Synthesis And Analytical Evaluation Of Folate Conjugates For Use In Cancer Cell Detection, Sneha Reddy Kuthuru Oct 2010

Synthesis And Analytical Evaluation Of Folate Conjugates For Use In Cancer Cell Detection, Sneha Reddy Kuthuru

All Capstone Projects

Recent clinical studies have shown the importance of folate receptor in drug delivery system as they increase the potency and reduce toxicity of many cancer therapies. The folate receptor alpha ( FR-a) binds with high affinity for folic acid and serves for receptor mediated transport of folate into cells. Folate is necessary for DNA metabolism and thus it is speculated that rapidly dividing cancer cells have an increased requirement for folic acid. It is known that FR-a levels are elevated in specific malignant diseases (solid tumors, leukemia) and thus the FR receptor serves as useful targeting moiety for the diagnosis …

A Study Of Wireless Network Security, Ningwei Sun Oct 2010

A Study Of Wireless Network Security, Ningwei Sun

All Capstone Projects

I intend to make a survey in wireless data security since wireless networks are very common, both for organizations and individuals. Many laptop computers have wireless cards pre-installed. The ability to enter a wireless network has great benefits. However, wireless networking has many security issues. Hackers have found wireless networks relatively easy to break into, and even use wireless technology to crack into wired network. As a result, it's very important that enterprises define effective wireless security policies that guard against unauthorized access to important resources.

My survey research may involve these following aspects: wireless network architecture, data security in …

Creating A Cmu Sphinx Based Speech Recognition Book Cataloguing Software, Sekani Tembo

Senior Seminars

This paper describes the design, implementation, and overall process that went into building a book cataloguing software that takes speech input, converts it to an integral ISBN number, looks up the relevant information on Amazon.com, and records said information in a database. It emphasizes the novelty of combining the Sphinx4 open-source speech recognition library and the Amazon Web Services Application Programming Interface in what's called a mashup.

Measurement And Modeling Of Infrared Nonlinear Absorption Coefficients And Laser-Induced Damage Thresholds In Ge And Gasb, Torrey J. Wagner, Matthew J. Bohn, Ronald A. Coutu Jr., L. P. Gonzales, J. M. Murray, K. L. Schepler, S. Guha Oct 2010

Measurement And Modeling Of Infrared Nonlinear Absorption Coefficients And Laser-Induced Damage Thresholds In Ge And Gasb, Torrey J. Wagner, Matthew J. Bohn, Ronald A. Coutu Jr., L. P. Gonzales, J. M. Murray, K. L. Schepler, S. Guha

Faculty Publications

Using a simultaneous fitting technique to extract nonlinear absorption coefficients from data at two pulse widths, we measure two-photon and free-carrier absorption coefficients for Ge and GaSb at 2.05 and 2.5 µm for the first time, to our knowledge. Results agreed well with published theory. Single-shot damage thresholds were also measured at 2.5 µm and agreed well with modeled thresholds using experimentally determined parameters including nonlinear absorption coefficients and temperature dependent linear absorption. The damage threshold for a single-layer Al2O3 anti-reflective coating on Ge was 55% or 35% lower than the uncoated threshold for picosecond or nanosecond …

Message from the President: The collective jury of humankind is still deliberating President Franklin Roosevelt’s affirmation that there is nothing to fear but fear itself. Fear, after all, is something. There is plenty of it around the campus nowadays, most of it instigated by the prospect of budget cuts and job eliminations but some of it elicited by the endangerment of previous resources. Lurking in the corner of all but the most numb academic mind is the thought that commerce and its seductive appeal might undermine support and sympathy for the traditions of free inquiry that have animated universities for …

Making A Place For Gifted Education: Learning From States That Maintain Gifted Education Programs Despite Academic And Economic Pressure, Amanda Vander Klay Oct 2010

Making A Place For Gifted Education: Learning From States That Maintain Gifted Education Programs Despite Academic And Economic Pressure, Amanda Vander Klay

Senior Honors Theses

As the passage of the No Child Left Behind Act (2001), which includes expectations for Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP), is constantly on the minds of state and local leaders, gifted programming has seen a decrease in the United States. In the difficult economy, limited resources are being funneled towards those students who need to increase their test scores to make AYP. This thesis will examine the model states of Kansas, Iowa, Oklahoma, and Arkansas that have managed to provide mandated and funded gifted programming while excelling in their AYP and managing the strains of tight state budgets.

Nmr-Based And Automated Docking Characterization Of Protein Structure, Dynamics, And Ligand Binding, Andrew Lawrence Olson Oct 2010

Nmr-Based And Automated Docking Characterization Of Protein Structure, Dynamics, And Ligand Binding, Andrew Lawrence Olson

Dissertations (1934 -)

NMR-based methods used in conjunction with a technique called docking are used to characterize ligand binding to proteins. Standard NMR methods were used to study the backbone dynamics of substrate binding to phosphomevalonate kinase (PMK) and it was observed that ligand binding caused PMK to undergo large conformational changes. These changes were reflected by the appearance of many chemical shift changes upon binding of the natural substrates of PMK (both the binary and ternary complexes) in 1H-15N HSQC NMR titration experiments. The same process was used to characterize the effect ligand binding has on the many arginines in the active …

Economic Analysis Of A Brackish Water Photovoltaic-Operated (Bwro-Pv) Desalination System, Ali Al-Karaghouli, Lawrence L. Kazmerski

Publications (E)

The photovoltaic (PV)-powered reverse-osmosis (RO) desalination system is considered one of the most promising technologies in producing fresh water from both brackish and sea water, especially for small systems located in remote areas. We analyze the economic viability of a small PV-operated RO system with a capacity of 5 m3/day used to desalinate brackish water of 4000 ppm total dissolve solids, which is proposed to be installed in a remote area of the Babylon governorate in the middle of Iraq; this area possesses excellent insolation throughout the year. Our analysis predicts very good economic and environmental benefits of …

Developing A Science Café Program For Your University Library, Jeanine Marie Scaramozzino, Catherine Trujillo

Library Scholarship

The Science Café is a national movement that attempts to foster community dialog and inquiry on scientific topics in informal venues such as coffee houses, bookstores, restaurants and bars. The California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, Robert E. Kennedy Library staff have taken the Science Café model out of bars and cafes and into the university's library. They have created an outreach opportunity as the campus community comes together to share and discuss faculty research, student work, and outside speakers' knowledge. The Science Café programs encourage open, easy-to-understand conversation exploring scientific and interdisciplinary topics in an attempt to build …

Nonlocal Quantum Information In Bipartite Quantum Error Correction, Mark M. Wilde, David Fattal Oct 2010

Nonlocal Quantum Information In Bipartite Quantum Error Correction, Mark M. Wilde, David Fattal

Faculty Publications

We show how to convert an arbitrary stabilizer code into a bipartite quantum code. A bipartite quantum code is one that involves two senders and one receiver. The two senders exploit both nonlocal and local quantum resources to encode quantum information with local encoding circuits. They transmit their encoded quantum data to a single receiver who then decodes the transmitted quantum information. The nonlocal resources in a bipartite code are ebits and nonlocal information qubits, and the local resources are ancillas and local information qubits. The technique of bipartite quantum error correction is useful in both the quantum communication scenario …

Comparison Of Volumes Of Convex Bodies In Real, Complex, And Quaternionic Spaces, Boris Rubin Oct 2010

Comparison Of Volumes Of Convex Bodies In Real, Complex, And Quaternionic Spaces, Boris Rubin

Faculty Publications

The classical Busemann-Petty problem (1956) asks, whether origin-symmetric convex bodies in Rn with smaller hyperplane central sections necessarily have smaller volumes. It is known, that the answer is affirmative if n≤4 and negative if n>4. The same question can be asked when volumes of hyperplane sections are replaced by other comparison functions having geometric meaning. We give unified analysis of this circle of problems in real, complex, and quaternionic n-dimensional spaces. All cases are treated simultaneously. In particular, we show that the Busemann-Petty problem in the quaternionic n-dimensional space has an affirmative answer if and only if n=2. The …

Program Transformations For Information Personalization, Saverio Perugini, Naren Ramakrishnan Oct 2010

Program Transformations For Information Personalization, Saverio Perugini, Naren Ramakrishnan

Computer Science Faculty Publications

Personalization constitutes the mechanisms necessary to automatically customize information content, structure, and presentation to the end user to reduce information overload. Unlike traditional approaches to personalization, the central theme of our approach is to model a website as a program and conduct website transformation for personalization by program transformation (e.g., partial evaluation, program slicing). The goal of this paper is study personalization through a program transformation lens and develop a formal model, based on program transformations, for personalized interaction with hierarchical hypermedia. The specific research issues addressed involve identifying and developing program representations and transformations suitable for classes of hierarchical …
