Healthy Aging And Art Therapy, Sunhee K. Kim

Expressive Therapies Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of art therapy on healthy aging in older adults in terms of its promotion of well-being and a better quality of life. Few research studies have been conducted on the Korean American older adult population to investigate the effectiveness of art therapy. The present study was undertaken to quantitatively assess the effect of art therapy on this population using three standardized psychological instruments to measure the dependent variables of affect, anxiety, and selfesteem. An effort was made to understand the physiology of the brain as it relates to art therapy …

Class Blogs As New-Age Assessment And Feedback Tools., Norazrin Zamri

Student Works (2010-2019)

This study investigated the perceptions of Malaysian university students and educators regarding the use of class blogs as an assessment tool in ESL courses. The objective is to provide evidence for the feasibility of this issue. The participants’ perceptions, obtained from questionnaires and semi-structured interviews, were analyzed based on Carl Rogers’ Humanistic approach to language learning. The findings showed that there is a parallel relationship between the aspects of Humanistic approach and the perceptions of the participants in this study. The aspects analyzed were: motivation; active interactive learning; non-threatening environments; feedback; wholesome collaborative relationships; autonomous learning; assessment for life-long learning; …

The Real Problem: Avatars, Metaphysics, And Online Social Interaction, David J. Gunkel Feb 2010

The Real Problem: Avatars, Metaphysics, And Online Social Interaction, David J. Gunkel

Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship

It is often assumed that the problem with ‘virtual reality’ – the concept, its various technological deployments and the apparently oxymoronic phrase itself – has been our understanding, or perhaps misunderstanding, of the virtual. The real problem, however, is not with the virtual; it is with the real itself. This article investigates the undeniably useful but ultimately mistaken and somewhat misguided concept of the real that has been routinely operationalized in investigations of new media technology. The specific point of contact for the examination is the avatar. What is at issue here is not the complicated structures and articulations of …

Further Exploration On Relationship Between Crisp Sets And Fuzzy Sets, Zhaoxia Wang, Quan Wang, Ming Bai, Chen Zeng-Qiang, Zhen Sun Feb 2010

Further Exploration On Relationship Between Crisp Sets And Fuzzy Sets, Zhaoxia Wang, Quan Wang, Ming Bai, Chen Zeng-Qiang, Zhen Sun

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper employs the concept of fuzzify upgrade operator to describe the relationship between crisp sets, fuzzy sets and higher order fuzzy sets, such as type-2 fuzzy sets. Theory analysis and case studies demonstrate that a crisp set can be represented by a type-1 fuzzy set, a type-1 fuzzy set can be represented by a type-2 fuzzy set, and a type-n (n>=2) fuzzy set can be represented by a type-(n+1) (n>=2) fuzzy set. The fuzzify upgrade operator makes crisp sets, type-1 fuzzy sets, type-2 fuzzy sets and any fuzzy sets much more accessible to all readers. The relationship …

The Margin And The Center: A Study In Selected Works From Contemporary Egyptian Novels, Linda Istanbulli Feb 2010

The Margin And The Center: A Study In Selected Works From Contemporary Egyptian Novels, Linda Istanbulli

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is a study of the margins and the centers of Cairo as viewed through the lens of modern and contemporary Egyptian novels. I trace how these and other Egyptian writers map the main forces that shape centers of power, how centers of power see and use the marginalized, how the marginalized themselves picture these centers. The marginalized, by conceptual necessity, are defined by two cultures and two societies at the same time; the margin and the center. I explore how Egyptian writers locate and represent these two forces, and how this duality creates relationships that keep these two …

The Battle Of Murten: The Invasion Of Charles The Bold And The Survival Of The Swiss States, Albert Winkler Feb 2010

The Battle Of Murten: The Invasion Of Charles The Bold And The Survival Of The Swiss States, Albert Winkler

Faculty Publications

When Charles the Bold of Burgundy tried to create a new kingdom between France and the German Empire, he decided to conquer the Swiss states. His aggression started the Burgundian Wars from 1474 to 1477. Charles besieged the fortress of Grandson early in 1476. When the Swiss garrison surrendered, Charles had all four hundred of the defenders hanged. In the Battle of Grandson, the Swiss drove the Burgundian Army away, but Charles soon invaded again. This time he besieged the fortress of Murten, and the Swiss rallied all their forces to attack him. In the subsequent battle, the Swiss infantry …

The Teaching Function Of Patents, Sean B. Seymore Feb 2010

The Teaching Function Of Patents, Sean B. Seymore

Vanderbilt Law School Faculty Publications

In theory, a patent serves the public good because the disclosure of the invention brings new ideas and technologies to the public and induces inventive activity. But while these roles inherently depend on the ability of the patent to disseminate technical knowledge, the teaching function of patents has received very little attention. Indeed, when the document publishes, it can serve as a form of technical literature. Because patents can, at times, communicate knowledge as well as, or better than, other information sources, patents could become a competitive source of technical information. Presently, however, patents are rarely viewed in this manner. …

End The Failed Chevron Experiment Now: How Chevron Has Failed And Why It Can And Should Be Overruled, Jack M. Beermann Feb 2010

End The Failed Chevron Experiment Now: How Chevron Has Failed And Why It Can And Should Be Overruled, Jack M. Beermann

Faculty Scholarship

In Chevron U.S.A., Inc. v. NRDC, decided in 1984, the Supreme Court announced a startling new approach to judicial review of statutory interpretation by administrative agencies, which requires courts to defer to agency interpretations of ambiguous statutes. Although it was perhaps hoped that Chevron would simplify judicial review and increase deference to agency interpretation, the opposite has occurred. Chevron has complicated judicial review and at best it is uncertain whether it has resulted in increased deference to agency interpretation. In fact, for numerous reasons, Chevron has been a failure on any reasonable measure and should be overruled. Further, overruling Chevron …

What Is Biomedical Informatics?, Elmer V Bernstam, Jack W Smith, Todd R Johnson Feb 2010

What Is Biomedical Informatics?, Elmer V Bernstam, Jack W Smith, Todd R Johnson

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Biomedical informatics lacks a clear and theoretically-grounded definition. Many proposed definitions focus on data, information, and knowledge, but do not provide an adequate definition of these terms. Leveraging insights from the philosophy of information, we define informatics as the science of information, where information is data plus meaning. Biomedical informatics is the science of information as applied to or studied in the context of biomedicine. Defining the object of study of informatics as data plus meaning clearly distinguishes the field from related fields, such as computer science, statistics and biomedicine, which have different objects of study. The emphasis on data …

A Corpus Analysis Of Stance Marker Use In International And Egyptian Medical Research Articles, Sarah Ahmed Seleem Feb 2010

A Corpus Analysis Of Stance Marker Use In International And Egyptian Medical Research Articles, Sarah Ahmed Seleem

Theses and Dissertations

The need for stance expression and making the position of the writers clear about what they are reporting is well documented in the literature (Biber, 2006; Kelly & Bazerman, 2003; Hyland, 2005; 2008; Molino, 2010; Myers, 1989; Williams, 2006). Even hard knowledge disciplines that were traditionally expected to sound objective and detached employ stance projection strategies by which researchers express their opinions, degree of certainty or ownership of the different claims that are stated in their work (Harwood, 2005 ; Hyland, 2005). Authors of research who are writing in English as their second language (L2) are reported to find difficulty …

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Two correlative approaches to the challenge of ecological niche modeling (genetic algorithm, maximum entropy) were used to estimate the potential global distribution of the invasive fruit fly, Bactrocera invadens, based on associations between known occurrence records and a set of environmental predictor variables. The two models yielded similar estimates, largely corresponding to Equatorial climate classes with high levels of precipitation. The maximum entropy approach was somewhat more conservative in its evaluation of suitability, depending on thresholds for presence/absence that are selected, largely excluding areas with distinct dry seasons; the genetic algorithm models, in contrast, indicate that climate class as partly …

Fixing Patent Boundaries, Tun-Jen Chiang Feb 2010

Fixing Patent Boundaries, Tun-Jen Chiang

Michigan Law Review

The claims of a patent are its boundaries, defining the scope of exclusion. This boundary function of claims is undermined by the fact that claims can be changed throughout the life of the patent, thereby moving the patent boundary. A boundary that can be moved at-will is one that the public cannot rely upon. This Article explores the problems of malleable patent boundaries. If a claim can be amended to permit a patentee to capture something he did not foresee when filing the patent application, the amendment confers an unexpected windfall that did not contribute to incentives to invent before …

The State Of Statelessness: Justice, Violence, Subjectivity, And Urban Asylum Seeking And Refugee Women In Cairo, Mariham Iskander Wahba Feb 2010

The State Of Statelessness: Justice, Violence, Subjectivity, And Urban Asylum Seeking And Refugee Women In Cairo, Mariham Iskander Wahba

Theses and Dissertations

Cairo is a complex urban city and this is the landscape upon which various struggles occur. In 1997 UNHCR released their â Comprehensive Policy on Urban Refugeesâ in response to the increasing numbers of refugees in urban areas. UNHCR acts as the ultimate â space allocaterâ and examines who â deservesâ to access urban space and who is or is not and â urbanâ refugee. Justice in this case becomes a highly spatialized concept and as a consequence, accessing justice also becomes a spatialized process. For asylum seeking and refugee women in Cairo, justice and access to this commodity is …

An Analysis Of The Publishing Activity Of Keston Institute In The Context Of Its Last Three Years Of Operation In Oxford (2003-2006), Davorin Peterlin Feb 2010

An Analysis Of The Publishing Activity Of Keston Institute In The Context Of Its Last Three Years Of Operation In Oxford (2003-2006), Davorin Peterlin

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe

By way of introduction, the study will give an outline of the history of Keston Institute (KI). It will then identify the period of three years (2003-2006) as the period during which KI attempted to integrate in the academic life of the Oxford University under the new director. The period ended with the effective closing down of the institution in its historical shape and with regard to many of its previous activities. On the surface this decision had to do with increasing financial difficulties, but it is the author's contention that on another level it was an outcome of a …

On Elkenah As Canaanite El, Kevin L. Barney Jan 2010

On Elkenah As Canaanite El, Kevin L. Barney

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Many easily recognizable Hebrew words and names can be found in the Book of Abraham. One name that hasn’t had a concrete meaning attached to it, however, is Elkenah. In this article, Barney addresses whether Elkenah is a person, place, or name; what its possible linguistic structures are; and what it might mean. Most importantly, Barney links Elkenah with the Canaanite god El and the attending cult—a cult that practiced human sacrifice. This has significant ramifications for the Book of Abraham, which has been criticized for its inclusion of human sacrifice. Assuming a northern location for the city Ur …

Problem Of Critique: Triangulating Habermas, Derrida, And Gadamer Within Metamodernism, Stephen Matthew Feldman Jan 2010

Problem Of Critique: Triangulating Habermas, Derrida, And Gadamer Within Metamodernism, Stephen Matthew Feldman

Faculty Articles

This essay argues that HansGeorg Gadamer's philosophical hermeneutics J├╝rgen Habermas's communication theory and Jacques Derrida's deconstruction all fit together within one philosophical paradigm metamodernism Metamodernism as defined is opposed to both modernism and radical forms of postmodernism Within metamodernism a political conundrum provides the key clue for understanding the relations among Gadamer Habermas and Derrida as well as for elaborating the contours of the paradigm Specifically the political implications of the three philosophies are intransitive they seem to shift around rather than being in fixed relations to each other So for instance Gadamer sometimes seems to the political right of …

Lehi In The Samaria Papyri And On An Ostracon From The Shore Of The Red Sea, Jeffrey R. Chadwick Jan 2010

Lehi In The Samaria Papyri And On An Ostracon From The Shore Of The Red Sea, Jeffrey R. Chadwick

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Until the discovery of Ostracon 2071, dating from the fifth century BC, in the 1930s on the shores of the Red Sea, the name Lehi (l?y in the discovered text) had been unattested in any extant document outside of the Book of Mormon. However, Nelson Gluek, along with many other scholars, including Hugh Nibley, vocalized l?y as “La?ai,” which pronunciation would have south Semitic roots. Chadwick argues, instead, that a Hebrew context for the ostracon would be more plausible and that therefore the more likely pronunciation would be “l??y.” He also argues for a Hebrew origin of the compound …

Do Supreme Court Nominees Lie? The Politics Of Adjudication, Stephen Matthew Feldman Jan 2010

Do Supreme Court Nominees Lie? The Politics Of Adjudication, Stephen Matthew Feldman

Faculty Articles

When John Roberts and Samuel Alito testified during their Senate confirmation hearings they promised to decide cases apolitically in accord with the rule of law Yet during their first terms on the Supreme Court they repeatedly voted to decide cases consistently with their conservative political ideologies One must wonder did Roberts and Alito lieÔÇÿ This Essay answers this crucial question by critiquing the theories of Richard Posner and Ronald Dworkin two of the most prominent jurisprudents of this era While Posner and Dworkin have vehemently attacked each other they both maintain that Supreme Court adjudication of hard cases is politics …
