of Silicon Nanowires, Joo C. Chan, Hoang Tran, James W. Pattison, Shankar B. Rananavare

Chemistry Faculty Publications and Presentations

One-dimensional nanostructures such as silicon nanowires (SiNW) are attractive candidates for low power density electronic and optoelectronic devices including sensors. A new simple method for SiNW bulk synthesis[1, 2] is demonstrated in this work, which is inexpensive and uses low toxicity materials, thereby offering a safe, energy efficient and green approach. The method uses low flammability liquid phenylsilanes, offering a safer avenue for SiNW growth compared with using silane gas. A novel, duo-chamber glass vessel is used to create a low-pressure environment where SiNWs are grown through vapor-liquid-solid mechanism using gold nanoparticles as a catalyst. The catalyst decomposes silicon precursor …

The Waterfalls Of Kauai, Hawaii, Darryll T. Pederson Oct 2010

The Waterfalls Of Kauai, Hawaii, Darryll T. Pederson

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Everyone enjoys the sounds and sights of a tropical waterfall. They are the setting for romantic and action packed movies. Fantasy Island used Wailua Falls on Kauai to open their weekly TV series. From a different viewpoint waterfall origin and evolution has been attributed to a wide range of geologic processes. The Hawaiian Island's waterfalls and amphitheater-headed valleys have been cited by many as equivalent to similar features seen on Mars. After a number of years of studying these features on Kauai, I offer the following thoughts and observations about Kauai's waterfalls and amphitheater-headed valleys.

Continental Warming Preceding The Paleocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum, Ross Secord, Philip D. Gingerich, Kyger C. Lohmann, Kenneth G. Macleod

Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications

Marine and continental records show an abrupt negative shift in carbon isotope values at ~55.8 Myr ago. This carbon isotope excursion (CIE) is consistent with the release of a massive amount of isotopically light carbon into the atmosphere and was associated with a dramatic rise in global temperatures termed the Paleocene–Eocene thermal maximum (PETM). Greenhouse gases released during the CIE, probably including methane, have often been considered the main cause of PETM warming. However, some evidence from the marine record suggests that warming directly preceded the CIE, raising the possibility that the CIE and PETM may have been linked to …

Amino acids gets oxidized when they are interacted with oxygen and light. And it is always difficult for the researchers to find and isolate a particular amino acid from a protein, unless they completely know how it behaves when interacted with light. For this we are synthesizing amide form of the amino acid which mimics the structure of a protein, and we induce light and find out the exact behavior of the particular amino acid. Here, the aim is to know the tyrosine interaction with light, so we synthesize amide form of tyrosine which is N-Acetyl tyrosine ethyl amide from …

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a promising treatment that has continued to improve over the past thirty years when the first commercially approved photosensitizer (PS) was introduced. Although PDT has many successful applications, the terrifying number of new cancer cases reported each year makes scientists focus their efforts towards the development of new efficient PS for PDT. The biggest obstacle that prohibits PDT from becoming a more widely used therapy is the ineffective photosensitizers (PS) that are available on the market today. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the synthesized metal-porphyrin complex as a possible candidate as a PS. …
