Molecular And Therapeutic Implications Of Notch1 Signaling In Pediatric T-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, Amanda Larson Gedman Jan 2010

Molecular And Therapeutic Implications Of Notch1 Signaling In Pediatric T-Cell Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia, Amanda Larson Gedman

Wayne State University Dissertations

T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL) accounts for 15% of pediatric ALL cases and is associated with early relapse and inferior outcome. The poorer prognosis of T-ALL compared to B-precursor ALL may in part reflect the lack of unique features on which to base therapy. NOTCH1 mutations are of particular interest since these were reported in 37-71% of T-ALLs. The prognostic value of NOTCH1 mutations remains controversial as both favorable and unfavorable associations were reported, whereas in other studies, there were no associations between NOTCH1 mutations and treatment outcome. We explored the impact of mutations in NOTCH1, FBW7 and PTEN on …

Matriptase/Pdgf D/Beta-Pdgfr Signaling Axis In Human Prostate Cancer: The Role Of Pten In The Regulation Of Pdgf D Expression, M. Katie Conley-Lacomb Jan 2010

Matriptase/Pdgf D/Beta-Pdgfr Signaling Axis In Human Prostate Cancer: The Role Of Pten In The Regulation Of Pdgf D Expression, M. Katie Conley-Lacomb

Wayne State University Dissertations

Platelet Derived Growth Factor (PDGF) is a family of mesenchymal growth factors that regulate cell proliferation, migration, and differentiation. Unlike the classic PDGF ligands A and B, which are secreted as active dimers, PDGF D must undergo extracellular proteolytic processing to remove its N-terminal CUB domain from the C-terminal PDGF growth domain before the ligand is able to stimulate its receptor, PDGF receptor beta (?-PDGFR). Importantly, recent clinical studies have shown that ?-PDGFR is upregulated in primary prostate cancer and bone metastases. However, PDGF B, formerly thought to be the sole ligand for ?-PDGFR, is not expressed in clinical prostate …

Work-Family Conflict In Work Groups: Social Information Processing, Support, And Demographic Dissimilarity, Devasheesh P. Bhave, Amit Kramer, Theresa G. Glomb Jan 2010

Work-Family Conflict In Work Groups: Social Information Processing, Support, And Demographic Dissimilarity, Devasheesh P. Bhave, Amit Kramer, Theresa G. Glomb

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We used social information processing theory to examine the effect of work-family conflict (WFC) at the work group level on individuals' experience of WFC. Consistent with hypotheses, results suggest that WFC at the work group level influences individual WFC over and above the shared work environment and job demands. It was also observed that work group support and demographic dissimilarity moderate this relationship. Moderator analyses suggest that work group social support buffers WFC for individuals but is also associated with a stronger effect of work group WFC on individuals' WFC. Moreover, the work group effect on individuals' WFC was shown …

Objective: To investigate whether children born to older mothers have an increased risk of type 1 diabetes by performing a meta-analysis using individual patient data to adjust for recognised confounders.

Research design and methods: Relevant studies published before June 2009 were identified from MEDLINE, Web of Science and EMBASE. Authors of studies were contacted and asked to provide individual patient data or conduct pre-specified analyses. Risk estimates of type 1 diabetes by category of maternal age were calculated for each included study, before and after adjustment for potential confounders. Meta-analysis techniques were used to derive combined odds ratios, and investigate …

State Of The Fisheries And Aquatic Resources Report 2009/10, W.J Fletcher, K. Santoro Jan 2010

State Of The Fisheries And Aquatic Resources Report 2009/10, W.J Fletcher, K. Santoro

Status Reports of the Fisheries and Aquatic Resources

As outlined in the CEO’s overview, this year’s renamed State of the Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Report 2009/10 reflects that the Department of Fisheries has now fully adopted an Ecosystem Based Fisheries Management (EBFM) framework as the basis for management of Western Australia’s aquatic resources (Fletcher, et al., 20101). Consequently, the format for this document has been updated so that it is consistent with this risk-based approach to resource management.

Non-Invasive Brain Stimulation Techniques For Chronic Pain In Adults, Neil E. O'Connell, Benedict M. Wand, Louise Marston, Sally Spencer, Lorraine H. De Souza

Health Sciences Papers and Journal Articles

Description of the condition: Chronic pain is a common problem. When defined as pain of greater than three months duration, prevalence studies indicate that up to half the adult population suffer from chronic pain, and 10 to 20% experience clinically significant chronic pain (Smith 2008). In Europe 19% of adults experience chronic pain of moderate to severe intensity with serious negative implications for their social and working lives and many of these receive inadequate pain management (Breivik 2006). Chronic pain is a heterogenous phenomenon that results from a wide variety of pathologies including chronic tissue injury such as arthritis, peripheral …

Health Sciences Papers and Journal Articles

Objective: This study examined the influence of type and duration of infant feeding on adiposity rebound and the tracking of body mass index (BMI) from birth to 14 years.

Methods: A sample of 1330 individuals over eight follows-ups was drawn from the Western Australian Pregnancy Cohort (Raine) Study. Trajectories of BMI from birth to adolescence using linear mixed model (LMM) analysis investigated the influence of age breastfeeding stopped and age other milk introduced (binomial 4-month cut-point). A sub-sample of LMM predicted BMI was used to determine BMI and age at nadir for early infant feeding groups.

Results: Chi square analysis …

A Cell Autonomous Role For The Notch Ligand Delta-Like 3 In Αβ T- Cell Development, Gerard F. Hoyne, Gavin Chapman, Yovina Sontani, Sharon E. Pursglove, Sally L. Dunwoodie Jan 2010

A Cell Autonomous Role For The Notch Ligand Delta-Like 3 In Αβ T- Cell Development, Gerard F. Hoyne, Gavin Chapman, Yovina Sontani, Sharon E. Pursglove, Sally L. Dunwoodie

Health Sciences Papers and Journal Articles

Notch signalling is critical to help direct T-cell lineage commitment in early T-cell progenitors and in the development of αβ T-cells. Epithelial and stromal cell populations in the thymus express the Notch DSL (Delta, Serrate and Lag2) ligands Delta-like 1 (Dll1), Delta-like 4 (Dll4), Jagged 1 and Jagged 2, and induce Notch signalling in thymocytes that express the Notch receptor. At present there is nothing known about the role of the Delta-like 3 (Dll3) ligand in the immune system. Here we describe a novel cell autonomous role for Dll3 in αβ T-cell development. We show that Dll3 cannot activate Notch …

A Comparison Of Field Measures Of Adiposity Among Australian Adolescents From The Raine Study, Paola Chivers, Helen Parker, Beth P. Hands, Lawrence Beilin, Garth Kendall, Max Bulsara

Health Sciences Papers and Journal Articles

This study examined the possible inter-changeability of common proxy measures of adiposity in adolescent 14 year olds from a large cohort. A sample of 1,607 adolescents (n=825 male and n=782 female) was drawn from the Western Australian Pregnancy Cohort (Raine) Study. Pearson Product Moment Correlation, Bland-Altman method, and Bland regression were used to determine the level of agreement between common proxy adiposity measures. The Bland-Altman and Bland regression results supported the notion that the two indices (Waist-height-Ratio and Body-Mass-Index) are measuring a similar construct (F = .974, p = .324). However 95 percent limits of agreement differed between the methods …

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

The ability of the congeneric braconid parasitoids Cotesia sesamiae (Cameron) and Cotesia flavipes Cameron to discriminate between stemborer larval cues upon contact was studied using their natural hosts, namely the noctuid Busseola fusca (Fuller) and the crambid Chilo partellus (Swinhoe), respectively, and the pyralid non-host Eldana saccharina (Walker). When the natural host larvae were washed in distilled water, parasitoid behavior was similar to that displayed when in contact with E. saccharina, characterized by the absence of ovipositor insertion. When washed host or non-host larvae were bathed with water extracts of their natural host, the parasitoids showed a significant increase in …

Anopheles mosquitoes have been shown to adapt to heavy metals in their natural habitats. In this study we explored the possibility of using Anopheles gambiae sensu stricto as bio-reporters for environmental heavy metal pollution through expressions of their metal-responsive metallothionein and α-tubulin genes. The study was undertaken with third instar larvae after selection by cadmium, copper, or lead at LC30 through five successive generations. Expression levels were determined in the 5th generation by semi-quantitative RT-PCR on the experimental and control populations. The data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA. The highest metallothionein (F3, 11=4.574, P=0.038) and α-tubulin (F3, 11=12.961, P=0.002) responses …

Under the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) countries have sovereign rights over their genetic resources. Agreements governing the access to these resources and the sharing of the benefits arising from their use need to be established between involved parties [i. e. Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS)]. This also applies to species collected for potential use in biological control. Recent applications of CBD principles have already made it difficult or impossible to collect and export natural enemies for biological control research in several countries. If such an approach is widely applied it would impede this very successful and environmentally safe pest …

Economic Threshold For The Management Of Plutella Xylostella With Granulovirus In Cauliflower Ecosystem, S. Subramanian, R. J. Rabindra, N. Sathiah Jan 2010

Economic Threshold For The Management Of Plutella Xylostella With Granulovirus In Cauliflower Ecosystem, S. Subramanian, R. J. Rabindra, N. Sathiah

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Resistance to chemicals and some biological control agents by Plutella xylostella has resulted in the search for alternatives, such as P. xylostella granulovirus (PlxyGV), for the management of P. xylostella. However, use of PlxyGV would be economical only if it is applied at the right crop stage and at economic threshold levels. Hence, we evaluated the field level economic threshold for application of PlxyGV at the reproductive phase of cauliflower taking into consideration both the economic threshold model and the economic optimization model. PlxyGV was found to be very effective in management of the pest and was comparable to weekly …

Can Markets Save Lives? An Experimental Investigation Of A Market For Organ Donations, Cary Deck, Erik O. Kimbrough Jan 2010

Can Markets Save Lives? An Experimental Investigation Of A Market For Organ Donations, Cary Deck, Erik O. Kimbrough

ESI Working Papers

Many people die while waiting for organ transplants even though the number of usable organs is far larger than the number needed for transplant. Governments have devised many policies aimed at increasing available transplant organs with variable success. However, with few exceptions, policy makers are reluctant to establish markets for organs despite the potential for mutually beneficial exchanges. We ask whether organ markets could save lives. Controlled laboratory methods are ideal for this inquiry because human lives would be involved when implementing field trials. Our results suggest that markets can increase the supply of organs available for transplant, but that …

“Dangerous Thoughts”? Margaret Sanger’S World Trip Journal, Japan, 1922, Peter C. Engelman

Documentary Editing: Journal of the Association for Documentary Editing (1979–2011)

Sanger’s longest and, I would argue, most significant piece of travel writing was her 1922 World Trip Journal, which chronicles her six-month tour to discuss birth control in Japan, Korea, China, Hong Kong and Ceylon, with stops in Yemen and Egypt, vacation time on the European continent, and a major conference in London. Coming just a few months after she formed the American Birth Control League in New York, the world tour raised Sanger’s international profile and gave her increased prominence at home, solidifying her leadership of the American movement. My focus in what follows is on the first leg …

Engineered Nanoparticles: Current Knowledge About Ohs Risks And Prevention Measures, Claude Ostiguy, Brigitte Roberge, Catherine Woods, Brigitte Soucy

Abstract

An initial review of the literature on nanoparticles prompted the IRSST to publish two reports on this subject early in 2006, namely on the health risks of nanotechnologies and on various aspects of industrial hygiene that involve them. Considering the rapid evolution in scientific knowledge, an …

The Impact Of A Coordinated Care Program On Uninsured, Chronically Ill Patients, Jennifer Neimeyer Jan 2010

The Impact Of A Coordinated Care Program On Uninsured, Chronically Ill Patients, Jennifer Neimeyer

Theses and Dissertations

This study explored how being enrolled in a program that both coordinates patient care and provides a medical home changes health care utilization for uninsured patients, more specifically those persons with chronic conditions, through the use of the Chronic Care Model and Andersen and Aday’s Behavioral Model for Access to Health Care. Uninsured patients typically seek out care in a fragmented manner, which may lead to ineffective and inefficient care, especially for conditions that may require ongoing treatment and monitoring such as chronic conditions. The methodology used to examine the relationship between the interaction of enrollment and chronic condition status …

The Impact Of Medicaid Disproportionate Share Hospital Payment On The Provision Of Hospital Uncompensated Care And Quality Of Care, Hui-Min Hsieh

Theses and Dissertations

Medicaid Disproportionate Share Hospital (DSH) payment is one of the major funds supporting health care providers as they treat low-income patients. However, Medicaid DSH payments have been targeted for major budget cuts in many health policy reforms. This study examines the association between the changes in Medicaid DSH payments resulting from the BBA policy changes and hospital outcomes, in terms of hospital provision of uncompensated care and quality of care. Economic theory of non-profit hospital behavior is used as a conceptual framework, and longitudinal data for California short-term, non-federal general acute care hospitals for 1996-2003 are examined. California was especially …

The Role Of The Methyl Dna Binding Domain Protein 2 (Mbd2) In Breast Cancer, Omar Mian Jan 2010

The Role Of The Methyl Dna Binding Domain Protein 2 (Mbd2) In Breast Cancer, Omar Mian

Theses and Dissertations

Methyl-CpG Binding Proteins (MCBPs) are thought to function as the interpreters of epigenetic information encoded in cytosine methylation. Their ability to translate DNA methylation into local transcriptional repression has sparked interest in the role of Methyl-Binding Domain Proteins (MBDs) in cancer, where repatterning of CpG methylation is common. In this dissertation I summarize and discuss observations made in the Ginder Lab linking MCBPs to the progression of neoplastic disease. It is clear from our work that the Methyl Binding Domain Protein 2 (MBD2) is necessary for the persistent repression of critical tumor suppressor genes in breast cancer. We show that …

Dendritic Spine Density Varies Between Unisensory And Multisensory Cortical Regions, Moazzum Bajwa Jan 2010

Dendritic Spine Density Varies Between Unisensory And Multisensory Cortical Regions, Moazzum Bajwa

Theses and Dissertations

In the brain, the dendritic spine is a point of information exchange that extends the neuronal surface on which synapses occur, as well as facilitates and stabilizes those contacts. Furthermore, dendritic spines dynamically change in shape and number in response to a variety of factors. Dendritic spine numbers are reduced in mental retardation, enhanced during development, sensory enrichment or physical exercise, or fluctuate during the reproductive cycle. Thus, for a given neuron type, it might be expected that dendritic spine number might achieve a dynamic optimum. Indeed, many studies of spine density of pyramidal neurons in sensory cortex indicate that …

Periodontal Bacterial-Dna Initiated Immuno-Inflammatory Responses In Human Osteoblastic Cells, Chebel Najib Bou Jan 2010

Periodontal Bacterial-Dna Initiated Immuno-Inflammatory Responses In Human Osteoblastic Cells, Chebel Najib Bou

Theses and Dissertations

Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease initiated by gram negative anaerobic bacteria. These bacteria possess pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) that interact with various receptors including Toll like receptors (TLRs). Bacterial DNA (bDNA) is one of the PAMPs mainly recognized by TLR9. Interaction of bDNA and its receptors leads to activation of inflammatory signaling pathways potentially resulting in periodontal bone destruction. The aim of this study was to determine the production of IL- 6 and IL-8 in response to periodontal bDNA from human osteoblastic cells (MG-63). MG- 63 cells were stimulated in duplicate for 20 hours with 100ng/μl of bDNA from …
