Understanding Social Capital Development And Academic Attainment Of Mobile Students, Julie A. Gaddie Oct 2010

Understanding Social Capital Development And Academic Attainment Of Mobile Students, Julie A. Gaddie

Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The United Sates has a long history of searching for utopian possibilities of public school, amidst a steady stream of population mobility. Horace Mann proclaimed that schools would be able to assimilate the millions of immigrants arriving during the late 1700’s. He promised that schools could end poverty, crime and social injustice. Today, public schools continue to serve a revolving door of students and most agree there may be little that can be done to prevent student mobility amidst the complexities of a growing global economy, immigration and the increase in children living in poverty. The challenge for the public …

After Hurricanes Katrina And Rita: Gender Differences In Health And Religiosity In Middle-Aged And Older Adults, Jennifer Silva Brown, Katie E. Cherry, Loren D. Marks, Erin M. Jackson, Julia Volaufova, Christina Lefante, S. Michal Jazwinski

Faculty Publications

We examined health-related quality of life in adults in the Louisiana Health Aging Study (LHAS) after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita (HK/R) that made landfall on the U.S. Gulf Coast region in 2005. Analyses of pre- and post-disaster SF-36 scores yielded changes in physical function and bodily pain. Mental health scores were lower for women than men. Gender differences were observed in religious beliefs and religious coping, favoring women. Religious beliefs and religious coping were negatively correlated with physical function, implying that stronger reliance on religiosity as a coping mechanism may be more likely among those who are less physically capable. …

Deep-Uv Led And Laser Fluorescence Apparatus For Monitoring Water Quality, Dennis K. Killinger, Anna Sharikova, Vasanthi Sivaprakasam Oct 2010

Deep-Uv Led And Laser Fluorescence Apparatus For Monitoring Water Quality, Dennis K. Killinger, Anna Sharikova, Vasanthi Sivaprakasam

USF Patents

A method for detecting trace levels of dissolved organic compounds and leached plastic compounds in drinking water includes the steps of employing deep ultraviolet light-emitting diode induced fluorescence at sensitivity levels of several parts per trillion in real time so that a more compact and inexpensive excitation source, relative to a deep UV laser-induced fluorescence, for fluorescence detection of dissolved organic compounds in water is provided. The deep UV light-emitting diode is operated at an excitation near 265 nm and the laser induced fluorescence is detected at an emission near 450 nm to 500 nm for the dissolved organic compounds …

High-Intensity Mechanical Therapy For Loss Of Knee Extension For Worker's Compensation And Non-Compensation Patients, Amanda L. Dempsey, Thomas P. Branch, Timothy Mills, Robert M. Karsch Oct 2010

High-Intensity Mechanical Therapy For Loss Of Knee Extension For Worker's Compensation And Non-Compensation Patients, Amanda L. Dempsey, Thomas P. Branch, Timothy Mills, Robert M. Karsch

Orthopaedic Surgery and Sports Medicine Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Knee flexion contractures have been associated with increased pain and a reduced ability to perform activities of daily living. Contractures can be treated either surgically or conservatively, but these treatment options may not be as successful with worker's compensation patients. The purposes of retrospective review were to 1) determine the efficacy of using adjunctive high-intensity stretch (HIS) mechanical therapy to treat flexion contractures, and 2) compare the results between groups of worker's compensation and non-compensation patients.

METHODS: Fifty-six patients (19 women, 37 men, age = 51.5 ± 17.0 years) with flexion contractures were treated with HIS mechanical therapy as …

Body Depilation Among Women And Men: The Association Of Body Hair Reduction Or Removal With Body Satisfaction, Appearance Comparison, Body Image Disturbance, And Body Dysmorphic Disorder Symptomatology, Michael Scott Boroughs Oct 2010

Body Depilation Among Women And Men: The Association Of Body Hair Reduction Or Removal With Body Satisfaction, Appearance Comparison, Body Image Disturbance, And Body Dysmorphic Disorder Symptomatology, Michael Scott Boroughs

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Body depilation, or the reduction or removal of body hair, is a relatively new area of research inquiry. Although women in many industrialized cultures have engaged in depilation for several decades, this behavior has been documented only recently among men. Though originally thought to be widely practiced by women and only a small proportion of men, including athletes or bodybuilders, recent studies suggest that more men engage in body depilation than previously hypothesized. In fact, one recent study estimated the prevalence of men's body depilation at 83.7% which suggests that men are depilating at rates similar to women. Nevertheless sparse …

Social Responsibility As A Driver For Local Sustainable Development, Elena Costantino, Maria Paola Marchello, Cecilia Mezzano Oct 2010

Social Responsibility As A Driver For Local Sustainable Development, Elena Costantino, Maria Paola Marchello, Cecilia Mezzano

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

The increased interconnection among local and global players induced by globalization, as well as the need for a complete application of the “subsidiarity principle”, calls for a re-thinking of the “corporate social responsibility” concept. This new concept broadens the perspective of the single company interacting with its own stakeholders in relation to specific social and environmental impacts, to a network of organizations, with different aims and natures, collaborating on relevant sustainability issues. In this paper, the authors will provide a definition of “Territorial Social Responsibility”, sustaining the multi-stakeholder approach as a driver toward local sustainable development. Firstly, theoretical approaches to …

Path Dependence, Institutions And The Density Of Economic Activities: Evidence From Italian Cities, Marco Percoco Oct 2010

Path Dependence, Institutions And The Density Of Economic Activities: Evidence From Italian Cities, Marco Percoco

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

In recent years a growing body of literature has begun to consider the possible presence of path dependence in the development processes of countries. This phenomenon has always been recognized in regional and urban studies because the path of development almost naturally follows a history-dependent spatial diffusion influenced by both physical geography and the quality of institutions. In this paper, I consider the case of firm concentration in Italy and its impact on local development. A large and growing literature has argued in favour of persisting effects of past institutions on current outcomes. Hence, in order to identify the impact …

Biodiversity Valuation In Developing Countries: A Focus On Small Island Developing States (Sids), Sonja S. Teelucksingh, Paulo A.L.D. Nunes Oct 2010

Biodiversity Valuation In Developing Countries: A Focus On Small Island Developing States (Sids), Sonja S. Teelucksingh, Paulo A.L.D. Nunes

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

The Millennium Development Goals explicitly recognise “sustainable development” as a target. A step towards this is a greater understanding of the significant role of biodiversity in rural communities of developing countries who depend most on the ecosystem goods and services and who as a result may suffer most from its continued degradation. Understanding the input of biodiversity in developing countries to the provision of the ecosystem goods and services (EGS) that are essential to their human well-being is seen as a significant first step in sustainable development, and environmental valuation is a necessary tool for achieving this objective. However, valuing …
