Survival And Harvest Characteristics Of Giant Canada Geese In Eastern South Dakota, 2000–2004, Charles D. Dieter, Jeffrey S. Gleason, Bobby J. Anderson, Spencer Vaa, Paul W. Mammenga

Human–Wildlife Interactions

The population of giant Canada geese (Branta canadensis maxima) in eastern South Dakota has increased substantially since reintroduction efforts began in the 1960s. Breeding population estimates of Canada geese exceeded the population management objective of the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks by the mid-1990s and has continued to increase at an estimated rate of 3 to 5% per year. Goose-related crop damage complaints have also increased. In 1996, a September hunting season (September 1 to 15) was implemented in 10 counties in eastern South Dakota and was expanded in 2000 to include most of eastern South Dakota. …

Against All Probabilities: A Modeling Paradigm For Streaming Applications That Goes Against Common Notions, Rahav Dor Jan 2010

Against All Probabilities: A Modeling Paradigm For Streaming Applications That Goes Against Common Notions, Rahav Dor

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Hardware and software design requires the right portion of skills and mental faculties. The design of a good system is an exercise in rational thinking, engineering, and art. The design process is further complicated when we aspire to build systems that exploit parallelism or are targeted to be deployed on architecturally diverse computing devices, FPGAs or GPUs to name just a few. The need to develop systems that can take advantage of computing devices beyond general purpose CPUs is real. There are several application domains and research efforts that will simply not be able to adequately perform or yield answers …

Articles

Adhesion of a micro-organism to a cell surface is often considered to be the first step in pathogenesis. Inhibiting this process may have therapeutic effects in vivo. This study investigates the inhibitory effects of various bovine whey products on the association of Salm. Typhimurium, E. coli O157:H7 and C. malonaticus (formerly Enterobacter sakazakii) to the human CaCo-2 cell line. Invasion of CaCo-2 cells by Salm. Typhimurium and C. malonaticus was also examined.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging And Surface-Based Analysis Techniques To Quantify Growth Of The Developing Brain, Andrew Knutsen Jan 2010

Magnetic Resonance Imaging And Surface-Based Analysis Techniques To Quantify Growth Of The Developing Brain, Andrew Knutsen

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Human brains, and those of most higher mammals, are gyrencephalic: folded) to accommodate a large cortical surface within the limited volume of the skull. Abnormal folding of the cerebral cortex in humans is associated with a number of neurological dysfunctions and diseases such as schizophrenia and Williams syndrome. To understand the mechanism of gyrification, and to illuminate the underlying causes of abnormal folding, objective, quantitative methods to characterize normal and abnormal development must be developed. The ferret is an excellent model in which to study the development of convolutions in the brain because folding occurs post-natally over a period of …

Piezoelectric Control Of Structures Prone To Instabilities, Sunjung Kim Jan 2010

Piezoelectric Control Of Structures Prone To Instabilities, Sunjung Kim

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Thin-walled structures such as stiffened panels fabricated out of high strength materials are ubiquitous in aerospace structures. These are prone to buckle in a variety of modes with strong possibility of adverse interaction under axial compression and/or bending. Optimally designed stiffened panels, at an appropriate combination of axial compression and suddenly applied lateral pressure undergo large amplitude oscillations and may experience divergence. Under aerodynamic loading, they can experience flutter instability with the amplitudes of oscillations attaining a limit: LCO) or escalating without any limit. Control of structures prone to these forms of instability using piezo-electric actuators is the theme of …

Let The Securities And Exchange Commission Outsource Enforcement By Litigation: A Proposal, Tamar Frankel Jan 2010

Let The Securities And Exchange Commission Outsource Enforcement By Litigation: A Proposal, Tamar Frankel

Faculty Scholarship

The stories of Stanford's suspected Ponzi scheme, and Madoff s proven scheme, as well as the Securities and Exchange Commission's lenient settlements with very large suspected violators, and its focus on the numerous, small accused, have raised questions about the Commission's enforcement resources. This Article suggests that the Commission outsource civil cases against very large defendants when the examination of the defendant finds signs of wrongdoing under the securities acts. The Commission already outsources two types of legal services and the United States government practices extensive outsourcing. This article suggests that with appropriate limitations and controls outsourcing of enforcement litigation …

Nih Guidelines On Human Stem Cell Research In Context: Clarity Or Confusion?, Karen H. Rothenberg, Michael Ulrich

Faculty Scholarship

Restrictions on federal funding for human embryonic stem cell (hESC) research under President Bush stimulated a number of states and the private sector to fund stem cell research, resulting in a patchwork of varying guidelines throughout the country. The National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) guidelines were expected to change all of this. With President Obama following through on his assurance to remove restrictions, stem cell researchers assumed they would find clarity when the new NIH Guidelines on Human Embryonic Stem Cell Research were promulgated to outline an ethical framework to determine which research was eligible for federal funding. As part of …

Towards A Theory Of State Visibility: Race, Poverty, And Equal Protection, Khiara M. Bridges Jan 2010

Towards A Theory Of State Visibility: Race, Poverty, And Equal Protection, Khiara M. Bridges

Faculty Scholarship

In the state of New York, uninsured pregnant women with incomes falling below 200% of the federal poverty line are eligible to enroll in the Prenatal Care Assistance Program (“PCAP”), a Medicaid program that pays the prenatal healthcare expenses of women who meet the program’s qualifications. The aims of PCAP/Medicaid are laudable; it was passed in the late 1980’s with the goal of lowering the state’s high rate of infant mortality as well as the number of infants born with low birth weight. In order to justify the spending of state and federal monies on the program, legislators looked to …

Toward A Single-Consciousness: Challenging "Un-American-Ness" Of People Of Color, Bhawana Kamil Jan 2010

Toward A Single-Consciousness: Challenging "Un-American-Ness" Of People Of Color, Bhawana Kamil

Master's Theses

Race is a major axis of social injustice in America. Social injustice is due to both maldistribution of material resources and opportunities and non-recognition or mis-recognition of people of color. One form of mis-recognition is the accusation that a person of color is not a real American, creating a conflict of identities (i.e., racial and American): a double-consciousness. This accusation has its origins in faulty ideas about race, identity, and race-group membership.

This paper presents a new model of identity that addresses these faulty ideas and provides a conceptual structure within which one can consistently maintain a single-consciousness while maintaining …

Social Support As Moderator Of Job-Specific Or Generic Stressors With Strains, Kaci Deeana Mabe Jan 2010

Social Support As Moderator Of Job-Specific Or Generic Stressors With Strains, Kaci Deeana Mabe

Master's Theses

Two studies examining the relationship between job-specific stressors and strains versus the relationship between generic stressors with strain, as well as the moderating role of social support (from coworkers and administrators), are presented. Eighteen primary school teachers from a private Jewish day school (Study 1) and 242 teachers from an Arizona school district (Study 2) completed self-administered surveys. Results indicated that job-specific (vs. generic) stressors had a stronger positive relationship with strains, but social support was a better moderator for the relationship between generic stressors and strain. As hypothesized, administrator support had a reverse-buffering effect on the stressor-strain relationship in …

If I Could Choose: Internalized Homophobia Of The Queer Cinema Movement, James Joseph Flaherty Jan 2010

If I Could Choose: Internalized Homophobia Of The Queer Cinema Movement, James Joseph Flaherty

Master's Theses

This thesis offers a critical examination of essentialist and constructionist theories of queer identities, with emphasis on portrayals of internalized homophobia in film. The thesis examines three films released at the latter part of the first New Queer Cinema movement (1991 - 2000) - American Beauty (1999), Urbania (2000) and Velvet Goldmine (1998). Using criticisms of Queer as performativity, as theorized by Judith Butler, in addition to the works of Gregory M. Herek, Harry M. Benshoff, Jeffrey Weeks, and other theorists and academics, the thesis analyzes the use of characterization, mise-en-scene, and spatial and temporal relationships in these films as …

This study describes the use of flow cytometry for the enumeration of the toxic marine dinoflagellate Alexandrium catenella in both estuarine samples from Elkhorn Slough, California and from sea water samples from inner Monterey Bay. Samples were subjected to a density-barrier sample enrichment technique employing percoll to separate debris from phytoplankton prior to sample fixation, labeling and analysis. Clarified, enriched preparations of phytoplankton were subjected to whole cell Fluorescent In Situ Hybridization (FISH) using a ribosomal DNA (rDNA) probe specific for the North American ribotype (NA1) of the dinoflagellate genus Alexandrium and analysis by flow cytometry. Flow cytometry was validated …

Predicting Work And Organizational Engagement With Work And Personal Factors, Andrea Kittredge Jan 2010

Predicting Work And Organizational Engagement With Work And Personal Factors, Andrea Kittredge

Master's Theses

The current study examined how psychological hardiness and self efficacy would be related to both work engagement and organizational engagement after controlling for job characteristics, perceived organizational support, and procedural justice as work characteristics. Findings showed that psychological hardiness, specifically commitment, added significant predictive value to both work and organizational engagement after controlling for the work characteristics. However, commitment accounted for more variance in work engagement than variance in organizational engagement. Although it was correlated with overall hardiness, self efficacy was not found to be directly related to either engagement variable, nor did it add predictive value to either of …

Observed Water Vapor Enhancement In Smoke Plumes, Caroline Marie Kiefer Jan 2010

Observed Water Vapor Enhancement In Smoke Plumes, Caroline Marie Kiefer

Master's Theses

Wildland fires cause the loss of life and billions of dollars in property damage every year in the US annually; thus, there is a need to better understand, predict, and manage both wildland and prescribed fires. Moisture released from combustion, in addition to added heat, can enhance buoyancy and convection, influencing fire behavior. Previous studies have shown a wide range of smoke plume moisture enhancement, but much uncertainty still exists in the quantitative values of moisture released during combustion. In this study, three measurement platforms were used to obtain in situ measurements of temperature and relative humidity during various prescribed …

Trophic Interactions Among Chlorostoma Brunnea, Macrocystis Pyrifera, And Fungi, Selena Mcmillan Jan 2010

Trophic Interactions Among Chlorostoma Brunnea, Macrocystis Pyrifera, And Fungi, Selena Mcmillan

Master's Theses

The purpose of this study was to evaluate how one of the most abundant kelp forest herbivores in central California, the trochid snail Chlorostoma brunnea, affects the productivity and survivorship of the giant kelp Macrocystis pyrifera within central California. The effects of this turban snail species were investigated using experimental field manipulations of snail abundance on Macrocystis sporophytes and supplementary laboratory experiments. Experimental field manipulation of C. brunnea densities (0-450 snails per sporophyte) revealed an overcompensation of growth by Macrocystis in response to moderate snail densities. This finding is consistent with a terrestrial growth premise, the Grazing Optimization Hypothesis. …

Amount Of International News By Four World Newspapers: Pre And Post-9/11, Sidney Mitchell Jan 2010

Amount Of International News By Four World Newspapers: Pre And Post-9/11, Sidney Mitchell

Master's Theses

World newspapers, The New York Times, The London Times, The Australian, and The Toronto Star, have the power to enlighten countries and shape public opinion domestically and abroad. However, at times, newspapers tend to be biased and reflect ideologies or values, which tend to be slanted towards home cultures and personal politics. Consequently, the public often suffers because what it learns about the world may be distorted. As a result, newspapers have witnessed a steady decline in readership following the end of the Cold-War and continuing throughout post-9/11. Irrespectively, studies have reported “spikes“ in international news coverage following 9/11 that …

International Law And African Judiciaries: The Example Of South Africa, Erika George Jan 2010

International Law And African Judiciaries: The Example Of South Africa, Erika George

Faculty Scholarship

In recent years, commentators have questioned the extent to which African courts would rely upon foreign law or resort to rules of international law in their domestic decision making. I Comparatively, the African continent offers an interesting and important point of departure for exploring the influence of international law on domestic legal systems. While Africa boasts a number of new constitutional democracies, Africa is also home to a number of countries that remain burdened by colonial legacies and conflict.

It would not be unreasonable to expect international and foreign law to meet with considerable resistance or to be rejected as …

Health Reform: What's Insurance Got To Do With It? Recognizing Health Insurance As A Separate Species Of Insurance, Wendy K. Mariner Jan 2010

Health Reform: What's Insurance Got To Do With It? Recognizing Health Insurance As A Separate Species Of Insurance, Wendy K. Mariner

Faculty Scholarship

Health insurance can be, and to a large extent already is, a separate species of insurance. This article describes the different views of insurance that made health reform contentious. It argues that the goals of health reform are incompatible with conventional views of insurance. Nonetheless, reforming health insurance to achieve those goals does not require as dramatic shift as some might think, because health insurance has already become primarily a means of paying for health care, rather than a simple risk spreading device for specified losses.

Cautions On The Use Of Economics Experiments In Law, Kathryn Zeiler Jan 2010

Cautions On The Use Of Economics Experiments In Law, Kathryn Zeiler

Faculty Scholarship

The recent move to import empirical results into law and policymaking have introduced challenges related to drawing proper inferences from quantitative studies. The purpose of this essay is to elaborate on three specific cautions on the use of economics experiment results. First, critiques of experiment designs based on external and ecological validity are often misplaced. Second, some legal scholars have fallen into the problematic habit of applying results from experiments directly to law and policy rather than applying well-supported theories. Third, the divergent purposes behind economics studies and legal scholarship give rise, in part, to problematic cherry picking of experimental …

Poxvirus Complement Control Proteins Are Expressed On The Cell Surface Through An Intermolecular Disulfide Bridge With The Viral A56 Protein, Brian Dehaven Jan 2010

Poxvirus Complement Control Proteins Are Expressed On The Cell Surface Through An Intermolecular Disulfide Bridge With The Viral A56 Protein, Brian Dehaven

Biology Faculty Scholarship

The vaccinia virus (VACV) complement control protein (VCP) is an immunomodulatory protein that is both secreted from and expressed on the surface of infected cells. Surface expression of VCP occurs though an interaction with the viral transmembrane protein A56 and is dependent on a free N-terminal cysteine of VCP. Although A56 and VCP have been shown to interact in infected cells, the mechanism remains unclear. To investigate if A56 is sufficient for surface expression, we transiently expressed VCP and A56 in eukaryotic cell lines and found that they interact on the cell surface in the absence of other viral proteins. …
