Effect Of Prompted Reflection And Metacognitive Skill Instruction On University Freshmen's Use Of Metacognition, Dana Lynn Erskine Jan 2010

Effect Of Prompted Reflection And Metacognitive Skill Instruction On University Freshmen's Use Of Metacognition, Dana Lynn Erskine

Theses and Dissertations

Research in metacognition has long demonstrated that applying metacognitive strategies improves students learning and performance. Incoming college and university freshmen are not typically trained in using the metacognitive skills that could enhance their academic performance and their satisfaction with the college experience. This study attempted to assess first-year university students' metacognitive awareness and usage at two levels: (a) After direct and specific metacognitive training, (b) after engaging in weekly metacognitive reflection assignments. Six classes of university freshmen were studied in terms of their use of metacognitive skills and strategies as they progressed through their initial semester. Four of the six …

Effects Of Age And Experience On The Production Of English Word-Final Stops By Korean Speakers, Wendy Baker Jan 2010

Effects Of Age And Experience On The Production Of English Word-Final Stops By Korean Speakers, Wendy Baker

Faculty Publications

This study examined the effect of second language (L2) age of acquisition and amount of experience on the production of word-final stop consonant voicing by adult native Korean learners of English. Thirty learners, who differed in amount of L2 experience and age of L2 exposure, and 10 native English speakers produced 8 English monosyllabic words ending in voiced and voiceless stops. These productions were presented to 10 English listeners for perceptual judgment and subjected to acoustic analyses to determine how well learners produced vowel duration and closure (stop gap) duration, two cues to stop consonant voicing. Results revealed that even …

Where Christ Dies Daily: Performances Of Faith At Orlando‘S Holy Land Experience, Sara B. Dykins Callahan Jan 2010

Where Christ Dies Daily: Performances Of Faith At Orlando‘S Holy Land Experience, Sara B. Dykins Callahan

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This manuscript focuses on performances of place and faith inside the Holy Land Experience (HLE), an edutainment complex nestled in the fantasy nexus of Orlando, Florida. A self-proclaimed living-history museum, the HLE includes animatronic Bible characters and musical dramas. The HLE enacts and embodies evangelical narratives of Christianity and Christian faith, and visitors to the park are asked to join the performances, blurring the distinctions between spectators and professional actors. I argue that visitors' performances of faith invest the space of the HLE with sacredness, while the location and design of the HLE infuses the space with elements of the …

From Husserl And The Neo-Kantians To Art: Heidegger's Realist Historicist Answer To The Problem Of The Origin Of Meaning, William H. Koch Jan 2010

From Husserl And The Neo-Kantians To Art: Heidegger's Realist Historicist Answer To The Problem Of The Origin Of Meaning, William H. Koch

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In this work I present both a historical and philosophical argument. First, I use Martin Heidegger's early interest in the argument that concepts are furnished to the mind directly by experience, as found in Edmund Husserl's categorial intuition and Emil Lask's principle of the material determination of form, to build an interpretation of Being and Time and "The Origin of the Work of Art" which provides a unified understanding of Heidegger's consistent underlying position throughout his career as one of realist historicism. My interpretation of Heidegger as a realist historicist rejects the reading of Being and Time as a transcendental …

From Ideal To Practice And Back Again: Beginning Teachers Teaching For Social Justice, Ruchi Agarwal, Shira Epstein, Rachel Oppenheim, Celia Oyler, Debbie Sonu

Publications and Research

The five authors of this article designed a multicase study to follow recent graduates of an elementary preservice teacher education program into their beginning teaching placements and explore the ways in which they enacted social justice curricula. The authors highlight the stories of three beginning teachers, honoring the plurality of their conceptions of social justice teaching and the resiliency they exhibited in translating social justice ideals into viable pedagogy. They also discuss the struggles the teachers faced when enacting social justice curricula and the tenuous connection they perceived between their conceptions and their practices. The authors emphasize that such struggles …

Negative And Positive Roles Of Media In The Belgian Conflict: A Model For De-Escalation, Martin Euwema, Alain Verbeke Jan 2010

Negative And Positive Roles Of Media In The Belgian Conflict: A Model For De-Escalation, Martin Euwema, Alain Verbeke

Marquette Law Review

The Kingdom of Belgium straddles the cultural boundary between Germanic and Latin Europe, and is home to two main linguistic groups: the Dutch-speaking Flemish and the French-speaking Walloons.

Early in the twentieth century, King Albert I was told by a Walloon political leader, “Sire, there are no Belgians anymore, only Flemings and Walloons.” The Belgian conflict between the Flemish North and the Francophone South is a typical multi-issue conflict that combines issues of history, culture, and identity, with strong economic dimensions. The conflict has a long history: “The heat of the discussions in the media, parliament and public opinion led …

Hope And Worry Among Mothers Of Children With An Autism Spectrum Disorder Or Down Syndrome, Paula Ogston Jan 2010

Hope And Worry Among Mothers Of Children With An Autism Spectrum Disorder Or Down Syndrome, Paula Ogston

Theses and Dissertations

The present study used quantitative and qualitative methodology to examine mothers’ hope and worry. Participants were recruited via autism and Down syndrome organizations. Two hundred fifty-nine mothers of children with autism spectrum disorders (n = 199) and Down syndrome (n = 60) responded to the online questionnaire. Most mothers were white (n = 230); eighty-seven percent were married and their average age was 39.06 years. Findings support previous research suggesting that hope is a protective factor against psychological distress: mothers with higher hope reported lower dispositional worry. Mothers were asked to describe what they worried about when they woke up …
