Curated Exhibit: Absolute Poison, Laura J. Hall Sep 2010

Curated Exhibit: Absolute Poison, Laura J. Hall

Posters and Presentations

The Absolute Poison exhibit, curated by Laura J. Hall, MFA, delved into the fascinating and deadly world of poisons. From the ancient Sumerian goddess Gula, to Shakespeare’s Hamlet, and the infamous cyanide-laced Tylenol case of 1982, poisons have long held a place in our collective imagination. The exhibit explored the history, symbolism, and cultural impact of poisons, featuring materials such as Albrecht Dürer’s Adam and Eve with its skull and crossbones motif symbolizing death. On display from September 2010 to August 2011 at the UNM Domenici Center, the exhibit examined how poisons have shaped narratives of danger and mystery. September …

Assessing The Role Of Microfinance In Fostering Adaptation To Climate Change, Shardul Agrawala, Maëlis Carraro Sep 2010

Assessing The Role Of Microfinance In Fostering Adaptation To Climate Change, Shardul Agrawala, Maëlis Carraro

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

Much of the current policy debate on adaptation to climate change has focussed on estimation of adaptation costs, ways to raise and to scale-up funding for adaptation, and the design of the international institutional architecture for adaptation financing. There is however little or no emphasis so far on actual delivery mechanisms to channel these resources at the sub-national level, particularly to target the poor who are also often the most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. It is in this context that microfinance merits a closer look. This paper offers the first empirical assessment of the linkages between microfinance …

Improving Education As Key To Enhancing Adaptive Capacity In Developing Countries, Wolfgang Lutz Sep 2010

Improving Education As Key To Enhancing Adaptive Capacity In Developing Countries, Wolfgang Lutz

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

This paper summarizes new scientific evidence supporting the hypothesis that among the many factors contributing to international development, the combination of education and health stands out as a root cause on which other dimensions of development depend. Much of this recent analysis is based on new reconstructions and projections of populations by age, sex and four levels of educational attainment for more than 120 countries using the demographic method of multi-state population dynamics. It also refers to a series of systems analytical population–development–environment case studies that comprehensively assess the role of population and education factors relative to other factors in …

Community-Based Adaptation: Lessons From The Development Marketplace 2009 On Adaptation To Climate Change, Rasmus Heltberg, Radhika Prabhu, Habiba Gitay Sep 2010

Community-Based Adaptation: Lessons From The Development Marketplace 2009 On Adaptation To Climate Change, Rasmus Heltberg, Radhika Prabhu, Habiba Gitay

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

The Development Marketplace 2009 focused on adaptation to climate change. This paper identifies lessons from the Marketplace and assesses their implications for adaptation support. Our findings are based on: statistical tabulation of all proposals; in-depth qualitative and quantitative analysis of the 346 semi-finalists; and interviews with finalists and assessors. Proposals were fuelled by deep concerns that ongoing climate change and its impacts undermine development and exacerbate poverty, migration and food insecurity. Proposals addressed both local poverty and climate change challenges, and offered a wide range of approaches to render local development more resilient to current climate variability. Therefore, support to …

What Is The Value Of Hazardous Weather Forecasts? Evidence From A Survey Of Backcountry Skiers, Anna Alberini, Christoph M. Rheinberger, Andrea Leiter, Charles A. Mccormick, Andrew Mizrahi

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

What is the value of hazardous weather warnings? To answer this question, we focus on the avalanche bulletin for Switzerland issued by the WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research (SLF). We take a survey-based, non-market valuation approach to estimating the value of hypothetical improvements in avalanche forecasting. We focus on backcountry skiers because (i) safety is arguably the most important type of benefit associated with the avalanche bulletin, (ii) they voluntarily undertake risks, and (iii) they perceive themselves and are generally perceived by others as skilled in avoiding risks. The respondents’ willingness to pay (WTP) for the improved services …

Uniform Maine Citations, 2010 Edition (Superseded), Michael D. Seitzinger, Charles K. Leadbetter, Nancy A. Wanderer

Uniform Maine Citations

The 2010 edition of Uniform Maine Citations continues the effort to provide guidance for the location and proper form for citation to Maine-specific primary and secondary sources of legal research and writing. This edition represents a significant departure from the previous three editions in several important respects. First, it will be published on the Maine Law Review web site and updated at least annually to recognize new developments and new sources of Maine-related legal research. Because Uniform Maine Citations will be published and regularly updated on-line, and can be downloaded and printed from the web site, no separate print publication …

Selecting Glp-1 Agonists In The Management Of Type 2 Diabetes: Differential Pharmacology And Therapeutic Benefits Of Liraglutide And Exenatide., J Pinkney, T Fox, L Ranganath Sep 2010

Selecting Glp-1 Agonists In The Management Of Type 2 Diabetes: Differential Pharmacology And Therapeutic Benefits Of Liraglutide And Exenatide., J Pinkney, T Fox, L Ranganath

Peninsula Medical School

Failure of secretion of the incretin hormone glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) plays a prominent role in type 2 diabetes, and restoration of GLP-1 action is an important therapeutic objective. Although the short duration of action of GLP-1 renders it unsuited to therapeutic use, 2 long-acting GLP-1 receptor agonists, exenatide and liraglutide, represent a significant advance in treatment. In controlled trials, both produce short-term glucose-lowering effects, with the reduction in hemoglobin A(1c) of up to 1.3%. These responses are often superior to those observed with additional oral agents. However, unlike sulfonylureas, thiazolidinediones, or insulin, all of which lead to significant weight gain, …
