A Study Of The Effects Of Peaceable Schools Curricula On Student Achievement In An Urban Middle School, David Nurenberg Jan 2010

A Study Of The Effects Of Peaceable Schools Curricula On Student Achievement In An Urban Middle School, David Nurenberg

Educational Studies Dissertations

Given that a review of the available literature suggests links between the problems of school safety (both physical and emotional) and low student achievement, effective school reform needs to address both issues simultaneously. Most education reformers, though doubtless concerned about safety, have, in the wake of the outcomes-based movement in American education, focused mainly on raising student test scores through increasingly standardizing school structures. As well intentioned as outcomes-based reformers may be, they are only seeing part of the puzzle of student achievement. There exists a wealth of programs and curricula that have been shown through research to reduce school …

A Discourse Analysis Of The Periphrastic Imperfect In The Greek New Testament Writings Of Luke, Carl E. Johnson Jan 2010

A Discourse Analysis Of The Periphrastic Imperfect In The Greek New Testament Writings Of Luke, Carl E. Johnson

Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive

Motivated by Bloomfield's belief that linguistic variation is not without motivation, this paper seeks to determine the distinction between the morphological imperfect and periphrastic imperfect of Koine Greek within the New Testament writings of Luke. This study suggests that: 1. The periphrastic imperfect occurs only within narrative sections of the New Testament and is most prominent in the writings of Luke.2. The number of periphrastic imperfects has been recently over reported.3. The periphrastic imperfect is a more marked form of Koine Greek which developed in accordance with general rules of grammaticalization.4. The discourse function of periphrastic imperfects has not been previously …

A Revised Phonology Of Kabiye Segments And Tone, Cecile Mamalinani Padayodi Jan 2010

A Revised Phonology Of Kabiye Segments And Tone, Cecile Mamalinani Padayodi

Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive

This study suggests revisions to the segmental and tonal phonology of Kabiye following a reanalysis of consonants, vowels, and tones in the speech of 7 male native speakers. Acoustic investigations are also included to illustrate some phonetic aspects of segments and tone. Data were elicited through three speech styles - wordlists, short phrases, and storytelling - later transcribed and analyzed. Revisions are made to the phonetic and phonemic inventories of consonants and vowels, as well as to the inventories of the underlying tonal melodies on noun roots, verb roots, and noun suffixes, as indicated by the results of the current …

The Translator's Assistant: A Multilingual Natural Language Generator Based On Linguistic Universals, Typologies, And Primitives, Tod Jay Allman

Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive

The Translator's Assistant (TTA) is a multilingual natural language generator (NLG) designed to produce initial drafts of translations of texts in a wide variety of target languages. The four primary components of every NLG system of this type are 1) the ontology, 2) the semantic representations, 3) the transfer grammar, and 4) the synthesizing grammar. This system's ontology was developed using the foundational principles of Natural Semantic Metalanguage theory. TTA's semantic representations are comprised of a controlled, English influenced metalanguage augmented by a feature system which was designed to accommodate a very wide variety of target languages. TTA's transfer grammar …

Faculty Development In Higher Education: Long-Term Impact Of A Summer Teaching And Learning Workshop, Diane C. Persellin, Terry Goodrick

Music Faculty Research

Past participants of the Associated Colleges of the South Summer Teaching and Learning Workshop were surveyed to determine long-term impact of this type of professional development experience. Results indicate a large majority of participants across rank and academic discipline continued to view the workshop as effective and valued feedback from the perspective of the learner. Females were more likely than males to report more awareness and thoughtfulness about their teaching since having attended the workshop and to report having tried new strategies and taken more risks in their teaching. This study supports the importance of an interdisciplinary forum for faculty …

Assessment Strategies: Tools That Support Nonverbal Students, With Multiple Disabilities, Acquiring Literacy Skills, Jamie Creeden

Education Masters

The purpose of this study was to determine effective instructional tools that teachers can utilize to help plan instruction so that nonverbal students with multiple disabilities can acquire literacy skills in the classroom. One student, Trinity, who is nonverbal and has been diagnosed with Chiari malformation, was assessed using a variety of formal (Peabody Nonverbal Picture Vocabulary Assessment (Form A)), and informal assessment tools (interviews and teacher-made literacy assessments) to determine what literacy skills she possesses. The findings suggest that Trinity possesses a variety of receptive and expressive literacy skills typical of other children her age. Teachers just need the …

PCOM Psychology Dissertations

Social skill deficits are hallmark characteristics noted in children with autism. The behavioral indicators of autism, including language impairments, display of preservative behaviors, and restricted interests contribute to the social difficulties experienced by children with autism. The current paper provides a review of the relevant literature on theoretical contributions to social skill deficits in autism. A review of the use of cognitive behavioral therapy and social skill training programs and curriculums that have been shown to be efficacious at targeting deficits and improving social skills is provided, with a focus on treating children with high functioning autism (HFA) and Asperger’s …

Themistius On Concept Acquisition And Knowledge Of Essences, Myrna Gabbe Jan 2010

Themistius On Concept Acquisition And Knowledge Of Essences, Myrna Gabbe

Philosophy Faculty Publications

Themistius's (ca. 317-ca. 388 C.E.) paraphrase of the De Anima is an influential and important work; however, it is not now regarded as profound or original and thereby sutTers from neglect. I argue that Themistius is misunderstood on the matter of Aristotle's productive and potential intellects. It is commonly held that Themistius gives to the productive intellect the role of illuminating images in order to produce universal thoughts In the potential intellect with epistemic certainty. I argue that Themistius's productive intellect does not transform images to reveal the forms contained therein, but gives to the potential intellect the ability, first, …

Gender, Human Security And The United Nations: Security Language As A Political Framework For Women, Natalie Florea Hudson Jan 2010

Gender, Human Security And The United Nations: Security Language As A Political Framework For Women, Natalie Florea Hudson

Political Science Faculty Publications

This book examines the relationship between women, gender and the international security agenda, exploring the meaning of security in terms of discourse and practice, as well as the larger goals and strategies of the global women's movement.

Today, many complex global problems are being located within the security logic. From the environment to HIV/AIDS, state and non-state actors have made a practice out of securitizing issues that are not conventionally seen as such. As most prominently demonstrated by the UN Security Council Resolution 1325 (2001), activists for women's rights have increasingly framed women's rights and gender inequality as security issues …

Feminism, Cultural Violence Of, Danielle Poe Jan 2010

Feminism, Cultural Violence Of, Danielle Poe

Philosophy Faculty Publications

For most, if not all, self-defined feminists, feminism means support for equality between women and men. The difficulty with this definition, though, is determining what one means by "equality," by "women and men," and by "sex" and "gender." For some feminists, equality requires that differences between women and men be acknowledged and valued. For other feminists, equality means that the category "human" encompasses women and men and that the differences within a sex are greater than differences between the sexes.

Feminists also differ on what they mean by "women" and "men"; these terms can be defined biologically, genetically, culturally, religiously, …

Portrayal Of Women And Clothing In Domestic Housework Commercials, Julie Brady Ramaccia Jan 2010

Portrayal Of Women And Clothing In Domestic Housework Commercials, Julie Brady Ramaccia

Joyce Durham Essay Contest in Women's and Gender Studies

5✸`‰©5❷O";">There are over 90 million televisions in the United States, serving roughly 98% of the United States’ population. An average American will watch 30,000 commercials in a year, which results in a total of over 2,000,000 commercials in a lifetime (Allan and Coltrane, 1996; Bretl and Cantor, 1988). An American will end up spending about three years of his or her life watching commercials (Kilbourne, 2001). Since the media and particularly commercials are so pervasive in American society, it is imperative that the effects of this advertising be studied and understood. It is also important to analyze the clothing …

Enterprise Business Alignment Using Quality Function Deployment, Multivariate Data Analysis And Business Modeling Tools, Diala Gammoh Jan 2010

Enterprise Business Alignment Using Quality Function Deployment, Multivariate Data Analysis And Business Modeling Tools, Diala Gammoh

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation proposes two novel ideas to enhance the business strategy alignment to customer needs. The proposed business alignment clock is a new illustration to the relationships between customer requirements, business strategies, capabilities and processes. To line up the clock and reach the needed alignment for the enterprise, a proposed clock mechanism is introduced. The mechanism integrates the Enterprise Business Architecture (EBA) with the House of Quality (HoQ). The relationship matrix inside the body of the house is defined using multivariate data analysis techniques to accurately measure the strength of the relationships rather than defining them subjectively. A statistical tool, …

Episodic Memory Model For Embodied Conversational Agents, Miguel Elvir Jan 2010

Episodic Memory Model For Embodied Conversational Agents, Miguel Elvir

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Embodied Conversational Agents (ECA) form part of a range of virtual characters whose intended purpose include engaging in natural conversations with human users. While works in literature are ripe with descriptions of attempts at producing viable ECA architectures, few authors have addressed the role of episodic memory models in conversational agents. This form of memory, which provides a sense of autobiographic record-keeping in humans, has only recently been peripherally integrated into dialog management tools for ECAs. In our work, we propose to take a closer look at the shared characteristics of episodic memory models in recent examples from the field. …

Citizenship Privilege Or The Right To Religious Freedom: The Blackmailing Of France's Islamic Women, Yael Barbibay Jan 2010

Citizenship Privilege Or The Right To Religious Freedom: The Blackmailing Of France's Islamic Women, Yael Barbibay

Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law

The note examines the tension between France's commitment to laïcité and the rights of Islamic immigrants, particularly women, to religious freedom and cultural identity. It critiques the denial of citizenship to Faiza Mabchour, arguing that such decisions reflect a broader effort to suppress Islamic practices and undermine pluralism. The analysis contends that France's rigid application of laïcité violates international human rights norms, particularly the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR). The article advocates for a more inclusive approach to citizenship that balances secularism with religious freedom and cultural diversity.

Federalism At The Cathedral: Property Rules, Liability Rules, And Inalienability Rules In Tenth Amendment Infrastructure, Erin Ryan Jan 2010

Federalism At The Cathedral: Property Rules, Liability Rules, And Inalienability Rules In Tenth Amendment Infrastructure, Erin Ryan

University of Colorado Law Review

This Article explores the consequences for good governance of poorly constructed legal infrastructure in the Tenth Amendment context, and recommends a simple jurisprudential fix: exchanging a property rule for the inalienability remedy rule that the Supreme Court used to protect the anticommandeering entitlement in New York v. United States. Grounded in a values-based theory of American federalism, it shows how the New York inalienability rule unnecessarily removes tools for resolving interjurisdictional quagmiresexemplified by the radioactive waste capacity problem at the heart of the New York litigation-by prohibiting novel forms of state-federal bargaining. In New York, the Court held that Congress …

Exile In The Gramola: A Jewinican (Re)Collection, Roberto Alejandro Santos Jan 2010

Exile In The Gramola: A Jewinican (Re)Collection, Roberto Alejandro Santos

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

Exile in the Gramola: A Jewinican (Re)Collection is a poetic attempt at navigating the multicultural landscapes of the ethnic hybrid. It is a collection of poetry that aims to reveal how we ourselves become acculturated in the process acculturating others, and which also aims at promoting opportunities of cross-cultural dialogue, cross-cultural negotiation, cross-cultural overstanding, and cross-cultural endorsement.

Through the themes of exile, divorce, familial separation, and the mixing of the cultural movements of hip-hop and bachata, Exile reaches beyond ideas of ethnicity and cultural norms in order to reveal the hardships we share in our only commonality--our humanity.

When Resistance Is Not Enough: The Role Of Ecotage In Radical Environmentalism, Kris R. Brown Jan 2010

When Resistance Is Not Enough: The Role Of Ecotage In Radical Environmentalism, Kris R. Brown

CMC Senior Theses

As a starting point, I've created a simple, five step argument for my view on humanity's environmental responsibility. The first four steps are premises upon which I will elaborate to some degree over the course of this paper, and the fifth step is a conclusion that should necessarily follow from the premises if they are true.

1) Humans are currently threatening the earth's viability as a habitat for living thing.

2) Humans have a duty not to threaten the earth's viability as a habitat for living things.

3) Our duty not to threaten the viability of the earth as a …

Multicultural Education: What Is It And Does It Have Benefits?, Celestial J. Zaldana Jan 2010

Multicultural Education: What Is It And Does It Have Benefits?, Celestial J. Zaldana

CMC Senior Theses

The purpose of this paper was to examine multicultural education, and clarify misconceptions about it. Particularly, those misconceptions that have resulted in House Bill 2281 ( i.e. multicultural education “promotes the overthrow of the United States government”), and the misconception that multicultural education solely involves content integration. In addition, this paper examines the possible benefits of having a multicultural education. These benefits include combating the negative effects of acculturation and assimilation, reducing prejudice and the effects of stereotypes, enhancing other-group orientation, and promoting critical analysis and empowerment.

The Effects Of Communication Disorders On Social Development, Heather M. Back

CMC Senior Theses

This paper explores literature on the effects of communication disorders on the social development of children. The paper discusses such topics as the effects of communication disorders on personality development, the ability to make friends and resolve conflict with peers, and academic success. It also discusses the influences of multiculturalism and bilingualism on the diagnosis of communication disorders and reflects on the importance of awareness of cultural differences in communication style to avoid a misdiagnosis. Research shows that without intervention and treatment communication disorders can have irreversible detrimental effects on a child’s ability to develop effect social-communication, to make friends, …

Supremacy Clause Textualism, Henry Paul Monaghan Jan 2010

Supremacy Clause Textualism, Henry Paul Monaghan

Faculty Scholarship

Whatever its status in the statutory interpretation "wars," originalism-driven textualism has assumed an increasingly prominent role in constitutional interpretation, at least within the academy. The focus of this Article is on one such form, namely, "Supremacy Clause textualism", that is, recent textualist claims about the implications of the Supremacy Clause of Article VI. This Article addresses two such claims.

First, in important articles, Professor Bradford Clark argues that the clause is "at the epicenter of [our] constitutional structure" and it "recognizes only the 'Constitution,' 'Laws,' and 'Treaties' of the United States as 'the supreme Law of the Land."' Displacement of …

The Relationship Between Timed Drill Practice And The Increase Of Automaticity Of Basic Multiplication Facts For Regular Education Sixth Graders, Nelly P. Knowles Jan 2010

The Relationship Between Timed Drill Practice And The Increase Of Automaticity Of Basic Multiplication Facts For Regular Education Sixth Graders, Nelly P. Knowles

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

By the time students transition from elementary to middle school, many do not demonstrate mastery of recalling basic math facts. This 8-week quasi-experimental quantitative study, based in cognitive development and theories of the construction of memory, used a 3-level independent variable experimental design to determine if there was a relationship between teachers' implementation of timed drill practices and the students' level of automaticity with regard to basic multiplication facts in 9 sixth-grade, regular education math classes. The control group received no intervention, the first treatment group received weekly timed drill practice for 3 minutes, and a second treatment group received …
