The Relationship Between Timed Drill Practice And The Increase Of Automaticity Of Basic Multiplication Facts For Regular Education Sixth Graders, Nelly P. Knowles Jan 2010

The Relationship Between Timed Drill Practice And The Increase Of Automaticity Of Basic Multiplication Facts For Regular Education Sixth Graders, Nelly P. Knowles

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

By the time students transition from elementary to middle school, many do not demonstrate mastery of recalling basic math facts. This 8-week quasi-experimental quantitative study, based in cognitive development and theories of the construction of memory, used a 3-level independent variable experimental design to determine if there was a relationship between teachers' implementation of timed drill practices and the students' level of automaticity with regard to basic multiplication facts in 9 sixth-grade, regular education math classes. The control group received no intervention, the first treatment group received weekly timed drill practice for 3 minutes, and a second treatment group received …

Traditional Place And Feminist Space The Japanese Tea Ceremony Makes Room For Empowerment, Morgan Boecher Jan 2010

Traditional Place And Feminist Space The Japanese Tea Ceremony Makes Room For Empowerment, Morgan Boecher

Theses & ETDs

This thesis examines the tradition of the Japanese tea ceremony as a place for feminist empowerment. I use participant observation and interviews in order to show how this feminine practice can enable women to build their own projects as agents. Tokyo and Kawaguchi, Japan are important sites for the creation and reproduction of traditional and contemporary meaning. The tea ceremony practices of those cities exist within a globalized landscape that adopts binary interpretations that contrast East from West, traditional from modern, and feminine from masculine. This thesis investigates how women doing tea ceremony within this matrix become agents defining their …

Is A Communication Event Stressful For Individuals With Expressive Aphasia?, Emily E. Warner

Master's Theses and Capstones

Objective. This study presents an effort to understand both stress perception and physiologic responses related to expressive communication in individuals with expressive aphasia, acquired as the result of a stroke.

Method. Eight individuals with aphasia and five age-matched, healthy controls participated in a public communication task. Salivary cortisol and perception of stress and mood was measured on one day at home as well as during the ordering task.

Results. A significant difference between groups was found in diurnal cortisol levels in the evening, as well as a non-significant trend in the afternoon measure. Individuals in the aphasia group perceived higher …

Oral Language Milestone Acquisition In Children Adopted From China, Hannah Harwood Jan 2010

Oral Language Milestone Acquisition In Children Adopted From China, Hannah Harwood

Master's Theses and Capstones

This study contains language milestone acquisition information for 14 children adopted from China between 8 and 12 months of age. A retrospective questionnaire was utilized to gain information regarding the specific ages at which these adoptees demonstrated an understanding of English along with the ages where they demonstrated proficient usage of English. Parent responses indicated that these adoptees developed English language milestones comparable to their monolingual peers, for both age of acquisition and order of acquisition. This research adds to the literature on what may be expected regarding language development in children adopted from China prior to one year of …

The Colonizing Impulse Of Postcolonial Theory, John C. Hawley Jan 2010

The Colonizing Impulse Of Postcolonial Theory, John C. Hawley

English

What some see as the ongoing collapse of English as a discrete discipline has been hastened along by postcolonial studies, but many have argued that this deconstruction has been true from the start, that literary studies in general "has speculated continually about the intellectual foundations within which its key questions are framed and which make it possible, and how things might be otherwise" (Moran 46). Robert Miklitsch for example, suggests that "literature . . . was once implicitly interdisciplinary, encompassing, as Hazlitt indicates, science as well as philosophy" (Miklitsch et al. 258). Nonetheless, writes David Glover, "whatever criteria one uses …

The Past, Presence, And Future Of Legal Writing Scholarship: Rhetoric, Voice, And Community, Linda L. Berger, Linda H. Edwards, Terrill Pollman

Scholarly Works

This article welcomes a new generation of legal writing scholars. In the first generation, legal writing professors debated whether they should be engaged in legal scholarship at all. In the second generation, assuming that they should be engaged in scholarship, legal writing professors discerned and defined different genres of and topics for the scholarship in which some or all of us were or should be engaged. In this article, we map the contours of a third generation of legal writing scholarship - one that integrates the elements of our professional lives and allows us to engage more effectively with our …

Ugly American Hermeneutics, Francis J. Mootz Iii Jan 2010

Ugly American Hermeneutics, Francis J. Mootz Iii

Scholarly Works

This article will appear in a Symposium on comparative legal hermeneutics that includes four articles by American scholars and four articles by Brazilian scholars. I argue that the "ugly American" hermeneutics exemplified in Justice Scalia's opinion in District of Columbia v. Heller is unfortunate, even if we supplement Justice Scalia's hermeneutical fantasy with the much more careful and balanced philosophical work by Larry Solum, Keith Whittington and other scholars. Nevertheless, the pragmatic work of interpretation by lawyers and judges in the day-to-day world of legal practice shows a plain-faced integrity of which we Americans can be proud.

Argument Constructions And Language Processing: Evidence From A Priming Experiment And Pedagogical Implications, David Eddington, Francisco Ruiz De Mendoza Jan 2010

Argument Constructions And Language Processing: Evidence From A Priming Experiment And Pedagogical Implications, David Eddington, Francisco Ruiz De Mendoza

Faculty Publications

The notion of argument construction is widely accepted in Cognitive Linguistics circles as a highly explanatory theoretical construct. It has recently been incorporated into the Lexical-Constructional Model (LCM; Ruiz de Mendoza and Mairal 2007, 2008), a theoretical approach to meaning construction that integrates argument constructions into a broader model that incorporates meaning dimensions traditionally dealt with in the domain of pragmatics and discourse analysis. The LCM has an argument level of description, in the form of constructional templates, which are in general equivalent to the argument constructions postulated in Goldberg’s (1995, 2006) Construction Grammar, although there are crucial differences in …

Hispanic Ministry Where Language Is No Barrier: Church Growth Among U.S.-Born, English-Dominant Latinos, Daniel Rodriguez Jan 2010

Hispanic Ministry Where Language Is No Barrier: Church Growth Among U.S.-Born, English-Dominant Latinos, Daniel Rodriguez

Great Commission Research Journal

During the past one hundred fifty years of mission and ministry among Latinos in the United States, most denominational and local church leaders have assumed a “Spanish-speaking immigrant-church model.” This model still dominates the landscape of Hispanic ministries among evangelicals in the United States. Unfortunately, this model is generally not successful when targeting U.S.-born English-dominant Latinos. This study explores how linguistic, cultural and social-economic factors have re-shaped ministry paradigms and practices in several churches across the country that traditionally targeted foreign-born Spanish-dominant Latinos but now also successfully target U.S.-born English-dominant Latinos.

Sequential Incoherence In A Multi-Party Synchronous Computer Mediated Communication For An Introductory Health Informatics Course, Jorge R Herskovic, J Caleb Goodwin, Pamela A Bozzo Silva, Irmgard Willcockson, Amy Franklin

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Online courses will play a key role in the high-volume Informatics education required to train the personnel that will be necessary to fulfill the health IT needs of the country. Online courses can cause feelings of isolation in students. A common way to address these feelings is to hold synchronous online "chats" for students. Conventional chats, however, can be confusing and impose a high extrinsic cognitive load on their participants that hinders the learning process. In this paper we present a qualitative analysis that shows the causes of this high cognitive load and our solution through the use of a …

Individuals And Community, Discipline Building And Disciplinary Values: The First Twenty-Five Years Of The Legal Writing Institute, Chris Rideout Jan 2010

Individuals And Community, Discipline Building And Disciplinary Values: The First Twenty-Five Years Of The Legal Writing Institute, Chris Rideout

Faculty Articles

In this article Professor Rideout is the speaker at the Luncheon Speech during the Symposium “The Legal Writing Institute: Celebrating 25 Years of Teaching & Scholarship”. Professor Rideout examines what the faculty and community in legal writing has been doing in the last twenty-five years that renders legal writing a discipline. Professor Rideout explains that in their work in legal writing, along with creating a community, faculty are also creating a discipline—one that has its own practices and that has its own embedded epistemologies, ideologies, and values. The underlying values constitute the legal writing community as a discipline—of legal writing—one …

The Study Of Secularism And Religion In The Constitution And Contemporary Politics Of Turkey: The Rise Of Interdisciplinarity And The Decline Of Methodology?, Russell Powell Jan 2010

The Study Of Secularism And Religion In The Constitution And Contemporary Politics Of Turkey: The Rise Of Interdisciplinarity And The Decline Of Methodology?, Russell Powell

Faculty Articles

Using the experience of Islamist parties in Turkey as a comparative example, this article explores whether political parties with deeply held religious ideologies can integrate themselves into liberal democracies, paying particular attention to the nature and role of legal secularism (the mechanism states use to insulate themselves from religious influence). This is an extension of the query whether the rise of illiberal political groups eventually leads to the end of liberal society. These queries engage the assumption that illiberal religious ideology is incapable of tolerating dissent or pluralism. This article examines Turkish constitutional secularism as well as the “Islamist” Justice …

Family Experiences With Accessing Information, Social, And Resource Supports As Participants In Services For Their Special Needs Child Over Three Years Of Age, Joannie Busillo-Aguayo Jan 2010

Family Experiences With Accessing Information, Social, And Resource Supports As Participants In Services For Their Special Needs Child Over Three Years Of Age, Joannie Busillo-Aguayo

Theses and Dissertations

Families of children with special needs often experience substantial stress and an increased need for informational, social, or resource support throughout their child's growth and development. However, supports for families of children older than three often report a severe shortage of supports and difficulty accessing and utilizing them. Using purposive sampling techniques, this phenomenological and mixed methods study recruited 6 mothers of children over the age of 3 years diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder to participate in a single 2-hour focus group. Qualitative data was collected using open-ended and semi-structured questions to gain a deeper understanding of parent's lived experiences …

Examining The Appropriateness Of Nonverbal Measures Of Intelligence With Deaf And Hard-Of-Hearing Children: A Critical Review Of The Literature, Martha S. Cook Klassen

Theses and Dissertations

There are a variety of assessment instruments available today that are widely used to assess the intellectual abilities of children. Specific considerations should be made when using these instruments to assess the deaf and hard-of-hearing population. This critical review of the literature begins with a brief overview of the D-HH population, a general history of intellectual assessment, and assessment considerations that are specific to the D-HH population. Information obtained from available literature regarding the internal consistency of six assessment instruments is presented. The instruments reviewed include the UNIT, the Leiter-R, the WISC-IV, the SB5, the CTONI, and the CAS. The …

Making Waves With Critical Literacy: A Teacher Researcher Study Around The Texts, Contexts, And Recontextualizations Of An Upper Middle Class Public High School, Carolyn Fortuna

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation is a teacher researcher qualitative study that explores the work of critical literacy in an upper middle class public high school. As a participant and an observer, I studied how a confluence of authority, privilege, curriculum, and pedagogy created context and shaped the meaning and quality of our collective literacy learning experiences. Using the tools of teacher research through narrative inquiry, my study traces school authority figures' reproduction of dominant ideologies, my struggles as a social justice educator to break through those definitions of "normal" with a privileged student population, and the hope that resulted when my students …

The Drift: Rethinking The Affective Dynamics Of Adaptation, John Hodgkins Jan 2010

The Drift: Rethinking The Affective Dynamics Of Adaptation, John Hodgkins

Open Access Dissertations

The Drift effects a deeper understanding of the dynamic relationship between literature and cinema by articulating an "affective turn" for adaptation studies, a field whose traditional focus has been the critical castigation of filmic adaptations based on canonical plays or novels. Specifically, this project draws on theorists such as Gilles Deleuze, Brian Massumi, and Marco Abel to re-conceive literary and cinematic texts as spatio-temporal engines generating and disseminating affect, and the adaptive process as a drifting of those intensities from one medium to another. By conceptualizing adaptation in this manner, this study steers clear of the chimerical notion of fidelity …

Literacy Coaching: The Role Of Reflective Thought In Teacher Decision Making, Patricia Jane May Jan 2010

Literacy Coaching: The Role Of Reflective Thought In Teacher Decision Making, Patricia Jane May

Open Access Dissertations

Qualitative studies of classroom teachers involved in literacy coaching are crucial to provide direction for future literacy coaching practice and research. Using a grounded theory design, this study examined the experience of four elementary level classroom teachers and one coach as they engaged in a year-long literacy coaching program. Teachers were observed throughout the literacy coaching cycle including: pre and post conferences, demonstrations and teacher implementation of new instructional practices. Analysis of coach/teacher interactions highlighted the role of reflective thought in teacher learning, and positioned reflective thought as a foundational premise of teacher learning. In addition, as a result of …

The Syntax Of Temporal Interpretation In Embedded Clauses, Gustavo Ariel Guajardo Jan 2010

The Syntax Of Temporal Interpretation In Embedded Clauses, Gustavo Ariel Guajardo

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

In this thesis I argue that verbs in embedded clauses are temporally interpreted by being bound to the temporal arguments of AspP and VP in the matrix clause. I build up this claim by proposing that (i) Reichenbach’s relation of association can be expressed in terms of Binding Theory in the syntax, (ii) Tense is subject to different binding principles depending on its syntactic realization so that T in main clauses must be free (i.e., subject to Principle B) but in embedded clauses T must be bound (i.e., subject to Principle A), (iii) the Spanish present subjunctive is a tenseless …

Allomorphic Variation Of Definite Articles In Jersey: A Sonority Based Account, Miranda Kelly Mccarvel Jan 2010

Allomorphic Variation Of Definite Articles In Jersey: A Sonority Based Account, Miranda Kelly Mccarvel

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Allomorphic variation is a common linguistic phenomenon in Jersey (Jersey Norman French). Definite articles in Jersey each have at least two allomorphs. The occurrence of each allomorph has been attributed to the composition of word initial syllable following the article (Liddicoat 1994). Instead of using a ruled-based approach, this thesis examines the variation found among Jersey definite articles and uses sonority-based principles to analyze the allomorphic variation. Using Jersey phonotactics, this thesis first puts forth a Jersey specific sonority hierarchy and then utilizes that hierarchy and principles of syllabification to syllabify phrases containing definite articles. Then using sonority based principles, …

Anna Nicole Smith Goes Shopping: The New Forum-Shopping Problem In Bankruptcy, G. Marcus Cole, Todd J. Zywicki Jan 2010

Anna Nicole Smith Goes Shopping: The New Forum-Shopping Problem In Bankruptcy, G. Marcus Cole, Todd J. Zywicki

Utah Law Review

In the United States, relations between debtors and their creditors are governed by two distinct legal regimes. For the overwhelming majority of credit relationships, state law of contract, property, tort, and consumer protection set up the framework within which the debtor-creditor relationship is established, functions, and in the end, is dissolved. In a smaller but significant number of these relationships, a different forum orchestrates the end of these relationships, namely, federal bankruptcy court. These two distinct forums for debtor-creditor relations coexist side by side, with some disputes moving over time from one forum to the other. As with any system …

Towards A Jurisprudence Of Hybridity, Paul Schiff Gedicks Jan 2010

Towards A Jurisprudence Of Hybridity, Paul Schiff Gedicks

Utah Law Review

Debates about non-state normative communities often devolve into clashes between two polarized positions. On the one hand, we see the desire to eradicate difference through forced obeisance to a single overarching state norm. On the other, we see claims of complete autonomy for non-state lawmaking, as if such non-state communities could plausibly exist in isolation from the communities that both surround and intersect them.

Design Practices Business Organizations Employ To Deliver Virtual Classroom Training, Rebecca L. Adams Jan 2010

Design Practices Business Organizations Employ To Deliver Virtual Classroom Training, Rebecca L. Adams

Graduate Research Papers

The purpose of the literature review is to investigate what instructional design practices organizations employ to deliver virtual classroom training to their workforces. The review examines why companies are implementing virtual classrooms, positive and negative elements of implementing, instructional design strategies companies use to deliver effective virtual training and how learners perceive virtual classroom training compared to traditional face-to-face settings. Best practice with research shows that the most critical factors in successful virtual classroom training are engaging learners, using the software technology effectively, applying instruction design practices and accurately evaluating learner perception. By understanding the best practices, instructional designers can …

The Question Is The Answer : Making The Language Arts Classroom Meaningful With Essential Questions And Student-Driven Inquiry, Ashley A. Jorgensen Jan 2010

The Question Is The Answer : Making The Language Arts Classroom Meaningful With Essential Questions And Student-Driven Inquiry, Ashley A. Jorgensen

Graduate Research Papers

Coalition research scholar, Grant Wiggins, firmly believes the idea of a question-driven, inquiry approach to teaching and learning should be at the heart of a school's mission. In examining one of the chief questions of a school's mission, that is, 'What are the aims of a high school curriculum,' Wiggins says it must involve getting students to "use their minds well" (Cushman, 1989). Wiggins says that, "students should emerge from their high school career with an integrated vision of how to think within the culture, which implies a broad understanding, not just narrow or rote expertise" (Cushman, 1989). In order …

Differentiating Instruction In The High School Science Classroom: Instructional Accommodations For Students With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, English Language Learners, And Gifted Learners, Nicole M. Kesselring Jan 2010

Differentiating Instruction In The High School Science Classroom: Instructional Accommodations For Students With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, English Language Learners, And Gifted Learners, Nicole M. Kesselring

Graduate Research Papers

Students in today's classrooms come from many different backgrounds and have many different educational needs and learning styles. Today's education emphasizes inclusion of students with learning disabilities and a reduction of out-of-class services for gifted learners. Working to meet the needs of the broad spectrum of students is a big challenge for many of today's science teachers. Indications are that most teachers are making few proactive modifications based on learner variance. Inclusion of students with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and English Language Learners (ELL) in science classrooms along with gifted learners calls for a need of differentiated or academically responsive instruction. …

Waging Word Wars: A Discourse Analysis Of The Patterns Of Norse Masculinity Presented Through Mannjafnaor In The Icelandic Sagas, Jonathan Mark Broussard Jan 2010

Waging Word Wars: A Discourse Analysis Of The Patterns Of Norse Masculinity Presented Through Mannjafnaor In The Icelandic Sagas, Jonathan Mark Broussard

LSU Master's Theses

The mannjafnaðr is a verbal dueling competition containing boasts and insults through which Norse men compare their achievements and exploits against those of other men in bids to prove themselves more honorable in the eyes of the Norse community. This thesis examines the structure, content, and themes of the mannjafnaðr presented in the Morkinskinna, Magnussona, Brennu-Njals, and the Orvar-Oddr sagas as manifestations of the Norse conception of masculinity. My analysis reveals that these encounters are highly structured and provide interactants opportunities to evaluate adherence to culturally dictated strictures of honor – their own and their opponents’. Through a complex discourse …

The Perception And Production Of Spanish Pure Vowels By Native English Speakers, Lauren Erickson Jan 2010

The Perception And Production Of Spanish Pure Vowels By Native English Speakers, Lauren Erickson

Honors Program Theses

Quantitatively measuring a person’s fluency in a second language (L2) is difficult, but analysis of formant movements during vowel production may provide a more accurate way of measuring the accuracy of acquiring a native-like production of the L2. This study examined the accuracy with which two groups of native English speakers perceived and produced the Spanish vowel /e/ and diphthong /ei/, and compared their results with the results from a group of native Spanish speakers. For the perception portion of the study, participants were asked to correctly identify matching sounds, and the number and percentage of correct responses were compared …
