Adjustment Experiences And Ethnic Identity Attitudes Among High School Students In Advanced Academic Programs, Tiffany Michelle Hall
Adjustment Experiences And Ethnic Identity Attitudes Among High School Students In Advanced Academic Programs, Tiffany Michelle Hall
Teaching & Learning Theses & Dissertations
African American high school students have been historically underrepresented in advanced placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), and dual enrollment (DE) programs. The adoption of more equitable admissions practices has helped many school divisions develop a more ethnically diverse AP, IB, and DE student body. Despite increased African American student enrollment, retaining these students remains an ongoing problem. Equally troubling is the persistent achievement gap that exists between African American and White students in AP, IB, and DE programs African American students do not perform as well as Whites on program exit exams nor do they complete these programs at a …

Questions Of Transfer: Writers' Perspective On Familiar/Unfamiliar Writing Tasks In A Capstone Writing Course, Heather G. Lettner-Rust
English Theses & Dissertations
Understanding what students bring from one writing context to another may the central concern for teachers of writing from elementary school to adult learning. Research from the field of composition studies offers knowledge about writing as process(es) (Emig, 1971; Shaughnessy, 1979; Russell, 1999), as socially constructed performances (Flower & Hayes, 1980; Bartholomae, 1985; Bloom, 1985), and as part of a larger activity system (Russell, 1997). This dissertation ties together theories of writing as an activity in a broader system of tools and outcomes and current research on transfer in writing in order to illustrate writers' perspectives on particular writing tasks. …

Introduction To Symposium: Reasoning From Literature, Jessica Silbey
Introduction To Symposium: Reasoning From Literature, Jessica Silbey
Faculty Scholarship
The “literary turn” in legal studies manifests in many ways in our legal discipline and practice. Be it with the birth of the study of law and literature in the 1980s, the growing attention to narrative theory and storytelling in the law in the 1990s, or the “cultural turn” in legal studies in the 21st century (as some scholars have called the cultural analysis of law), reasoning from literature seems commonplace. And yet it is still marginalized in legal studies as interdisciplinary, not “really law,” and lacking the core persuasive power that legal argumentation and doctrinal analysis do. This Symposium …
An Evaluation Of A Dialogic Book-Reading Program For At Risk Children, Daniel Anthony Colangelo
An Evaluation Of A Dialogic Book-Reading Program For At Risk Children, Daniel Anthony Colangelo
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Children from low-income backgrounds are at a higher risk for reading difficulties partly because they are read to less frequently in the home (Adams, 1990). When shared reading does occur in low-income homes, it is usually of poorer quality when compared to reading in middle- or upper-income homes (Arnold, Lonigan, Whitehurst, Epstein, 1994). Dialogic reading, a form of enhanced discussion and structured questioning during shared-book reading, can be a cost effective way of improving the language and literacy skills of young children. The current research examines the effectiveness of a community-based, four-month dialogic reading intervention called the Dialogic Reading Club …
Witnessing From A Distance: Postwar Literary Representations Of The Holocaust, Miriam Carolin Raethel
Witnessing From A Distance: Postwar Literary Representations Of The Holocaust, Miriam Carolin Raethel
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
This thesis concerns itself with the possibilities and limits of witnessing the Holocaust from a distance. It analyzes the ways in which the notion of distance—temporal, geographical, linguistic, and aesthetic—influences, shapes, and alters the act of bearing witness to a remote historical event, which, because of its enormity, seemingly defies the act ofwitnessing and thus ofrepresentation. This study investigates the long-lasting impact ofthe Holocaust on subsequent generations, particularly on third-generation descendants ofvictims and perpetrators, and explores how the traumatic legacy ofthe Holocaust locates new forms of representation within the context ofpostmodernism, which, because of its emphasis on fragmentation, on the …
But Where Will They Build Their Nest? Liberalism And Communitarian Resistance In American Cinematic Portrayals Of Jewish-Gentile Romances, Holly A. Pearse
But Where Will They Build Their Nest? Liberalism And Communitarian Resistance In American Cinematic Portrayals Of Jewish-Gentile Romances, Holly A. Pearse
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
This dissertation analyzes approximately fifty American films that feature predominantly heterosexual interfaith/intercultural romantic, sexual or marital relations between Jewish and Gentile protagonists. It asks what political or social ideals can be illustrated by these portrayals, and how these films can be taken cumulatively to explore trends in modern life. The author places liberalism at the heart of the mainstream Hollywood discourse on intermarriage, and shows how films that run counter to the expectations of liberal romances may reflect communitarian critiques of liberal tenets.
The issue of intermarriage is contextualized with a discussion of the endogamous tradition in Judaism, and by …
Structure And Content Semantic Similarity Detection Of Extensible Markup Language Documents Using Keys, Waraporn Viyanon
Structure And Content Semantic Similarity Detection Of Extensible Markup Language Documents Using Keys, Waraporn Viyanon
Doctoral Dissertations
"XML (eXtensible Mark-up Language) has become the fundamental standard for efficient data management and exchange. Due to the widespread use of XML for describing and exchanging data on the web, XML-based comparison is central issues in database management and information retrieval. In fact, although many heterogeneous XML sources have similar content, they may be described using different tag names and structures. This work proposes a series of algorithms for detection of structural and content changes among XML data. The first is an algorithm called XDoI (XML Data Integration Based on Content and Structure Similarity Using Keys) that clusters XML documents …

American English Listeners’ Discrimination Of Australian, South African And Southeast England Varieties Of English: What Variation Matters?, Wendy Baker, Lyndsay Nay

Recent studies suggest that listeners are able to identify regional varieties of their native language (Clopper & Pisoni, 2007; Gooskens, 2005). These studies have also demonstrated that listeners use specific vowel, consonant, and intonational variation to make these identifications (Clopper & Pisoni, 2004; van Bezooijen & Gooskens, 1999). In most of these previous studies, however, listeners were asked to identify varieties with which they had at least some contact. What is not known is whether listeners can also distinguish between varieties with which they have little or no exposure and what linguistic features they use to do so. In particular, …

A Review Of Fieldworks Language Explorer, Chris Rogers Ph.D.
Faculty Publications
One of the most important goals in language documentation is to produce reference materials as well as to create long-lasting (i.e., archivable) materials for the languages. Fieldworks Language Explorer (FLEx) 3.0 is software for organizing and analyzing linguistic data and is produced for free download by SIL International (SIL)1 . This review has three goals: to show how the current version of FLEx addresses problems in earlier versions of the program, to highlight some of the more useful features of FLEx 3.0, and to indicate how it compares to other database programs.

The Eternal Jew: Jewish Victimization Through Marginalization, Joshua Fishlock
The Eternal Jew: Jewish Victimization Through Marginalization, Joshua Fishlock
Open Access Master's Theses
This thesis examines the phenomenon of Jewish marginalization in Nazi Germany using the film The Eternal Jew as a representative example. Specifically this study identified sources of guilt in post World War I German culture and the steps taken by the Nazi's to alleviate that guilt through victimization of the Jews. Results show that the Nazi's played upon cultural beliefs of German superiority and antisemitism in order to create a public reality of the Jews as the Other. This disidentification of the Jews from the German population increased the effectiveness of the usage of the Jews as scapegoats for the …
Whose Identity Is It Anyway? A Study Of The Media's Representation Of Iraq Citizens And Their Culture, Joyce L'Heureux
Whose Identity Is It Anyway? A Study Of The Media's Representation Of Iraq Citizens And Their Culture, Joyce L'Heureux
Open Access Master's Theses
What happens to our perceptions when provided with an invitation by news media, specifically print media, to accept what is presented as reality? Does what we read in the news media constrict our thinking and create an acceptance of the words as they are written, a type of cultural blindness to the qualities, the humanness and individuality of other cultures? Or, do we read the words on the paper and open our lens to create a greater understanding of individuals who differ from us in values, attitudes and beliefs? The truth is the same stories which provide us with an …

Thibaut De Champagne And Disputed Attributions: The Case Of Mss Bern, Burgerbibliothek 389 (C) And Paris, Bnf Fr. 1591(R), Christopher Callahan
Scholarship
This essay examines the manuscript context of the songs of Thibaut de Champagne that were either marginalized in or excluded from A. Wallensköld’s 1925 edition. An evaluation of the placement and ordering of Thibaut’s songs in the codices, as well as their rubrics and melodies, affords an understanding of the construction of these chansonniers, obscured through decades of reliance on print editions. A rapid scrutiny of these linguistically (C) and musically (R) marginal manuscripts both reveals how little we know about the transmission of trouvère lyric and underscores the importance of a material-philological approach for all future editions of the …

Ongoing efforts to annotate and web-enable Lushootseed language resources involve displaying complex dictionary information in ways suitable for diverse users. In this paper we discuss how we have converted dictionary data from its legacy format into a best-practice, state-of-the-art XML format. We also describe how we have been able to further leverage this XML data by making it compatible with Kirrkirr, a new dictionary browser designed to display dictionary information for Australian aboriginal languages. We sketch the process in adapting the dictionary browser to make it a very workable visualization tool for Lushootseed data as well. We also explain and …

Sentence Processing: Linking Language To Motor Chains, F Chersi, S Thill, T Ziemke, Am Borghi
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
A growing body of evidence in cognitive science and neuroscience points towards the existence of a deep interconnection between cognition, perception and action. According to this embodied perspective language is grounded in the sensorimotor system and language understanding is based on a mental simulation process (Jeannerod, 2007 ; Gallese, 2008 ; Barsalou, 2009 ). This means that during action words and sentence comprehension the same perception, action, and emotion mechanisms implied during interaction with objects are recruited. Among the neural underpinnings of this simulation process an important role is played by a sensorimotor matching system known as the mirror neuron …
Space, Time And The Constitution Of Subjectivity: Comparing Elias And Foucault, Paddy Dolan
Space, Time And The Constitution Of Subjectivity: Comparing Elias And Foucault, Paddy Dolan
Articles
The work of Foucault and Elias has been compared before in the social sciences and humanities, but here I argue that the main distinction between their approaches to the construction of subjectivity is the relative importance of space and time in their accounts. This is not just a matter of the “history of ideas,” as providing for the temporal dimension more fully in theories of subjectivity and the habitus allows for a greater understanding of how ways of being, acting and feeling in different spaces are related but largely unintended. Here I argue that discursive practices, governmental operations and technologies …
