The Effects Of Planning On The Narrative Writings Of Malaysian Tertiary Level Students., Sim Biow Yee Jan 2010

The Effects Of Planning On The Narrative Writings Of Malaysian Tertiary Level Students., Sim Biow Yee

Student Works (2010-2019)

Based on Kellogg’s model of writing, this study investigated the effects of planning on fluency, complexity and accuracy in the narrative writings of average proficiency undergraduates. 30 Malaysian students undertook the task of writing a narrative with the aid of a set of pictures and writing prompt, under three different conditions. No planning (NP) participants were instructed to write without planning time but with limited writing time. Pre-task planning (PTP) participants were given limited planning and writing time. Within-task planning (WTP) participants had unlimited writing time but no planning time. Results indicated that pre-task planning was beneficial in increasing fluency …

Exploring The Use Of Language Cues For Higher-Order Thinking Skills In The Muet Syllabus., Patricia Das Isaacs

Student Works (2010-2019)

This study is mainly concerned with how the English language can be used to our benefit to create a thinking society in Malaysia. Since the Malaysian University English Test or MUET is a requirement for students wishing to pursue first degree tertiary education in public universities, it is felt that students should be equipped with a certain level of competency in a language which is also an international language. Along with this it is essential that students be able to develop the higher-order thinking skills of critical and creative thinking, analysing and problem-solving which will prove to be useful in …

Greek Language And Culture In Australia, Anastasios M. Tamis Jan 2010

Greek Language And Culture In Australia, Anastasios M. Tamis

Arts Book Chapters

The Greek migration and settlement circle in Oceania comprised four important stages: the stage of exodus of approximately 300,000 Hellenes from their ancestral residences (1829-1974), the painful and agonizing stage of settlement in Australia and New Zealand during the pre- and post-WWlI period, the stage of their socioeconomic and cultural interaction during the years 1975-1995, and the stage of consolidation and citizenship that followed. During this period, Greek and Cypriot settlers arriving as migrants to Australia, were progessively transformed into citizens enhancing their social presence, consolidating their economic and cultural contribution, and overcoming the pre-War restrictive immigation policies and attitudes. …

Konsep Malu Orang Melayu Dalam Novel Saga : Satu Kajian Sosiolinguistik., Norazlina Mohd. Kiram

Student Works (2010-2019)

The concept of shyness is an important concept as it encompasses the principles, behaviors, beliefs and rules that should be observed by its society. In relation to this, the concept of shyness among Malays is regarded as peculiar and unique as it is based on the Holy Quran and as-Sunnah. Basically, it is considered as a character awareness concept for the Malays which is very much related to self  worth, dignity and maintenance of one’s face. This being the starting point, the research  tries to put forward an analysis of the concept of shyness among Malays which is  explored in …

(Re)Constructing Ell And International Student Identities In The Oral Communication Course, Richie Neil Hao Jan 2010

(Re)Constructing Ell And International Student Identities In The Oral Communication Course, Richie Neil Hao

Basic Communication Course Annual

There have been numerous studies (e.g., Dick, 1990; Ferris, 1998; Jung & McCroskey, 2004; Yook, 1995; Yook & Seiler, 1990; Zimmerman, 1995) that discuss the obstacles that English Language Learners (ELL) and international students face in oral communication classrooms. Although these studies provide teaching strategies that can be employed to better serve ELL and international students, they also reinforce stereotypical student identities. By exploring and engaging in critical communication pedagogy (Fassett & Warren, 2007), I problematize some of the foundational studies that construct ELL and international student identities as “at-risk” in oral communication classrooms and offer possibilities by specifically advocating …

Social Networking Sites: Evaluating And Investigating Their Use In Academic Research, Fiona Redmond Jan 2010

Social Networking Sites: Evaluating And Investigating Their Use In Academic Research, Fiona Redmond

Dissertations

Researchers must collect and analyse new data that will enhance the body of knowledge. It is for this reason that data is of major importance to researchers. All aspects of a research project involve data, from navigating existing data, to understanding how data is used in the world and why it is important to learn to collect data and make predictions. Researchers need to consider the types of data that are possible and examine and weight each option so they can determine what sources of data will answer the research questions or hypotheses.

Researchers, who require a large amount of …

Study Of Microstructure Effect On The Thermal Properties Of Yttria-Stabilized-Zirconia Thermal Barrier Coatings Made By Atmospheric Plasma Spray And Pressing Machine, Monica Bohorquez De Silva

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) are used in gas turbine engines to achieve a higher working temperature and thus lead to better efficiency. Yttria-Stabilized-Zirconia (YSZ), a material with low thermal conductivity, is commonly used as the top coat layer to provide the thermal barrier effect. In this dissertation the thermo-physical properties of a variety of TBCs samples made out of different fabrication techniques were investigated and compared. The first set of samples was fabricated using a pressing machine device to fabricate 0.5 inch diameter disk shaped YSZ-Al2O3 samples. The YSZ-Al2O3 powder mixture was made of 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 and …

Child Acquisition Of Referring Expressions, Carlton M. Downey Jan 2010

Child Acquisition Of Referring Expressions, Carlton M. Downey

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Children, like adults, use referring expressions to refer to specific objects, events, or people. Research has provided insights into how children use referring expressions and the appearance of forms developmentally (Radford, 1990; Abu-Akel, et al., 2004; Pine & Lieven, 1997). This study examined how three, four, and five year-old children use referring expressions across increasingly more decontextualized tasks as defined by the Situational-Discourse-Semantic (SDS) Model (Norris & Hoffman, 1993, 2002) . The participants included 4 three-year-old, 12 four-year-old, and 20 five-year-old children. Language samples were elicited using seven tasks of increasing difficulty. The referring expressions produced for each task were …

Selecting Ell Textbooks: A Content Analysis Of Ethnicity Depicted In Illustrations And Writing, Jeffrey Labelle Jan 2010

Selecting Ell Textbooks: A Content Analysis Of Ethnicity Depicted In Illustrations And Writing, Jeffrey Labelle

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

In an effort to respond to the need for culturally appropriate English Language Learning(ELL) resources for adolescent immigrants, the researchers gathered 64 textbooks actually in use in eight Milwaukee middle schools to analyze their content for the range of diversity of ethnicity depicted in illustrations and written text. The eight school settings selected provided a broad range of materials to analyze. In addition, these materials reflect both public and Catholic teachers’ resource selection in predominantly Latino and Southeast Asian American classroom contexts. The settings were chosen with the advice of administrators and teachers as schools they perceived to be of …

Are We “Reading The World”? A Review Of Multicultural Literature On Globalization, Melissa L. Gibson Jan 2010

Are We “Reading The World”? A Review Of Multicultural Literature On Globalization, Melissa L. Gibson

College of Education Faculty Research and Publications

Given its commitment to “reading” the social context, how is multicultural education accounting for the shifting context of our globalized world? A conceptual review of multicultural journals reveals limited engagement. However, a more sustained analysis could fuel re-articulations and contestations of the purpose of education in the 21st century.

Injury-Induced Hand Dominance Transfer, Kathleen E. Yancosek Jan 2010

Injury-Induced Hand Dominance Transfer, Kathleen E. Yancosek

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Hand dominance is the preferential use of one hand over the other for motor tasks. 90% of people are right-hand dominant, and the majority of injuries (acute and cumulative trauma) occur to the dominant limb, creating a double-impact injury whereby a person is left in a functional state of single-handedness and must rely on the less-dexterous, non-dominant hand. When loss of dominant hand function is permanent, a forced shift of dominance is termed injury-induced hand dominance transfer (I-IHDT).

Military service members injured in combat operation may face I-IHDT following mutilating injuries (crush, avulsion, burn and blast wounds) that result in …

Artisanal Whaling In The Atlantic: A Comparative Study Of Culture, Conflict, And Conservation In St. Vincent And The Faroe Islands, Russell Fielding Jan 2010

Artisanal Whaling In The Atlantic: A Comparative Study Of Culture, Conflict, And Conservation In St. Vincent And The Faroe Islands, Russell Fielding

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Whalers from the Caribbean island of St. Vincent and the North Atlantic archipelago of the Faroe Islands hunt pilot whales and a variety of other small cetaceans for food. Vincentian whalers use harpoons, thrown by hand or fired from a modified shotgun mounted on the boat. Faroese whalers, using several dozen boats, work cooperatively to drive an entire pod of whales ashore, where shore-based whalers are waiting to complete the kill with traditional whaling knives. Vincentian whaling traces its origins to the late nineteenth century. Records of Faroese whaling date to the late sixteenth century but the practice is thought …

Quality Analysis In Flexible Manufacturing Systems With Batch Productions, Junwen Wang Jan 2010

Quality Analysis In Flexible Manufacturing Systems With Batch Productions, Junwen Wang

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

To improve product quality and reduce cost, batch production is often implemented in many exible manufacturing systems. However, the current literature does not provide any method to analyze the quality performance in a flexible manufacturing system with batch production.

In this research, we present an analytical method with closed-form formula to evaluate the quality performance in such systems. Based on the model, we discover and investigate monotonic and non-monotonic properties in quality to provide practical guidance for operation management. To improve product quality, we introduce the notions of quality improvability with respect to product sequencing. In addition, we develop the …

Pliny's Defense Of Empire, Thomas Raymond Laehn Jan 2010

Pliny's Defense Of Empire, Thomas Raymond Laehn

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Despite perennial interest in Pliny the Elder’s Natural History as a record of the prodigious, the quotidian, and the useful in Rome in the first century AD, for over half of a millennium Pliny has been considered little more than an inept compiler of facts and marvels intellectually incapable of formulating a cogent argument supported through the selective marshalling of his materials. It is my contention that Pliny’s encyclopedic text is in fact a first-rate work of political philosophy constituting an apology for Roman imperial expansion grounded in a sophisticated conception of man as the only being capable of passing …

Validity Of Delone And Mclean's Model Of Information Systems Success At The Web Site Level Of Analysis, Begoña Pérez-Mira Jan 2010

Validity Of Delone And Mclean's Model Of Information Systems Success At The Web Site Level Of Analysis, Begoña Pérez-Mira

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The DeLone and McLean Model of Information Systems (IS) Success is one of the most cited and commonly-used models in the IS literature. Generally, the model has been used mainly to explain IS success at the individual level of analysis. However, in rare occasions it has been utilized on its entirety to measure success at the organizational level of analysis. In this study, the DeLone and McLean Model of IS Success is applied at the organizational level of analysis in the E-commerce environment. We gather website features from 448 top retailers, categorize them following DeLone and McLean’s taxonomy, and introduce …

An Anxiety Of Authenticity? Fusion Musics And Tunisian Identity, Rachel R. Colwell Jan 2010

An Anxiety Of Authenticity? Fusion Musics And Tunisian Identity, Rachel R. Colwell

Honors Papers

The analytical trope of "hybridity" has a troubled past in the social sciences. The careless adoption of scientific terminology without adaptation to cultural contexts can result in dangerous consequences for ethnomusicology. This paper challenges, and ultimately accepts, the efficacy of "hybridity" as a model for musical contact. Mindful of essentialization, post-colonial situations, and the perils of over-generalization, ethnomusicology holds sophisticated tools for examining local understandings of hybridity and the role that fusions play in shaping identities. Approaching musics from internal perspectives returns agency to musicians and listeners, liberating the local experience from the cloaking paradigm of "hybridity" as a strict …

Power To Choose?: An Analysis Of The Implications Of Gardasil For Immigrant Women, Olimpia Lee Pizzardi Jan 2010

Power To Choose?: An Analysis Of The Implications Of Gardasil For Immigrant Women, Olimpia Lee Pizzardi

Honors Papers

When the HPV vaccine, Gardasil, first entered the U.S. market in 2006, its groundbreaking promise to prevent cervical cancer and its status as a costly, gender-specific drug captured the nation's attention. Two years later, the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) began to require the HPV vaccine from immigrant women and girls as part of the naturalization process. In stark contrast to the journalistic stir that Gardasil provoked, the new immigration requirement went unnoticed until the National Coalition for Immigrant Women's Rights (NCIW) called it to attention. I examine the discursive practices and sociohistorical contexts that enabled the problematic …

Large Cardinals, Oliver Pechenik Jan 2010

Large Cardinals, Oliver Pechenik

Honors Papers

Infinite sets are a fundamental object of modern mathematics. Surprisingly, the existence of infinite sets cannot be proven within mathematics. Their existence, or even the consistency of their possible existence, must be justified extra-mathematically or taken as an article of faith. We describe here several varieties of large infinite set that have a similar status in mathematics to that of infinite sets, i.e. their existence cannot be proven, but they seem both reasonable and useful. These large sets are known as large cardinals. We focus on two types of large cardinal: inaccessible cardinals and measurable cardinals. Assuming the existence of …

Habermas And The Feminist Engagement With Communicative Ethics: Solidarity And Utopian Interests As A Corrective To Normative Political Problematics, Taine Duncan Jan 2010

Habermas And The Feminist Engagement With Communicative Ethics: Solidarity And Utopian Interests As A Corrective To Normative Political Problematics, Taine Duncan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

My dissertation subjects Habermas to a critique inspired by ethical and political feminist philosophy. Whereas Habermas believes particularized political interests are foundational for communicative ethics, neo-Marxist feminists argue that he makes naïve assumptions about the separation of public from private interests. Habermas, on one hand, sees communication as politically oriented dialectics that culminates in rational consensus and normative guidelines. Seyla Benhabib, on the other hand, claim that Habermas' notion of consensus is obtained through false dialectical syntheses. In her view, Habermas cannot preserve the utopian goals cherished by diverse and marginalized members of society. Benhabib thus attempts to reconcile contemporary …

Perelman's Theory Of Argumentation And Natural Law, Francis J. Mootz Iii Jan 2010

Perelman's Theory Of Argumentation And Natural Law, Francis J. Mootz Iii

Scholarly Works

Chaim Perelman resuscitated the rhetorical tradition by developing an elegant and detailed theory of argumentation. Rejecting the single-minded Cartesian focus on rational truth, Perelman recovered the ancient wisdom that we can argue reasonably about matters that admit only of probability. From this one would conclude that Perelman’s argumentation theory is inalterably opposed to natural law, and therefore that I would have done better to have written an article titled “Perelman’s Th eory of Argumentation as a Rejection of Natural Law.”

However, my thesis is precisely that Perelman’s theory of argumentation connects to the natural law tradition in interesting and productive …
