Black And White On Black: Whiteness And Masculinity In The Works Of Three Australian Writers - Thomas Keneally, Colin Thiele, And Patrick White., Matthew Israel Byrge
Black And White On Black: Whiteness And Masculinity In The Works Of Three Australian Writers - Thomas Keneally, Colin Thiele, And Patrick White., Matthew Israel Byrge
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
White depictions of Aborigines in literature have generally been culturally biased. In this study I explore four depictions of Indigenous Australians by white Australian writers. Thomas Keneally's The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith (1972) depicts a half-caste Aborigine's attempt to enter white society in a racially-antipathetic world that precipitates his ruin. Children's author Colin Thiele develops friendships between white and Aboriginal children in frightening and dangerous landscapes in both Storm Boy (1963) and Fire in the Stone (1973). Nobel laureate Patrick White sets A Fringe of Leaves (1976) in a world in which Ellen Roxburgh's quest for freedom comes only through …

Public Opinion In The Social Media Era: Toward A New Understanding Of The Spiral Of Silence, Daniel Lemin
Public Opinion In The Social Media Era: Toward A New Understanding Of The Spiral Of Silence, Daniel Lemin
Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses
This thesis explores the intersection of a long-standing public opinion theory – the spiral of silence – and the recent explosion in social publishing tools such as Tumblr and Twitter. It uses real-world discussion settings (including face-to-face focus groups and synchronous online discussions) in tandem with a pre-test/post-test methodology to measure opinion shifts on the topic of corn syrup and childhood nutrition/obesity. This research design is based on well-established criticisms challenging that the spiral of silence may not be fully explained by a national climate of opinion on a topic, suggesting that there are other influences on individual beliefs than …

Preeclampsia, Autoimmunity And The At1 Receptor, Roxanna A. Irani
Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)
Preeclampsia (PE) is a disease of late pregnancy characterized by maternal hypertension and proteinuria. It is associated with preterm delivery and significant perinatal morbidity and mortality. Despite affecting ~7% of first pregnancies, there is no effective screening method to identify women at risk, nor is there a definitive treatment other than delivery of the baby and placenta. Though the pathogenesis of PE remains unclear, an imbalance in the renin-angiotensin and immune systems are thought to be major contributors. Bridging these two concepts, it has recently been shown that women with PE harbor specific autoantibodies: the angiotensin II type 1 receptor …
A Historical Analysis Of Property Reform Act Of 2006, David Pitts
A Historical Analysis Of Property Reform Act Of 2006, David Pitts
All Dissertations
The South Carolina Property Tax Reform Bill was signed into law in June 2006 creating a new way of generating money for public education in South Carolina. The Property Tax Reform Act eliminated 100% of the fair market value of 4% owner-occupied property for the purposes of taxation for school operations. Additionally, the Act increased the sales tax by 1% on most goods. Further, the Act limited a local school district's ability to raise additional revenue.
The following qualitative study used historical research design with an emphasis on oral history. The researcher used the wealth neutrality theory for the theoretical …
Memory Jugs: Change And Continuity In A Traditional American Art Form, Jennifer Priscilla Hornby
Memory Jugs: Change And Continuity In A Traditional American Art Form, Jennifer Priscilla Hornby
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Memory Jugs: Continuity and Change in a Traditional American Art Form, examines the evolution of the memory jug practice in the United States from the late eighteenth-century to present day. I argue that Congo African ritual objects known as minkisi are responsible for the origin of the memory jug. Ways of thinking about and using objects that can be observed in minkisi are used to strengthen the previously established analogy between memory jugs and African American grave decoration. The concept of memory is explored as it becomes increasingly influential to the memory jug practice in the twentieth-century. Four nineteenth- to …

"An Asylum To The Persecuted And Oppressed Of Every Nation And Religion": Dissenters And Liberals In The Drive For Religious Freedom In Virginia, Shelley Dawn Bailess
Masters Theses
The struggle for full religious liberty in Virginia encompassed nearly two decades and generated thousands of documents in the form of petitions and legislation. In spite of historical tendencies to claim primacy in the victory of liberty over establishment in matters of religion for one denomination or individual, it was a unique triangulation of religious dissenters and prominent legislators that resulted in the separation of church and state in Virginia. The ideas that brought these seemingly disparate groups together emerged from theological, as well as political ideas that were prevalent in 18th century thought. The passage of Jefferson's Statute Establishing …

Dew Line Passage: Tracing The Legacies Of Arctic Militarization, Stacey A. Fritz
Dew Line Passage: Tracing The Legacies Of Arctic Militarization, Stacey A. Fritz
Anthropology
Grounded within the context of modern American militarization, this dissertation is a descriptive, ethnohistorical, and ethnographic study focusing on the impacts and legacies of the development, implementation, and decommissioning of the western sector of the Distant Early Warning radar line (DEW Line) in northern Alaska and Canada's western Arctic. Understanding the localized social and environmental impacts of global militarization is a critical task for anthropology and one that coincides in the North with the need to gather histories from Inuit perspectives. This study's purposes are to elucidate how the global phenomenon of modern militarization penetrates and brings about change in …
Dan Graham's Video-Installations Of The 1970s, Michael J. Shaffer
Dan Graham's Video-Installations Of The 1970s, Michael J. Shaffer
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation examines the video-installations created by American artist Dan Graham in the 1970s. It investigates the artist's relationship to Minimalism by analyzing themes Graham highlights in his own writings and in interviews. In particular, I explore how the artist's understanding of Herbert Marcuse, Walter Benjamin, and R.D. Laing informed his post-Minimalist work and how concepts gleaned from these sources are manifest in his video-installations. Also undertaken are discussions of the artist's interest in aestheticized play, the just-past present, the debate between Behaviourism and phenomenology, surveillance, and Modern architecture. In addition, I investigate Graham's position in Conceptual art, use of …
Comparison Of Rural Providers And Consumers Regarding Community Health Assets And Deficits, Diane Kenski
Comparison Of Rural Providers And Consumers Regarding Community Health Assets And Deficits, Diane Kenski
College of Health Sciences Poster Presentations
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare rural health care providers and consumers related to perceived community health assets and deficits.
Background: Historically, studies of population health have focused primarily on deficits, identifying needs and problems of the health delivery system. Recent research has also focused on identifying community health assets, including resources for joint problem solving and health promotion. Limited research, particularly from the assets perspective, has addressed rural areas and few studies have compared provider verses consumer perceptions of community assets and deficits.
Method: A descriptive comparative design was used. A convenience sample of 123 residents, …
Modulation Of Cocaine-Like Behavioural Activity By Serotonin Uptake Inhibition Relative To The Effects Of The Novel And Selective Dopamine Transporter Inhibitor, D-84, Angela Batman
Theses and Dissertations
Cocaine dependence is a major health concern worldwide, but despite this high rate of abuse there are currently no approved therapies for cocaine dependence. Replacement pharmacotherapies are one possible approach for treating cocaine dependence, and identification of such therapeutics for cocaine abuse is the long-term goal of this research. Cocaine binds to, and inhibits uptake at the dopamine (DAT), serotonergic (SERT) and noradrenaline (NET) uptake transporters, but studies have shown that cocaine produces its strong behavioural and positive reinforcing effects through inhibition of the DAT. To this end a great number of diverse, non-selective DAT-inhibiting compounds have been investigated as …

Prospects For Nuclear Non-Proliferation: An Actor-Oriented Case Study Of Iran’S Future, James Martin Lockwood
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study is designed to assess the effectiveness of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Regime and analyze theories for effectively analyzing countries that are a risk for proliferating nuclear armaments. The initial phase of my research is designed to assess the existing literature and primary theoretical approaches for analyzing nuclear non-proliferation initiatives and potential nuclear proliferators. My main means of analysis will be to examine the national and international actors involved in each case. With this method, I plan to analyze a government at the level of each of its ruling institutions. Each of these institutions will be analyzed in the context …

Writing And Empire In Tacitus [Review], Timothy M. O'Sullivan
Writing And Empire In Tacitus [Review], Timothy M. O'Sullivan
Classical Studies Faculty Research
Over the past decade, scholars such as Ash, O’Gorman, and Haynes have taken up a cause long championed by Woodman, insisting that we must treat Tacitus’ works as literary productions before we can use them as historical documents. By remaining attentive to issues of voice, allusion, and narrative presentation, these scholars have shown how Tacitus is worthy of the kinds of intense readings we might perform on any ancient author writing in poetry or prose; in many ways they do for Tacitus what Miles, Jaeger, and Feldherr did for Livy in the 1990s. Dylan Sailor’s Writing and Empire in Tacitus …

Does The ‘Ease Of Doing Business’ In A Country Influence Its Foreign Direct Investment Inflows?, Katherine Piwonski
Does The ‘Ease Of Doing Business’ In A Country Influence Its Foreign Direct Investment Inflows?, Katherine Piwonski
Honors Projects in Finance
Foreign direct investment has been studied for years. It is generally accepted as a positive influence on the domestic market and governments have begun actively seeking it out. This study is meant to possibly connect government actions, for which the World Bank’s ‘Doing Business Index’ was used as a proxy, to an increase in foreign direct investment inflows. The goal of this study is to help governments make more informed decisions about if and how to attract foreign direct investment. The research was done by running a regression model to find a connection between changes in foreign direct investment inflows …

Patrick Henry: The Significance Of Harmonized Religious Tensions, Katie Kitchens
Patrick Henry: The Significance Of Harmonized Religious Tensions, Katie Kitchens
Masters Theses
This study explores the complex religious influences shaping Patrick Henry's belief system. It is common knowledge that he was an Anglican, yet friendly and cooperative with Virginia Presbyterians. However, historians have yet to go beyond those general categories to the specific strains of Presbyterianism and Anglicanism which Henry uniquely harmonized into a unified belief system. Henry displayed a moderate, Latitudinarian, type of Anglicanism. Unlike many other Founders, his experiences with a specific strain of Presbyterianism confirmed and cooperated with these Anglican commitments. His Presbyterian influences could also be described as moderate, and latitudinarian in a more general sense. These religious …
