Integrating The Suburbs: A Park Forest Case Study, Joseph Houlihan

Cities in the 21st Century

The production of human living spaces operates largely within the confines of political economy. As such, myriad actors influence the economic and social character of places. And over time, places prove essentially dynamic. This paper considers the influence of political economy on the African American suburban experience during the second half of the twentieth century, focusing specifically on Park Forest, Illinois.

The Struggle For Legitimacy: Dissecting Discourse On The Expansion Of Gilo, Elise Goldin Sep 2010

The Struggle For Legitimacy: Dissecting Discourse On The Expansion Of Gilo, Elise Goldin

Cities in the 21st Century

In August 2009, the United States called for a freeze on Israeli settlements in order to promote peace talks between Israel and Palestine. Israel agreed to the settlement freeze yet less than three weeks later approved a plan by the Israel Land Administration and the Jerusalem Planning Committee to build an additional 900 houses in the town of Gilo. While much of the international community understands Gilo to be an illegal settlement built on occupied territory, Israel disputes this claim and views Gilo as a legal suburb of Jerusalem. Though many states, international organizations, and human rights groups protested Gilo’s …

Importance Of Religious Beliefs To Ethical Attitudes In Business, Tisha L. N. Emerson, Joseph A. Mckinney Sep 2010

Importance Of Religious Beliefs To Ethical Attitudes In Business, Tisha L. N. Emerson, Joseph A. Mckinney

Journal of Religion and Business Ethics

One would expect a relationship between the ethical attitudes and the religion of individuals. Published research into this relationship has found somewhat mixed results. While some studies have found a significant, positive relationship between religious belief and ethical attitudes, other studies have found either no effect or only a “marginal effect”. In this study, we investigate the relationship between religious convictions and attitudes toward ethical dilemmas. We find strong evidence to suggest that business professionals who self-report higher levels of religious importance are significantly less accepting of ethically questionable behavior – for all 16 vignettes studied. This result is far …

On The Atrophy Of Moral Reasoning In The Global Financial Crisis, Kim Hawtrey, Rutherford Johnson Sep 2010

On The Atrophy Of Moral Reasoning In The Global Financial Crisis, Kim Hawtrey, Rutherford Johnson

Journal of Religion and Business Ethics

The Global Financial Crisis - and its human toll - can be attributed to an atypical pandemic of morally sourced market failure. This paper develops a ‘moral bubble’ understanding of the sub-prime crisis, in which ethical decision-making by economic actors is marked by expediency and crowd effects. The paper revisits Adam Smith’s Theory of Moral Sentiments and shows Smith’s theory offers a helpful corrective to the ethical atrophy behind the recent credit crisis. The need to safeguard the 'soft' (moral) infrastructure of markets has significant implications for business decision-makers, for public policy, and for the role of Christian belief in …

Subsidiarity: Challenging The Top Down Bias, Scott Kelley Sep 2010

Subsidiarity: Challenging The Top Down Bias, Scott Kelley

Journal of Religion and Business Ethics

Global poverty has received significant attention in the past decade, particularly after the adoption of the United Nation's Millennium Development Goals in 2002. Commentators and ethicists like Peter Singer have long held that the wealthy of the world have an obligation to help the poor. While the sentiments may be positive, there are real harms that have come from this kind of top down thinking. Subsidiarity, to the contrary, is a much more realistic and morally tenable approach to global poverty.

“The Golden Door”: Does Business Hold The Key?, Sally A. Kenel, Ellen K. Boegel Esq. Sep 2010

“The Golden Door”: Does Business Hold The Key?, Sally A. Kenel, Ellen K. Boegel Esq.

Journal of Religion and Business Ethics

“The New Colossus,” Emma Lazarus’ poem, although a later addition to Liberty Island, has now become synonymous with the Statue of Liberty itself. Its words, however, are not without controversy. Was Lazarus arguing that the United States is morally obligated to open her door to the poor and the oppressed? If so, what role does/should business play in granting immigrants entry? The poem frames this discussion of a contemporary understanding of what it means to be human in a global society and, building on this concept, the paper evaluates current US employment-based immigration law and suggests a paradigm to assess …

Family Affairs Newsletter 2010-09-15, Zack Paakkonen

Family Affairs newsletter (2004-2016)

FAMILY AFFAIRS was a free, twice-a-month, social activities newsletter for the GLBTQI (gay/lesbian/bisexual/trans/queer/intersex) community, sent out around the 1st and 15th of each month. It covered the State of Maine only. The list was begun and maintained for many years by Jean Vermette in Bangor, and later operated by Zack Paakkonen of Portland. Over the years it evolved from a social activities newsletter into a business directory, classified ad service, and community bulletin board.

Aromatic Acid Metabolites Of Escherichia Coli K-12 Can Induce The Marrab Operon, Lon Chubiz, Christopher Rao Sep 2010

Aromatic Acid Metabolites Of Escherichia Coli K-12 Can Induce The Marrab Operon, Lon Chubiz, Christopher Rao

Biology Department Faculty Works

MarR is a key regulator of the marRAB operon involved in antibiotic resistance and solvent stress tolerance in Escherichia coli. We show that two metabolic intermediates, 2,3-dihydroxybenzoate and anthranilate, involved in enterobactin and tryptophan biosynthesis, respectively, can activate marRAB transcription. We also found that a third intermediate involved in ubiquinone biosynthesis, 4-hydroxybenzoate, activates marRAB transcription in the absence of TolC. Of the three, however, only 2,3-dihydroxybenzoate directly binds MarR and affects its activity.

The Anchor, Volume 124.03: September 15, 2010, Hope College

The Anchor: 2010

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Does Customer Service Training Influence Patient Satisfaction Scores?, Beth Holman Sep 2010

Does Customer Service Training Influence Patient Satisfaction Scores?, Beth Holman

Theses and Graduate Projects

Competition in ambulatory health care is challenging leaders to focus their energies on increasing patient satisfaction at all levels of the patient experience. Gaining new and retaining established patients is essential to staying viable in this dynamic health care environment. A qualitative research study was conducted to determine if training staff in customer service principles would increase patient satisfaction. Patient surveys were conducted before and after training of staff. Patient comments regarding interactions with staff from the first survey determined the training materials. The second survey was conducted after the training. In the first survey,6,8% of the surveys contained dissatisfying …
