Impact Of Globalization On Central Appalachian Women: Social Capital And Social Support Networks, Jennifer Lanham Jan 2010

Impact Of Globalization On Central Appalachian Women: Social Capital And Social Support Networks, Jennifer Lanham

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Social networks and capital often sustain community and individual survival. This phenomenological study was designed to illuminate the experience of job loss within the context of globalization, describing the phenomenon from the perspective of rural women and its meaning for those participants. Using a phenomenological approach, this qualitative study explored eight rural women in Appalachian Kentucky who had experienced apparel factory layoffs as a result of global outsourcing. A modified form of van Kaam's method (Moustakas, 1994) was used for phenomenological analysis of the data. Data were analyzed using an eight-step technique to identify essential characteristics of rural women's lived …

A Pastoral Theology Of Congregational Care And Leadership: Nurturing Emergence, Carol P. Jeunnette Jan 2010

A Pastoral Theology Of Congregational Care And Leadership: Nurturing Emergence, Carol P. Jeunnette

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As with all bodies, congregational bodies experience challenges to their health, well-being, and ability to function as they desire. Problems in faith communities range from severe, intractable conflict to lethargy and decline, with far-ranging effects. The practice of offering pastoral care to individuals experiencing difficulties is rooted deeply in the Judeo-Christian tradition. There is, however, no explicit tradition of pastoral care for corporate congregational bodies experiencing difficulties. This dissertation draws on Bowen Family Systems Theory and its application by Edwin Friedman to congregations and leadership, in conjunction with aspects of process theology, to develop a pastoral theology of congregational care …

Teaching About Genocide: A Cross-Curricular Approach In Art And History, Mark Thorsen Jan 2010

Teaching About Genocide: A Cross-Curricular Approach In Art And History, Mark Thorsen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This study describes the experiences of suburban area high school 10th, 11th, and 12th grade art students immersed in a cross-curricular study of the Holocaust and genocide. Three participant-educators, art teachers, and I, a history teacher, designed a two week curricular unit which was implemented in January, 2010, to increase student-participant awareness and action to address the global problem of genocide. This cross-curricular unit used non-discursive sources of testimony in a variety of forms of representation to inspire student-participant artwork.

Four research questions guided this study: How do educators use a variety of forms of representation to teach the complexities …

Distinguishing A Western Women's College: A History Of The Curriculum At Colorado Women's College, 1909–1967, Jennifer Ann Thompson Jan 2010

Distinguishing A Western Women's College: A History Of The Curriculum At Colorado Women's College, 1909–1967, Jennifer Ann Thompson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Colorado Women's College (CWC), a private, Baptist college for women in Denver, Colorado, first welcomed students to its campus in 1909, making it one of only a handful of women's colleges in the American West, where coeducation predominated. This dissertation describes and interprets the curriculum offered at CWC in the period from 1909 to 1967. The analysis of the curriculum is divided into six eras, marked by moments of curricular change, including the College's transitions from four-year college to junior college, and back. This project distinguishes CWC as an understudied institution by placing it within the literature on the history …

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Every student who studies atmospheric pressure in physics or chemistry learns the principles behind the construction of barometers. Cistern barometers, such as those found in most laboratories, consist of a long glass tube containing an inverted column of liquid having an open end in a cistern of the liquid. Students learn that the column of liquid is supported by air pressure and is equal in weight to a column of air of the same diameter.

The Long Shadow Of Colonialism: The Origins Of The Doctrine Of Emergency In International Human Rights Law, John Reynolds Jan 2010

The Long Shadow Of Colonialism: The Origins Of The Doctrine Of Emergency In International Human Rights Law, John Reynolds

Comparative Research in Law & Political Economy

Amidst the post-war turn to transcend international law’s traditional power structures in the narration and codification of individual rights, colonial interests and legal philosophies retained an influence on the framing of human rights discourse. This essay explores the extent to which the particular conception of the ‘state of emergency’ that was distilled into the normative framework of international human rights law at its inception stemmed specifically from Britain’s traditions of colonial governance and legislation. The evolution of emergency law is traced from martial law in England and the ‘first empire’, through British emergency legislative codes in Ireland and India in …

Characterization And Evolution Of The Serh Immobilization Antigen Genes In Tetrahymena Thermophila, Christopher Thomas Mcginness Jan 2010

Characterization And Evolution Of The Serh Immobilization Antigen Genes In Tetrahymena Thermophila, Christopher Thomas Mcginness

ETD Archive

Tetrahymena thermophila express a major cell surface protein known as the immobilization (i-) antigen which coats the entire cell surface including the cilia. T. thermophila has several different i-antigens which are expressed in a mutually exclusive manner under varying environmental conditions. When the genes for these i-antigens were sequenced it was found that they encode proteins consisting of imperfect repeats with cysteine periodicity. The best characterized of these i-antigens are those specified by alleles at the SerH i-antigen locus. The H proteins all contain a section of 8-cysteine containing imperfect repeats. The presence of repeats allows for the possibility that …

A Vision For Acms, James Bradley

ACMS Journal 2010-2011

This paper presents a vision for the mission of the ACMS. It considers some plausible connections between mathematics and theology as well as some big questions that Christian mathematicians might fruitfully explore. It examines the current cultural norms of the mathematics guild, why these are problematic for Christians, and some possible ways the ACMS might respond.

The Aparri Operation – The Aif Plan For The Invasion Of Luzon 1944-1945, Peter J. Dean

Arts Conference Papers

During 1943 Australian forces made their most significant contribution to the war in the Pacific. The ‘Reconquest’ operations in New Guinea were the largest ever Australian military operations. Some twenty-five Australian infantry battalions participated in these operations, the most to see action simultaneously since the battle in the Somme Valley in 1918, and they were provided with naval, logistic and air support that was immensely greater than anything provided to Australians during the First World War.

Following these highly successful operations US forces in the South West Pacific Area (SWPA) took over major operations against the Japanese, while the Australian …

The Invention Of Creativity: The Emergence Of A Discourse, Camilla Nelson Jan 2010

The Invention Of Creativity: The Emergence Of A Discourse, Camilla Nelson

Arts Papers and Journal Articles

Creativity is increasingly cited as the key to social and economic change in the 21st century. It is also a very modern concept — making its first appearance as an English noun in 1875. This paper investigates the cultural construction of creativity in the context of the history of ideas. It understands creativity not as a given human attribute or ability, but as an idea that emerges out of specific historical moments, shaped by the discourses of politics, science, commerce, and nation. It shifts the ground of analysis away from the naturalised models that have traditionally dominated the field of …

The Influence Of The Bowl Championship Series On Competitive Balance In College Football, Stephen W. Dittmore, Craig M. Crow Jan 2010

The Influence Of The Bowl Championship Series On Competitive Balance In College Football, Stephen W. Dittmore, Craig M. Crow

Journal of Applied Sport Management

Competitive balance in sport has been identified as a predictor of demand for sporting events, and leagues. Conferences frequently seek to maximize outcome uncertainty as a means of increasing demand. While competitive balance was not initially a goal of the Bowl Championship Series (BCS), competitive balance in American college football has generally been regarded as improved since the implementation of the BCS. The present study confirms empirically that within-season competitive balance inside all six founding BCS conferences has improved since its creation. However, only three of the six conferences exhibited improved between-season competitive balance, meaning frequent turnover of championship teams …
