College of Education Theses and Dissertations
The research on the potential relationship of the Northwest Evaluation Association's Measures of Academic Progress (NWEA MAP) and the Illinois Standards Achievement Test (ISAT) was conducted in two phases and focused on middle schools with a grade configuration of 6-8 in the state of Illinois. The first phase of the research examined whether or not a significant relationship existed between NWEA MAP test participation by middle schools in Illinois, and ISAT growth over time. A total of 86 schools were involved in the research associated with Phase 1. The second phase of the study aimed to find out if the …
Parental Involvement In A New Environment: Igbo Families In Chicago And The Education Of Their Children—A Narrative Inquiry, Obiefuna Onwughalu
Parental Involvement In A New Environment: Igbo Families In Chicago And The Education Of Their Children—A Narrative Inquiry, Obiefuna Onwughalu
College of Education Theses and Dissertations
Parents, family, school and community have overlapping spheres of influence in the education of children (Epstein, 2001). Schooling isolated from the home will have significant consequences for child behavior and development (Bronfenbrenner, 1979). A fact of life is that a people’s socio-political, cultural and historical life situation, context or environment, or ecological systems (Bronfenbrenner, 1977) affects their way of life.
This study seeks to understand the nature of parental engagement of Igbo families, a newer immigrant community in Chicago, in the education of their children. All immigrants are not the same, and knowing about Igbo experiences will enable scholars and …

A Survey Of State Renewable Portfolio Standards: Square Pegs For Round Climate Change-Holes?, Ivan Gold, Nidhi Thakar
A Survey Of State Renewable Portfolio Standards: Square Pegs For Round Climate Change-Holes?, Ivan Gold, Nidhi Thakar
William & Mary Environmental Law and Policy Review
Thirty states now have renewable portfolios standards that require generators of electricity to increase their use of renewable energy. Originally intended to promote “energy independence” and other environmental goals, today the programs are among the few U.S. programs which respond to the threat of global warming. This article considers how they work and whether they are effective. It concludes that, in the absence of comprehensive international or federal greenhouse gas controls, renewable portfolio standards are an effective and productive means to retard global warming.
Canine Heartworm (Dirofilaria Immitis, Leidy) And Risk Of Infection In Human, S. Tiawsirisup
Canine Heartworm (Dirofilaria Immitis, Leidy) And Risk Of Infection In Human, S. Tiawsirisup
Chulalongkorn Medical Journal
Canine heartworm (Dirofilaria immitis) is a filarial nematode which dogs, cats and some wildlife creatures are definitive hosts, and humans are accidental hosts. Life cycle of this nematode involves the development in the mosquito vector. Microfilaria released from a female nematode can be found in the definitive host's blood circulation and is required to develop into the third or infective stage larva in the mosquito. Infective stage larva will be released from infected mosquito's mouthpart into the host's skin during the course of taking the blood meal, develop into an adult stage in the definitive host, and reside in the …

Partnership For The Americas: Western Hemisphere Strategy And U.S. Southern Command, James G. Stavridis
Partnership For The Americas: Western Hemisphere Strategy And U.S. Southern Command, James G. Stavridis
Books
Since its creation in 1963, United States Southern Command has been led by 30 senior officers representing all four of the armed forces. None has undertaken his leadership responsibilities with the cultural sensitivity and creativity demonstrated by Admiral Jim Stavridis during his tenure in command.
Breaking with tradition, Admiral Stavridis discarded the customary military model as he organized the Southern Command Headquarters. In its place he created an organization designed not to subdue adversaries, but instead to build durable and enduring partnerships with friends. His observation that it is the business of Southern Command to launch “ideas not missiles” into …

The Effects Of Phosphorus, Copper, And Plant Age On Mycorrhizal Abundance In Orchid Roots, November 2010, Nathan Jespersen
The Effects Of Phosphorus, Copper, And Plant Age On Mycorrhizal Abundance In Orchid Roots, November 2010, Nathan Jespersen
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Mycorrhizae increase growth and nutrient acquisition in orchids. I study which factors affect mycorrhizal infestation. I organized three experiments: the first used wild orchids assumed to already be colonized by mycorrhizae and tested how receiving a nutrient solution that emphasized phosphorus affected mycorrhizae abundance. The second tested this same hypothesis with the exception that plants were initially devoid of mycorrhizae. It also tested how adept plants with and without mycorrhizae were at absorbing heavy metals such as copper and manganese from the soil to determine mycorrhizae’s remediation abilities. The third experiment focused on how age differences of plants affected mycorrhizae …

Air Pollution And Light Exposure: Lichen Species Richness, Abundance, And Diversity In San Luis, Costa Rica, November 2010, Sarah Strattan
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Lichens are a unique and diverse group of organisms that can be bioindicators of atmospheric pollution. In this study, the effects of atmospheric pollution on lichen abundance, richness, and diversity were determined for lichens growing on rocks and fence posts in San Luis, Costa Rica. Lichens growing on rocks from a secondary forest were subjected to large amounts of ATV exhaust, and the effects of the exhaust on the lichens were observed over 22 days. Lichen species richness and abundance were quantified on fence posts along two sections of dirt road: one with high vehicle traffic and one low. Additionally, …

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Changes In The Structure And Function Of Microbial Communities In Drinking Water Treatment Bioreactors Upon Addition Of Phosphorus, Xu Li, Giridhar Upadhyaya, Wangki Yuen, Jess Brown, Eberhard Morgenroth, Lutgarde Raskin
Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Faculty Publications
Phosphorus was added as a nutrient to bench-scale and pilot-scale biologically active carbon (BAC) reactors operated for perchlorate and nitrate removal from contaminated groundwater. The two bioreactors responded similarly to phosphorus addition in terms of microbial community function (i.e., reactor performance), while drastically different responses in microbial community structure were detected. Improvement in reactor performance with respect to perchlorate and nitrate removal started within a few days after phosphorus addition for both reactors. Microbial community structures were evaluated using molecular techniques targeting 16S rRNA genes. Clone library results showed that the relative abundance of perchlorate-reducing bacteria (PRB) Dechloromonas and Azospira …
Evaluating Summer School Programs And The Effect On Student Achievement: The Correlation Between Stanford-10 Standardized Test Scores And Two Different Summer Programs, Brian J. Koop
Dissertations
School districts looking for ways to minimize summer learning loss have implemented a variety of programs to combat this problem. Since No Child Left Behind and the need for school districts to meet the goals of Adequate Yearly Progress, it is no longer enough to limit summer learning loss. Now school leaders find it necessary to use the summer months to increase student achievement and prepare students for rigorous learning in the coming school year. This collaborative, quantitative study is an examination of one district’s attempt to improve summer programming in order to meet the need for increased student achievement. …
