Community Engaged Research At The Regional Research Institute For Human Services, Diane Yatchmenoff, Laurie E. Powers Sep 2010

Community Engaged Research At The Regional Research Institute For Human Services, Diane Yatchmenoff, Laurie E. Powers

Regional Research Institute for Human Services

Participatory models of research, in which communities are actively engaged in the research process through partnerships with academic institutions, are restructuring how scientific knowledge is being created. Community engaged research, also known as, community based participatory research (CBPR), and participatory action research (PAR) is increasingly recognized as a framework for high quality scientific inquiry. In community engaged research, researchers and evaluators work side‐by‐side with community members in all phases of the research process, from defining social problems and research questions, conceptualizing research design, carrying out research, and interpreting and disseminating findings. It requires partnership development, collaboration and cooperation, and commitment …

Assessment And Preliminary Design Of A Water Supply Project For The Village Of Altos De La Paz, Honduras, Stephen M. Kolk Sep 2010

Assessment And Preliminary Design Of A Water Supply Project For The Village Of Altos De La Paz, Honduras, Stephen M. Kolk

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

A lack of access to clean, potable water is one of the greatest health threats encountered in third world countries, especially among rural populations. Annually, a staggering number of deaths, many of them children, are attributed to waterborne diseases. The Honduran village of Altos de la Paz is typical in its susceptibility to disease due to a lack of clean water. One way of solving this problem is to access the river used as the primary drinking source higher up in the watershed, upstream of any anthropogenic influences, and pipe it to each house in the village. The first step …

Exposure Evaluation Of An Aviation Gasoline Release At A Municipal Airport In Central Wisconsin, Nicole L. Marcell Sep 2010

Exposure Evaluation Of An Aviation Gasoline Release At A Municipal Airport In Central Wisconsin, Nicole L. Marcell

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

Approximately 9,600 to 10,600 gallons of aviation gasoline (avgas) were released into a shallow aquifer from a leaking underground storage tank located at a municipal airport in Central Wisconsin. A municipal wellfield that serves three neighboring communities is located approximately 3,500 to 4,000 feet downgradient of the release site. Emergency response remedial actions included the removal of contaminated soil from the source area. A sump was installed within the excavation backfill to recover free product and contaminated groundwater. Interim remediation efforts included equipping the sump with a pump and a vacuum well point system was installed. A site investigation was …

The History Of The Federal Government's Involvement In Water Resources : An Attempt To Correct Externalities?, Alyssa M. Neir Sep 2010

The History Of The Federal Government's Involvement In Water Resources : An Attempt To Correct Externalities?, Alyssa M. Neir

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

The Federal government can undermine or support state water laws and programs by asserting its legislative power to manage domestic water resources. Predicting the future thrust of the Federal government's legislative involvement in water resources can help states build flexibility into their plans and anticipate where they may be able to get Federal funds to accomplish their water management plans. This paper applies the economic concept of technological externalities to predict that future Federal involvement. The hypothesis of this paper has two parts: 1) that in addition to becoming involved in water resources management to provide public goods and promote …

Environmental Disturbance Of Oligotrophic Bacteria And Effects On Water Quality In Deep Karstic Pools, Andrea Hunter Sep 2010

Environmental Disturbance Of Oligotrophic Bacteria And Effects On Water Quality In Deep Karstic Pools, Andrea Hunter

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

Active intervention of humans in pristine water resource environments has caused both surface and ground waters to degrade in quality and natural purification capacity (Geldreich 1996). Groundwater is often considered to be less impacted than that of surface water due to the absence of climate changes and storm water migrations (Geldreich 1996). Shallow karstic limestone areas (less than 30 m deep) have a greater change of surface contamination since surface water runoff can rapidly percolate through areas lacking a protective bedrock layer.

The Group Selection Questionnaire: Discriminant Outcomes And Effectiveness, Jeffrey Lee Elder Sep 2010

The Group Selection Questionnaire: Discriminant Outcomes And Effectiveness, Jeffrey Lee Elder

Theses and Dissertations

The Group Selection Questionnaire (GSQ; Cox et al., 2004) is a measure that has been developed to facilitate clinical decisions about a client's readiness for group psychotherapy. The GSQ has demonstrated an ability to predict which clients will experience a reduction in distress through the use of group psychotherapy. This dissertation examines the Group Selection Questionnaire's ability to measure client characteristics that predict the client's ability to benefit from receiving group psychotherapy compared to the ability to benefit from receiving another form of treatment, such as individual or a combination of individual and group psychotherapy, as measured by improved scores …

Coping, Productive Time Use, And Negative Mood Among Adults With Severe Mental Illness: A Daily Diary Study, Philip T. Yanos, Michelle L. West, Stephen M. Smith Sep 2010

Coping, Productive Time Use, And Negative Mood Among Adults With Severe Mental Illness: A Daily Diary Study, Philip T. Yanos, Michelle L. West, Stephen M. Smith

Publications and Research

Most studies on coping among persons with severe mental illness have relied on retrospective self-report methods; a limitation of this methodology is susceptibility to recall bias. The purpose of the present investigation was to expand the current understanding of the impact of coping among persons with severe mental illness by examining coping strategies, mood, and social functioning (operationalized as productive time use) using a daily process design. Twenty-seven adults diagnosed with severe mental illness completed baseline clinical interviews and up to 20 days of nightly telephone interviews addressing coping and daily life. A total of 198 coping efforts were reported …

Antibacterial Activity Of Ginger Extracts And Its Essential Oil On Some Of Pathogenic Bacteria, Mohammed Ibraheem Nader, Kais Kassim Ghanima, Safaa Abdalrasool Ali, Dalia Ahmad Azhar

Baghdad Science Journal

The antimicrobial activity of ginger extracts ( cold-water, hot-water, ethanolic and essential oil ) against some of pathogenic bacteria ( Escherichia coli , Salmonella sp , Klebsiella sp , Serratia marcescens, Vibrio cholerae , Staphylococcus aureus , Streptococcus sp) was investigated using Disc diffusion method , and the results were compared with the antimicrobial activity of 12 antibiotics on the same bacteria . The results showed that the ginger extracts were more effective on gram-positive bacteria than gram-negative . V. cholerae and S. marcescens, were the most resistant bacteria to the extracts used , while highest inhibition was noticed against Streptococcus …

The Susceptibility Test Of Vaginal Yeasts And Their Relationship With The Age In Iraqi Women, Bushra J . Mohamed, Amina N. Al. Thwani

Baghdad Science Journal

This study aims to isolate the pathogenic yeasts from genital tract and investigate their relationship with the age .The results clarified that the most pathogenic yeast isolated from genital tract was Candida albicans , also the results of C.albicanas isolates susceptibility test, to different antifungal revealed that they were sensitive to Miconazole, Ketoconazole and Clotrimazol and were resistant to Nystatin and Grisofulvin. The study of relationship of vaginal infection with the age showed that the incidence of infection with Candida was high among females age group (19-39 years).
