Kinesiology and Public Health
Physical activity is an important contributor to regulation of energy balance and body composition. In this article, we separate the impact of exercise from the confounding influence of energy imbalance and highlight sex differences in hormonal and appetite responses to physical activity. The evolving story may influence our thinking regarding the use of physical activity to manage body composition.

What Type Of Weight Loss Program Do Postpartum Women Want? Treatment Preferences Of Postpartum Women In Two Community Settings, Suzanne Phelan, Katelyn Smith, John-Mark Steele, Dawn Wilt, Sally Ames, Linda Mcclure
Kinesiology and Public Health
Approximately 25% of women experience major weight gain after pregnancy, retaining more than 4.5 kg. Preliminary efforts to promote postpartum weight loss have encountered some success, but little is known about the types of programs of greatest interest to postpartum women. The purpose of this study was to better understand the weight control needs and preferences of postpartum women in the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Nutrition program (N = 100) and an Adult Education Parenting (AEP) program (N = 75). A self-report questionnaire was used to collect participants’ demographic and weight history information as well as participants’ degree of …

E.J. Gallo Winery Spirit-Makers Facility, Aaron Pickar
Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering
With growing demand for E.J. Gallo spirit brands, the cramped and cluttered facility allocated to the spirit-makers does not provide an adequate work environment to design and test new hard alcohols. E.J. Gallo Winery wants to relocate the spirit-makers to a new facility located near the brandy production floor for under 200,000 dollars. In order to do this, a revised systematic approach to facility design is used.
In this process, the departments are first defined, then the relationships between these departments and the space requirements are documented. Once these planning steps are complete, alternative layouts are constructed and analyzed until …

Library Scholarship
Information privacy is an important consideration when transitioning university collections from paper to electronic access. Yet the protection of -- and limits to -- student privacy regulations have rarely been addressed in the literature for online electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs). The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and its relevance to student work should be a consideration when widely distributing scholarship like e-portfolios, ETDs, and senior capstone projects. In this article, we share several campus approaches to FERPA and electronic student work.

Job Satisfaction Of Naia Head Coaches At Small Faith-Based Colleges: The Teacher-Coach Model, Craig L. Stiemsma
Faculty Work Comprehensive List
The head coaches at smaller colleges usually have other job responsibilities that include teaching, along with the responsibilities of coaching, recruiting, scheduling, and other coaching-related jobs. There is often a dual role involved for these coaches who try to juggle two different jobs that sometimes require different skill sets and involve different responsibilities that may lead to role conflict. The primary purpose of this study was to determine the level of job satisfaction of coaches in the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC). This study also sought to determine if there were differences in coaches' levels of job satisfaction based on …

Issues Of Race In The Age Of Obama, Lawrence Joseph
Journal of Civil Rights and Economic Development
(Excerpt)
The August 16, 2009 New York Times Book Review includes an essay, Race and Diversity in the Age of Obama, by Orlando Patterson. The essay is the third in a series of essays in the Book Review "exploring dominant themes and currents of thought in particular areas of American life." Patterson's essay maps out the ethno-racial issues that exist (or one might say persist) in the United States, now that Barack Obama, an African American, is president. A professor of sociology at Harvard, his perspective is primarily socioeconomic and cultural. My essay will use Patterson's essay as a guide …

The Relationship Between Stress, Work Hours And Depressive Symptoms Among Migrant Factory Workers In China, Anthony Ping-Kam So
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This study sought to identify the relationship between work hours, stress, and depressive symptoms among migrant factory workers in China (N = 911). Using correlational analyses, the researcher arrived at results that indicated there was a weak but significant positive correlation between working hours and stress levels; a significant moderate relationship between working hours and depression levels, and a significant association between stress levels and depressive symptoms among migrant factory workers in China. Additionally, multiple regression analysis found a significant correlation between depressive symptoms and dorm-living (environmental factor) in the participants. Data indicated social support and gender difference were found …

Essays On The Efficiency Of Non-Genetically Modified (Non-Gm) And Conventional Soybean Features Markets, Kentaka Aruga
Open Access Dissertations
This dissertation explores issues related to efficiency, how efficiently markets transmit information, of non-genetically modified (GM) soybean and conventional soybean futures markets at the Tokyo Grain Exchange (TGE).
The first manuscript examines how efficiently non-GM and conventional soybean futures markets react to an announcement to change the contract unit, suppliers, and expiration date on the conventional soybean contract. Box and Tiao's intervention analysis is used for this purpose. The result reveals that the price premium for non-GM soybeans (the price difference between the two soybean contracts) and the volumes of non-GM soybeans increase after the announcement and this effect remained …
Carrying Capacity Of Bivalve Aquaculture, Carrie Jean Byron
Carrying Capacity Of Bivalve Aquaculture, Carrie Jean Byron
Open Access Dissertations
A framework was developed for determining carrying capacity through mass-balance ecosystem modeling and stakeholder involvement that can be used to guide management of bivalve aquaculture. A collaborative working group was formed where stakeholders worked closely with scientists to calculate carrying capacity which was then used to inform a long-term aquaculture plan for Narragansett Bay and Rhode Island's coastal lagoons where aquaculture has doubled in six years and user conflicts are high. Stakeholders informed the modeling process at four critical steps: conceptualization of models, evaluation of data sources for parameterization, mass-balancing of the model, and calculation of carrying capacity. Cultured oysters, …
Public Consensus As Constitutional Authority, Richard A. Primus
Public Consensus As Constitutional Authority, Richard A. Primus
Articles
Barry Friedman's new book The Will of the People attempts to dissolve constitutional law's countermajoritariand ifficulty by showing that, in practice,t he Supreme Court does only what the public will tolerate. His account succeeds if "the countermajoritarian difficulty" refers to the threat that courts will run the country in ways that contravene majority preference, but not if the "the countermajoritarian difficulty" refers to the need to explain the legitimate sources of judicial authority in cases where decisions do contravene majority preference. Friedman's book does not pursue the second possibility, and may suggest that doing so is unimportant, in part because …

Discrimination against women seeking or serving in leadership positions in sport is worthy of analysis, not only for the sake of individual women who desire to self-actualize as a head coach or athletic administrator, but because the unique role of sport in society gives underrepresentation of women in leadership positions additional significance. Due to its high visibility and widespread appeal—its veritable iconic status—sport is a salient site of cultural production. That is, sport operates on a symbolic level, reflecting and transmitting shared cultural values. Among these values, sport helps define the attributes associated with leadership, and thus, derivatively, power. By …

The Magic Of Money And Banking, Eric J. Gouvin
The Magic Of Money And Banking, Eric J. Gouvin
Faculty Scholarship
This chapter analyzes the banking system in the wizarding world of Harry Potter and compares it to the salient features of the banking system in the Muggle world. The chapter begins with a brief history of money. Although the economies in both the wizarding world and the Muggle world use money, there are striking differences between those worlds on this point. We can only speculate on why these differences exist, but it appears that the wizard concept of money stopped evolving in the Middle Ages, when bankers were really just trusted keepers of valuables. The chapter concludes that although Muggle …
