Pitman, Richard M. Demay, Pamela Archuletta, Vinod B. Shidham

Department of Pathology

The confusion centered around appropriate use of the CPT billing code 88172 is addressed in the commentary from the Economic and Government Affairs Committee of the American Society of Cytopathology (ASC) who have written a timely commentary in this issue of Cytojournal,“Adequate Reimbursement is Crucial to Support Cost-Effective Rapid Onsite Cytopathology Evaluations”. Currently, lack of standardized use within and between pathology departments is stirring unhealthy practices of denying reimbursements for this critical and legitimate cytopathology service. This editorial discusses the important concerns raised in this commentary and recommends immediate corrective action. (See also Al-Abbadi MA, et al. Adequate reimbursement is …

Predator Functional Response Changed By Induced Defenses In Prey, Edd Hammill, Owen L. Petchey, Bradley R. Anholt Oct 2010

Predator Functional Response Changed By Induced Defenses In Prey, Edd Hammill, Owen L. Petchey, Bradley R. Anholt

Watershed Sciences Faculty Publications

Functional responses play a central role in the nature and stability of predator‐prey population dynamics. Here we investigate how induced defenses affect predator functional responses. In experimental communities, prey (Paramecium) expressed two previously undocumented inducible defenses—a speed reduction and a width increase—in response to nonlethal exposure to predatory Stenostomum. Nonlethal exposure also changed the shape of the predator’s functional response from Type II to Type III, consistent with changes in the density dependence of attack rates. Handling times were also affected by prey defenses, increasing at least sixfold. These changes show that induced changes in prey have a real defensive …

Vitamin D Binding Protein-Macrophage Activating Factor Directly Inhibits Proliferation, Migration, And Upar Expression Of Prostate Cancer Cells, Kalvin J. Gregory, Bing Zhao, Diane R. Bielenberg, Sami Dridi, Jason Wu, Weihua Jiang, Bin Huang, Steven Pirie-Shepherd, Michael Fannon Oct 2010

Vitamin D Binding Protein-Macrophage Activating Factor Directly Inhibits Proliferation, Migration, And Upar Expression Of Prostate Cancer Cells, Kalvin J. Gregory, Bing Zhao, Diane R. Bielenberg, Sami Dridi, Jason Wu, Weihua Jiang, Bin Huang, Steven Pirie-Shepherd, Michael Fannon

Ophthalmology and Visual Science Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Vitamin D binding protein-macrophage activating factor (DBP-maf) is a potent inhibitor of tumor growth. Its activity, however, has been attributed to indirect mechanisms such as boosting the immune response by activating macrophages and inhibiting the blood vessel growth necessary for the growth of tumors.

METHODS AND FINDINGS: In this study we show for the first time that DBP-maf exhibits a direct and potent effect on prostate tumor cells in the absence of macrophages. DBP-maf demonstrated inhibitory activity in proliferation studies of both LNCaP and PC3 prostate cancer cell lines as well as metastatic clones of these cells. Flow cytometry …

Chitosan Wound Dressing, Simon J. Mccarthy, Kenton W. Gregroy, William P. Wiesmann, Todd D. Campbell

Technology Transfer - Patents

This invention is directed to advanced hemorrhage control wound dressings, and methods of using and producing same. The subject wound dressing is constructed from a non-mammalian material for control of severe 5 bleeding. The wound dressing for controlling severe bleeding is formed of a biomaterial comprising chitosan, a hydrophilic polymer, a polyacrylic polymer or a combination thereof, The kind of severe, life-threatening bleeding contemplated by this invention is typically of the type not capable of being stanched when a conventional gauze wound dressing is applied with conventional 10 pressure to the subject wound. The wound dressing being capable of substantially …

The Evidence-Based Scholarly Communications Conference: Capitalizing On The Unique Role Of Information Professionals In Translational Research, Philip J. Kroth, Holly E. Phillips, D. Eldredge

Evidence Based Scholarly Communications Conference

Objective: The Evidence-Based Scholarly Communication Conference (EBSCC) was held March 11-12, 2010 in Albuquerque, NM. The conference address the perceived gap in knowledge and training for scholarly communication principles in the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) Program. This poster summarizes the preliminary results from the conferences novel evaluation plan. The surveys assessed baseline knowledge, initial activity related to conference topics, conference evaluation, immediate to short-term local adoption of learned practices, and posed questions about future actions. Methods: The evaluation plan consisted of one pre-conference and a two phased, post-conference, web-based surveys. No on-site conference …

Quantitative Trait Loci Mapping Reveals Candidate Pathways Regulating Cell Cycle Duration In Plasmodium Falciparum, Heather B. Reilly Ayala, Mark A. Wacker, Geoffrey Siwo, Michael T. Ferdig

Faculty Publications - Department of Biological & Molecular Science

Background: Elevated parasite biomass in the human red blood cells can lead to increased malaria morbidity. The genes and mechanisms regulating growth and development of Plasmodium falciparum through its erythrocytic cycle are not well understood. We previously showed that strains HB3 and Dd2 diverge in their proliferation rates, and here use quantitative trait loci mapping in 34 progeny from a cross between these parent clones along with integrative bioinformatics to identify genetic loci and candidate genes that control divergences in cell cycle duration. Results: Genetic mapping of cell cycle duration revealed a four-locus genetic model, including a major genetic effect …
