The Relationship Between Young Women's Self-Perceived Body-Esteems And Calculated Body Compositions, Alyssa Kay Ashmore Jan 2010

The Relationship Between Young Women's Self-Perceived Body-Esteems And Calculated Body Compositions, Alyssa Kay Ashmore

Honors Theses

Beginning at an early age, girls realize self-conscious feelings after being confronted with the issue of accepting their changing bodies (Halpem, Udry, Campbell & Suchindran, 1999). In the university setting, young women’s self-perceptions of body- esteem are sensitive to outside influences and peers (Heinberg & Thompson, 1992; Giles, Helme & Krcmar, 2007, Shomaker & Furman, 2007). This study observes the relationship between calculated body compositions and self-perceived body-esteems among female students at the University of Mississippi. Eighty-five female students between the ages of 18 and 23 volunteered to participate in the study. A questionnaire assessed body-esteem levels of the participants …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Increasing amounts of clinical research data are collected by manual data entry into electronic source systems and directly from research subjects. For this manual entered source data, common methods of data cleaning such as post-entry identification and resolution of discrepancies and double data entry are not feasible. However data accuracy rates achieved without these mechanisms may be higher than desired for a particular research use. We evaluated a heuristic usability method for utility as a tool to independently and prospectively identify data collection form questions associated with data errors. The method evaluated had a promising sensitivity of 64% and a …

Denominational Support For Clergy Mental Health, Bobby L. Trihub, Mark R. Mcminn, William C. Buhrow, Thomas F. Johnson

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

To date, minimal research has addressed the actual services provided to maintain the mental health of leadership in the church. Three major Protestant denominations were consulted within this study, including a total of 434 pastors across the United States. Among these three denominations, a range of services are now being offered to support clergy, with services such as time off, prayer support groups, and clergy retreats among the most valued, adequately provided, and utilized. Still, clergy do not see the provision of services as fully adequate, and report a number of obstacles to utilizing services. Generally, the most highly rated …

Fas Behavioral Survey Of Traits: Screening For Effects Of Prenatal Exposure To Alcohol, Glena Andrews, C. Joe Robins

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

The FAS BeST was developed by parents and educators of children with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome rating behaviors characteristic of FASD including; easily influenced by others, difficulty learning from experience, appearing and declaring innocence even when confronted with evidence to the contrary, and experiencing difficulties in other domains. The FAS BeST differentiates between children with PEA, dysgenesis of the corpus callosum (DCC), and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD; Porter & Andrews, 2004). The sample included 294 participants. Using the cutoff score suggested by Porter and Andrews (2004) the accuracy rates were 78% for FAS/E, 100% for controls, 85% for DCC, and …

The Efficacy Of A Brief Behavioral Health Intervention For Managing High Utilization Of Ed Services By Chronic Pain Patients, Jonathan Woodhouse, Mary K. Peterson, Clark D. Campbell, Kathleen Gathercoal Jan 2010

The Efficacy Of A Brief Behavioral Health Intervention For Managing High Utilization Of Ed Services By Chronic Pain Patients, Jonathan Woodhouse, Mary K. Peterson, Clark D. Campbell, Kathleen Gathercoal

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

Patients with chronic pain continue to seek medical care from emergency departments nationwide despite the fact that an emergency department is a less-than-optimal environment for meeting their specific and specialized needs. As the scientific community has gained a more sophisticated understanding of the mechanisms that contribute to the development and maintenance of chronic pain, the central role of psychological factors have emerged. Therefore, an ED-based, behavioral health intervention for chronic pain patients is needed to better serve this population and to help hospitals provide cost effective treatment at the appropriate level of care.

Psychologists’ Attitudes And Ethical Concerns Regarding The Use Of Social Networking Web Sites, Laura Taylor, Mark R. Mcminn, Rodger K. Bufford, Kelly B.T. Chang

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

Most psychologists seek to control self-disclosures they make to patients, but the Internet’s rapid development and widespread use over the past decade have introduced new problems for psychologists trying to avoid inappropriate disclosures. A total of 695 psychology graduate students and psychologists were surveyed about their current use of social networking Web sites (SNWs), opinions regarding regulation of online activities by the American Psychological Association (APA), and interactions in clinical work as a result of online activities. Established psychologists seldom use SNWs and may lack the experience to provide relevant supervisory guidance. No consensus about the need for APA guidelines …

Toward Building Resilience As The Best Path To Prevention, Duane Mcbride, Gary Hopkins, Peter Landless, Jeffrey Spady Jan 2010

Toward Building Resilience As The Best Path To Prevention, Duane Mcbride, Gary Hopkins, Peter Landless, Jeffrey Spady

180 Symposium Publications

Substance abuse in the form of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs wreaks havoc in the lives of young and old. The party scene seems to be a given on college campuses. Seventh-day Adventist schools are not immune to these cultural influences. The best method of prevention is resilience. The components that contribute to resilience include a positively involved family, good self esteem, adult supervised after school activities for young people, a sense of community at school, service activities, and faith. By fostering these elements, we can be intentional about making our campuses exception in all areas.

The Local Church And Public Education: Student Spiritual Care Pre- And Post-Graduation, Ronald H. Whitehead

180 Symposium Publications

Families continue to provide the foundation for the spiritual development of young people. Today adult Adventists in North America are part of the church primarily because of their Adventist roots and relationships. About half grew up as Adventists, and almost an additional third joined because of personal relationships. Both of these often get cast aside when young adults move away to college or graduate school. It’s time to be proactive to identify local churches can will provide a welcoming home atmosphere for young adults in transition. A new system called “Churches of Refuge” (COR) identifies such churches and provides certification, …

Air Pollutant Emissions From The Burning Of Incense, Mosquito Coils, And Candles In A Small Experimental Chamber, Maneerat Ongwandee, Wilas Pipithakul

Applied Environmental Research

Combustion of incense, candles, and mosquito coils produces a variety of air pollutants, which may cause adverse health effects. This study was to characterize emissions of particulate matter (PM2.5) and carbon monoxide (CO) from the burning process of three selected types of emitters: incense, candles, and mosquito coils. The experiments were conducted in an aluminum foil-lined wall chamber with a dimension of 1x1x1 m3. Emission rates and emission factors of the test emitters were obtained from fitting time-dependent concentrations of the measured pollutants to a single-compartment mass balance model. The emission rates and emission factors of incense combustion were: PM2.5 …
