Sociology, Economics, And Gender: Can Knowledge Of The Past Contribute To A Better Future?, Julie A. Nelson Oct 2010

Sociology, Economics, And Gender: Can Knowledge Of The Past Contribute To A Better Future?, Julie A. Nelson

Economics Faculty Publication Series

This essay explores the profoundly gendered nature of the split between the disciplines of economics and sociology which took place in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, emphasizing implications for the relatively new field of economic sociology. Drawing on historical documents and feminist studies of science, it investigates the gendered processes underlying the divergence of the disciplines in definition, method, and degree of engagement with social problems. Economic sociology has the potential to heal this disciplinary split, but only if the field is broadened, deepened, and made wiser and more self-reflective through the use of feminist analysis.

In Memoriam: Gil Friedman, Harvey Starr Oct 2010

In Memoriam: Gil Friedman, Harvey Starr

Faculty Publications

Gil Friedman, lecturer in political science at Tel Aviv University, passed away on July 16, 2009, at the age of 42 after a short bout with cancer. Much too young, and with so much promise, Gil's death was an unexpected shock to his relatives, friends, and colleagues. His loss is all the more tragic because those who knew Gil were struck by his seemingly boundless energy, his enormous intellectual curiosity, his constant stream of ideas, and his incredible work ethic—all fed by a seemingly insatiable desire to read everything (ever) written in the areas of his current interest.

Paclitaxel And Obatoclax Synergize To Kill Paclitaxel-Resistant Small Cell Lung Cancer Cells, Neil Manimala Oct 2010

Paclitaxel And Obatoclax Synergize To Kill Paclitaxel-Resistant Small Cell Lung Cancer Cells, Neil Manimala

Honors Thesis and Capstone Projects

Small molecule BH3 mimetic obatoclax (GX15-070) enhances the chemotherapeutic action of paclitaxel by increasing in vitro occurrence of Type I cell death (apoptosis) in selected small cell lung cancer (SCLC) lines. SCLC is historically resistant to paclitaxel treatment, yielding only single-digit response rates in second line chemotherapy. This resistance is attributed to a paclitaxel-induced upregulation of mitochondrial pro-survival protein bcl-xL. To increase SCLC response rates to taxol treatment, it is important to find a therapeutic modality that disables the bcl-xL line of defense against apoptosis. It was hypothesized that a combination of paclitaxel and obatoclax would synergize to enhance in …

Increasing The Visibility Of The Library Within The Academic Research Enterprise, Annette M. Healy

Library Scholarly Publications

Academic libraries support their universities' goals of developing and maintaining successful research programs. As the information landscape and researcher practices change, recognition of the library's role in supporting research may be diminishing. This article will explore some aspects of the academic research enterprise and identify opportunities libraries can use to position themselves as key members of the research enterprise as well as increase their visibility among the research community. Successful initiatives implemented at Wayne State University will be highlighted to illustrate strategies librarians can use at their own institutions.

The Relationship Between Measures Of Operations Efficiency And Financial Success Of Truckload Motor Carriers: An Empirical Analysis, Ahren Johnston Oct 2010

The Relationship Between Measures Of Operations Efficiency And Financial Success Of Truckload Motor Carriers: An Empirical Analysis, Ahren Johnston

Journal of Transportation Management

This research paper examines the statistical relationship between clay to day performance and effi ciency measures and financial performance in the motor carrier industry. Key findings are that carriers with more miles per tractor per year, a larger average length of haul, more revenue per mile, and more revenue per tractor per week tend to perform better financially as measured in three separate models by operating ratio, return on assets, or return on equity. Unexpectedly, for the eight publicly traded carriers included in the analysis, there was a negative relationship between empty mile percentage and financial performance, indicating that carriers …

Trip Patterns In Akure, Nigeria: A Land-Use Analytical Approach, A.O. Owolabi

Journal of Transportation Management

For transportation planners, the use of Origin-Destination (OD) matrix adjustment, is receiving considerable attention. However, there are concerns about the validity of results, primarily related to the number and location of traffic count posts. This leads to the question “What would be the best set of traffic count posts to use in OD matrix adjustment modules?” It has been proved that solving this problem is cumbersome. There have been several attempts (either exact or heuristic approaches) to address this problem. But due to the inherent complexities, there is no efficient and easy-to-use methodology able to address situations on the scale …

Leg Ulcers In Sickle Cell Disease., Caterina P Minniti, James Eckman, Paola Sebastiani, Martin H Steinberg, Samir K. Ballas

Department of Medicine Faculty Papers

Sickle cell disease is a single amino acid molecular disorder of hemoglobin leading to its pathological polymerization, red cell rigidity that causes poor microvascular blood flow, with consequent tissue ischemia and infarction. The manifestations of this disease are protean.Among them, leg ulcers represent a particularly disabling and chronic complication, often associated with a more severe clinical course.Despite the fact that this complication has been recognized since the early times of SCD, there has been little improvement in the efficacy of its management and clinical outcome over the past 100 years. Recently, vasculopathic abnormalities involving abnormal vascular tone and activated, adhesive …

Alternative Therapies For Perinatal Care: A Holistic Approach To Pregnancy, Devon C. Neumann

Honors Projects

This paper explores the many of the alternative and naturopathic options available for pregnancy, labor and delivery, and postpartum care and the advantages this type of care presents. The research discussed shows that many of these options can be very beneficial to the patient as well as being more accessible when travel restrictions are an issue, such as in the case of a patient living in a rural geographically isolated area. This paper discusses such therapy options as massage, music therapy, yoga, relaxation, acupuncture, acupressure, herbal remedies, hypnosis, and telecare as well as their implications for the healthcare team involved, …

Circadian Disruption And Metabolic Disease: Findings From Animal Models, Deanna M. Arble, Kathryn Moynihan Ramsey, Joseph Bass, Fred W. Turek

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Social opportunities and work demands have caused humans to become increasingly active during the late evening hours, leading to a shift from the predominantly diurnal lifestyle of our ancestors to a more nocturnal one. This voluntarily decision to stay awake long into the evening hours leads to circadian disruption at the system, tissue, and cellular levels. These derangements are in turn associated with clinical impairments in metabolic processes and physiology. The use of animal models for circadian disruption provides an important opportunity to determine mechanisms by which disorganization in the circadian system can lead to metabolic dysfunction in response to …
