Conceptual And Methodological Issues Relevant To Cytokine And Inflammatory Marker Measurements In Clinical Research., Xin Zhoua, Maren S. Fragala, Janet E. Mcelhaney, George A. Kuchel

UCHC Articles - Research

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To provide clinical investigators with an understanding of factors to consider when wishing to add cytokine and inflammatory marker measurements to their studies. RECENT FINDINGS: Inflammation involves complex and coordinated responses of the immune system to tissue damage. In the absence of tools to routinely assess inflammation within living tissues, measurements of humoral factors such as cytokines and other inflammatory mediators or markers can provide predictive clinical information and insights into disease mechanisms. Historically, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) became the gold standard, yet this approach of measuring a single protein in each sample limits the amount of …

A Detailed Mathematical Model Predicts Serial Engagement Of Ige-Fcεri Complexes Can Enhance Syk Activation In Mast Cells, Michael L. Blinov Sep 2010

A Detailed Mathematical Model Predicts Serial Engagement Of Ige-Fcεri Complexes Can Enhance Syk Activation In Mast Cells, Michael L. Blinov

UCHC Articles - Research

The term serial engagement was introduced to describe the ability of a single peptide, bound to a MHC molecule, to sequentially interact with TCRs within the contact region between a T cell and an APC. In addition to ligands on surfaces, soluble multivalent ligands can serially engage cell surface receptors with sites on the ligand, binding and dissociating from receptors many times before all ligand sites become free and the ligand leaves the surface. To evaluate the role of serial engagement in Syk activation, we use a detailed mathematical model of the initial signaling cascade that is triggered when FcepsilonRI …

The 6-Minute Walk Is Associated With Frailty And Predicts Mortality In Older Adults With Heart Failure, Alison Kleppinger, Amir Ahmad, Kristen M. Annis, W. David Hager, Anne M. Kenny

UCHC Articles - Research

Heart failure is the most rapidly increasing cardiovascular disease in the US and the primary discharge diagnosis for Medicare recipients. There are approximately 5.7 million people who have the diagnosis of HF in the US.1 Heart failure constitutes the most common cause for re-hospitalization and has been identified by the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission as the highest cost to the healthcare system.2, 3 Hospitalizations of older patients can result in functional deterioration leading to dependency and disability.4, 5 Due to the unpredictable trajectory of heart failure exacerbations it is difficult to discern which patients are …

Effects Of Smoking Cessation On Body Composition In Postmenopausal Women, Alison Kleppinger, Mark D. Litt, Anne M. Kenny, Cheryl A. Oncken Sep 2010

Effects Of Smoking Cessation On Body Composition In Postmenopausal Women, Alison Kleppinger, Mark D. Litt, Anne M. Kenny, Cheryl A. Oncken

UCHC Articles - Research

Abstract

Background

Smoking cessation is associated with weight gain, but the effects of smoking cessation on measures of body composition (BC) have not been adequately evaluated. The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of 16 months of cigarette abstinence on areas of BC measured by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA).

Methods

One hundred fifty-two postmenopausal women participated in a smoking cessation study using the nicotine patch. Secondary analyses were conducted on data from 119 subjects (age 56±7 years, range 41–78 years) who had had DXA scans at baseline and 16 months later. Participants were classified either as quitters …

Crystal Structure Of The Gerbc Component Of A Bacillus Subtilis Spore Germinant Receptor, Yunfeng Li, Barbara Setlow, Peter Setlow, Bing Hao Sep 2010

Crystal Structure Of The Gerbc Component Of A Bacillus Subtilis Spore Germinant Receptor, Yunfeng Li, Barbara Setlow, Peter Setlow, Bing Hao

UCHC Articles - Research

The nutrient germinant receptors (nGRs) of spores of Bacillus species are clusters of three proteins that play a critical role in triggering the germination of dormant spores in response to specific nutrient molecules. Here we report the crystal structure of the C protein of the GerB germinant receptor, so called GerBC, of Bacillus subtilis spores at 2.3 Å resolution. The GerBC protein adopts a previously uncharacterized type of protein fold consisting of three distinct domains, each of which is centered by a β sheet surrounded by multiple α helices. Secondary structure prediction and structure-based sequence alignment suggest that the GerBC …

Discharge Of Rcra Injunctive Claims In Bankruptcy: The Seventh Circuit's Decision In United States V. Apex Oil Co., Inc., Diana E. Rdzanek Sep 2010

Discharge Of Rcra Injunctive Claims In Bankruptcy: The Seventh Circuit's Decision In United States V. Apex Oil Co., Inc., Diana E. Rdzanek

Seventh Circuit Review

In its recent decision in United States v. Apex Oil, Inc., the Seventh Circuit considered whether an injunction under an environmental statute, even one that requires significant expenditures on the part of the debtor, could ever be a "right to payment" under the Bankruptcy Code, which would allow the claim to be discharged in the bankruptcy. The Seventh Circuit answered in the negative. Since the Supreme Court's decision in Ohio v. Kovacs, the federal circuits have disagreed on the discrete issue of when a claim arises for purposes of bankruptcy with respect to clean-up injunctions under environmental laws. …

The Gatekeepers Keep Changing The Locks: Swanson V. Citibank And The Key To Stating A Plausible Claim In The Seventh Circuit Following Twombly And Iqbal, Gregory L. Grattan Sep 2010

The Gatekeepers Keep Changing The Locks: Swanson V. Citibank And The Key To Stating A Plausible Claim In The Seventh Circuit Following Twombly And Iqbal, Gregory L. Grattan

Seventh Circuit Review

In Swanson v. Citibank, the Seventh Circuit debated with new vigor how to properly interpret and apply the Supreme Court's requirement that all complaints state a plausible claim. Following the Supreme Court's decisions in Bell Atlantic Corp. v. Twombly and Ashcroft v. Iqbal, if a complaint in any civil case does not state "a claim to relief that is plausible on its face," then it fails to meet the requirements of Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 8(a)(2) and is subject to dismissal under Federal Rule 12(b)(6). In Swanson, Judge Diane Wood advocated for a liberal interpretation of …

How Less Is More: The Unraveling Of The Inextricable Intertwinement Doctrine Under United States V. Gorman, Jaime L. Padgett Sep 2010

How Less Is More: The Unraveling Of The Inextricable Intertwinement Doctrine Under United States V. Gorman, Jaime L. Padgett

Seventh Circuit Review

In July 2010, the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit explicitly abolished the long-standing doctrine of inextricable intertwinement as a basis of admissibility for other bad acts evidence. The court held in United States v. Gorman that the doctrine had "become overused, vague, and quite unhelpful" and as such, "has outlived its usefulness." The court eliminated this basis of admissibility in favor of the exclusive use of Federal Rule of Evidence 404(b). Although the two bases have different origins and initial purposes, by virtue of confusion and realities of the judicial system, the bases have come to …

Federal Preemption Of State-Law Failure-To-Warn Claims: Has The Presumption Against Preemption Gone Too Far?, Amanda N. Hart Sep 2010

Federal Preemption Of State-Law Failure-To-Warn Claims: Has The Presumption Against Preemption Gone Too Far?, Amanda N. Hart

Seventh Circuit Review

Prescription drug warning labels are regulated by both state products liability law and federal regulations imposed by the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. Often, federal law acts as a minimum standard to which states may add stricter labeling requirements. Occasionally, however, state and federal labeling requirements place a prescription drug manufacturer in a position where compliance with state products liability law causes it to violate federal regulations and vice versa. When this occurs, a decision must be made as to whether state or federal drug labeling requirements prevail. Historically, courts have taken the position that state products liability law preempted …

Intelligence Gap: Advanced Military Technology And Law Of War Compliance, Christi Siver Sep 2010

Intelligence Gap: Advanced Military Technology And Law Of War Compliance, Christi Siver

Political Science Faculty Publications

Many states justify their use of technology and tactics as consistent with international law. These appeals to legitimacy suggest that legal norms serve some role in limiting the use of force, particularly in promoting discrimination between combatants and civilians. The United States justifies drone attacks as more efficient means than the use of troops to attack suspected terrorists. Many civilian and military leaders argue that these attacks are more moral than alternative tactics because they target the individuals directly responsible for attacks on the United States and its allies. However, these justifications assume that the military has accurate intelligence. However, …

Determination Of Cyanide Exposure By Gas Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry Analysis Of Cyanide-Exposed Plasma Proteins, Stephanie L. Youso, Gary A. Rockwood, John A. Lee, Brian A. Logue Sep 2010

Determination Of Cyanide Exposure By Gas Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry Analysis Of Cyanide-Exposed Plasma Proteins, Stephanie L. Youso, Gary A. Rockwood, John A. Lee, Brian A. Logue

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Exposure to cyanide can occur in a variety of ways, including exposure to smoke from cigarettes or fires, accidental exposure during industrial processes, and exposure from the use of cyanide as a poison or chemical warfare agent. Confirmation of cyanide exposure is difficult because, in vivo, cyanide quickly breaks down by a number of pathways, including the formation of both free and protein-bound thiocyanate. A simple method was developed to confirm cyanide exposure by extraction of protein-bound thiocyanate moieties from cyanide-exposed plasma proteins. Thiocyanate was successfully extracted and subsequently derivatized with pentafluorobenzyl bromide for GC–MS analysis. Thiocyanate levels as low …

Lohas: Marketing A Green And Sustainable Way Of Living, Knowledge@Smu Sep 2010

Lohas: Marketing A Green And Sustainable Way Of Living, Knowledge@Smu

Knowledge@SMU

What prompted former corporate warriors like Adam Horler and Tay Lai Hock trade their suits for t-shirts and embrace a new way of life with green and sustainability as its central tenet? It is LOHAS, or Lifestyle of Health and Sustainability, described as a “biggest market you’ve never heard of”. In a recent talk at SMU, Horler and Tay share what is their motivation, what is the appeal of LOHAS, and how are they marketing this concept to bring more converts on board.

Development Of A New Marine Exposure Site On The Atlantic North-West Coast Of Ireland, Niall Holmes, L. Basheer, S. Nanukuttan, S. Srinivasan, Pam Basheer, J. Mccarter, M. Chrisp

Conference papers

This paper presents a new marine exposure site being developed on the North-west Atlantic coastline of Ireland in Co. Donegal by the Centre for Built Environment Research at Queen’s University Belfast. The site will initially contain a number of large precast concrete stems, each 1.5m high, 1.5m wide and 1m thick placed on concrete plinths poured in-situ. The concrete stems will be placed at three levels to achieve different exposure conditions outlined in EN 206, namely atmospheric (XS1), a splash or spray zone (XS3) and a tidal zone (XS3) where the stems will be submerged by the incoming tide twice …

The Oecd And Economic Governance: Invisibility And Impotence?, Richard Woodward Sep 2010

The Oecd And Economic Governance: Invisibility And Impotence?, Richard Woodward

Books/Book Chapters

Chapter 3 sketches the OECD's role in economic governance, in particular the pursuit of its obligation to promote policies which maximize economic growth. While the OECD's work in the economic field evolves, its mechanisms of economic governance have barely altered. Richard Woodward argues that the OECD exerts ‘subtle discipline’ over the trajectory of economic governance through the use of its soft law mechanisms such as surveillance and peer review. These mechanisms can lead to convergence in national policies and, occasionally, outbreaks of international policy coordination. Ultimately, however, the proliferation of international mechanisms of governance and the internal politics of the …

A Tale Of Two Strategies For Higher Education And Economic Recovery: Ireland And Australia, Ellen Hazelkorn, Vin Massaro Sep 2010

A Tale Of Two Strategies For Higher Education And Economic Recovery: Ireland And Australia, Ellen Hazelkorn, Vin Massaro

Conference Papers

As Dirk van Damme suggested (van Damme, 2009), the effects of the global financial crisis (GFC) have been manifold and complex and affected countries differently. Australia and Ireland have fared very differently in the GFC so choices will inevitably have been influenced by their relative capacity to spend on higher education. Since 1988 Australia has had a unitary, government-regulated but independent higher education system with block funding from a combination of government allocations and student contributions. In contrast, Ireland retains a government-regulated binary system dependent upon public investment and direct government control of staffing budgets. In recent years, both countries …

Mothers Who Use Illicit Drugs:An Exploration Of Professional Workers’ Perceptions Towards Mothers Who Use Illicit Drugs, Julieann Lane Sep 2010

Mothers Who Use Illicit Drugs:An Exploration Of Professional Workers’ Perceptions Towards Mothers Who Use Illicit Drugs, Julieann Lane

Dissertations

Although much has been written in recent times about women’s drug use, there has been a scarcity of research into motherhood and drug use in Ireland as it remains both a complex and sensitive issue. Since the 1980’s Ireland has seen a dramatic and unprecedented increase in the availability of illicit drugs. This increased availability reflects rising consumption of illicit drugs amongst women. The aim of this study was to explore the perceptions that a sample of professional workers hold of mothers who use illicit drugs in Ireland. The study reviews the literature applicable to the area of drug use …
