Act 3: A Feel For Society (1949-1984), James Smith Allen Nov 2010

Act 3: A Feel For Society (1949-1984), James Smith Allen

A Privileged Past

In Act 3, the personal story of the author is developed from birth to marriage (1949-1984), with particular attention to the historical role of cultural capital as defined by sociologist Pierre Bourdieu. "A Privileged Past" considers Bourdieu’s key components of this concept in the author’s education, travel, professional training, and social networks. The central literary figure in this chapter is the sense of touch, suggesting metaphorically the critical support provided by family members, close friends, and good colleagues. It ends with the warm press of hands and lips during the author’s wedding.

Markov Chain Analysis And Student Academic Progress: An Empirical Comparative Study, Shafiqah Alawadhi, Mokhtar Konsowa

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

An application of Markov Chain Analysis of student flow at Kuwait University is presented based on a random sample of 1,100 students from the academic years 1996-1997 to 2004-2005. Results were obtained for each college and in total which allows for a comparative study. The students’ mean lifetimes in different levels of study in the colleges as well as the percentage of dropping out of the system are estimated.

Reducing Selection Bias In Analyzing Longitudinal Health Data With High Mortality Rates, Xian Liu, Charles C. Engel, Han Kang, Kristie L. Gore

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Two longitudinal regression models, one parametric and one nonparametric, are developed to reduce selection bias when analyzing longitudinal health data with high mortality rates. The parametric mixed model is a two-step linear regression approach, whereas the nonparametric mixed-effects regression model uses a retransformation method to handle random errors across time.

Some Facts And Figures From The Civil Justice System And The Public, Mary Stratton, James Cresswell, Scot Sehested Nov 2010

Some Facts And Figures From The Civil Justice System And The Public, Mary Stratton, James Cresswell, Scot Sehested

Canadian Forum on Civil Justice

The Civil Justice System and the Public (CJSP) was a collaborative research program founded on the belief that a lack of effective communication, both within the system and between the system and the public, is a significant barrier interfering with access to justice. The research involved both the public and the justice community in identifying changes in communication practice that will improve the system. The project goal was to make specific and clear recommendations for effective change that will ultimately improve access to the civil justice system by increasing the ability of the system to hear, involve, and respond to …

Collaborative Researchers Or Cold Warriors? The Origins, Activities, And Legacy Of The Smithsonian’S Institute Of Social Anthropology, A. Peter Castro

Journal of International and Global Studies

International research collaboration is increasingly popular, providing many scholarly and practical benefits. These collaborative endeavors also encounter obstacles and costs, including ones involving issues of power and professional ethics. My study seeks to widen our understanding of international collaborative social science research by examining the complex origins, diverse activities, and clouded legacy of the Smithsonian Institution’s Institute of Social Anthropology (ISA). The ISA was an innovative collaborative teaching and research program founded by Julian Steward during World War II to meet many goals, including increasing social science capacity in Latin America, expanding knowledge about contemporary cultural change, strengthening area expertise …

An In Vitro Model For Pelger-Huët Anomaly, Ada L. Olins, Aurélie Ernst, Monika Zwerger, Harald Hermann, Donald E. Olins

Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

The principal human blood granulocyte (neutrophil) possesses a lobulated and deformable nucleus, important to facilitate rapid egress from blood vessels as these cells migrate to sites of bacterial or fungal infection. This unusual nuclear shape is a product of elevated levels of an integral membrane protein of the nuclear envelope lamin B receptor (LBR) and of decreased amounts of lamin A/C. In humans, a genetic deficiency of LBR produces Pelger-Huët anomaly, resulting in blood neutrophils that exhibit hypolobulated nuclei with redistributed heterochromatin. Structural changes in nuclear architecture occur during granulopoiesis within bone marrow. The exact mechanisms of this nuclear shape …

Food Assistance Programs And Mississippi Farmers Markets, Emily Broad, Elizabeth Bailey, Myra Blake, Lee Brand Nov 2010

Food Assistance Programs And Mississippi Farmers Markets, Emily Broad, Elizabeth Bailey, Myra Blake, Lee Brand

Delta Directions: Publications

At a time when money is tight everywhere, things are particularly tough in Mississippi. The budget problems and high rates of unemployment that challenge other states are compounded in Mississippi by alarmingly high rates of obesity. One of the main causes of this dangerous health issue is that Mississippi’s poorest people have very little access to fresh fruits, vegetables, and other local farm products, despite recent growth in farmers markets across the state. Without access to healthy foods, this vulnerable population is left with unhealthy food alternatives that contribute to unhealthy weight gain. Barriers at the local, state and national …

Family Affairs Newsletter 2010-11-01, Zack Paakkonen

Family Affairs newsletter (2004-2016)

FAMILY AFFAIRS was a free, twice-a-month, social activities newsletter for the GLBTQI (gay/lesbian/bisexual/trans/queer/intersex) community, sent out around the 1st and 15th of each month. It covered the State of Maine only. The list was begun and maintained for many years by Jean Vermette in Bangor, and later operated by Zack Paakkonen of Portland. Over the years it evolved from a social activities newsletter into a business directory, classified ad service, and community bulletin board.

Phase Iii, Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Evaluation Of Pregabalin For Alleviating Hot Flashes, N07c1, Charles L. Loprinzi, Rui Qin, Ernie P. Baclueva, Donald J. Jurgens

Articles

PURPOSE:

Hot flashes are a common problem for which effective and safe treatments are needed. The current trial was conducted on the basis of preliminary promising data that pregabalin decreased hot flashes.

PATIENTS AND METHODS:

A double-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized trial design was used to compare pregabalin at target doses of 75 mg twice daily and 150 mg twice daily with a placebo. Hot flash frequencies and scores (frequency times mean severity) were recorded daily during a baseline week and for six treatment weeks. The primary end point for this study was the change-from-baseline hot flash score during treatment week 6 …

Japan’S Ticad: Alternative Global Framework For Africa’S Development?, Bertha Z. Osei-Hwedie, Kwaku Osei-Hwedie

Zambia Social Science Journal

Since 1993, Japan has sought to aid Africa’s development through the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD). TICAD is a multilateral, donor-recipient framework within which Japan interacts with Africa on a range of development issues. It represents the Post Washington Consensus approach as an alternative donor strategy and development model, with the hope of replicating the East Asian development miracle in Africa. TICAD makes Japan an important source of development assistance to Africa and for facilitation of South-South cooperation. This article discusses TICAD’s principles, objectives and programmes. It focuses on TICAD’s achievements in terms of its impact on African …
