An Onboard Vision System For Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Guidance, Barrett Bruce Edwards Nov 2010

An Onboard Vision System For Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Guidance, Barrett Bruce Edwards

Theses and Dissertations

The viability of small Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) as a stable platform for specific application use has been significantly advanced in recent years. Initial focus of lightweight UAV development was to create a craft capable of stable and controllable flight. This is largely a solved problem. Currently, the field has progressed to the point that unmanned aircraft can be carried in a backpack, launched by hand, weigh only a few pounds and be capable of navigating through unrestricted airspace. The most basic use of a UAV is to visually observe the environment and use that information to influence decision making. …

Domination And Independent Domination In Graphs, Bruce Priddy Nov 2010

Domination And Independent Domination In Graphs, Bruce Priddy

Combinatorics Seminar

A dominating set for a graph G = (VE) is a subset D of V such that every vertex not in D is joined to at least one vertex in D by some edge. If a dominating set D is an independent set, that is, no edge between any two vertices in D, then D is called an independent dominating set. Let (G) denote the number of vertices in a smallest dominating set for G and i(G) denote the number of vertices in a smallest independent dominating set for G. In this talk, we will begin with an introduction to …

Work Towards The Isolation And Characterization Of The Muscle Isoform Of Glucose 1,6-Bisphosphatase, Caleb J. Hiller Nov 2010

Work Towards The Isolation And Characterization Of The Muscle Isoform Of Glucose 1,6-Bisphosphatase, Caleb J. Hiller

Theses and Dissertations

Glucose 1,6-bisphosphate is an important small molecule involved in the regulation of glycolysis. Four enzymes synthesize this compound. One enzyme is known to degrade it, glucose 1,6-bisphosphatase. Other groups have produced work that indicates that there are two isoforms of this enzyme, one predominant in the brain and one in the muscle. This thesis contains the work performed in attempts to isolate and characterize the muscle isoform of glucose 1,6-bisphosphatase. While this enzyme was not isolated, much was learned about it and the results from this work may help in the future identification of this enzyme.

Network Analysis And Comparative Phylogenomics Of Micrornas And Their Respective Messenger Rna Targets Using Twelve Drosophila Species, M Ryan Woodcock Nov 2010

Network Analysis And Comparative Phylogenomics Of Micrornas And Their Respective Messenger Rna Targets Using Twelve Drosophila Species, M Ryan Woodcock

Theses and Dissertations

MicroRNAs represent a special class of small (~21–25 nucleotides) non-coding RNA molecules which exert powerful post-transcriptional control over gene expression in eukaryotes. Indeed microRNAs likely represent the most abundant class of regulators in animal gene regulatory networks. This study describes the recovery and network analyses of a suite of homologous microRNA targets recovered through two different prediction methods for whole gene regions across twelve Drosophila species. Phylogenetic criteria under an accepted tree topology were used as a reference frame to 1) make inference into microRNA-target predictions, 2) study mathematical properties of microRNA-gene regulatory networks, 3) and conduct novel phylogenetic analyses …

Modern Variation In Predation Intensity: Constraints On Assessing Predator-Prey Relationships In Paleoecologic Reconstructions, James Funderburk Nov 2010

Modern Variation In Predation Intensity: Constraints On Assessing Predator-Prey Relationships In Paleoecologic Reconstructions, James Funderburk

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The complex interaction between predators and their prey is rarely preserved in the fossil record. However, predation of marine mollusks by drilling gastropods leaves a diagnostic hole in the shell of the prey, possibly allowing for quantitative analysis of this ecological interaction. Drilling frequency, as measured in marine mollusks both in the Modern and fossil record, has been heralded as a potential opportunity to quantify these ecological interactions and use these values in the testing of hypotheses.

This study employed the collection, tallying, and analysis of bulk samples derived from shelly deposits on 45 Modern beaches along the contiguous coast …

Carbon Isotope Compositions Of Terrestrial C3 Plants As Indicators Of (Paleo)Ecology And (Paleo)Climate, Matthew J. Kohn Nov 2010

Carbon Isotope Compositions Of Terrestrial C3 Plants As Indicators Of (Paleo)Ecology And (Paleo)Climate, Matthew J. Kohn

Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

A broad compilation of modern carbon isotope compositions in all C3 plant types shows a monotonic increase in δ13C with decreasing mean annual precipitation (MAP) that differs from previous models. Corrections for temperature, altitude, or latitude are smaller than previously estimated. As corrected for altitude, latitude, and the δ13C of atmospheric CO2, these data permit refined interpretation of MAP, paleodiet, and paleoecology of ecosystems dominated by C3 plants, either prior to 7–8 million years ago (Ma), or more recently at mid- to high latitudes. Twenty-nine published paleontological studies suggest preservational or scientific bias toward …

Laplacian Eigenmaps Manifold Learning And Anomaly Detection Methods For Spectral Images, Marcela Munoz Reales Nov 2010

Laplacian Eigenmaps Manifold Learning And Anomaly Detection Methods For Spectral Images, Marcela Munoz Reales

Theses

Spectral images provide a large amount of spectral information about a scene, but sometimes when studying images, we are interested in specific components. It is a difficult problem to separate the relevant information or what we call interesting from the background of a spectral image, even more so if our target objects are unknown. Anomaly detection is a process by which algorithms are designed to separate the anomalous (different) points from the background of an image. The data is complex and lives in a high dimension, manifold learning algorithms are used to analyze data that lives in a high dimensional …

Identifying Middle School Students At Risk For Dropping Out Of High School, Lisa Ellis Logan Nov 2010

Identifying Middle School Students At Risk For Dropping Out Of High School, Lisa Ellis Logan

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This study examined eighth grade predictor variables for predictive power in identifying students at-risk for dropping out of high school in a northwest Georgia school district. This study involved 340 participants from the 2005/2006 ninth grade class in the selected school district. This quantitative study employed correlation analyses to determine the linear relationship between dropping out of high school and the predictor variables. Logistic regression analysis determined which set of predictor variables best predicted the student outcome. The analysis indicated that years retained, discipline referrals, socioeconomic status, final math grade, CRCT math score, and absences were the most significant predictors …

What Can We Learn From The Misunderstandings Of Radical Constructivism?: Commentary On Slezak’S “Radical Constructivism: Epistemology, Education And Dynamite”, Dewey I. Dykstra Nov 2010

What Can We Learn From The Misunderstandings Of Radical Constructivism?: Commentary On Slezak’S “Radical Constructivism: Epistemology, Education And Dynamite”, Dewey I. Dykstra

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

>Problem • What alternative strategies from our experiences using a Piaget-based radical constructivist pedagogy might have more and better results than the current practice of responding in debate form, each side trying to prove the other wrong?

>Method • Use of Slezak’s paper to illuminate the point that the central problem with the interpretation of RC generally used in such writing is that the authors seem not to be able to operate from the central tenet of RC, which is the opposite of that used in realism. Description of how this failure to use the central tenet of RC results …

Radical Constructivism Has An Answer - But This Answer Is Not An Easy One, Dewey I. Dykstra Nov 2010

Radical Constructivism Has An Answer - But This Answer Is Not An Easy One, Dewey I. Dykstra

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

>Context • In spite of its advantages and its ability to make valid responses to objections, radical constructivism is not mainstream.

>Problem • Extolling the virtues of radical constructivism and responding logically to the objections does not work. We know this from the evidence of many attempts. Our theoretical stance, radical constructivism, also suggests this approach is not likely to have much influence on realists. We cannot transmit understanding in the signals with which we attempt to communicate. How can we in radical constructivism enable those outside of RC to understand our explanation of human knowing?

>Method • Examine our …

[Fe-Fe]-Hydrogenase Reactivated By Residue Mutations As Bridging Carbonyl Rearranges: A Qm/Mm Study, Stefan Motiu, Valentin Gogonea Nov 2010

[Fe-Fe]-Hydrogenase Reactivated By Residue Mutations As Bridging Carbonyl Rearranges: A Qm/Mm Study, Stefan Motiu, Valentin Gogonea

Chemistry Faculty Publications

In this work, we found aqueous enzyme phase reaction pathways for the reactivation of the exogenously inhibited [Fe-Fe]-hydrogenases by O2, or OH−, which metabolizes to H2O (Dogaru et al., Int J Quantum Chem 2008, 108; Motiu et al., Int J Quantum Chem 2007, 107, 1248). We used the hybrid quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) method to study the reactivation pathways of the exogenously inhibited enzyme matrix. The ONIOM calculations performed on the enzyme agree with experimental results (Liu et al., J Am Chem Soc 2002, 124, 5175), that is, wild-type [Fe-Fe]-hydrogenase H-cluster is inhibited by oxygen metabolites. An enzyme spherical region …

Queening: Chess And Women In Medieval And Renaissance France, Regina L. O'Shea Nov 2010

Queening: Chess And Women In Medieval And Renaissance France, Regina L. O'Shea

Theses and Dissertations

This work explores the correlation between the game of chess and social conditions for women in both medieval and Renaissance France. Beginning with an introduction to the importance and symbolism of the game in European society and the teaching of the game to European nobility, this study theorizes how chess relates to gender politics in early modern France and how the game's evolution reflects the changing role of women. I propose that modifications to increase the directional and quantitative abilities of the Queen piece made at the close of the fifteenth century reflect changing attitudes towards women of the period, …
