Articulations Of Identity Within High School Cliques: Language Choices In Boyat And Emo Filipino Youth Groups, Dalal Saleh Almubayei Jan 2010

Articulations Of Identity Within High School Cliques: Language Choices In Boyat And Emo Filipino Youth Groups, Dalal Saleh Almubayei

Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive

This dissertation adds to work exploring where language stands in the shaping of adolescent speakers' social identities, since identities emerge through discursive and social practices, and social selves are produced through interaction (Bucholtz 1999), but much of the literature studying the role of language in defining the adolescent's identity is insufficient (Fortman 2003). This study is based on data from five months of fieldwork in 2008-2009 with two distinct and stigmatized high school cliques in Kuwait. The first clique is well known for its Arabish name boyat 'lesbian tomboys'. The second clique is a combination of Emo subculture and Filipino …

Incorporation Or Symbiosis: Haitians And African Americans In Mattapan, Alix Cantave Jan 2010

Incorporation Or Symbiosis: Haitians And African Americans In Mattapan, Alix Cantave

Trotter Review

As Haitians continue to move to the United States in large numbers seeking economic opportunities and refuge from political repression and environmental degradation, their relationship with African Americans has also become more obvious. Haitians are settling in larger numbers in predominantly African American neighborhoods, and their U.S.-born children identify with African Americans and face many of the same issues as black youth in urban America. As Zéphir observed, Haitians remain an isolated group. This group centripetality greatly influences the relationship between Haitians and African Americans as well as how African Americans perceive Haitians as a group. This article examines the …

Forgotten Migrations From The United States To Hispaniola, Ryan Mann-Hamilton Jan 2010

Forgotten Migrations From The United States To Hispaniola, Ryan Mann-Hamilton

Trotter Review

At the first Hamilton family reunion, held in Samaná, Dominican Republic, in 2002, I took the opportunity to question my aunts and uncles about our family’s history and to share the story of our migration to the town with the mass of youngsters gathered for the event. Most of my cousins were amazed by the intricate details of movement, displacement, and transformation because they had never heard these stories before. The reaction that stood out came from a younger cousin brought up in Brooklyn. With a disconcerted look, he asked innocently, “So we’re black?” It had never dawned upon him, …

The article discusses the unique features of the ECCC's co-counsel, investigators, victim participation, detention, fitness requirements, …

Writing Spaces: Readings On Writing, Volume 1, Charles Lowe, Pavel Zemliansky

Open Textbooks

Volumes in Writing Spaces: Readings on Writing offer multiple perspectives on a wide-range of topics about writing, much like the model made famous by Wendy Bishop’s “The Subject Is . . .” series. In each chapter, authors present their unique views, insights, and strategies for writing by addressing the undergraduate reader directly. Drawing on their own experiences, these teachers-as-writers invite students to join in the larger conversation about developing nearly every aspect of the craft of writing. Consequently, each essay functions as a standalone text that can easily complement other selected readings in writing or writing-intensive courses across the disciplines …

Business Review

The aim of this research was to target television professionals in the state, and the private sector to develop their professional capabilities to address gender issues, and to portray women in an affirmative manner in the media. Research literature of the past indicated that women were paid 30% less than men: That they experienced an invisible barrier, the “glass ceiling effect": That organizations headed by women were less corrupt and more efficient. The present research focused on these issues in Pakistani organizations. Imperial College of Business Studies Lahore was assigned the research by United Nation Development Programme, to see if …

Multicultural Education, Elaine Chan Jan 2010

Multicultural Education, Elaine Chan

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

North American society is becoming increasingly diverse through immigration and the birth of children into immigrant families. The foreign-born population in the United States (U.S.) represented 11.1% of the total population in the year 2000, for a total of 31.1 million people who were born outside of the country. In addition, over 22 million people in the U.S. changed their state of residence between 1995 and 2000. In Canada, 18.4% of the total population, for a total of 5.4 million people, were born outside the country, and 11.2% of the population identified themselves as members of a visible minority group. …

Teacher Learning By Script, Jenelle Reeves Jan 2010

Teacher Learning By Script, Jenelle Reeves

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

Scripted instruction (SI) programs, which direct teachers to teach, even to talk, from a standardized written script, are roundly criticized for inhibiting teacher creativity and teacher learning. In fact, such programs utilize scripting for exactly that reason: to reduce teacher interference with (and presumed weakening of) the prescribed curriculum and its delivery. Yet, two teachers in this 18-month study reported learning much about language and language teaching from scripted instruction programs. Through a sociocultural lens, this article explores how an instructional program so widely decried as de-professionalizing instead became a catalyst for these teachers’ professional growth. Exploring the teachers’ reasoning …

The Political Fourth Amendment, Thomas P. Crocker Jan 2010

The Political Fourth Amendment, Thomas P. Crocker

Faculty Publications

The Political Fourth Amendment builds on Justice Ginsburg's recent dissent in Herring v. United States to argue for a "more majestic conception" of the Fourth Amendment focused on protecting political liberty. To put the point dramatically, we misread the Fourth Amendment when we read it exclusively as a criminal procedure provision focused entirely on either regulating police or protecting privacy. In order to see the Fourth Amendment as contributing to the Constitution's protections for political liberty, and not simply as an invitation to regulate police practice, we must take seriously the fact that the Fourth Amendment's textual purpose is to …

Status Of Credit For Prior Learning (Cpl) At The University Of Kentucky For 2008 & 2009 Official Cohorts, Randolph Hollingsworth Jan 2010

Status Of Credit For Prior Learning (Cpl) At The University Of Kentucky For 2008 & 2009 Official Cohorts, Randolph Hollingsworth

Undergraduate Education White Papers

This paper explores the college readiness levels of University of Kentucky's incoming first-year students, especially in preparation for success in UK's STEM majors.  Attention is paid to the statewide standards using ACT sub-scores in English, Reading and Mathematics, as well as the students’ scores from nationally recognized assessments (e.g., Advanced Placement scores). Evidence regarding a significant number of our entering cohorts for 2008 and 2009 (first time first-year, full-time, degree-seeking) who bring in credit for prior learning (CPL) is examined, and the paper discusses briefly how CPL affects their placement in their fall semester courses.

Sensation Rebuilt: Carnal Ontology In Levinas And Merleau-Ponty, Tom Sparrow Jan 2010

Sensation Rebuilt: Carnal Ontology In Levinas And Merleau-Ponty, Tom Sparrow

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The phenomenological approaches to embodiment presented by Levinas and Merleau-Ponty cannot provide an adequate account of bodily identity because their methodological commitments forbid them from admitting the central role that sensation plays in the constitution of experience. This neglect is symptomatic of their tradition's suspicion toward sensation as an explanatory concept, a suspicion stemming from Kant's critique of empiricist metaphysics and Husserl's critique of psychologism and objectivism. By contrast, I suggest that only with a robust theory of sensation can the integrity of the body and its relations be fully captured. I therefore develop--contra Kant and Husserl's idealism--a realist conception …

Freedom Of Religion At The Supreme Court In 2009: Multiculturalism At The Crossroads?, Nathalie Des Rosiers Jan 2010

Freedom Of Religion At The Supreme Court In 2009: Multiculturalism At The Crossroads?, Nathalie Des Rosiers

The Supreme Court Law Review: Osgoode’s Annual Constitutional Cases Conference

Religious toleration has meaning only when it leads to the acceptance of decisions that one finds unpalatable or incomprehensible. Otherwise, when religious toleration only means respect for differences within a generally acceptable spectrum of options, it requires no constitutional protection. It is because a majority may feel compelled to act against a minority, may feel sufficiently irritated, repelled or dismissive of a minority that constitutional protection is needed. The article critically examines the decision in Alberta v. Hutterian Brethren as an indication a waning commitment to multicultural values. The article suggests that freedom of religion has often been interpreted as …

Hiv-Based Claims For Protection In The U.S. And U.K., Ruly Tafzil Jan 2010

Hiv-Based Claims For Protection In The U.S. And U.K., Ruly Tafzil

UC Law SF International Law Review

This year, millions will suffer persecution and death as a result of their HIV-positive status and AIDS-related illnesses. In the face of this morbid reality stands the promise of refuge offered by the international community, laid out in instruments such as the Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees and the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR). This note compares and critiques the means by which HIV-positive persons may claim protection in the United States and the United Kingdom. In the United States, HIV-based claims for asylum were predominantly characterized as claims of persecution on account of a particular social …

The Development Of A Human-Centric Fuzzy Mathematical Measure Of Human Engagement In Interactive Multimedia Systems And Applications, Chandre Butler

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The utilization of fuzzy mathematical modeling for the quantification of the Human Engagement is an innovative approach within Interactive Multimedia applications (mainly video-based games designed to entertain or train participants on intended topics of interest) that can result in measurable and repeatable results. These results can then be used to generate a cogent Human Engagement definition. This research is designed to apply proven quantification techniques and Industrial/Systems Engineering methodologies to nontraditional environments such as Interactive Multimedia. The outcomes of this research will provide the foundation, initial steps and preliminary validation for the development of a systematic fuzzy theoretical model to …

Robust Dialog Management Through A Context-Centric Architecture, Victor C. Hung Jan 2010

Robust Dialog Management Through A Context-Centric Architecture, Victor C. Hung

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation presents and evaluates a method of managing spoken dialog interactions with a robust attention to fulfilling the human user’s goals in the presence of speech recognition limitations. Assistive speech-based embodied conversation agents are computer-based entities that interact with humans to help accomplish a certain task or communicate information via spoken input and output. A challenging aspect of this task involves open dialog, where the user is free to converse in an unstructured manner. With this style of input, the machine’s ability to communicate may be hindered by poor reception of utterances, caused by a user’s inadequate command of …
