The Reception Of Autos-De-Fe In 18th Century New Spain: Image, Text And Practice, Emmanuel Ortega Jul 2010

The Reception Of Autos-De-Fe In 18th Century New Spain: Image, Text And Practice, Emmanuel Ortega

Art & Art History ETDs

In 18th century New Spain, autos-de-fé were publicly performed as a way to openly confront the sins of heretics and to announce their penance. Paintings of these events are among the rarest scenes ever depicted on both sides of the Atlantic. Paintings, such as Un auto de f\xe8 en el pueblo de San Bartolomé Otzolotepec ca.1716, emphasize the impressive display of power enacted by the inquisition through autos-de-fé. However, they downplay the presence of the indigenous spectator-participant in lieu of the organizers and elite invitees. In terms of content, however, this painting represents a unique example of auto images since …

Quilt Documentation Projects 1980-1989: Exploring The Roots Of A National Phenomenon, Christine Humphrey Jul 2010

Quilt Documentation Projects 1980-1989: Exploring The Roots Of A National Phenomenon, Christine Humphrey

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The documenting of thousands of quilts by small groups throughout the United States was one of the most notable parts of the 1980s surge of interest in quilt history. The purpose of this study was to examine the phenomenon of quilt documentation projects of the 1980s and to gain a better understanding of the social and cultural factors that influenced the organizers and the participants. Inspired by the success of the Kentucky Quilt Project, Inc. in 1983, organizers in thirty-five other states initiated or completed statewide documentation projects by 1989. This study examined five of those statewide projects—the Kentucky Quilt …

The Squatters And The Polish Exiles: Frontier And Whig Definitions Of Republicanism In Jacksonian Illinois, Eric Willey Jul 2010

The Squatters And The Polish Exiles: Frontier And Whig Definitions Of Republicanism In Jacksonian Illinois, Eric Willey

Faculty and Staff Publications – Milner Library

In 1834, 235 exiled Polish revolutionaries petitioned the United States Congress for a grant of land for the purpose of establishing a colony on the American frontier. Congress, sympathizing with the plight of the Poles and applauding their struggle against Russian tyranny in the Polish Revolution of 1830, issued a limited land grant with certain restrictions to the Poles; unfortunately, the lands near modern day Rockford and Rockton, Illinois selected by Polish agent Louis Chlopicki were occupied by native squatters attempting to exercise their own preemption rights. For several years the two sides debated who was best suited to settle …

Getting Up To Speed: Acceleration Strategies In The Florida Scrub Lizard, Sceloporus Woodi, Eric J. Mcelroy, Lance D. Mcbrayer Jul 2010

Getting Up To Speed: Acceleration Strategies In The Florida Scrub Lizard, Sceloporus Woodi, Eric J. Mcelroy, Lance D. Mcbrayer

Biology: Faculty Publications

Small animals typically rely on quick bursts and intermittent pauses when moving in the wild. Hence, the study of acceleration capacity is important for understanding the ecology and evolution of locomotor performance. In this study, we investigate intraspecific variation in the acceleration capacity of a small lizard (Sceloporus woodi). To quantify animal acceleration performance, the momentum‐impulse theorem is applied to data collected from high‐speed video recordings of individuals accelerating from a standstill and over a subsequent distance of 0.4 m. Unlike earlier studies, the momentum‐impulse approach allows one to directly and precisely quantify the per step contribution to …

Representation In Kenya, Its Diaspora, And Academia: Colonial Legacies In Constructions Of Knowledge About Kenya's Coast, Jesse Benjamin Jun 2010

Representation In Kenya, Its Diaspora, And Academia: Colonial Legacies In Constructions Of Knowledge About Kenya's Coast, Jesse Benjamin

Journal of Global Initiatives: Policy, Pedagogy, Perspective

This paper explores the construction of knowledge in Kenya in the context and aftermath of colonialism and underdevelopment. Those communities that were politically and economically marginalized in Coast Province over the past century were also displaced in terms of academic opportunities, resulting in fewer social science scholars from Mijikenda and other non-Swahili communities in both Kenyan and diaspora universities. Underdevelopment studies in Africa and Kenya are briefly reviewed, and the colonial history of asymmetric social relations at coastal Kenya is traced. Finally, key debates over identity and history are examined within this context and shown to be exacerbated by diasporic …

Autonomic Reactivity And Recovery In Healthy Black, White, And Hispanic Women With And Without A Family History Of Cardiovascular Disease, Mardís Sara Karlsdóttir Jun 2010

Autonomic Reactivity And Recovery In Healthy Black, White, And Hispanic Women With And Without A Family History Of Cardiovascular Disease, Mardís Sara Karlsdóttir

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Exaggerated cardiovascular reactivity and impaired recovery to psychological stress is independently related to cardiovascular disease (CVD), and may play a causal role in its development. I examined autonomic reactivity and recovery in 136 black, white, and Hispanic women who were predisposed to CVD, as indicated by a positive family history (FH+). Pre-ejection period (PEP; sympathetic) and respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA; parasympathetic) were measured during public speaking, mental arithmetic, and cold pressor tasks. Overall, FH+ participants exhibited greater RSA reactivity, while black participants exhibited impaired RSA recovery. These findings suggest that a hereditary predisposition for CVD is related to altered autonomic …

Incidental Music: Enhancing The Emotional Experience Of The Audience, Kathleen B. Nelson, Daniel E. Nelson Jun 2010

Incidental Music: Enhancing The Emotional Experience Of The Audience, Kathleen B. Nelson, Daniel E. Nelson

Caesars Hospitality Research Summit

Environmental psychologists, who study transactions between individuals and their physical settings, maintain when an individual’s environment is changed, his/her behavior and experience are also changed by the environment (Gifford, 2002). Like other segments of the theatrical setting, a manipulation of the environment can enhance or constrain audience actions. Physical elements, as well as other ambient factors such as lighting, color, quality of materials, set design, music, fragrance, and room temperature are just a sample of the dramatic elements used to orchestrate the environment. However, this paper explores the relationship between the elements utilized to create enhanced experiences for the audience …

Clinical Development Of Formulated Therapeutic And Prophylactic Dna-Based Vaccines, Alain Rolland Jun 2010

Clinical Development Of Formulated Therapeutic And Prophylactic Dna-Based Vaccines, Alain Rolland

Vaccine Technology III

Over the recent years, plasmid DNA vaccines have reached licensure against infectious hematopoietic necrosis virus in farmed salmon (Canada), West Nile virus in horses and metastatic melanoma in dogs (United States). A number of approaches are currently evaluated in clinical trials to enhance the potency of DNA vaccines in humans, including formulation of DNA with delivery systems and adjuvants as well as administration of DNA with devices. This presentation will report on the development of TransVaxTM, a poloxamer-formulated therapeutic DNA vaccine against human cytomegalovirus (CMV) in transplant patients. A vaccine that increases CMV-specific T-cell responses could reduce CMV reactivation after …

Guidelines For Spiritual Reading From C.S. Lewis, Richard James Jun 2010

Guidelines For Spiritual Reading From C.S. Lewis, Richard James

Inklings Forever: Published Colloquium Proceedings 1997-2016

To several of his correspondents who asked of him, “What can I read to strengthen my faith?”, C.S. Lewis would provide a spiritual reading list of authors and their books which had helped him grow in his own Christian life. The primary purpose of this paper is to discuss these spiritual reading lists which included devotional books, apologetics, books of poetry, essays, sermons, commentaries, plays, allegories, spiritual autobiography and even novels. For evaluation the individual lists themselves and their provenance will be discussed including a timeline of authors on the lists and information about the recipients. In closing, suggestions will …

Girls Coming Of Age: Possibilites And Potentials Within Young Adult Literature, Abbey J. Fox Jun 2010

Girls Coming Of Age: Possibilites And Potentials Within Young Adult Literature, Abbey J. Fox

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

"Although the primary purpose of the adolescent novel may appear to be a depiction of growth, growth in this genre is inevitably represented as being linked to what the adolescent has learned about power. Without experiences gradations between power and powerlessness, the adolescent cannot grow" (Seelinger-Trites, x). The quote above asserts that an analysis of power must be considered when analyzing young adult literature. Rebecca Seelinger-Trites further explains that adolescents (in society and in literature) are both powerful and disempowered. Coming of age presents an opportunity to grow toward adulthood and gain certain power and privileges, while simultaneously losing certain …

Nigeria’S Human Rights Violation Investigation Commission (Hrvic) And Restorative Justice: The Promises, Tensions And Inspirations For Transitional Societies, Raymond Olúsèsan Àìná Jun 2010

Nigeria’S Human Rights Violation Investigation Commission (Hrvic) And Restorative Justice: The Promises, Tensions And Inspirations For Transitional Societies, Raymond Olúsèsan Àìná

African Journal of Criminology and Justice Studies

The lack of peace in most post-colonial African nation-states is tied to unresolved political asymmetry among peoples with contending narratives of origins and power relations. The Justice system bequeathed to these states at their ‘flag’ independence has been unsuitable for evolving a justicecontinuum that can ameliorate the asymmetry and consequent conflicts. However, Restorative Justice appears to hold promises and inspirations for affected nation-states. Nevertheless, this article contends that a perceived hyper-romanticisation of Restorative Justice’s promises must be tempered with critical realism about its ambiguities. Nigeria’s Restorative Justice experiment, “Human Rights Violation Investigation Commission”, serves as point of reference.

Rethinking Childhood Subjectivity: The Psycho-Politics Of Socialization, Private-Language Formation, And The Case Of Bosnian Youth, Adnan Selimovic Jun 2010

Rethinking Childhood Subjectivity: The Psycho-Politics Of Socialization, Private-Language Formation, And The Case Of Bosnian Youth, Adnan Selimovic

International Education

Under the guise of socialization, the child-subject born into the modern society is subjugated by a familial childhood trauma that appropriates the infantile psychosis caused by the incommunicability of early childhood. This appropriation, put to instrumental ends, results in a psychology of commodified object relations. In fact, there is a close relationship between the historical narrative of a culture and the trauma to which children are subjected as they become members of the social organization. The psycho-politics of the human condition are thus revealed in the realm of the progressive political discourse under which socialization occurs. This project concerns the …

Complexity Of Female Sex Workers’ Collective Actions In Postsocialist China, Tiantian Zheng Jun 2010

Complexity Of Female Sex Workers’ Collective Actions In Postsocialist China, Tiantian Zheng

Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies

This paper explores labor resistance amongst rural migrant karaoke bar hostesses, many of whom are sex workers, in the northeastern Chinese city of Dalian. I argue that hostesses are subject to exploitation and violence because of hostile public policy and the organization of the sex industry, both of which limit the possibilities for labor organizing based upon localistic networks. While hostesses do form alliances based upon their native place, which supplies them with financial and emotional support, these localistic networks are transient and temporary because hostesses aspire to deflect from their group as a “criminal” group and they also face …

Modernity In Márquez And Feminism In Ousmane, Geetha Ramanathan Jun 2010

Modernity In Márquez And Feminism In Ousmane, Geetha Ramanathan

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Modernity in Márquez and Feminism in Ousmane" Geetha Ramanathan analyzes Gabriel García Márquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude and Sembène Ousmane's God's Bits of Wood. Ramanthan argues that if Márquez presents the semblance of the signs of modernity as fantasy and delusion, Ousmane's investment in the train as an instrument of the future in realist terms seems to challenge the modernist dictum that imperialism can be challenged only through modernist decenterings and through tricking and trumping. Yet, Ousmane's refusal to engage in the hallucination of the modern in his novel offers us a version of modernity that …

Till' Death (Or Conversion) Do Us Part - Coptic Divorces In Egyptian Courts And Their Implications, Barbara Viktoria Bishay Jun 2010

Till' Death (Or Conversion) Do Us Part - Coptic Divorces In Egyptian Courts And Their Implications, Barbara Viktoria Bishay

Theses and Dissertations

When President Gamal Abdel Nasser nationalized and unified the courts in 1956, he aimed at fostering unity and equality among the Egyptians. But this move has in fact achieved quite the opposite, as it forces Coptic Egyptians to sometimes choose between the freedom of practicing their religion and equality before the law, two basic human and civil rights that should be granted to all. By nationalizing the courts and yet still adhering to religious codes of personal status laws (PSL), legal dualism has not ceased to exist in Egypt and it is put into an ambivalent status between civil and …
