Brachytherapy Seed And Applicator Localization Via Iterative Forward Projection Matching Algorithm Using Digital X-Ray Projections, Damodar Pokhrel Oct 2010

Brachytherapy Seed And Applicator Localization Via Iterative Forward Projection Matching Algorithm Using Digital X-Ray Projections, Damodar Pokhrel

Theses and Dissertations

Interstitial and intracavitary brachytherapy plays an essential role in management of several malignancies. However, the achievable accuracy of brachytherapy treatment for prostate and cervical cancer is limited due to the lack of intraoperative planning and adaptive replanning. A major problem in implementing TRUS-based intraoperative planning is an inability of TRUS to accurately localize individual seed poses (positions and orientations) relative to the prostate volume during or after the implantation. For the locally advanced cervical cancer patient, manual drawing of the source positions on orthogonal films can not localize the full 3D intracavitary brachytherapy (ICB) applicator geometry. A new iterative forward …

Membrane Anchoring Subunits Specify Selective Regulation Of Rgs9·Gbeta5 Gap Complex In Photoreceptor Neurons, Yan Cao, Alexander V. Kolesnikov, Ikuo Masuho, Vladimir J. Kefalov, Kirill A. Martemyanov

The RGS9·Gβ5 complex is the key regulator of neuronal G-protein signaling and shows remarkable selectivity of subunit composition. In retinal photoreceptors, RGS9·Gβ5 is bound to the membrane anchor R9AP and the complex regulates visual signaling. In the basal ganglia neurons, RGS9·Gβ5 is instead associated with a homologous protein, R7BP, and regulates reward circuit. Switching this selective subunit composition of the complex in rod photoreceptors allowed us to study the molecular underpinning of signaling specificity in diverse G-protein pathways. We have found that both membrane anchoring subunits play a conserved role in regulating protein levels of RGS9·Gβ5 and enhancing the ability …

Functional imaging studies in humans have localized the motor-hand region to a neuroanatomical landmark call the KNOB within the precentral gyrus. It has also been reported that the KNOB is larger in the hemisphere contralateral to an individual's preferred hand, and therefore may represent the neural substrate for handedness. The KNOB has also been neuronatomically described in chimpanzees and other great apes and is similarly associated with handedness. However, whether the chimpanzee KNOB represents the hand region is unclear from the extant literature. Here, we used PET to quantify neural metabolic activity in chimpanzees when engaged in unilateral reach-and-grasping responses …

Genome-Wide Patterns Of Gene Expression During Aging In The African Malaria Vector Anopheles Gambiae, Mei Hui Wang, Osvaldo Marinotti, Anthony A. James, Edward Walker, John Githure, Guiyun Yan Oct 2010

Genome-Wide Patterns Of Gene Expression During Aging In The African Malaria Vector Anopheles Gambiae, Mei Hui Wang, Osvaldo Marinotti, Anthony A. James, Edward Walker, John Githure, Guiyun Yan

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

The primary means of reducing malaria transmission is through reduction in longevity in days of the adult female stage of the Anopheles vector. However, assessing chronological age is limited to crude physiologic methods which categorize the females binomially as either very young (nulliparous) or not very young (parous). Yet the epidemiologically relevant reduction in life span falls within the latter category. Age-grading methods that delineate chronological age, using accurate molecular surrogates based upon gene expression profiles, will allow quantification of the longevity-reducing effects of vector control tools aimed at the adult, female mosquito. In this study, microarray analyses of gene …

Developmental Dysplasia Of The Hip., Shahryar Noordin, Masood Umer, Kamran Hafeez, Haq Nawaz Oct 2010

Developmental Dysplasia Of The Hip., Shahryar Noordin, Masood Umer, Kamran Hafeez, Haq Nawaz

Department of Surgery Docs

Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is a spectrum of anatomical abnormalities of the hip joint in which the femoral head has an abnormal relationship with the acetabulum. Most studies report an incidence of 1 to 34 cases per 1,000 live births and differences could be due to different diagnostic methods and timing of evaluation. Risk factors include first born status, female sex, positive family history, breech presentation and oligohydramnios. Clinical presentations of DDH depend on the age of the child. Newborns present with hip instability, infants have limited hip abduction on examination, and older children and adolescents present with …

The Year In Economics At The Fcc: A National Plan For Broadband, Jonathan Baker, Paul De Sa Oct 2010

The Year In Economics At The Fcc: A National Plan For Broadband, Jonathan Baker, Paul De Sa

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

The past year in economics at the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has focused on encouraging the adoption and deployment of high capacity Internet access and the associated networks, commonly termed “broadband.” Our article sketches important economic themes in the FCC’s National Broadband Plan to show how the application of basic principles of regulatory economics takes account of rapid technological change. We discuss natural monopoly regulation, externalities and cross-subsidies, network effects and interconnection, the allocation of scarce inputs, protecting and fostering competitive markets, and consumer protection and transparency as they apply to the development of broadband.

Premium Assistance: An Update, Cynthia Shirk Oct 2010

Premium Assistance: An Update, Cynthia Shirk

National Health Policy Forum

This background paper explores the use of premium assistance in publicly financed health insurance coverage programs. In Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program, premium assistance involves using federal and state funds to subsidize premiums for the purchase of private insurance coverage for eligible individuals. This paper reviews the statutory authority for premium assistance, including two new options made available under the Children’s Health Insurance Program Reauthorization Act of 2009. It examines the status of premium assistance programs in the states and offers some insights into how premium assistance programs may fare under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

Octopamine Neuromodulatory Effects On A Social Behavior Decision-Making Network In Drosophila Males, Sarah J. Certel, Adelaine Leung, Chih-Yung Lin, Philip Perez, Ann-Shyn Chiang, Edward A. Kravitz

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Situations requiring rapid decision-making in response to dynamic environmental demands occur repeatedly in natural environments. Neuromodulation can offer important flexibility to the output of neural networks in coping with changing conditions, but the contribution of individual neuromodulatory neurons in social behavior networks remains relatively unknown. Here we manipulate the Drosophila octopaminergic system and assay changes in adult male decision-making in courtship and aggression paradigms. When the functional state of OA neural circuits is enhanced, males exhibit elevated courtship behavior towards other males in both behavioral contexts. Eliminating the expression of the male form of the neural sex determination factor, Fruitless …
