Our Health Matters: Promoting The Health Of Sexual Minority Women In The New Media Landscape, Brenda Kane Nov 2010

Our Health Matters: Promoting The Health Of Sexual Minority Women In The New Media Landscape, Brenda Kane

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The shifts occurring in the mediascape and the field of public health offer new opportunities for promoting the health and wellness of sexual minority women. As a population that has historically been underserved by the healthcare system, sexual minority women face multiple barriers to achieving positive health outcomes. They are often less likely to access preventive healthcare services and more likely to engage in risky behaviors that are detrimental to health than heterosexual women. Despite the significant health disparities among sexual minority women, studying this population has not been a priority in health research and there is little research-based evidence …

Measuring Airport Efficiency With Fixed Asset Utilization To Minimize Airport Delays, Scott D. Widener Oct 2010

Measuring Airport Efficiency With Fixed Asset Utilization To Minimize Airport Delays, Scott D. Widener

Open Access Dissertations

Deregulation of the airlines in the United States spawned a free-for-all system which led to a variety of agents within the aviation system all seeking to optimize their own piece of the aviation system, and the net result was that the aviation system itself was not optimized in aggregate, frequently resulting in delays. Research on the efficiency of the system has likewise focused on the individual agents, primarily focusing on the municipalities in an economic context, and largely ignoring the consumer. This paper develops the case for a systemic efficiency measurement which incorporates the interests of the airlines and the …

Legality And [Dis]Membership: Removal Of Citizenship And The Creation Of ‘Virtual Immigrants', Leila Kawar Oct 2010

Legality And [Dis]Membership: Removal Of Citizenship And The Creation Of ‘Virtual Immigrants', Leila Kawar

Political Science Faculty Publications

This article seeks to show that liberal law continues to justify and legitimize displacements of minority populations, even in an age of universal human rights. As demonstrated by the Israeli court’s 1988 decision legitimating the deportation of Mubarak Awad, citizenship and immigration laws provide juridical justifications for contemporary ethno-national settler projects. In the aftermath of a territorial conflict that defines or redefines the bounds of the state, racially-marked indigenous populations are vulnerable to being legally recast as “aliens” or “virtual immigrants.” National conflict may thus be transformed by legal formalism into a question of immigration law, allowing the power relations …

Daviborshch's Cart, David Fraser Oct 2010

Daviborshch's Cart, David Fraser

University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters

In the spring of 1942, Nazi forces occupying the Ukraine launched a wave of executions targeting the region’s remaining Jewish communities. These mass shootings were open, public, and intimate. Although the victims themselves could never testify against their killers, many eyewitnesses could and did identify the perpetrators. Among these communities, three local men from the villages of Serniki, Israylovka, and Gnivan were intimately implicated in such killing operations: Ivan Polyukhovich, a forester in the German-controlled administration; Heinrich Wagner, a Volksdeutscher liaison officer; and Mikolay Berezowsky, a member of the local police force. More than fifty years later, these three men …

The Second Creek War, John T. Ellisor Oct 2010

The Second Creek War, John T. Ellisor

University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters

Historians have traditionally viewed the “Creek War of 1836” as a minor police action centered on rounding up the Creek Indians for removal to Indian Territory. Using extensive archival research, John T. Ellisor demonstrates that, in fact, the Second Creek War was neither brief nor small. Indeed, armed conflict continued long after “peace” was declared and the majority of Creeks had been sent west. Ellisor’s study also broadly illuminates southern society just prior to the Indian removals, a time when many blacks, whites, and Natives lived in close proximity in the Old Southwest. In the Creek country, also called New …

The Moravian Springplace Mission To The Cherokees, Rowena Mcclinton

University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters

In 1801 the Moravians, a Pietist German-speaking group from Central Europe, founded the Springplace Mission at a site in present-day northwestern Georgia. The Moravians remained among the Cherokees for more than thirty years, longer than any other Christian group. John and Anna Rosina Gambold served at the mission from 1805 until Anna’s death in 1821. Anna, the principal author of the diaries, chronicles the intimate details of Cherokee daily life for seventeen years. Anna describes mission life and what she heard and saw at Springplace: food preparation and consumption, transactions pertaining to land, Cherokee body ornaments, conjuring, Cherokee law and …

The Migrant Homemaker: Historicizing Gender Between Nations In Yamina Benguigui’S Inch’Allah Dimanche, Olivia Donaldson

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

This article examines Yamina Benguigui’s film Inch’Allah dimanche (2001) to probe questions of gender and nation in the context of transnational migration. An analysis of the historical drama, which recounts an Algerian family’s reunion in France during the 1970s, reveals how the migrant homemaker must negotiate her symbolic role as “bearer of the nation” in relationship to not one but two nations: the homeland left behind and the new homeland. This filmic study of “gender between nations” proposes the benefits of transnational studies that literally “move beyond the borders of the nation” to consider the frontiers of the body. A …

Developing An Ecological Social Justice Framework For Ocean Energy Technologies: Case Studies From The Phillipines, Jay Batongbacal Oct 2010

Developing An Ecological Social Justice Framework For Ocean Energy Technologies: Case Studies From The Phillipines, Jay Batongbacal

PhD Dissertations

Unless subjected to skeptical and conscious scrutiny, environmentally-friendly ocean energy technologies can become Trojan machines of social inequity due to the subtle re-organizing influences of technologies on culture and the society. Environmental laws that promote or regulate ocean energy technologies can act as Trojan legal regimes in the absence of a framework for assessing and anticipating their adverse impacts on social justice. Environmental justice is inadequate for this task, so an alternative framework is proposed: ecological social justice, drawn from the Third Worlds perspective of sustainable development as equitable sharing. Though overshadowed by the prevalent notion of sustainable development as …

What Lies Beneath: Uncovering The Health Of Milwaukee's People, 1880-1929, Brigitte Marina Charaus Oct 2010

What Lies Beneath: Uncovering The Health Of Milwaukee's People, 1880-1929, Brigitte Marina Charaus

Dissertations (1934 -)

The true measure of a city's health is the health of its people. To truly understand how Milwaukee came to be known as the "healthiest city" in 1930, one must examine the health needs of common Milwaukeeans from 1880 to 1929. This study seeks to complement Judith Leavitt's pioneering work on public health in Milwaukee by presenting a picture, not of the politics of health reform, but of the personal side of health in the city.

Through an extensive examination of records including, but not limited to, coroner's reports, hospital records, personal correspondence, newspapers, cemetery data, and institutional records, a …

Clinicians' Diagnostic Evaluation Of Chronic Childhood Trauma Disorder : An Examination Of The Clinical Utility Of Developmental Trauma : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, April T. Salvaterra

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

In this study licensed mental health clinicians working with traumatized children and adolescents participated in a mixed method web survey examining professional opinions on the provisional Developmental Trauma Disorder diagnosis submitted for inclusion in the DSM-V. It was found that 88.3% of participating clinicians agreed that the diagnostic criteria for Developmental Trauma Disorder adequately described the symptomatology displayed by their clients with histories of complex trauma. Eighty-six percent of clinicians reported that they would assign their clients a diagnosis of DTD were it available in the current DSM-IV, and 75.5% of those clinicians said they would use DTD in place …

A significant amount of attention is given to the choice of Pando, Colorado for the training sight, actual construction, and the unique qualities that Camp Hale brought to army cantonment construction given the time limitation put on the project, the choice of land, initial earth …

The End Of The End : A Qualitative Exploration Of Barriers That Impact Social Workers' Capacity To Practice End-Of-Life Care To Inmates : A Project Based Upon Independent Investigation, Michael Ronald Smith

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

The purpose of this qualitative, exploratory study was to identify and examine barriers that impact social workers' capacity to provide end-of-life care to biopsychosocially, spiritually vulnerable inmates. The study was guided by the research question, What barriers impact social workers' capacity to provide end-of-life care to inmates? A sample of 12 master's-level social workers was recruited and interviewed. The sample consisted of ten women, two men, and one person of color. Participants in the sample worked in seven correctional institutions, in seven states, at the federal, state and county level. The study's findings indicate that at each of these levels, …
