Motion Events In Seri: Applying Talmy's Typologies, April E. Sachs Aug 2010

Motion Events In Seri: Applying Talmy's Typologies, April E. Sachs

Theses and Dissertations

Leonard Talmy's typologies of motion hypothesize that in a language's depiction of Motion events, the semantic components of the event will find characteristic expression in consistent morphosyntactic structures. In the motion-actuating typology, the main verb in an event of Motion will characteristically conflate Motion with either the Path, Figure, or Manner of Motion. In the motion-framing typology, the Path component will characteristically appear in either the verb or the satellite to the verb. These typologies, proposed in their most cited forms in Talmy (1985) and Talmy (1991), have been applied over the years to dozens of languages, with varying degrees …

George Orwell's "Depression" Novels: Laying Bare The Emotional Cost Of The Great Depression In Britain, Sonja Hathaway

Theses and Dissertations

The economic hardships that many people are facing in this the first decade of the twenty-first century have led politicians, historians, economists, and others to re-examine the 1930s in an attempt to understand their own time. The decade of the Great Depression was one of severe worldwide economic crisis and has been well documented, especially in Britain. Records compiled during the period by historians, statisticians, and social investigators have led to studies on the economic, political, and social conditions of the time. People are not, however, only physical, economic, and social beings. The challenge in studying the interwar period in …

Word Order Typology In Modern South Arabian Languages: A Study Based On A Corpus Of Analyzed Texts, David A. Cross Jr. Aug 2010

Word Order Typology In Modern South Arabian Languages: A Study Based On A Corpus Of Analyzed Texts, David A. Cross Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis I present a typological analysis of the Modern South Arabian Languages. Typological research is often based on a six-way typology of dominant word order based on clauses containing nominal subjects, objects and verbs. However, this clause type is extremely rare in this language group, making typological analysis based on a six-way typology problematic.

Dryer's Four-way typology of dominant word order is applied to the Modern South Arabian Languages and they are shown to be VS&VO. Greenberg's universals which refer to dominant word order are then reformulated in terms of the Four-way typology. These reformulated universals are shown …

Are Pictures Always Worth A Thousand Words? Interactions Between Reader, Text, And Diagrams In Multimodal Comprehension, Adam M. Renner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This study investigates the influence of diagrams and spatial layout on interactive effects of text cohesion, domain knowledge, and reading skill on the comprehension of multimodal science text. College undergraduates read either a low or high-cohesion text about cell mitosis that was or was not augmented with diagrams, and then answered text-based and bridging-inference comprehension questions. Results showed overall effects of diagrams and cohesion, but these effects largely depended on an integrated configuration as well as on ability level. Low-knowledge and less-skilled readers benefited from cohesion when the text did not contain diagrams, and only benefited from diagrams when presented …

The Perception Of Natural, Cell Phone, And Computer-Synthesized Speech During The Performance Of Simultaneous Visual-Motor Tasks, Nirmal Kumar Srinivasan Jul 2010

The Perception Of Natural, Cell Phone, And Computer-Synthesized Speech During The Performance Of Simultaneous Visual-Motor Tasks, Nirmal Kumar Srinivasan

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This study investigated the influence of top-down and bottom-up information on speech perception in complex listening environments. Specifically, the effects of listening to different types of processed speech were examined on intelligibility and on simultaneous visual-motor performance. The goal was to extend the generalizability of results in speech perception to environments outside of the laboratory. The effect of bottom-up information was evaluated with natural, cell phone and synthetic speech. The effect of simultaneous tasks was evaluated with concurrent visual-motor and memory tasks. Earlier works on the perception of speech during simultaneous visual-motor tasks have shown inconsistent results (Choi, 2004; Strayer …

Pre-linguistic vocal productions are the manifestations of a unique capacity ofhuman infants. The uniqueness is characterized by voluntaryvocal play and systematic repetition which serveno fixed functions.Such pre-linguistic infant vocalizations are the product of complex processes of internal vocal exploration activities and external social interactions. However, very few studies have incorporated both aspects to understand the nature of early vocal development. Therefore, the current study aims to investigate the relationship between vocal category development and exploration activities in varying social communication circumstances, using a developmentally appropriate coding scheme for infant vocalization. The vocalizations of 7 infants at three different ages (approximately 4, 7, and …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Monolingual English and bilingual Spanish-English kindergarteners participated in rapid automatized naming (RAN) tasks with results quantified in terms of weighted phonological accuracy and accentedness. Fifty-six typically developing monolingual English children and 41 typically developing bilingual children were included in this study. Single-word speech samples were obtained to examine (a) total articulation time, (b) phonological accuracy, and (c) phonological transfer between L1 and L2. Findings indicated that similar phonological accuracy occurred in monolinguals and bilinguals in English, phonological transfer occurred between L1 and L2 in English and Spanish for bilinguals (resulting in accentedness in both languages), faster RAN was associated with …

Architecture + Behavior: The Built Environment, Natural Landscapes And At-Risk Youth, Jennifer Lynn Barker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

There exists an interesting parallel between the power and the limits of architecture and its relationship to the human experience. This thesis proposes the question of how architecture can affect behavior in light of both the poetic and the practical in regards to the built environment. By understanding the user, incorporating the mission and goals of the client, and striving to connect aspects of the built environment to the two, architecture can act as a powerful influencer on behavior. These ideas, along with research (in camp history, play theory, young adolescent development and learning, experiential learning, environment-behavior relationships, the natural …

Justifying Subversion: Why Nussbaum Got (The Better Interpretation Of) Butler Wrong, Ori J. Herstein Jul 2010

Justifying Subversion: Why Nussbaum Got (The Better Interpretation Of) Butler Wrong, Ori J. Herstein

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

One of the most common critiques directed at deconstructive and poststructuralist theories is that they are amoral – rejecting the validity of the very idea of norms and moral principles as grounds for justifying or criticizing political action and social structures – and that in rejecting the validity of the distinction between what is just and what is unjust, they “collaborate with evil.” By now, an almost canonical example of this common critique is found in Martha Nussbaum’s highly critical essay on the work of Judith Butler, titled The Professor of Parody.3 Here, I focus on Nussbaum’s critique and on …

Implementation Of Autotutor Lite, Lu Han Jul 2010

Implementation Of Autotutor Lite, Lu Han

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS) is a very efficient form of e-Learning, but most of the current existing ITSs usually require advanced computational resources and specialized client software installation. Thus, there is a need for an ITS that is accessible online and is less computationally demanding. The immediate objective of this thesis is to describe the implementation of an online tutoring system that requires fewer computational resources. This system is called AutoTutor Lite, which runs in a web browser. Another objective is to use the Learner’s Characteristics Curves (LCC) as the evaluation method in AutoTutor Lite. By utilizing the semantic …
