An Improved Layer-By-Layer Self-Assembly Technique To Generate Biointerfaces For Platelet Adhesion Studies: Dynamic Lbl, Juan Manuel Lopez Oct 2010

An Improved Layer-By-Layer Self-Assembly Technique To Generate Biointerfaces For Platelet Adhesion Studies: Dynamic Lbl, Juan Manuel Lopez

Doctoral Dissertations

Layer-by-layer self-assembly (LbL) is a technique that generates engineered nano-scale films, coatings, and particles. These nanoscale films have recently been used in multiple biomedical applications. Concurrently, microfabrication methods and advances in microfluidics are being developed and combined to create "Lab-on-a-Chip" technologies. The potential to perform complex biological assays in vitro as a first-line screening technique before moving on to animal models has made the concept of lab on a chip a valuable research tool.

Prior studies in the Biofluids Laboratory at Louisiana Tech have used layer-by-layer and in vitro biological assays to study thrombogenesis in a controlled, repeatable, engineered environment. …

AQ-Pal14 is a 30-residue polypeptide that was designed to form an alpha-helical coiled coil that contains a metal-binding 4-pyridylalanine residue on its solvent-exposed surface. However, characterization of this peptide shows that it exists as a three-stranded coiled coil, not a two-stranded one as predicted from its design. Reaction with cobalt(III) protoporphyrin IX (Co-PPIX) produces a six-coordinate Co-PPIX(AQ-Pal 14)(2) species that creates two coiled-coil oligomerization domains Coordinated to opposite laces of the porphyrin ring. It is found that this species undergoes a buffer-dependent Self-assembly process: nanometer-scale globular materials were formed when these components were reacted in unbuffered H(2)O, while millimeter-scale, rod-like …

Primary Chiasmal Sarcoid Granuloma Masquerading As Glioma Of The Optic Chiasm, Muhammad Zubair Tahir, Farheen Shaikh, Arshad Ali Siddiqui

Section of Neurosurgery

A 37-year-old woman presented with a 6 months history of headaches and memory impairment. Examination showed no neurological deficit with normal vision. MRI scans showed an enlarged optic chiasm. There was no dural or leptomeningeal enhancement or hydrocephalus. Open biopsy of the suprasellar mass showed non-caseating chronic granulomatous inflammation compatible with sarcoidosis. Systemic features of sarcoid were absent. Patient showed marked improvement on steroid therapy.

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Our objectives were to evaluate kinase insert domain protein receptor (KDR)-β-galactosidase (LacZ) expression as a marker for vascular development during gonadal morphogenesis and to determine whether any novel non-angiogenic KDR-LacZ expression was present in mouse testes or ovaries. Gonads were collected from mice expressing LacZ driven by the Kdr promoter (KDRLacZ) from embryonic day 11 (E11) through postnatal day 60 (P60). At E11.5, mesonephric cells expressing KDR-LacZ seemed to migrate into the developing testis and surrounded developing seminiferous cords. Cells expressing KDR-LacZ appeared in the ovary with no apparent migration from the adjacent mesonephros, suggesting a different origin of endothelial …

International Clinical Guidelines At The American University Of Beirut, Physical Therapy Department: Strategy Of Implementation And Evaluation, Claude E. Maroun, Marie T. Aouad, Maria W. G. Nijhuis-Van Der Sanden, Rob Ab Oostendorp

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Purpose. The purpose of the study is (1) to describe the selection process of an international clinical guideline (CGL) for patients with low back pain (LBP) for adoption and implementation at the Physical Therapy Department at the American University of Beirut Medical Center (AUBMC), and (2) to evaluate the physiotherapists’ compliance. Method. International guidelines were identified through a literature search and compared according to the AGREE instrument for selection. Quality indicators were selected. Physiotherapists were educated about guidelines’ benefits and the content of the adopted guidelines during interactive sessions; patients’ files were optimized and audited in order to evaluate compliance. …

Teaching And Research Within Further Education Colleges: Chalk And Cheese?, M Mason, J Bardsley, J Mann, R Turner

Plymouth Institute of Education

The expansion of Higher Education (HE) into Further Education (FE) Colleges has resulted in college lecturers with responsibility for teaching HE courses experiencing considerable changes in their working practices. College lecturers have worked collaboratively with universities to develop HE courses and been presented with opportunities to engage in scholarly activity and research. This paper draws on the experience of a group of college lecturers who undertook research into aspects of their teaching practice through an initiative introduced by the Higher Education Learning Partnerships (HELP) Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL). Through a series of semi-structured interviews, this paper …
