The Role Of Ethnicity And Perceptions Of The Family Environment In Self-Determination Among Students With Disabilities, Raymond J. Rodriguez
The Role Of Ethnicity And Perceptions Of The Family Environment In Self-Determination Among Students With Disabilities, Raymond J. Rodriguez
Open Access Dissertations
Considerable research exists on the importance of self-determination in the transition of students with disabilities from high school. Much of this research has focused on conditions in the family that may nurture and support the development of self-determined motivation. These conditions, as described by Self -Determination Theory, include support for autonomy, relatedness and competence. Little data exists, however, on whether the conditions in the family environment associated with self-determination vary depending on students' ethnic backgrounds. Participants consisted of 138 Latino and Anglo students with disabilities enrolled in six high schools within a large urban school district. Self-determination was measured using …

Defining International Terrorism: Historical Reality And The African Experience, Kwame B. Antwi-Boasiako
Defining International Terrorism: Historical Reality And The African Experience, Kwame B. Antwi-Boasiako
Faculty Publications
Violence is terror and terror is violence. Liberators, freedom fighters, revolutionaries and terrorists have all become labels of convenience. Terrorism, historically, has been institutionalized by some governments to their advantage. Academicians and politicians fail to agree on the issues surrounding terrorism hence defining terrorism has become an academic puzzle. The ambiguity in its definition has also contributed to lack of any universal comprehensive acceptable theory. The literature on terrorism by and large accused weaker nations of supporting terrorism. This paper argues otherwise by using the African experience, slavery and colonization, to question the literature on terrorism. Nations throughout history have …

Sifting Through The Cultural Dust: A Pre-Transformational Activity, Robert Duiker
Sifting Through The Cultural Dust: A Pre-Transformational Activity, Robert Duiker
Master of Education Program Theses
Technologically mediated communication which has flooded the worlds of North American people with information brings with it an increasing uncertainty about the reliability of this information. This flood of information delivers worldview and culture, completely unsorted, in very small increments to the hearts and minds of young people who are students in Christian schools. These small increments we call cultural dust. This study identifies technology, and specifically mass media and computer mediated communication, as a factor that has contributed to accelerated cultural change in the lives of students who attend Christian schools. Data collected through this action research project provides …

Multi-Disciplinary Development Of An Early Warning And Automated Response System (Ewars) For Epidemic Prevention, Ajit N. Babu, Engelbert Niehaus
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
It is becoming increasingly clear that changes in the environment can promote growth ofdisease vectors like mosquitoes and rodents as well as rise in water-borne illnesses likecholera and other enteric diseases. Our paper is based on the concept that a multidisciplinaryinformatics scaffold can serve as an Early Warning and Automated Response System(EWARS) for a variety of communicable diseases. It will utilize multiple informationresources including Remote Sensing (RS), Global Positioning Systems (GPS) andGeographic Information Systems (GIS) for exposure assessment (John et al 2004). Earlywarning systems are not new (Witt et al 2009). However, what is novel in the proposal isthe integration …

Meta-Modelling The European Environmental Information Space, Werner Pillmann, Karl-Heinz Simon
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
In this paper a conceptual Meta-Model is presented with the aim to structure environmental information, relevant for the environmental part of sustainable development. It is focused on crucial environmental information flows handled in the discipline of Environmental Informatics. The introduced structure is a conceptual systems dynamics type model which describes the natural environment (air, water, soil, climate etc.), the private sector (industry, trade, transport etc.) and households. It uses the input-output presentation where causeeffect chains and information feedback paths are considered. The Meta-Model brings together substantial information about environmental indicators from different areas and organizations, the knowledge about levels of …

Attorney General’S Annual Report To Congress And Assessment Of U.S. Government Activities To Combat Trafficking In Persons
United States Department of Justice: Publications
Introduction
The victims of modern slavery have many faces. They are men and women, adults and children. Yet, all are denied basic human dignity and freedom…. We must join together as a Nation and global community to provide [a] safe haven by protecting victims and prosecuting traffickers. With improved victim identification, medical and social services, training for first responders, and increased public awareness, the men, women, and children who have suffered this scourge can overcome the bonds of modern slavery, receive protection and justice, and successfully reclaim their rightful independence.

Robust Fuzzy Cpu Utilization Control For Dynamic Workloads, Can Basaran, Mehmet H. Suzer, Kyoung-Don Kang, Xue Liu
Computer Science Faculty Scholarship
In a number of real-time applications such as target tracking, precise workloads are unknown a priori but may dynamically vary, for example, based on the changing number of targets to track. It is important to manage the CPU utilization, via feedback control, to avoid severe overload or underutilization even in the presence of dynamic workloads. However, it is challenge to model a real-time system for feedback control, as computer systems cannot be modeled via physics laws. In this paper, we present a novel closed-loop approach for utilization control based on formal fuzzy logic control theory, which is very effective to …

Ladies, Whores, And Holy Women: A Sourcebook In Courtly, Religious, And Urban Cultures Of Late Medieval Germany, Ann Marie Rasmussen, Sarah Westphal-Wihl
Ladies, Whores, And Holy Women: A Sourcebook In Courtly, Religious, And Urban Cultures Of Late Medieval Germany, Ann Marie Rasmussen, Sarah Westphal-Wihl
TEAMS Medieval German Texts in Bilingual Editions
This sourcebook presents editions and translations of seven fourteenth- and fifteenth-century texts that advance our understanding of gender, sexuality, and class in the late medieval German-speaking world. Three of the translated texts are fiction. Additionally, there is a religious treatise, a religious legend, an inventory of books, and a legal document. While each of these texts is instructive in and of itself, they gain in complexity when brought into dialogue with one another.
Cultural Conflicts In Mathematics Classrooms And Resolution: The Case Of Immigrants From The Former Soviet Union And Israeli "Old Timers", Miriam Amit
The Mathematics Enthusiast
This paper describes a singular process that has been transforming mathematics education in Israel over the past 20 years, as a result of a massive influx of mathematics teachers from the former Soviet Union (FSU). It traces the key points of conflict that marked the initial contact between Israel's mathematical and educational culture and the codes and values brought with the immigrant teachers from the FSU. It then shows how this conflict is gradually becoming resolved, as the two disparate cultures merge into a single, new culture, based on 'the best of both worlds.' This case, we claim, can serve …

No Child Left Behind: School Processes Associated With Positive Changes, Collaborative Partnership, And Principal Leadership, Thienhuong Hoang
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)
Parent involvement is one of the key components of the NCLB Act. Under NCLB, every school district is mandated to develop processes to ensure meaningful ways to engage parents. The requirements for parental involvement rest on the premise that parents acting as informed advocates to hold schools and school district accountable. The value placed on family involvement at the federal, district, and local school levels reflects decades of research showing the connection between family involvement and positive student outcomes. Studies on family involvement have concluded that students’ home environment and family involvement are important predictors of a variety of academic …

Teachers Identify And Support At-Risk Gifted Students, Theresa Monaco, Danna Eichenold, Victoria Kasper, Claudi Gonzales
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal (2003-2012)
Six experienced teachers in the regular classroom, who happen to have one, or more students that was identified by the school as having gifted characteristics or students that teachers felt should have been identified as a gifted student, develop their way of helping students overcome personal challenges. It is our hope that a research documented approach will catch the eye of other teachers and motivate them to do the same. Each teacher documented research as it relates to his/her student(s). In the absence of a school identification process, other researched identification processes served as benchmark for teacher support. Following are …
Innovation And Recovery, John F. Duffy
Innovation And Recovery, John F. Duffy
Marquette Intellectual Property Law Review
Crisis inevitably brings hope for recovery. The recent past has seen a great economic crisis and a crisis in the patent system. Precisely because crisis reveals the flaws in the old, recovery demands the new; it demands innovation. Economic crisis thus makes recovery in the patent system especially urgent because it reveals the degree to which continuing prosperity depends on society's ability to reorganize itself, to change, to innovate. Towards that end, society should reconsider how our patent system makes judgments about invention. More specifically, Professor Duffy will seek to show through this lecture that the change most necessary for …

“Weavings Of War, Fabric Of Memory,” An Exhibit Review, Lisa Gabbert
English Faculty Publications
Weavings of War, Fabrics of Memory is an exhibition of international textiles spanning a number of countries and ethnic/linguistic groups. Bound together by the themes of war, armed conflict, displacement, and rupture, works in the exhibit include post-apartheid South African memory cloths, Hmong story cloths, arpilleras from Chile and Peru, and war rugs from Central Asia. I brought the exhibit to Logan, Utah, in the fall of 2007 and organized lectures and films around it. It was displayed at the Thatcher-Young Mansion, the final stop on its three-year tour. An exhibit catalogue of the same title was edited by Ariel …

Cookie traditions? Family reunions? Snipe hunting? Jell-O recipes in Utah? Undergraduates’ folklore research projects cover an amazing variety of offbeat subjects. These topics may seem superficially unimportant to many scholars in other fields, and they usually are overlooked in the serious halls of academe (although undergraduate research in folklore often finds its way into professional books and publications as scholars use materials deposited in folklore archives, a recent example of which is Elizabeth Tucker’s 2007 book Haunted Halls).
Problem Posing From The Foundations Of Mathematics, Libby Knott
Problem Posing From The Foundations Of Mathematics, Libby Knott
The Mathematics Enthusiast
This reflective paper develops a repertoire of questions for teachers to use in their classrooms during episodes of mathematics discussions with and among students. These questions are motivated by an examination of questions posed by Wittgenstein in Zettel, and are connected to underlying tacit assumptions about mathematics, most of which lie subtly below the generally accepted milieu of math-talk. Once classrooms norms have been established to encourage participation by all students in a democratic and just classroom environment, these questions can be used effectively to stimulate meaningful discourse. These questions provide important examples of problem posing designed to encourage student …
