A Cross-Sectional Study Of Infant Mortality Rates Between Countries, Katelyn E. May Dec 2010

A Cross-Sectional Study Of Infant Mortality Rates Between Countries, Katelyn E. May

Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects

The health status of nations has been and continues to be under debate. Although the variables that comprise such a status have not been solidified, one variable that is closely studied and is thought to have an effect on the idea of health status is infant mortality. A country’s Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) is treated as an indicator of its health status as well as socioeconomic status. This research attempts to study the variables which are hypothesized to be significant in relation to IMR, and to find which ones truly have an effect. Data on eight independent variables were collected …

Dual Inhibition Of Sodium-Mediated Proton And Calcium Efflux Triggers Non-Apoptotic Cell Death In Malignant Gliomas, William Harley, Candace Floyd, Tamara Dunn, Xiao-Dong Zhang, Tsung-Yu Chen, Manu Hegde, Hasan Palandoken, Michael H. Nantz, Leonardo Leon, K.L. Carraway Iii, Bruce Lyeth, Fredric A. Gorin

Chemistry and Biochemistry

Malignant glioma cells maintain an elevated intracellular pH (pHi) within hypoxic–ischemic tumormicroenvironments through persistent activation of sodium–proton transport (McLean et al., 2000). Amiloride has been reported to selectively kill human malignant glioma cell lines but not primary astrocytes (Hegde et al., 2004). While amiloride reduces pHi of malignant gliomas by inhibiting isoform 1 of sodium–proton exchange (NHE1), direct acidification was shown to be cytostatic rather than cytotoxic. At cytotoxic concentrations, amiloride has multiple drug targets including inhibition of NHE1 and sodium–calciumexchange. Amiloride's glioma cytotoxicity can be explained, at least in part, by dual inhibition of NHE1 and …

Campylobacter Ureolyticus: An Emerging Gastrointestinal Pathogen?, Susan Bullman, Daniel Corcoran, James O'Leary, Brigid Lucey, Deirdre Byrne, Roy D. Sleator

Department of Biological Sciences Publications

A total of 7194 faecal samples collected over a 1-year period from patients presenting with diarrhoea were screened for Campylobacter spp. using EntericBios, a multiplex-PCR system. Of 349 Campylobacter-positive samples, 23.8% were shown to be Campylobacter ureolyticus, using a combination of 16S rRNA gene analysis and highly specific primers targeting the HSP60 gene of this organism. This is, to the best of our knowledge, the first report of C. ureolyticus in the faeces of patients presenting with gastroenteritis and may suggest a role for this organism as an emerging enteric pathogen.

Thinking Differently: Developing A Fall Risk Assessment For The Emergency Department Setting, Carissa K. Fauks Dec 2010

Thinking Differently: Developing A Fall Risk Assessment For The Emergency Department Setting, Carissa K. Fauks

Theses and Graduate Projects

When a patient falls in the hospital it ends up being costly for both the patient and the hospital. Having an awareness of risk factors that lead to an increase in patient falls becomes very important for all nursing staff. However, the contributing factors are not the same for every department in a hospital. The focus of this proposal is the development of a fall assessment that is specific to the emergency department. Age, cognition, elimination, physical mobility, and medications were the risk factors determined to be most important after a review of the literature. Once the fall assessment scale …

Differences In Student Knowledge And Perception Of Learning Experiences Among Non-Traditional Students In Blended And Face-To-Face Classroom Delivery, Julieta A. Arano-Ocuaman Dec 2010

Differences In Student Knowledge And Perception Of Learning Experiences Among Non-Traditional Students In Blended And Face-To-Face Classroom Delivery, Julieta A. Arano-Ocuaman

Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the efficacy of traditional and blended (partially online and partially face-to-face) course delivery methods. This study further examined the impact of using technology to improve student learning by providing meaningful learning in the areas of content delivery, communication and collaboration, evaluation and feedback, and personal learning experiences. Non-traditional students enrolled in an elementary statistics course either delivered as a traditional course or a blended course participated in the study. It was hypothesized that students enrolled in the blended course would perform better and prefer this method of delivery compared to students enrolled …

Voltage Prediction Using A Cellular Network, Lisa L. Grant, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Better identification tools are needed for power system voltage profile prediction. the power systems of the future will see an increase in both renewable energy sources and load demand increasing the need for quick estimation of bus voltages and line power flows for system security and contingency analysis. a Cellular Simultaneous Recurrent Neural Network (CSRN) to identify and predict bus voltage dynamics is presented in this paper. the benefit of using a cellular structure over traditional neural network architectures is that the network can represent a direct mapping of any power system allowing for easier scalability to large power systems. …

Cross-Reactivity Virtual Profiling Of The Human Kinome By X-React Kin: A Chemical Systems Biology Approach, Michal Brylinski, Jeffrey Skolnick Dec 2010

Cross-Reactivity Virtual Profiling Of The Human Kinome By X-React Kin: A Chemical Systems Biology Approach, Michal Brylinski, Jeffrey Skolnick

Faculty Publications

Many drug candidates fail in clinical development due to their insufficient selectivity that may cause undesired side effects. Therefore, modern drug discovery is routinely supported by computational techniques, which can identify alternate molecular targets with a significant potential for cross-reactivity. In particular, the development of highly selective kinase inhibitors is complicated by the strong conservation of the ATP-binding site across the kinase family. In this paper, we describe X-ReactKIN, a new machine learning approach that extends the modeling and virtual screening of individual protein kinases to a system level in order to construct a cross-reactivity virtual profile for the human …

Coping And Drinking Motives In A Veteran Sample, Jordan A. Fields Dec 2010

Coping And Drinking Motives In A Veteran Sample, Jordan A. Fields

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

PTSD is highly comorbid with alcohol abuse and veterans appear to be a population at high risk for developing these problems. Maladaptive coping behaviors have been linked to the development of PTSD and alcohol abuse. Additionally, understanding more about the way one copes and why they report consuming alcohol may be important to understanding this relationship. This study examined coping style and drinking motives as mediators of PTSD-AUD (Alcohol Use Disorder) problems in 60 Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation Iraqi Freedom veterans. PTSD did not predict alcohol consumption variables. The PTSD group scored higher on drinking consequences, and drinking to cope. The …
