Evaluating Obsolete Inventory Policies In A Hospital's Supply Chain, Maurice D. Cavitt Dec 2010

Evaluating Obsolete Inventory Policies In A Hospital's Supply Chain, Maurice D. Cavitt

Department of Industrial and Management Systems Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Numerous organizations are currently facing inventory management problems including distributing inventory on time and maintaining the appropriate inventory level to satisfy the end user. Organizations understand the importance of inventory accuracy as any error will increase the purchasing and holding costs affecting investment decisions. Lack of information about effective measures that will allow management to make important business decisions motivated this research to identify a decision criterion for warehouse management. A feasible solution of calculating the carrying cost ratio from purchasing and holding cost is the main objective of this thesis. The carrying cost ratio will allow managers to make …

Mechanism Of Fiber Assembly: Treatment Of Aβ Peptide Aggregation With A Coarse-Grained United-Residue Force Field, Ana Rojas, Adam Liwo, Dana Browne, Harold A. Scheraga Dec 2010

Mechanism Of Fiber Assembly: Treatment Of Aβ Peptide Aggregation With A Coarse-Grained United-Residue Force Field, Ana Rojas, Adam Liwo, Dana Browne, Harold A. Scheraga

Faculty Publications

The growth mechanism of β-amyloid (Aβ) peptide fibrils was studied by a physics-based coarse-grained united-residue model and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. To identify the mechanism of monomer addition to an Aβ1-40 fibril, we placed an unstructured monomer at a distance of 20 Å from a fibril template and allowed it to interact freely with the latter. The monomer was not biased towards fibril conformation by either the force field or the MD algorithm. With the use of a coarse-grained model with replica-exchange molecular dynamics, a longer timescale was accessible, making it possible to observe how the monomers probe different binding …

Parental Emotion Invalidation, Emotion Inhibition, And Rumination In Relation To Adolescent Depression, Janelle Victoria Williams

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This study tested a conceptual model which incorporated parental emotion invalidation of sadness, emotion inhibition, and rumination as contributing factors to depressive symptoms in adolescence. Adolescents completed questionnaires measuring their own emotion inhibition, rumination, and depression as well as their perceptions of their parents' invalidating reponses towards their sadness. Parents completed questionnaires measuring their perceptions of their invalidating responses towards their adoelscents' sadness, their perception of their adoelscents' sadness inhibition, and their perception of their adolescents' depressive symptoms. Path analyses were conducted to examine the direct and indirect relations among the four variables. Results showed that emotion inhibition and rumination …

For more than 50 years, education professionals have pondered over the phenomenon of failing schools. Despite years of educational reform efforts, America remains a Nation at Risk (1983). Towards the turn of the 21st century, America was well into it's third attempt to remedy one of its' major maladies, scholastic insufficiency. In the midst of schools failing to make Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP), decreasing graduation rates, and increasing teacher turn-over rates, stands the school leader. No Child Left Behind (NCLB)mandates, Race to the Top dollars, and other numerous policies attempt to provide incentives for regions and leaders who change failing …

An Exploratory Study Into The Impact Of Work Design On The Self-Efficacy Of Workers With Low Literacy Skills, Michael Kenneth Holt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

As trends in the labor market indicate growing worker shortages, the problem of incorporating workers with low literacy skills into the workplace becomes more important. There are significant numbers of low literate workers in the labor market who pose hard dollar costs on business and society due to literacy related mistakes.Organizations have been moving toward more participative work designs in efforts to attract and maintain satisfied and motivated workforces. There are significant skill sets required to become successful team members. Many of these skills are outlined in management literature, but one glaring oversight is dealing with the issue of low …

Ecological Impacts Of Stream Bank Stabilization In A Great Plains River, Christopher M. Pracheil Dec 2010

Ecological Impacts Of Stream Bank Stabilization In A Great Plains River, Christopher M. Pracheil

School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Reduced ecological complexity, decreased water quality, and accelerated stream bank erosion are common disturbances in rivers with agriculturally dominated watersheds. Massive bank failures, increased sediment loads, and decreased riverine habitat are current problems in the agriculturally dominated Cedar River of central Nebraska. In an effort to slow erosion and prevent further ecological degradation, 20 reach scale stream bank stabilization projects were installed on the Cedar River from 2001 to 2004. The objective of this study was to determine the impact of the Cedar River stream bank stabilization projects on the ecological conditions within the Cedar River. Stream bank erosion, suspended …

Simple Sequence Repeat Variation In The Daphnia Pulex Genome, Way Sung, Abraham Tucker, R. Daniel Bergeron, Michael Lynch, W. Kelley Thomas Dec 2010

Simple Sequence Repeat Variation In The Daphnia Pulex Genome, Way Sung, Abraham Tucker, R. Daniel Bergeron, Michael Lynch, W. Kelley Thomas

Molecular, Cellular & Biomedical Sciences

Background: Simple sequence repeats (SSRs) are highly variable features of all genomes. Their rapid evolution makes them useful for tracing the evolutionary history of populations and investigating patterns of selection and mutation across gnomes. The recently sequenced Daphnia pulex genome provides us with a valuable data set to study the mode and tempo of SSR evolution, without the inherent biases that accompany marker selection. Results: Here we catalogue SSR loci in the Daphnia pulex genome with repeated motif sizes of 1-100 nucleotides with a minimum of 3 perfect repeats. We then used whole genome shotgun reads to determine the average …

The Use Of High Distillers' Grains And Nutrient Management In Beef Feedlots, Amy R. Rich Dec 2010

The Use Of High Distillers' Grains And Nutrient Management In Beef Feedlots, Amy R. Rich

Department of Animal Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Two experiments were conducted to determine the effect of feeding wet distillers grains (WDGS) at 70% and wheat straw at 25% (DM basis) on finishing steer performance and N mass balance in open feedlot pens. Four treatments were tested as a 2x2 factorial with factors being diet and pen cleaning frequency (monthly or at the end of the feeding period). In both experiments the CON treatment (corn based diet) had greater DMI, ADG, HCW, marbling and fat depth. There was greater N intake and N excretion for both the WINTER and SUMMER experiments on the WDGS. Not all the additional …

A Rhetoric Of Change: Church Growth And Social Change At The Richmond Outreach Center, Rebekah Holbrook Dec 2010

A Rhetoric Of Change: Church Growth And Social Change At The Richmond Outreach Center, Rebekah Holbrook

Theses and Dissertations

The Richmond Outreach Center “The ROC” is an independent soulwinning megachurch in Richmond, Virginia. This thesis explores how rhetoric plays a role in the rapid growth of this urban church and considers the church’s response—rhetorically and politically—to the city’s social issues. Through a rhetorical analysis of sermons and written texts by Geronimo Aguilar, the ROC’s founder and pastor, it is concluded that Aguilar has generated a rhetoric of change that says social change must come to Richmond and that everyone, both rich and poor, are responsible for change. Aguilar galvanizes an audience to seek social change because he articulates roles …

Facial Expression Discriminates Between Pain And Absence Of Pain In The Non-Communicative, Critically Ill Adult Patient, Mamoona Arif-Rahu Dec 2010

Facial Expression Discriminates Between Pain And Absence Of Pain In The Non-Communicative, Critically Ill Adult Patient, Mamoona Arif-Rahu

Theses and Dissertations

BACKGROUND: Pain assessment is a significant challenge in critically ill adults, especially those unable to communicate their pain level. At present there is no universally accepted pain scale for use in the non-communicative (cognitively impaired, sedated, paralyzed or mechanically ventilated) patient. Facial expressions are considered among the most reflexive and automatic nonverbal indices of pain. The facial expression component of pain assessment tools include a variety of facial descriptors (wincing, frowning, grimacing, smile/relaxed) with inconsistent pain intensity ratings or checklists of behaviors. The lack of consistent facial expression description and quantification of pain intensity makes standardization of pain evaluation difficult. …
