Conceptual And Solution Framework For The Construction Of Hybrid Benchmark And Annual Tables With Application To The Aggregation Scheme, Zheng Tian, Mulugeta Kahsai, Randall Jackson Oct 2010

Conceptual And Solution Framework For The Construction Of Hybrid Benchmark And Annual Tables With Application To The Aggregation Scheme, Zheng Tian, Mulugeta Kahsai, Randall Jackson

Regional Research Institute Technical Documents

Many applications arise in which the use of a recent IO table with higher levels of detail than the Annual BEA tables include is required. However, the detailed benchmark tables can be several years out of date. This Technical Document provides a mechanism by which the most recent benchmark table and the most recent annual table can be used to generate a hybrid table that remains consistent with the annual table at its level of aggregation, but with the disaggregated cell structure of the benchmark within each annual table cell. The application of this method to Make and Use tables …

Predator Functional Response Changed By Induced Defenses In Prey, Edd Hammill, Owen L. Petchey, Bradley R. Anholt Oct 2010

Predator Functional Response Changed By Induced Defenses In Prey, Edd Hammill, Owen L. Petchey, Bradley R. Anholt

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

Functional responses play a central role in the nature and stability of predator‐prey population dynamics. Here we investigate how induced defenses affect predator functional responses. In experimental communities, prey (Paramecium) expressed two previously undocumented inducible defenses—a speed reduction and a width increase—in response to nonlethal exposure to predatory Stenostomum. Nonlethal exposure also changed the shape of the predator’s functional response from Type II to Type III, consistent with changes in the density dependence of attack rates. Handling times were also affected by prey defenses, increasing at least sixfold. These changes show that induced changes in prey have a real defensive …

Multi-Robot Boundary Tracking With Phase And Workload Balancing, Michael Boardman, Jeremy Edmonds, Kyle Francis, Christopher M. Clark Oct 2010

Multi-Robot Boundary Tracking With Phase And Workload Balancing, Michael Boardman, Jeremy Edmonds, Kyle Francis, Christopher M. Clark

Computer Science and Software Engineering

This paper discusses the use of a cooperative multiple robot system as applied to distributed tracking and sampling of a boundary edge. Within this system the boundary edge is partitioned into subsegments, each allocated to a particular robot such that workload is balanced across the robots. Also, to minimize the time between sampling local areas of the boundary edge, it may be desirable to minimize the difference between each robots progression (i.e. phase) along its allocated sub segment of the edge. The paper introduces a new distributed controller that handles both workload and phase balancing. Simulation results are used to …

On Gradings In Khovanov Homology And Sutured Floer Homology, J. Elisenda Grigsby, Stephan M. Wehrli Oct 2010

On Gradings In Khovanov Homology And Sutured Floer Homology, J. Elisenda Grigsby, Stephan M. Wehrli

Mathematics - All Scholarship

We discuss generalizations of Ozsvath-Szabo's spectral sequence relating Khovanov homology and Heegaard Floer homology, focusing attention on an explicit relationship between natural Z (resp., 1/2 Z) gradings appearing in the two theories. These two gradings have simple representation-theoretic (resp., geometric) interpretations, which we also review.

Histogram Based Video Segmentation And Key Frame Extraction On Som And Dft, Songul Cecen Oct 2010

Histogram Based Video Segmentation And Key Frame Extraction On Som And Dft, Songul Cecen

Theses and Dissertations

A new key-frame extraction method, called "index-based retrieval (I-Base)", is presented based on DCT and SOM. It allows user to quickly find particular point within a certain domain and/or determine if the domain is relevant to the need. I-Base forms a hierarchy from the uniquely represented shots by using frames. Eventually the use of hierarchy leads to the generation of video content indexing. Doing so allows the user to map only the relevant section in the source with the request issued. The idea of 'just request-to-response mapping' prevents not only the unwanted information retrieval, but also saves time and bandwidth. …

Assessment Of Acgh Clustering Methodologies, Serena F. Baker Oct 2010

Assessment Of Acgh Clustering Methodologies, Serena F. Baker

Theses and Dissertations

Array comparative genomic hybridization (aCGH) is a technique for identifying duplications and deletions of DNA at specific locations across a genome. Potential objectives of aCGH analysis are the identification of (1) altered regions for a given subject, (2) altered regions across a set of individuals, and (3) clinically relevant clusters of hybridizations. aCGH analysis can be particularly useful when it identifies previously unknown clusters with clinical relevance. This project focuses on the assessment of existing aCGH clustering methodologies. Three methodologies are considered: hierarchical clustering, weighted clustering of called aCGH data, and clustering based on probabilistic recurrent regions of alteration within …

Compressed Sensing With Coherent And Redundant Dictionaries, Emmanuel J. Candès, Yonina C. Eldar, Deanna Needell, Paige Randall

CMC Faculty Publications and Research

This article presents novel results concerning the recovery of signals from undersampled data in the common situation where such signals are not sparse in an orthonormal basis or incoherent dictionary, but in a truly redundant dictionary. This work thus bridges a gap in the literature and shows not only that compressed sensing is viable in this context, but also that accurate recovery is possible via an ℓ1-analysis optimization problem. We introduce a condition on the measurement/sensing matrix, which is a natural generalization of the now well-known restricted isometry property, and which guarantees accurate recovery of signals that are …

The Lick–Carnegie Exoplanet Survey: A 3.1 M⊕ Planet In The Habitable Zone Of The Nearby M3v Star Gliese 581, Steve Vogt, R. Paul Butler, Eugenio J. Rivera, Nader Haghighipour, Gregory W. Henry, Michael H. Williamson

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

We present 11 years of HIRES precision radial velocities (RVs) of the nearby M3V star Gliese 581, combining our data set of 122 precision RVs with an existing published 4.3-year set of 119 HARPS precision RVs. The velocity set now indicates six companions in Keplerian motion around this star. Differential photometry indicates a likely stellar rotation period of ∼94 days and reveals no significant periodic variability at any of the Keplerian periods, supporting planetary orbital motion as the cause of all the RV variations. The combined data set strongly confirms the 5.37-day, 12.9-day, 3.15-day, and 67-day planets previously announced by …

The First Ten Months Of Investigation Of Gravity Waves And Temperature Variability Over The Andes, Jonathan Pugmire, Neal Criddle, Michael J. Taylor, P. D. Pautet, Yucheng Zhao Oct 2010

The First Ten Months Of Investigation Of Gravity Waves And Temperature Variability Over The Andes, Jonathan Pugmire, Neal Criddle, Michael J. Taylor, P. D. Pautet, Yucheng Zhao

Graduate Student Posters

The Andes region is an excellent natural laboratory for investigating gravity wave influences on the Upper Mesospheric and Lower Thermospheric (MLT) dynamics. The instrument suite that comprised the very successful Maui-MALT program was recently re-located to a new Andes Lidar Observatory (ALO) located at Cerro Pachon, Chile to obtain in-depth seasonal measurements of MLT dynamics over the Andes mountains. As part of the instrument set the Utah State University CEDAR Mesospheric Temperature Mapper (MTM) has operated continuously since August 2009 measuring the near infrared OH(6,2) band and the O2(0,1) Atmospheric band intensity and temperature perturbations. This poster focuses on an …

Quantum Equivalent Magnetic Fields That Are Not Classically Equivalent, Carolyn Gordon, William Kirwin, Dorothee Schueth, David Webb Oct 2010

Quantum Equivalent Magnetic Fields That Are Not Classically Equivalent, Carolyn Gordon, William Kirwin, Dorothee Schueth, David Webb

Dartmouth Scholarship

We construct pairs of compact Kähler-Einstein manifolds (Mi,gi,ωi)(i=1,2) of complex dimension n with the following properties: The canonical line bundle Li=⋀nT∗Mi has Chern class [ωi/2π], and for each positive integer k the tensor powers L⊗k1 and L⊗k2 are isospectral for the bundle Laplacian associated with the canonical connection, while M1 and M2 – and hence T∗M1 and T∗M2 – are not homeomorphic. In the context of geometric quantization, we interpret these examples as magnetic fields which are quantum equivalent but not classically equivalent. Moreover, we construct many …

Slot Exchange And Purchase Planning Of Short Sea Services For Liner Carriers, Hua-An Lu, Shu-Ling Chen, Peter Lai Oct 2010

Slot Exchange And Purchase Planning Of Short Sea Services For Liner Carriers, Hua-An Lu, Shu-Ling Chen, Peter Lai

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

In a slot exchange co-operation, participating carriers seek to benefit in which their surplus of controlled capacities can be shared to exchange slots belong to partners for their shortages. To each participant, whether the exchanged conditions can bring more benefits is based on its slot allocation planning. This paper introduces a practical slot exchange contract for multiple short sea loops between two co-operative carriers. Two integer programming models for maximizing the concerned profits are proposed to satisfy the expected demand level and shipping properties. One of the models merely considers slot exchange as the practical planning, and the other one …

Optimal Estimation For Key Parameters Of The Marine Quality Model Using Data-Driven Neural Network, Ming-Chang Li, Shu-Xiu Liang, Zhao-Chen Sun, Guang-Yu Zhang Oct 2010

Optimal Estimation For Key Parameters Of The Marine Quality Model Using Data-Driven Neural Network, Ming-Chang Li, Shu-Xiu Liang, Zhao-Chen Sun, Guang-Yu Zhang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Marine water quality models are complicated because of their multi-parameter and multi-response characteristics. One major difficulty with water quality models is the accurate estimation of model parameters. In this paper, a new method based on a data-driven model (DDM) is developed to retrieve the value of model parameters. All training data are calculated by numerical water quality models from results of multiparameter matching design cases so the physical properties are not disturbed. The concept is to find the relationship between model parameters and the pollution concentration values of interior stations. Field data are imported into the relationship for inversing optimal …

Application Of Project Cash Management And Control For Infrastructure, Cheng-Wu Chen, Morris Hsiao-Lung Wang, Kevin Fong-Re Liu, Tsung-Hao Chen

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

In this study we look at infrastructure tender projects. Financial data for cost estimates are collected from 42 infrastructure tender projects (including 20 MRT construction tender projects, 14 highway construction tender projects, and 8 public building tender projects). The Takagi-Sugeno’s fuzzy theory is first applied to build an s-curve regression model for big projects. After the model is fitted, the cash-to-cash cycle concept is applied to analyze and diagram cash flow estimations for the execution stage of contracted projects. The goal is to understand short-term financial demands that occur during the execution stage, which leads to a better understanding of …

The Budget Allocation Model Of Public Infrastructure Projects, Wen-Chih Huang, Junn-Yuan Teng, Maw-Cherng Lin Oct 2010

The Budget Allocation Model Of Public Infrastructure Projects, Wen-Chih Huang, Junn-Yuan Teng, Maw-Cherng Lin

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

One of the most important problems for governments is how to allocate budgets for public infrastructure projects. This question becomes especially important during periods of financial difficulties. The budget allocation model of public infrastructure projects proposed in this paper integrates 3 submodels: the fuzzy multi-criteria grade classification model; the fuzzy multi-criteria project ranking model; and the budget allocation model. This integrated model promises to allocate simultaneously the budget of public infrastructure projects and decide the construction budget for each unit. This budget allocation mode allows for ready reactions to changes of budget policies. It moreover, factors for discretionary budgets given …

A Novel Algorithm To Define Infection Tendencies In H1n1 Cases In Mainland China, Fan Ding, Dante S. Zarlenga, Chengfeng Qin

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Incidences of H1N1 viral infections in Mainland China are collected by the Ministry of Health, the People’s Republic of China. The number of confirmed cases and the timing of these outbreaks from May 13 to July 22, 2009 were obtained and subjected to a novel mathematical model to simulate the infection profile (time vs number). The model was predicated upon the grey prediction theory which allows assignment of future trends using limited numbers of data points. During the period of our analysis, the number of confirmed H1N1 cases in Mainland China increased from 1 to 1772. The efficiency of our …

The Effect Of Network Structure On The Provision Of Security, Annelies Z. Kamran Oct 2010

The Effect Of Network Structure On The Provision Of Security, Annelies Z. Kamran

Working Papers

The term “security” has many more dimensions in the post-9/11 world than it had during the Cold War.  Threats may come from different sources, at different speeds, and have different targets.  All the actors involved in the provision of security from a specific type of threat create a network—not just states or states in intergovernmental organizations, but all the actors in the “ecosystem." If we look at the relationships among these actors using network analysis, we should be able to map the structure of the entire network. Contrary to the assumptions in most International Relations literature, networks can be centralized …

National Security And Global Financial Governance, Annelies Z. Kamran Oct 2010

National Security And Global Financial Governance, Annelies Z. Kamran

Working Papers

One threat in the post-9/11 world that was previously subsumed under the Cold War rubric is the threat of instability in financial markets that can undermine the legitimacy of the governments of states. Understanding the structure of international finance is thus crucial to issues of global governance, the more so because the contemporary structure of finance can threaten any individual state beyond its capacity to cope. All the actors in finance (whether commercial or investment banks, central banks, or other types) are connected by each financial transaction they make, as well as every regulatory or enforcement transaction; all transactions are …

Hamilton Decomposition Of Complete Bipartite 3-Uniform Hypergraphs, Jirimutu Jirimutu, Jul Wang Oct 2010

Hamilton Decomposition Of Complete Bipartite 3-Uniform Hypergraphs, Jirimutu Jirimutu, Jul Wang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The problem of finding a Hamilton decomposition of the complete 3-uniform hypergraph 3 Kn has been solved for n ≡ 2(mod 3), n ≡ 4(mod 6) [2], n ≡ 1(mod 6), n ≡ 0(mod 3) (for 3 , K I n − the complete 3-uniform hypergraph minus a 1- factor) [5]. In this paper, we give the concept of the bipartite hypergraphs and find a Hamilton decomposition of the complete bipartite hypergraph 3 Km,m for m be prime.

Tinker, Jay Graham Oct 2010

Tinker, Jay Graham

Theses

The works presented here are primarily an exploration into movements of volumes and forms, and the ways in which these seemingly simple whole forms can challenge our methods of knowing. These works use physical movement or other means to occupy more than one class of object, illustrating the difficulty in having a coherent schematic for organizing objects like this, and generally organizing any system of knowledge. This problem of having the difficulty of creating anything has given rise to the ironic form, where the focus is on avoiding a statement, to prevent a refutation. This is an inherently negative mode, …
