The Relationship Between Pretend Play And Cognitive, Linguistic, And Social Skills Development In Early Childhood : A Project Based Upon Secondary Analysis Of Developmental Screening Data From An Elementary School In Plainfield, Connecticut, Lauren Ann Sebastianelli
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
There is substantial research to support the positive correlation between pretend play and cognitive, language and social skills development in early childhood. Most of this research has explored bivariate relationships. We know little about how these variables might co-vary in the same sample. This exploratory study was based on secondary analysis of developmental screening data for a preschool program in Connecticut. The sample was comprised of 79 three and four year-olds. Proxies for pretend play and cognitive, language and social skills development were operationalized from a standardized instrument, Developmental Indicators for the Assessment of Learning (DIAL) and a Social Skills …

A Different World : First Generation Latinas And Family Role Change : A Project Based On An Independent Investigation, Emely D. Velez
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This qualitative study explored the subjective experiences of the transition to college among first generation Latinas as well as their caregiver's subjective understanding of the student's family role and the changes that occurred in the family once the student entered college. This study explored how Latino cultural values influence the Latina students' understanding of their family role and the influence of cultural phenomena on the transition to college. Data for this research were gathered from 12 individual interviews; 6 interviews conducted with alumnae from Mount Holyoke College and 6 selected caregivers. Alumnae participants in this study were self-identified first-generation Latinas …

Salazar V. Buono: The Cross Between Endorsement And History, Mary Jean Dolan
Salazar V. Buono: The Cross Between Endorsement And History, Mary Jean Dolan
NULR Online
The striking image of a white cross on stark rock, silhouetted against the desert sky, now symbolizes not only Christianity and, arguably, World War I military sacrifice, but also the equally dramatic, prolonged saga of the Salazar v. Buono litigation. The photos invoke the most recent Supreme Court battle in the legal and cultural war to define religion’s role in the public square. Competing approaches stress either preserving history or avoiding government endorsement of religion; this brief article analyzes a potential new synthesis suggested by Buono.
The original cross war memorial was erected in 1934 by a local group …

Introduction
Interchangeable with holy/sacred book, “scriptures” is the English language term that is still popularly used to refer to a text or collection of texts deemed to be of special if not unique origins, authority and power. Users of the term also tend to assume that “the Bible” of the Jewish and Christian traditions represents either the only instance of such or the example par excellence among some others. A popular linguistic and rhetorical placeholder among cultures of Indo-European origins, the English term originally simply meant (from the Greek graphe/-ai, ta biblia; Latin, scriptura/-ae; Hebrew, ketav/-uvim) and continues to mean …

The Predictive Relationship Between Temperament, School Adjustment, And Academic Achievement: A 2-Year Longitudinal Study Of Children At-Risk, Maha Al-Hendawi
The Predictive Relationship Between Temperament, School Adjustment, And Academic Achievement: A 2-Year Longitudinal Study Of Children At-Risk, Maha Al-Hendawi
Theses and Dissertations
Individual differences in temperament can be a risk or a protective factor for a child, especially for children at-risk who possess single or multiple risk factors that may interfere with their educational success and affect their healthy development and their life-long outcomes. This research study examined the concurrent and longitudinal relationships between temperament, school adjustment, and academic achievement in children at-risk. Seventy-seven children, ages five to 11 years, were reassessed two years after an initial study. Their teachers completed the Temperament Assessment Battery for Children (TABC), the Behavior Assessment System for Children (BASC), and reported on the children's academic achievement. …
The Construction Of Blackness In Honduran Cultural Production, A. Erin Mason-Montero
The Construction Of Blackness In Honduran Cultural Production, A. Erin Mason-Montero
Spanish and Portuguese ETDs
This dissertation investigates how marginalized communities of Afro-Hondurans are represented in literature and cinematic productions of non-black writers and film producers. Despite the efforts of the dominant Honduran community to suppress or alter the image of Afro-descendants, a small handful of Ladinos, or individuals of a mixed indigenous and Spanish background, have chosen to explore the Afro-Honduran image in their works. Chapter I, 'Through the Eyes of Another: Racial Identity in Honduras,' discusses the Honduran search for national identity during the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. After experiencing periods of political and economic instability, the Honduran government began to promote ancient …
Polyamory As "Ethical Nonmonogamy" : A Viable Alternative To Infidelity : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Sarah Kay Woodruff-Diaz
Polyamory As "Ethical Nonmonogamy" : A Viable Alternative To Infidelity : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Sarah Kay Woodruff-Diaz
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This research examined the practice of polyamory as "ethical nonmonogamy" within the United States. Long-term dyadic monogamy (usually between a man and woman, and sanctioned through marriage) is the hegemonic index for how most Americans continue to experience and authenticate relationships. However, patterns of frequent infidelity and frequent divorce undermine the rectitude of monogamy's core institution. This study sought to determine whether polyamory could provide a viable alternative to traditional models of long-term dyadic monogamy. It also sought to determine the capacity of poly phenomenon to foster intrapsychic growth and development, and provide psychic repair in spite of (and because …

Practice Wisdom : An Exploration Of School Social Workers Experience With Social And Emotional Learning Curricula : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Gordon David Gross
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
Of all of the professions that exist in a school setting, social workers are trained specifically in the three main theoretical tenets of social and emotional learning programs: systems theory, cognitive behavioral theory and psychoanalytic theory. Yet there is little in the literature about what the role of social work should be as a stakeholder in implementing a SEL curriculum. This qualitative research was designed to investigate what could be learned from the practice wisdom of school social workers in elementary schools that have adopted a SEL curriculum about their experiences and the roles they have adopted. This study employed …
No Chance To Explain : The Utility Of Attachment Theory When Working With African American Teen Mothers : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Amy Bauman
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
In this cross-sectional qualitative study the intersection of race and sexual orientation in the family planning process of interracial queer women-identified (IQW) couples was examined. For total participants N = 13. Themes included the affirmative nature of the intentionality of the family planning process for IQW couples as well as the difficulties of assisted conception. Participants spoke to their relationship to their family of origin and their fears and visions regarding their own family formation, related to genetic heritage, language, and traditions. Support systems offered by family of choice and social networks were discussed, specifically the need for community mirroring …
Brokering Mathematics Reform: How Principals In Predominantly Hispanic-Serving Schools Conceive Of Their Leadership Roles In The Implementation Of A District-Wide Mathematics Reform Initiative, Barbara Trujillo
Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs
Mathematics reform efforts have been of interest to educational researchers for many years, particularly since the first Curriculum and Standards for School Mathematics over twenty years ago. Yet, despite efforts to improve the teaching and learning of mathematics for all students, many students, particularly poor and minority students, still do not have access to instructional practices that allow them opportunities to learn important mathematics. Researchers have called this a problem of scale (Cobb & Smith, 2008), and have begun to consider the important role of the principal in scaling up the reforms. This qualitative cross-case study investigated the conceptions of …

Assembling Caliban: French And Other European Depictions Of American Bodies In The Sixteenth Century, Matthew Berch
Assembling Caliban: French And Other European Depictions Of American Bodies In The Sixteenth Century, Matthew Berch
History ETDs
The present study elucidates several of the key tropes and figures employed by a select group of French and European commentators and artists in their attempt to contextualize New World discovery. Utilizing travel narratives, voyager reports, and literary materials, this study traces a specific thematic genealogy from the late thirteenth century to the end of the Renaissance. Over a period of three hundred plus years, various European texts from Mandevilles Travels to The Tempest depicted European encounters with foreign bodies. While descriptions varied, certain recurring themes and tropes gradually developed as European explorers expanded the scope of their ethno-geographic inquiry. …
Lacan's Critique Of Freud's Case Of Dora And The Therapeutic Action Of Working In The Symbolic : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Sean Michael Breidenthal
Lacan's Critique Of Freud's Case Of Dora And The Therapeutic Action Of Working In The Symbolic : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Sean Michael Breidenthal
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This study was undertaken to determine the therapeutic action of working in the symbolic order. Lacan critiques psychoanalytic theory for reducing psychoanalysis to a therapy of the imaginary, thus ignoring the true significance of Freud's discovery. A review of contemporary accounts of therapeutic action established interpretation, the clinical relationship, and the position of the analyst as key identifiers of a theory of therapeutic action. The case of Dora was utilized to identify Freud's theory of therapeutic action. Lacan's critique of Freud's case in "Intervention on Transference" resulted in an explication of Lacan's theory of therapeutic action, particularly in regards to …

Girls Just Want To Be Funny : The Potential For Increased Self-Esteem, Self-Efficacy And Empowerment Through All-Female Comedy Groups : A Project Based Upon Independent Investigation, Elizabeth S. Ehrenberg
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
Offenders under the age of 18 account for 16.7% of arrests or convictions of forcible rapes and 20.61% of other sexual offenses (U.S. Department of Justice: CSOM, 2000). This study attempts to uncover emotional responses to crimes committed by adolescent sex offenders, particularly guilt and shame responses. Researchers have found that, despite their seeming interchangeability, guilt and shame can be considered separate emotional responses. These emotions can lead to differing behaviors and actions, with guilt typically resulting in a more pro-social response. For the purposes of this study, guilt and shame responses of adolescent sex offenders were explored, in comparison …

They'll Expect More Bad Things From Us.: Latino/A Youth Constructing Identities In A Racialized High School In New Mexico', Chalane E. Lechuga
Sociology ETDs
This research explores how Latino/a high school students in New Mexico constitute their racial identities in this particular historical moment, the post-Civil Rights colorblind era. I explore what their chosen nomenclatures and employed discourses suggest about the relationship between their racial identities and academic achievement. The research questions are: How do Latino/a youth articulate their expressions of racial identity in the post-Civil Rights colorblind era? What discourses or nomenclatures do they employ? How are these discourses distinguished from one another? What do their expressions of racial identity suggest about the relationship between racial identity and gender? What may their expressions …
International Cooperation And Water Resources Management: Hydrophilanthropy, Sustainable Development, And Sustainable Co-Development, Jean Fried
Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education
The paradigm of sustainable development as a strategy of dialogue and communication is of growing interest in the context of international cooperation, in a world of economic, environmental, and societal and demographic interdependence. After a brief discussion of the complexity of the concept of sustainable development, contributing to the difficulty of an operational definition, we introduce sustainable co-development as an operational set of principles and tools for the practical implementation of sustainable development policies in international cooperation, based on mutual trust, shared responsibilities and mutual benefits. Taking history and culture of all partners into account as a facilitator of mutual …

Traditional Representations Of The Natural Environment And Biodiversity Conservation: Sacred Groves In Ghana, Paul Sarfo-Mensah, Ernestina Antoh Fredua, William Oduro, Stephen Amisah
Traditional Representations Of The Natural Environment And Biodiversity Conservation: Sacred Groves In Ghana, Paul Sarfo-Mensah, Ernestina Antoh Fredua, William Oduro, Stephen Amisah
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
Local cosmologies and traditional perceptions of the natural environment, especially forests, have been a major influence in the management of the natural resources and biodiversity amongst rural communities in the transitional zone of Ghana. Sacred groves, which are typical outputs of traditional conservation practices, derive from indigenous religious beliefs and perceptions of forest. Sacred groves are believed to be the abode of local gods, ancestral spirits and other super natural beings. These beliefs and perceptions have in the past strongly supported the conservation of biodiversity. However, changes in local cosmologies threaten the protection of rare species, habitats and ecological processes. …

Fact-finding at the international tribunals is not as precise as we think. Nancy Combs, Professor of Law at William and Mary Law School, explores this in her new book 'Fact-finding without facts: the uncertain evidentiary foundations of international criminal convictions'.
