Open Notebook Science Challenge Solubilities Of Organic Compounds In Organic Solvents, Andrew Lang, Jean-Claude Bradley, Cameron Neylon, Rajarshi Guha, Antony J. Williams, Bill Hooker, Brent Friesen

College of Science and Engineering Faculty Research and Scholarship

The Open Notebook Science Solubility Challenge Solubility is an important consideration for many chemistry applications. Synthetic chemists usually use a solvent to perform reactions and knowledge of the solubility of the starting materials or products can be very useful to pick an appropriate solvent. Analytical chemists can use solubility to design separation techniques and factor in dynamic range considerations. Physical chemists can create and evaluate their models of how molecules interact in the solubilization and precipitation processes. Solubility data can be obtained from a variety of online and offline sources. As with all chemical data, it can be a challenge …

Recent Experimental And Clinical Findings In The Skeleton Associated With Loss Of Estrogen Hormone Or Estrogen Receptor Activity, Eric P. Smith, Bonny Specker, Kenneth S Korach Feb 2010

Recent Experimental And Clinical Findings In The Skeleton Associated With Loss Of Estrogen Hormone Or Estrogen Receptor Activity, Eric P. Smith, Bonny Specker, Kenneth S Korach

Ethel Austin Martin Program Publications

Studies on rodent models and rare human disorders of estrogen production or response have revealed an increased complexity of the actions of estrogen on bone. ERalpha disruption in human males results in delayed epiphyseal maturation, tall stature, trabecular thinning, marked cortical thinning, genu valgum and significantly reduced cortical vBMD, but trabecular number is preserved and there is normal to increased periosteal expansion. Aromatase deficiency results overall in a similar phenotype, although less is known about skeletal architecture. Importantly, estrogen replacement in these individuals, even if provided late in the third decade, may normalize aBMD. Less certain is whether there is …

Development Of A Device For Whole Body Stimulation Of The Otoliths, Jon Edward Weimer Jan 2010

Development Of A Device For Whole Body Stimulation Of The Otoliths, Jon Edward Weimer

Theses

Over the past few decades, research has been conducted to explore the effects of microgravity on human musculature, As seen in astronauts upon their return to Earth after prolonged spaceflight, extensive muscle atrophy due to adaptation to conditions of microgravity many times decreases a person's ability to walk or even stand, With an understanding of the anatomical mechanisms that provide postural control, the proper stimulation, resulting in a reduction in spasticity, could be provided by simulating these conditions of microgravity.

In order to simulate microgravity, a device has been developed that is capable of providing whole body stimulation of the …

Toward Wearable Pneumatic Haptic Devices For Microscale Force Feedback Applications, Athena Frazier Jan 2010

Toward Wearable Pneumatic Haptic Devices For Microscale Force Feedback Applications, Athena Frazier

Theses

The addition of haptic feedback to systems and devices allows a human user to gain a more complete understanding of the remote environment they are working in. Several applications, such as robotic minimally invasive surgery (MIS) and virtual reality gaming, have drawn interests for integrating haptic or tactile feedback onto remote operating tools. While both research studies and commercial products have clearly demonstrated the benefits of adding haptic feedback, many open questions remain for reaching the full potential of haptic feedback. This research focuses on investigating how light-weight, low-cost pneumatic haptic devices can be deployed on human hands, possibly in …

A Dreadful Prognosis: Patentability Of Diagnostic And Personalized Medical Procedures In The Wake Of In Re Bilski, Matthew D. Show Jan 2010

A Dreadful Prognosis: Patentability Of Diagnostic And Personalized Medical Procedures In The Wake Of In Re Bilski, Matthew D. Show

UC Law Science and Technology Journal

Over the past few decades, patent applicants in certain technological fields are discovering a conflict inherent between the nature of their claimed inventions and judicial interpretation of Jefferson's Patent Act language throughout the 19th and 20th Centuries. This conflict is particularly apparent in the fields of diagnostic and personalized medicine. This note discusses both modern Supreme Court precedent regarding the requirements for a patentable method claim as how Bilski v. Doll, a business method case, threatens to make such methods unpatentable. Additionally, this note offers the results of an analysis demonstrating how patent agents and attorneys currently draft these types …

Fero Corpum Ferri An Exploration Of The Role Of Human Physiology Against A Backdrop Of Everincreasing Mechanical Supplantation, David Bennett Jan 2010

Fero Corpum Ferri An Exploration Of The Role Of Human Physiology Against A Backdrop Of Everincreasing Mechanical Supplantation, David Bennett

Theses & ETDs

This essay, Fero Corpum Ferri, is meant to accompany a thesis exhibition, comprised of paintings and drawings. The paintings are executed on a medium scale, composed of brightly colored anatomical, mechanical, and invented shapes. They intimate a Pop art or graffiti sensibility that remains coolly detached while approaching varying levels of anatomical and schematic depictions from organs and machinery to cellular abstraction and invented mechanisms. The project continues the investigation of the tensions between humanity and the growing industrial landscape begun by the Dadaists in the early 20th century. The paintings and drawings in this series invoke metaphors for …

The Adl Of Sexuality: A Guide For Occupational Therapists For Elderly Clients, Autumn Edmundson, Amber Lafrenz

Occupational Therapy Capstones

Purpose: The purpose of this scholarly project was to develop a guide that would address the assessments, treatment/interventions, and discharge planning process regarding sexual health/sexuality with an elderly client. Through the use of the guide and accompanying resources it is assumed that occupational therapists will have an increased level of comfort, knowledge, and competence. This is important as Couloumbis and Miller (1994) study indicated that occupational therapists that received formal education (academically or clinical practice) addressed sexuality in the elderly 27.8% more than occupational therapists who did not have any educational experience.

Methodology: An in depth literature review was conducted …

Characterizing The Advanced Glycation Endproducts Formation Of Proteins And Nucleotides By Methylglyoxal And Glyoxal, Praveen Kumar Pampati

Open Access Dissertations

Advanced glycation endproducts (AGEs) are a heterogeneous group of molecules formed from the nonenzymatic reaction of reducing sugars with free amino groups of proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids. The initial product of this reaction is called a Schiff base, which rearranges itself into an Amadori or glycation product which can further rearrange to AGEs. The reaction is called Maillard reaction and is the basis for all protein glycation studies. AGEs accumulate in tissues and associate with the pathology of various diseases like Diabetes, Alzheimer's disease, renal failure, aging, etc. Methylglyoxal, 3-Deoxyglucosone and glyoxal (oxoaldehydes or α-dicarbonyls) have recently been proposed …
